Diagnosing the impact of relativistically intense prepulse on few-picosecond timeframes for short scale length laser-matter interactions

With the rapid proliferation of multi-petawatt (MPW) lasers globally, a new era of high-energy density science promises to emerge within the next decade. However, precise control over how light at these ultra-relativistic intensities interacts with matter (especially with solid-density targets) will be crucial to fully realize the cutting-edge scientific advancements and technological breakthroughs that the MPW regime promises to unlock. In this manuscript, we present experimental results, supported by numerical simulations, which show how intense prepulse activity on few-ps ($10^{-12}$ s) timescales leads to rapid shifts in the steepness of the preplasma generated on the surface of ultra-thin nanofoil targets. By combining a single-shot frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) autocorrelation device to diagnose on-shot incident laser pulse contrast, with coherent synchrotron emission (CSE) from relativistic laser plasmas as a probe for evolving plasma-scale length conditions, we provide an experimental benchmark for laser contrast on forthcoming MPW facilities, where high contrast on few-ps timescales will be essential for the next generation of laser-solid interactions.

Single-Shot 60 dB Dynamic Range Laser Contrast Measurement Using Self-Referencing Spectral Interferometry

High dynamic range contrast measurement of laser pulses is typically obtained by cross-correlating the laser pulse with a self-generated reference laser pulse directly in the temporal domain. Alternatively, it is also possible to measure the spectral interferogram of the laser pulse with the references pulse in the spectral domain, from which the high dynamic range contrast measurement can be extracted using inverse Fourier-transformation. Here, we demonstrate single-shot 60 dB dynamic range laser contrast measurement by inverse Fourier-transforming the measured spectral interferogram into temporal domain. The result directly provides the cross-correlation of the laser pulse with the reference pulse provided there is enough time-delay imposed between the laser and reference pulses. Then method is cross-calibrated by measuring known pre-pulses along with scanning third-order auto-correlator measurements.

Fast ignition driven by quasi-monoenergetic ions: Optimal ion type and reduction of ignition energies with an ion beam array

Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets driven by quasi-monoenergetic ion beams is investigated by means of numerical simulations. Light and intermediate ions such as lithium, carbon, aluminium and vanadium have been considered. Simulations show that the minimum ignition energies of an ideal configuration of compressed Deuterium-Tritium are almost independent on the ion atomic number. However, they are obtained for increasing ion energies, which scale, approximately, as Z^2, where Z is the ion atomic number. Assuming that the ion beam can be focused into 10 μm spots, a new irradiation scheme is proposed to reduce the ignition energies. The combination of intermediate Z ions, such as 5.5 GeV vanadium, and the new irradiation scheme allows a reduction of the number of ions required for ignition by, roughly, three orders of magnitude when compared with the standard proton fast ignition scheme.

Scaling of laser-driven ion energies in the relativistic transparent regime

Laser-driven ions have compelling properties and their potential use for medical applications has attracted a huge global interest. One of the major challenges of these applications is generating beams of the required energies. To date, there has been no systematic study of the effect of laser intensity on the generation of laser-driven ions from ultrathin foils during relativistic transparency. Here we present a scaling for ion energies with respect to the on-target laser intensity and in considering target thickness we find an optimum thickness closely related to the experimentally observed relativistic transparency. A steep linear scaling with the normalized laser amplitude a0 has been measured and verified with PIC simulations. In contrast to TNSA, this scaling is much steeper and has been measured for ions with Z > 1. Following our results, ion energies exceeding 100MeV/amu are already accessible with currently available laser systems enabling realization of numerous advanced applications

Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets by laser-driven carbon beams

Two-dimensional simulations of ion beam driven fast ignition are presented. Ignition energies of protons with Maxwellian spectrum and carbon ions with quasimonoenergetic and Maxwellian energy distributions are evaluated. The effect of the coronal plasma surrounding the compressed deuterium-tritium is studied for three different fuel density distributions. It is found that quasi- monoenergetic ions have better coupling with the compressed deuterium-tritium and substantially lower ignition energies. Comparison of quasimonoenergetic carbon ions and relativistic electrons as ignitor beams shows similar laser energy requirements, provided that a laser to quasimonoenergetic carbon ion conversion efficiency around 10% can be achieved.
