Study of $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$

The decays $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$ have been investigated with a sample of 225.2 million $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p})=(2.112\pm0.004\pm0.031)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to n\bar{n})=(2.07\pm0.01\pm0.17)\times10^{-3}$. Distributions of the angle $θ$ between the proton or anti-neutron and the beam direction are well described by the form $1+α\cos^2θ$, and we find $α=0.595\pm0.012\pm0.015$ for $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $α=0.50\pm0.04\pm0.21$ for $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$. Our branching-fraction results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes describing the $J/ψ\to N\bar{N}$ decay.

Measurements of the mass and width of the eta_c using psi' -> gamma eta_c

The mass and width of the lowest lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the eta_c, are measured using a data sample of 1.06x10^8 psi' decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates interference between the signal reaction, psi' -> gamma eta_c, and a non-resonant radiative background to successfully describe the line shape of the eta_c. We measure the eta_c mass to be 2984.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.6 MeV/c^2 and the total width to be 32.0 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

First observation of the M1 transition $ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)$

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(2S)\to γη_c(2S) with η_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 Kπand K^+K^-π^0 gave an η_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar K π), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.

Two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M $ψ^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and $Γ(χ_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $λ=0$ and helicity $λ=2$ components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$.

First observation of $η(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)π^0$

The decays $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^+π^-π^0$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^0π^0π^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $η(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)π^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $η'$ are also measured precisely.

Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.

Determination of the $\mathbf{Σ(1385)^{0}/Λ(1405)}$ ratio in p+p collisions at 3.5 GeV

The aim of the present analysis is to determine the relative production cross sections of the $Λ$(1405) and $Σ(1385)^{0}$ resonances in p+p collisions at E$_{kin}$=3.5 GeV measured with HADES. Upper and lower limits have been determined for the ratio $σ_{(Σ(1385)^{0}+p+K^{+})}/σ_{(Λ(1405)+p+K^{+})}=0.76_{-0.26}^{+0.54}$. The knowledge of this ratio is an essential input for the analysis of the decay $Λ(1405)\rightarrowΣ^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, where an unambiguous separation of the $Λ$(1405) and $Σ(1385)^{0}$ signals is not possible.

Inclusive dielectron spectra in p+p collisions at 3.5 GeV

We present the inclusive invariant-mass, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of dielectrons (e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ pairs) in p+p interactions at 3.5 GeV beam kinetic energy. In the vector-meson mass region, a distinct peak corresponding to direct $ω$ decays is reconstructed with 2% mass resolution. The data is compared to predictions from three model calculations. Due to the large acceptance of the HADES apparatus for $e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant masses above 0.2 GeV/$c^{2}$ and for transverse pair momenta p$_{t}$ $ <$ 1 GeV/$c$, acceptance corrections are to a large extent model independent. This allows us to extract from dielectron data for the first time at this energy the inclusive production cross sections for light vector mesons. Inclusive production cross sections for $π^o$ and $η$ mesons are also reported. The obtained results will serve as an important reference for the study of vector meson production in proton-nucleus and heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, using this data, an improved value for the upper bound of the branching ratio for direct $η$ decays into the electron-positron channel is obtained.

Baryonic resonances close to the Kbar-N threshold: the case of Sigma(1385)^+ in pp collisions

We present results of an exclusive measurement of the first excited state of the Sigma hyperon, Sigma(1385)^+, produced in p+p -> Sigma^+ + K^+ + n at 3.5 GeV beam energy. The extracted data allow to study in detail the invariant mass distribution of the Sigma(1385)^+. The mass distribution is well described by a relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a maximum at m_0 = 1383.2 +- 0.9 MeV/c^2 and a width of 40.2 +- 2.1 MeV/c^2. The exclusive production cross-section comes out to be 22.27 +- 0.89 +- 1.56 +3.07 -2.10 mu b. Angular distributions of the Sigma(1385)^+ in different reference frames are found to be compatible with the hypothesis that 33 % of Sigma(1385)^+ result from the decay of an intermediate Delta^{++} resonance.

Probing onset of strong localization and electron-electron interactions with the presence of direct insulator-quantum Hall transition

We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a disordered two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Features of the strong localization leading to the quantum Hall effect are observed after the 2DES undergoes a direct insulator-quantum Hall transition with increasing the perpendicular magnetic field. However, such a transition does not correspond to the onset of strong localization. The temperature dependences of the Hall resistivity and Hall conductivity reveal the importance of the electron-electron interaction effects to the observed transition in our study.

Review of Experimental Studies of $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar D$ Decays

We review the progress on experimental studies of the non-$D\bar D$ decays of the $ψ(3770)$ resonance. With the world average of the observed cross sections for $D\bar D$ production measured at 3.773 GeV by the MARK-I, MARK-II, BES and CLEO Collaborations, combined together with the cross section for $ψ(3770)$ production at its peak as well as initial state radiative correction factor, we find that the non-$D\bar D$ branching fraction of $ψ(3770)$ decays is $B[ψ(3770)\to {\rm non}-D\bar D]=(19.8\pm 1.8 \pm 5.6)%$, which is consistent within error with $B[ψ(3770)\to {\rm non}-D\bar D]=(14.7\pm 3.2)%$ measured previously by the BES Collaboration. In addition, a global amplitude analysis of the cross sections for $e^+e^- \to {\rm LH}$ (LH= light hadron) measured by the CLEO Collaboration shows that the light hadron branching fraction of $ψ(3770)$ decays can be as large as about 11%. Combing the totally measured hadronic and electromegnatic transition rate together with the light hadron branching fraction in the decays of $ψ(3770)$ yields the total non-$D\bar D$ branching fraction in the decays of $ψ(3770)$ to be about 13%.

Are there the VP couplings in the psi(3770) non-charmed decays hidden behind the current experiment measurements?

A global analysis of the full amplitudes for $e^+e^- \to$ VP (Vector and Pseudoscalar) channels at $\sqrt{s}$ =3.773 GeV and 3.670 GeV, which were measured by the CLEO-c Collaboration, shows that those measurements are essentially nontrivial for searching for the $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar D$ decays. Unlike the nearly negative verdict on the $ψ(3770)$ strong decays to the VP channels in the original analysis of the CLEO-c data, there exist some unusual solutions that predict the remarkable strength of SU(3) symmetry VP decay of $ψ(3770)$ resonance, which give some clue to understand the mechanism of $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar D$ decays and to reexplain the well-known $ρ-π$ puzzle in the J/$ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays.

The q-nonadditivity of nonextensive statistics is not a true physical property

This is a note showing that, contrary to our lasting belief, the nonadditivity X(1+2)=X(1)+X(2)+αX(1)X(2) is not a true physical property. αin this expression cannot be unique for a given system. It unavoidably depends on how one mathematically divides the system and cannot be used to characterize nonadditivity. As a matter of fact, its use is mathematically inconsistent.

Physics at BES-III

This physics book provides detailed discussions on important topics in $τ$-charm physics that will be explored during the next few years at \bes3 . Both theoretical and experimental issues are covered, including extensive reviews of recent theoretical developments and experimental techniques. Among the subjects covered are: innovations in Partial Wave Analysis (PWA), theoretical and experimental techniques for Dalitz-plot analyses, analysis tools to extract absolute branching fractions and measurements of decay constants, form factors, and CP-violation and \DzDzb-oscillation parameters. Programs of QCD studies and near-threshold tau-lepton physics measurements are also discussed.

A Monte Carlo Generator for Full Simulation of e+e- to hadrons Cross section Scan Experiment

A generator with $α^2$ order radiative correction effects, including both the initial state radiative corrections and the photon vacuum polarization corrections, is built for the full simulation of $e^+e^- \to hadrons $ in cross section scan experiment in the quarkonium energy region. The contributions from the hadron production structures including the resonances of $1^{--}$ quarkonium families and the light hadrons spectrum below 2 GeV as well as the QED continuum hadron spectrum are all taken into account in the event generation. It was employed successfully to determine the detection efficiency for selection of the events of $e^+e^-\to hadrons$ from the data taken in the energy region from 3.650 GeV to 3.872 GeV covering both the $ψ(3686)$ and $ψ(3770)$ resonances in BES experiment. The generator reproduces the properties of hadronic event production and inclusive decays well.

Determination of the branching fractions for $ψ(3770) \to D^0 \bar D^0, D^+D^-,D\bar D$ and $ψ(3770) \to {\rm non-}D\bar D$

The branching fractions for $ψ(3770) \to D^0 \bar D^0, D^+D^-,D\bar D$ and $ψ(3770) \to {\rm non-}D\bar D$ are determined based on the cross sections for $ψ(3770)$ and $D \bar D$ production measured by BES Collaboration. From its recent publications we determine the branching fractions for $ψ(3770) \to D^0 \bar D^0, D^+D^-$ and $ψ(3770) \to D\bar D$ to be $(52.2\pm 4.8\pm 5.5)%$, $(37.0 \pm 5.0 \pm 4.3)%$ and $(89.1 \pm 6.9 \pm 9.2)%$, respectively. The latter one implies the branching fraction for $ψ(3770) \to {\rm non-}D\bar D$ to be $(10.9 \pm 6.9 \pm 9.2)%$, corresponding the inclusive ${\rm non-}D \bar D$ partial width $Γ(ψ(3770) \to {\rm non-}D\bar D) = (2.8 \pm 1.8 \pm 2.4)$ MeV. Meanwhile we determine the observed cross section for $non-D\bar D$ event production from $ψ(3770)$ decays to be $σ^{\rm obs}(ψ(3770)\to non-D\bar D) = (0.72 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.62)$ nb.

Transition between Quantum States in a Parallel-Coupled Double-Quantum-Dot

Strong electron and spin correlations in a double-quantum-dot (DQD) can give rise to different quantum states. We observe a continuous transition from a Kondo state exhibiting a single-peak Kondo resonance to another exhibiting a double peak by increasing the inter-dot-coupling (t) in a parallel-coupled DQD. The transition into the double-peak state provides evidence for spin-entanglement between the excess-electron on each dot. Toward the transition, the peak splitting merges and becomes substantially smaller than t because of strong Coulomb effects. Our device tunability bodes well for future quantum computation applications.
