Localizability in de Sitter space for 2+1 dimensions

We extended the notion of Newton-Wigner localization, already constructed in the bi-dimensional de Sitter space, to the tri-dimensional case for both principal and complementary series. We identify the one-particle subspace, generated by the positive-energy modes solution of the Klein-Gordon equation, as an irreducible representation of the de Sitter group. The time-evolution of the Newton-Wigner operator was obtained explicitly, and for the complementary series the evolution is trivial, i.e., there are no dynamics. Also, we discussed heuristically the existing sign ambiguity when we do not require as a postulate that the Newton-Wigner functions must be proportional to their respective solutions in the representation of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation.

Time of ocurrence observables: expanding to other symmetries

Recent works have proposed the use of the formalism of Positive Operator Valued Measures to describe time measurements in quantum mechanics. This work aims to expand on the work done by other authors, by generalizing the previously proposed construction method of such measures to include causal Poincaré transformations, in order to construct measures which are covariant with respect to such transformations.

Pure and mixed states

We present a review on the notion of pure states and mixtures as mathematical concepts that apply for both classical and quantum physical theories, as well as for any other theory depending on statistical description. Here, states will be presented as expectation values on suitable algebras of observables, in a manner intended for the non-specialist reader; accordingly, basic literature on the subject will be provided. Examples will be exposed together with a discussion on their meanings and implications. An example will be shown where a pure quantum state converges to a classical mixture of particles as Planck's constant tends to zero.

Localizability in de Sitter space

An analogue of the Newton-Wigner position operator is defined for a massive neutral scalar field in de Sitter space. The one-particle subspace of the theory, consisting of positive-energy solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation selected by the Hadamard condition, is identified with an irreducible representation of de Sitter group. Postulates of localizability analogous to those written by Wightman for fields in Minkowski space are formulated on it, and a unique solution is shown to exist. A simple expression for the time-evolution of the operator is presented.

The Moore-Penrose Pseudoinverse. A Tutorial Review of the Theory

In the last decades the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse has found a wide range of applications in many areas of Science and became a useful tool for physicists dealing, for instance, with optimization problems, with data analysis, with the solution of linear integral equations, etc. The existence of such applications alone should attract the interest of students and researchers in the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse and in related sub jects, like the singular values decomposition theorem for matrices. In this note we present a tutorial review of the theory of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse. We present the first definitions and some motivations and, after obtaining some basic results, we center our discussion on the Spectral Theorem and present an algorithmically simple expression for the computation of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse of a given matrix. We do not claim originality of the results. We rather intend to present a complete and self-contained tutorial review, useful for those more devoted to applications, for those more theoretically oriented and for those who already have some working knowledge of the sub ject.

The Coulomb phase shift revisited

We investigate the Coulomb phase shift, and derive and analyze new and more precise analytical formulae. We consider next to leading order terms to the Stirling approximation, and show that they are important at small values of the angular momentum $l$ and other regimes. We employ the uniform approximation. The use of our expressions in low energy scattering of charged particles is discussed and some comparisons are made with other approximation methods.

Multiple classical limits in relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum mechanics

The existence of a classical limit describing interacting particles in a second-quantized theory of identical particles with bosonic symmetry is proved. This limit exists in addition to a previously established classical limit with a classical field behavior, showing that the limit $\hbar \to 0$ of the theory is not unique. An analogous result is valid for a free massive scalar field: two distinct classical limits are proved to exist, describing a system of particles or a classical field. The introduction of local operators in order to represent kinematical properties of interest is shown to break the permutation symmetry under some localizability conditions, allowing the study of individual particle properties.

Topological low-temperature limit of Z(2) spin-gauge theory in three dimensions

We study Z(2) lattice gauge theory on triangulations of a compact 3-manifold. We reformulate the theory algebraically, describing it in terms of the structure constants of a bidimensional vector space H equipped with algebra and coalgebra structures, and prove that in the low-temperature limit H reduces to a Hopf Algebra, in which case the theory becomes equivalent to a topological field theory. The degeneracy of the ground state is shown to be a topological invariant. This fact is used to compute the zeroth- and first-order terms in the low-temperature expansion of Z for arbitrary triangulations. In finite temperatures, the algebraic reformulation gives rise to new duality relations among classical spin models, related to changes of basis of H.

Time Evolution of Two-Level Systems Driven by Periodic Fields

In this paper we study the time evolution of a class of two-level systems driven by periodic fields in terms of new convergent perturbative expansions for the associated propagator U(t). The main virtue of these expansions is that they do not contain secular terms, leading to a very convenient method for quantitatively studying the long-time behaviour of that systems. We present a complete description of an algorithm to numerically compute the perturbative expansions. In particular, we applied the algorithm to study the case of an ac-dc field (monochromatic interaction), exploring various situations and showing results on (time-dependent) observable quantities, like transition probabilities. For a simple ac field, we analised particular situations where an approximate effect of dynamical localisation is exhibited by the driven system. The accuracy of our calculations was tested measuring the unitarity of the propagator U(t), resulting in very small deviations, even for very long times compared to the cycle of the driving field.

Perturbative Analysis of Dynamical Localisation

In this paper we extend previous results on convergent perturbative solutions of the Schroedinger equation of a class of periodically time-dependent two-level systems. The situation treated here is particularly suited for the investigation of two-level systems exhibiting the phenomenon of (approximate) dynamical localisation. We also present a convergent perturbative expansion for the secular frequency and discuss in detail the particular case of monochromatic interactions (ac-dc fields), providing a complete perturbative solution for that case. Our method is based on a ``renormalisation'' procedure, which we develop in a more systematic way here. For being free of secular terms and uniformly convergent in time, our expansions allow a rigorous study of the long-time behaviour of such systems and are also well-suited for numerical computations, as we briefly discuss, leading to very accurate calculations of quantities like transition probabilities for very long times compared to the cycles of the external field.

Aspects of Two-Level Systems under External Time Dependent Fields

The dynamics of two-level systems in time-dependent backgrounds is under consideration. We present some new exact solutions in special backgrounds decaying in time. On the other hand, following ideas of Feynman, Vernon and Hellwarth, we discuss in detail the possibility to reduce the quantum dynamics to a classical Hamiltonian system. This, in particular, opens the possibility to directly apply powerful methods of classical mechanics (e.g. KAM methods) to study the quantum system. Following such an approach, we draw conclusions of relevance for ``quantum chaos'' when the external background is periodic or quasi-periodic in time.

Strong Coupling Theory of Two Level Atoms in Periodic Fields

We present a new convergent strong coupling expansion for two-level atoms in external periodic fields, free of secular terms. As a first application, we show that the coherent destruction of tunnelling is a third-order effect. We also present an exact treatment of the high-frequency region, and compare it with the theory of averaging. The qualitative frequency spectrum of the transition probability amplitude contains an effective Rabi frequency.

Converging Perturbative Solutions of the Schroedinger Equation for a Two-Level System with a Hamiltonian Depending Periodically on Time

We study the Schroedinger equation of a class of two-level systems under the action of a periodic time-dependent external field in the situation where the energy difference 2epsilon between the free energy levels is sufficiently small with respect to the strength of the external interaction. Under suitable conditions we show that this equation has a solution in terms of converging power series expansions in epsilon. In contrast to other expansion methods, like in the Dyson expansion, the method we present is not plagued by the presence of ``secular terms''. Due to this feature we were able to prove absolute and uniform convergence of the Fourier series involved in the computation of the wave functions and to prove absolute convergence of the epsilon-expansions leading to the ``secular frequency'' and to the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of the wave function.

Dyonic Sectors and Intertwiner Connections in 2+1-dimensional Lattice Z_N-Higgs Models

We construct dyonic states in 2+1-dimensional lattice Z_N-Higgs models, i.e., states which are both, electrically and magnetically charged. The associated Hilbert spaces carry charged representations of the observable algebra, the global transfer matrix and a unitary implementation of the group of spatial lattice translations. We prove that for coinciding total charges these representations are dynamically equivalent and we construct a local intertwiner connection depending on a path in the space of charge distributions. The holonomy of this connection is given by Z_N-valued phases. This will be the starting point for a construction of scattering states with anyon statistics in a subsequent paper.
