Theory of Heat Equations for Sigma Functions

We consider the heat equations satisfied by the sigma function associated with a planar curve, extending and developing earlier pioneering work of Buchstaber and Leykin. These heat equations lead to useful {\em linear} recursive relations for the coefficients of power series expansion of the sigma function. In particular we exhibit explicit results for curves of genus 3, and give a new constructive proof of an explicit expression for the main matrix in the theory for {\em any} hyperelliptic curve. We also state and prove a new explicit formula for the eigenvalues of the linear operators associated with this matrix, as well as other practical formulae.

Exact analytic multi-quanta states of the Davydov Dimer

The Davydov model describes amide I energy transfer in proteins without dispersion or dissipation. In spite of five decades of study, there are few exact analytical results, especially for the discrete version of this model. Here we develop two methods to determine the exact orthonormal, multi-quanta, eigenstates of the Davydov dimer. The first method involves the integration of a system of ordinary differential equations and the second method applies purely algebraic methods to this problem. We obtain the general expression of the eigenvalues for any number of quanta and also, as examples, apply the methods to the detailed derivation of the eigenvectors for one to four quanta, plus a brief example in the case of $n=5$ and $n=6$.

2D mobile breather scattering in a hexagonal crystal lattice

We describe, for the first time, the full 2D scattering of long-lived breathers in a model hexagonal lattice of atoms. The chosen system, representing an idealized model of mica, combines a Lennard-Jones interatomic potential with an "egg-box" harmonic potential well surface. We investigate the dependence of breather properties on the ratio of the well depths associated to the interaction and on-site potentials. High values of this ratio lead to large spatial displacements in adjacent chains of atoms and thus enhance the two dimensional character of the quasi-one-dimensional breather solutions. This effect is further investigated during breather-breather collisions by following the constrained energy density function in time for a set of randomly excited mobile breather solutions. Certain collisions lead to 60$^\circ$ scattering, and collisions of mobile and stationary breathers can generate a rich variety of states.

Nonlinear propagating localized modes in a 2D hexagonal crystal lattice

In this paper we consider a 2D hexagonal crystal lattice model first proposed by Marin, Eilbeck and Russell in 1998. We perform a detailed numerical study of nonlinear propagating localized modes, that is, propagating discrete breathers and kinks. The original model is extended to allow for arbitrary atomic interactions, and to allow atoms to travel out of the unit cell. A new on-site potential is considered with a periodic smooth function with hexagonal symmetry. We are able to confirm the existence of long-lived propagating discrete breathers. Our simulations show that, as they evolve, breathers appear to localize in frequency space, i.e. the energy moves from sidebands to a main frequency band. Our numerical findings contribute to the open question of whether exact moving breather solutions exist in 2D hexagonal layers in physical crystal lattices.

Periods of second kind differentials of (n,s)-curves

For elliptic curves, expressions for the periods of elliptic integrals of the second kind in terms of theta-constants, have been known since the middle of the 19th century. In this paper we consider the problem of generalizing these results to curves of higher genera, in particular to a special class of algebraic curves, the so-called $(n,s)$-curves. It is shown that the representations required can be obtained by the comparison of two equivalent expressions for the projective connection, one due to Fay-Wirtinger and the other from Klein-Weierstrass. As a principle example, we consider the case of the genus two hyperelliptic curve, and a number of new Thomae and Rosenhain-type formulae are obtained. We anticipate that our analysis for the genus two curve can be extended to higher genera hyperelliptic curves, as well as to other classes of $(n,s)$ non-hyperelliptic curves.

Numerical simulations of nonlinear modes in mica: past, present and future

We review research on the role of nonlinear coherent phenomena (e.g breathers and kinks) in the formation linear decorations in mica crystal. The work is based on a new model for the motion of the mica hexagonal K layer, which allows displacement of the atoms from the unit cell. With a simple piece-wise polynomial inter-particle potential, we verify the existence of localized long-lived breathers in an idealized lattice at 0K. Moreover, our model allows us to observe long-lived localized kinks. We study the interactions of such localized modes along a lattice direction, and in addition demonstrate fully two dimensional scattering of such pulses for the first time. For large interatomic forces we observe a spreading horseshoe-shaped wave, a type of shock wave but with a breather profile.

Abelian functions associated with genus three algebraic curves

We develop the theory of Abelian functions associated with algebraic curves. The growth in computer power and an advancement of efficient symbolic computation techniques has allowed for recent progress in this area. In this paper we focus on the genus three cases, comparing the two canonical classes of hyperelliptic and trigonal curves. We present new addition formulae, derive bases for the spaces of Abelian functions and discuss the differential equations such functions satisfy.

Breathers and kinks in a simulated crystal experiment

We develop a simple 1D model for the scattering of an incoming particle hitting the surface of mica crystal, the transmission of energy through the crystal by a localized mode, and the ejection of atom(s) at the incident or distant face. This is the first attempt to model the experiment described in Russell and Eilbeck in 2007 (EPL, v. 78, 10004). Although very basic, the model shows many interesting features, for example a complicated energy dependent transition between breather modes and a kink mode, and multiple ejections at both incoming and distant surfaces. In addition, the effect of a heavier surface layer is modelled, which can lead to internal reflections of breathers or kinks at the crystal surface.

Sigma, tau and Abelian functions of algebraic curves

We compare and contrast three different methods for the construction of the differential relations satisfied by the fundamental Abelian functions associated with an algebraic curve. We realize these Abelian functions as logarithmic derivatives of the associated sigma function. In two of the methods, the use of the tau function, expressed in terms of the sigma function, is central to the construction of differential relations between the Abelian functions.

Interaction of moving discrete breathers with interstitial defects

In this paper, interstitial migration generated by scattering with a mobile breather is investigated numerically in a Frenkel-Kontorova one-dimensional lattice. Consistent with experimental results it is shown that interstitial diffusion is more likely and faster than vacancy diffusion. Our simulations support the hypothesis that a long-range energy transport mechanism involving moving nonlinear vibrational excitations may significantly enhance the mobility of point defects in a crystal lattice.

Abelian functions associated with a cyclic tetragonal curve of genus six

We develop the theory of Abelian functions defined using a tetragonal curve of genus six, discussing in detail the cyclic curve $y^4 = x^5 + λ_4x^4 + λ_3x^3 + λ_2x^2 + λ_1x + λ_0$. We construct Abelian functions using the multivariate $σ$-function associated to the curve, generalising the theory of the Weierstrass $\wp$-function. We demonstrate that such functions can give a solution to the KP-equation, outlining how a general class of solutions could be generated using a wider class of curves. We also present the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the functions, the solution of the Jacobi Inversion Problem, a power series expansion for $σ(\bu)$ and a new addition formula.

Thresholds for breather solutions on the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity

We consider the question of existence of periodic solutions (called breather solutions or discrete solitons) for the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity. Theoretical and numerical results are proved concerning the existence and nonexistence of periodic solutions by a variational approach and a fixed point argument. In the variational approach we are restricted to DNLS lattices with Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is proved that there exists parameters (frequency or nonlinearity parameters) for which the corresponding minimizers satisfy explicit upper and lower bounds on the power. The numerical studies performed indicate that these bounds behave as thresholds for the existence of periodic solutions. The fixed point method considers the case of infinite lattices. Through this method, the existence of a threshold is proved in the case of saturable nonlinearity and an explicit theoretical estimate which is independent on the dimension is given. The numerical studies, testing the efficiency of the bounds derived by both methods, demonstrate that these thresholds are quite sharp estimates of a threshold value on the power needed for the the existence of a breather solution. This it justified by the consideration of limiting cases with respect to the size of the nonlinearity parameters and nonlinearity exponents.

Abelian Functions for Trigonal Curves of Genus Three

We develop the theory of generalized Weierstrass sigma- and \wp-functions defined on a trigonal curve of genus three. In particular we give a list of the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the \wp-functions, a proof that the coefficients of the power series expansion of the sigma-function are polynomials of moduli parameters, and the derivation of two addition formulae.

Abelian Functions for Cyclic Trigonal Curves of Genus Four

We discuss the theory of generalized Weierstrass $σ$ and $\wp$ functions defined on a trigonal curve of genus four, following earlier work on the genus three case. The specific example of the "purely trigonal" (or "cyclic trigonal") curve $y^3=x^5+λ_4 x^4 +λ_3 x^3+λ_2 x^2 +λ_1 x+λ_0$ is discussed in detail, including a list of some of the associated partial differential equations satisfied by the $\wp$ functions, and the derivation of an addition formulae.

Evidence for moving breathers in a layered crystal insulator at 300K

We report the ejection of atoms at a crystal surface caused by energetic breathers which have travelled more than 10^7 unit cells in atomic chain directions. The breathers were created by bombardment of a crystal face with heavy ions. This effect was observed at 300K in the layered crystal muscovite, which has linear chains of atoms for which the surrounding lattice has C_2 symmetry. The experimental techniques described could be used to study breathers in other materials and configurations.

Fast energy transfer mediated by multi-quanta bound states in a nonlinear quantum lattice

By using a Generalized Hubbard model for bosons, the energy transfer in a nonlinear quantum lattice is studied, with special emphasis on the interplay between local and nonlocal nonlinearity. For a strong local nonlinearity, it is shown that the creation of v quanta on one site excites a soliton band formed by bound states involving v quanta trapped on the same site. The energy is first localized on the excited site over a significant timescale and then slowly delocalizes along the lattice. As when increasing the nonlocal nonlinearity, a faster dynamics occurs and the energy propagates more rapidly along the lattice. Nevertheless, the larger is the number of quanta, the slower is the dynamics. However, it is shown that when the nonlocal nonlinearity reaches a critical value, the lattice suddenly supports a very fast energy propagation whose dynamics is almost independent on the number of quanta. The energy is transfered by specific bound states formed by the superimposition of states involving v-p quanta trapped on one site and p quanta trapped on the nearest neighbour sites, with p=0,..,v-1. These bound states behave as independent quanta and they exhibit a dynamics which is insensitive to the nonlinearity and controlled by the single quantum hopping constant.

Quantum oscillations in a two-mode atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate -- the discrete WKB approach

Quantum effects in a system of coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in the framework of a two-mode model are studied numerically and analytically, using the discrete WKB approach. In contrast to the mean-field approximation, the WKB analytical results are in a very good agreement with numerical results. The quantum fluctuations of the atomic and molecular populations are calculated, and found to be of the same order of magnitude as their mean values.
