The LHCb VELO Upgrade Module Construction

The LHCb detector has undergone a major upgrade for LHC Run 3. This Upgrade I detector facilitates operation at higher luminosity and utilises full-detector information at the LHC collision rate, critically including the use of vertex information. A new vertex locator system, the VELO Upgrade, has been constructed. The core element of the new VELO are the double-sided pixelated hybrid silicon detector modules which operate in vacuum close to the LHC beam in a high radiation environment. The construction and quality assurance tests of these modules are described in this paper. The modules incorporate 200 \mum thick, n-on-p silicon sensors bump-bonded to 130 \nm technology ASICs. These are attached with high precision to a silicon microchannel substrate that uses evaporative CO$_2$ cooling. The ASICs are controlled and read out with flexible printed circuits that are glued to the substrate and wire-bonded to the chips. The mechanical support of the module is given by a carbon fibre plate, two carbon fibre rods and an aluminium plate. The sensor attachment was achieved with an average precision of 21 $\mathrm{μm}$, more than 99.5\% of all pixels are fully functional, and a thermal figure of merit of 3 \mathrm{Kcm^{2}W^{-1}}$ was achieved. The production of the modules was successfully completed in 2021, with the final assembly and installation completed in time for data taking in 2022.

The Upgrade I of LHCb VELO -- towards an intelligent monitoring platform

The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) detector is designed to detect decays of b- and c- hadrons for the study of CP violation and rare decays. At the end of the LHC Run 2, many of the LHCb measurements remained statistically dominated. In order to increase the trigger yield for purely hadronic channels, the hardware trigger will be removed, and the detector will be read out at 40 MHz. This, in combination with the five-fold increase in luminosity, requires radical changes to LHCb's electronics, and, in some cases, the replacement of entire sub-detectors with state-of-the-art detector technologies. The Vertex Locator (VELO) surrounding the interaction region is used to reconstruct the collision points (primary vertices) and decay vertices of long-lived particles (secondary vertices). The upgraded VELO will be composed of 52 modules placed along the beam axis divided into two retractable halves. The modules will each be equipped with 4 silicon hybrid pixel tiles, each read out by 3 VeloPix ASICs. The total output data rate anticipated for the whole detector will be around 1.6 Tbit/s. The highest occupancy ASICs will have pixel hit rates of approximately 900 Mhit/s, with the corresponding output data rate of 15 Gbit/s. The LHCb upgrade detector will be the first detector to read out at the full LHC rate of 40 MHz. The VELO upgrade will utilize the latest detector technologies to read out at this rate while maintaining the required radiation-hard profile and minimizing the detector material.

Timing performance of the LHCb VELO Timepix3 Telescope

We performed a detailed study of the timing performance of the LHCb VELO Timepix3 Telescope with a 180 GeV/c mixed hadron beam at the CERN SPS. A twofold method was developed to improve the resolution of single-plane time measurements, resulting in a more precise overall track time measurement. The first step uses spatial information of reconstructed tracks in combination with the measured signal charge in the sensor to correct for a mixture of different effects: variations in charge carrier drift time; variations in signal induction, which are the result of a non-uniform weighting field in the pixels; and lastly, timewalk in the analog front-end. The second step corrects for systematic timing offsets in Timepix3 that vary from -2 ns to 2 ns. By applying this method, we improved the track time resolution from 438$\,\pm\,$16 ps to 276$\,\pm\,$4 ps.

Measurement of psi(2S) meson production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of psi(2S) mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The psi(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels psi(2S) -> mu+ mu- and psi(2S) -> J/psi pi+ pi-, with the J/psi meson decaying into two muons. Results are presented both for promptly produced psi(2S) mesons and for those originating from b-hadron decays. In the kinematic range pT(psi(2S)) <= 16 GeV/c and 2 < y(psi(2S)) <= 4.5 we measure 1.44 +- 0.01 +- 0.12+0.2-0.4 mub for prompt psi(2S) production and 0.25 +- 0.01 +- 0.02 mub for psi(2S) from b-hadron decays, where the last uncertainty on the prompt cross-section is due to the unknown psi(2S) polarization. Recent QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with our measurements. Combining the present result with the LHCb J/psi measurements we determine the inclusive branching fraction B(b -> psi(2S) X) = (2.73 +- 0.06 +- 0.16 +- 0.24) x 10^(-3), where the last uncertainty is due to the B(b -> J/psi X), B(J/psi -> mu+ mu-) and B(psi(2S) -> e+ e-) branching fraction uncertainties. All above results are corrected by an erratum included as an appendix.

The HEV Ventilator

HEV is a low-cost, versatile, high-quality ventilator, which has been designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ventilator is intended to be used both in and out of hospital intensive care units, and for both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. The hardware can be complemented with an external turbine for use in regions where compressed air supplies are not reliably available. The standard modes provided include PC-A/C(Pressure Assist Control),PC-A/C-PRVC(Pressure Regulated Volume Control), PC-PSV (Pressure Support Ventilation) and CPAP (Continuous Positive airway pressure). HEV is designed to support remote training and post market surveillance via a web interface and data logging to complement the standard touch screen operation, making it suitable for a wide range of geographical deployment. The HEV design places emphasis on the quality of the pressure curves and the reactivity of the trigger, delivering a global performance which will be applicable to ventilator needs beyond theCOVID-19 pandemic. This article describes the conceptual design and presents the prototype units together with their performance evaluation.

The HEV Ventilator Proposal

We propose the design of a ventilator which can be easily manufactured and integrated into the hospital environment to support COVID-19 patients. The unit is designed to support standard ventilator modes of operation, most importantly PRVC (Pressure Regulated Volume Control) and SIMV-PC (Synchronised Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation) modes. The unit is not yet an approved medical device and is in the concept and prototyping stage. It is presented here to invite fast feedback for development and deployment in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dalitz plot analysis of the $D^+\to K^-K^+K^+$ decay

The resonant structure of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+ \to K^-K^+K^+$ is studied for the first time. The measurement is based on a sample of pp-collision data, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb$^-1$. The amplitude analysis of this decay is performed with the isobar model and a phenomenological model based on an effective chiral Lagrangian. In both models the S-wave component in the $K^-K^+$ system is dominant, with a small contribution of the $ϕ(1020)$ meson and a negligible contribution from tensor resonances. The $K^-K^+$ scattering amplitudes for the considered combinations of spin (0,1) and isospin (0,1) of the two-body system are obtained from the Dalitz plot fit with the phenomenological decay amplitude.

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $Λ^0_b\!\toψ(2S) Λ$ and $Λ^0_b\!\to J/ψΛ$

Using $pp$ collisions corresponding to 3$\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8$\,\text{TeV}$, the ratio of branching fractions \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(Λ^0_b\!\toψ(2S) Λ)/\mathcal{B}(Λ^0_b\!\to J/ψΛ)= 0.513 \pm 0.023\, (\text{stat}) \pm 0.016 \, (\text{syst}) \pm 0.011\, (\mathcal{B}) \end{align*} is determined. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the external branching fractions used.

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of $Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow Λμ^+μ^-$ decays

The differential branching fraction of the rare decay $Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow Λμ^+μ^-$ is measured as a function of $q^{2}$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0 \mbox{ fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. Evidence of signal is observed in the $q^2$ region below the square of the $J/ψ$ mass. Integrating over $15 < q^{2} < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4$ the branching fraction is measured as $d\mathcal{B}(Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow Λμ^+μ^-)/dq^2 = (1.18 ^{+ 0.09} _{-0.08} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-7} ( \mbox{GeV}^{2}/c^{4})^{-1}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode, $Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow J/ψΛ$, respectively. In the $q^2$ intervals where the signal is observed, angular distributions are studied and the forward-backward asymmetries in the dimuon ($A^{l}_{\rm FB}$) and hadron ($A^{h}_{\rm FB}$) systems are measured for the first time. In the range $15 < q^2 < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4$ they are found to be $A^{l}_{\rm FB} = -0.05 \pm 0.09 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}$ and $A^{h}_{\rm FB} = -0.29 \pm 0.07 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}$.

Search for a dimuon resonance in the $Υ$ mass region

A search is performed for a spin-0 boson, $ϕ$, produced in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, using prompt $ϕ\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$ decays and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. No evidence is found for a signal in the mass range from 5.5 to 15 GeV. Upper limits are placed on the product of the production cross-section and the branching fraction into the dimuon final state. The limits are comparable to the best existing over most of the mass region considered and are the first to be set near the $Υ$ resonances.

Measurement of forward top pair production in the dilepton channel in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Forward top quark pair production is studied in $pp$ collisions in the $μeb$ final state using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.93 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The cross-section is measured in a fiducial region where both leptons have a transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV and a pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5. The quadrature sum of the azimuthal separation and the difference in pseudorapidities, denoted $ΔR$, between the two leptons must be larger than 0.1. The $b$-jet axis is required to be separated from both leptons by a $ΔR$ of 0.5, and to have a transverse momentum in excess of 20 GeV and a pseudorapidity between 2.2 and 4.2. The cross-section is measured to be $$σ_{t\bar{t}}= 126\pm19\,(\mathrm{stat})\pm16\,(\mathrm{syst})\pm5\,(\mathrm{lumi})\,\,\mathrm{ fb}$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measurement is compatible with the Standard Model prediction.

Measurement of the relative rate of prompt $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production at $\sqrt{s}=7$TeV

Prompt production of charmonium $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$TeV. The $χ_{c}$ mesons are identified through their decay to $J/ψγ$, with $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$ using photons that converted in the detector. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector, is used to measure the relative prompt production rate of $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$ as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum from 3 to 20 GeV$/c$. First evidence for $χ_{c0}$ meson production at a high-energy hadron collider is also presented.

Measurement of $C\!P$ asymmetries in two-body $B_{(s)}^{0}$-meson decays to charged pions and kaons

The time-dependent $C\!P$ asymmetries in $B^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_s^0\to K^+\!K^-$ decays are measured using a data sample of $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The same data sample is used to measure the time-integrated $C\!P$ asymmetries in $B^0\to K^+π^-$ and $B_s^0\toπ^+ K^-$ decays. The results are $C_{π^+π^-} = -0.34 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01$, $S_{π^+π^-} = -0.63 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.01$, $C_{K^+\!K^-} = 0.20 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.02$, $S_{K^+\!K^-} = 0.18 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.02$, $C_{K^+\!K^-}^{ΔΓ} = -0.79 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.10$, $A_{C\!P}^{B^0} = -0.084 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.003$, and $A_{C\!P}^{B_s^0} = 0.213 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.007$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for $C\!P$ violation is found in the $B_s^0\to K^+\!K^-$ decay for the first time.

Search for CP violation using triple product asymmetries in $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$, $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}K^{+}K^{-}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+}$ decays

A search for $C$P and $P$ violation using triple-product asymmetries is performed with $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$, $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}K^{+}K^{-}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+}$ decays. The data sample corresponds to integrated luminosities of 1.0fb$^{-1}$ and 2.0fb$^{-1}$, recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7TeV and 8TeV, respectively. The $CP$- and $P$-violating asymmetries are measured both integrating over all phase space and in specific phase-space regions. No significant deviation from $CP$ or $P$ symmetry is found. The first observation of $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pK^{-}χ_{c0}(1P)(\toπ^{+}π^{-}, K^{+}K^{-})$ decay is also reported.

Measurement of $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ and 8 TeV

The inclusive $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry is measured in $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} =7$ and 8 TeV. Promptly produced $D_s^{\pm}$ mesons are used, which decay as $D_s^{\pm}\toϕπ^{\pm}$, with $ϕ\to K^+K^-$. The measurement is performed in bins of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, covering the range $2.5<p_{\rm T}<25.0$ GeV$/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$. No kinematic dependence is observed. Evidence of nonzero $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry is found with a significance of 3.3 standard deviations.

Observation of the decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$

The decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ is observed using $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $fb^{-1}$. The ratio of branching fractions between $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ and $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^-$ decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^-)} = 0.0540 \pm 0.0023 \pm 0.0032. \end{equation*} Two resonant structures are observed in the $ Λ_c^+ π^-$ mass spectrum of the ${Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p\overline{p} π^-}$ decays, corresponding to the $Σ_c(2455)^0$ and $Σ_c^{*}(2520)^0$ states. The ratios of branching fractions with respect to the decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ are \begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Σ_c^0 p\overline{p})\times\mathcal{B}(Σ_c^0\to Λ_c^+ π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)} = 0.089\pm0.015\pm0.006, \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Σ_c^{*0} p\overline{p})\times\mathcal{B}(Σ_c^{*0}\to Λ_c^+ π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)} = 0.119\pm0.020\pm0.014. \end{align*} In all of the above results, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The phase space is also examined for the presence of dibaryon resonances. No evidence for such resonances is found.

Measurement of $Υ$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV

The production cross-sections of $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $277 \pm 11$ $\rm pb^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment in 2015. The $Υ$ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode $Υ\toμ^{+}μ^{-}$. The differential production cross-sections times the dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the $Υ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, over the range $0 < p_{\rm T}< 30$ GeV/c and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to the LHCb measurement at $\sqrt{s}$= 8 TeV are also determined. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions based on NRQCD.
