Precise Measurement and Control of Radon Progeny on Detector Surfaces

In low-background particle physics experiments, surface deposition of radon progeny presents a significant background challenge. To characterize this contamination, a high-sensitivity surface $α$-activity measurement system was developed, which employs a 3$\times$3 Si-PIN array operating in vacuum to perform $α$-spectroscopy on samples. The system was calibrated using Poly(Methyl MethAcrylate) (PMMA) plates exposed to a controlled high-radon atmosphere, achieving an energy resolution of 2.09 \% for 5.30~MeV $α$ particles and a one-day measurement sensitivity of 1.27~$μ$Bq/cm$^2$ for $^{210}$Po surface activity. Using this system and a self-built high radon concentration chamber, the deposition behavior of radon progeny on PMMA surfaces was investigated. Results indicate a non-monotonic dependence on exposure time, a significant enhancement of deposition with increasing negative surface electrostatic potential, and a strong modulation by ambient humidity. This paper details the apparatus design, calibration, and experimental study of radon progeny deposition dynamics on PMMA surfaces.

Measurement of radon concentration in the output water of the 100~t/h ultrapure water system at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose low background liquid scintillator detector, was proposed primarily to determine the neutrino mass ordering. To mitigate radioactivity from surrounding rock and enable cosmic muon tagging, its central detector is immersed in a Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD) containing 40~ktons of ultrapure water instrumented with 2400 20-inch micro-channel plate photomultiplier tubes. Stringent radiopurity requirements mandate a radon concentration below 10 ~mBq/m$^3$ in the WCD. To achieve this, we developed a two-stage (ground and underground) ultrapure water system with 100~t/h production capacity, integrating a five-stage degassing membrane for radon removal. A novel microbubble technique was implemented to optimize the degassing membranes' radon removal efficiency. The synergistic combination of the microbubble technology and the multistage degassing membranes achieved a radon removal efficiency exceeding 99.9\%, reducing the system's output to 0.61 $\pm$ 0.50~mBq/m$^3$ in recirculation mode, surpassing design specifications and establishing world-leading performance standards. This paper details the ultrapure system architecture, quantifies the radon contributions of each device, and presents a comprehensive study on microbubble-augmented membrane degassing for low radon ultra-pure water production in a 100~t/h water system.

Comprehensive Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum and Flux at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the precise measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full data set of 4.7 million inverse-beta-decay (IBD) candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the IBD yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ isotopes are measured with 1.3$\%$, 3$\%$ and 8$\%$ uncertainties respectively near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ fluxes are precisely measured to be $5.84\pm0.07$, $6.16\pm0.12$ and $4.16\pm0.21$ in units of $10^{-43} \mathrm{cm^2/fission}$. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller (HM) model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute (KI) measurement and the latest Summation Model (SM2023). The Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with KI and SM2023 models, but disagrees with HM model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Oscillation Amplitude and Frequency via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $Δm^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $Δm^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result.

Search for a sub-eV sterile neutrino using Daya Bay's full dataset

This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with $\sin^2 2θ_{14} \gtrsim 0.01$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level in the region of $0.01$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1 $ eV$^2$. This result represents the world-leading constraints in the region of $2 \times 10^{-4}$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 $ eV$^2$.

Charged-current non-standard neutrino interactions at Daya Bay

The full data set of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is used to probe the effect of the charged current non-standard interactions (CC-NSI) on neutrino oscillation experiments. Two different approaches are applied and constraints on the corresponding CC-NSI parameters are obtained with the neutrino flux taken from the Huber-Mueller model with a $5\%$ uncertainty. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$. For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ for the former and $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$, we obtain $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for both cases.

Development of low-radon ultra-pure water for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO) is a state-of-the-art liquid scintillator-based neutrino physics experiment under construction in South China. To reduce the background from external radioactivities, a water Cherenkov detector composed of 35~kton ultra-pure water and 2,400 20-inch photomultiplier tubes is developed. Even after specialized treatment, ultra-pure water still contains trace levels of radioactive elements that can contribute to the detector background. Among which $^{222}$Rn is particularly significant. To address this, an online radon removal system based on the JUNO prototype has been developed. By integrating micro-bubble generators to enhance degasser's radon removal efficiency, the radon concentration in water can be reduced to 1~mBq/m$^{3}$ level, meeting the stringent requirements of JUNO. Additionally, a highly sensitive online radon concentration measurement system capable of detecting concentrations $\sim$1~mBq/m$^3$ has been developed to monitor the radon concentration in water. In this paper, the details regarding both systems will be presented.

Developing a $μ$Bq/m$^{3}$ level $^{226}$Ra concentration in water measurement system for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20~kton multi-purpose low background Liquid Scintillator (LS) detector, was proposed primarily to determine the neutrino mass ordering. To suppress the radioactivity from the surrounding rocks and tag cosmic muons, the JUNO central detector is submerged in a Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD). In addition to being used in the WCD, ultrapure water is used in LS filling, for which the $^{226}$Ra concentration in water needs to be less than 50~$μ$Bq/m$^3$. To precisely measure the $^{226}$Ra concentration in water, a 6.0~$μ$Bq/m$^3$ $^{226}$Ra concentration in water measurement system has been developed. In this paper, the detail of the measurement system as well as the $^{226}$Ra concentration measurement result in regular EWII ultrapure water will be presented.

First measurement of the yield of $^8$He isotopes produced in liquid scintillator by cosmic-ray muons at Daya Bay

Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. We also measure the production yield of $^9$Li isotopes using well-established methodology. The results, in units of 10$^{-8}μ^{-1}$g$^{-1}$cm$^{2}$, are 0.307$\pm$0.042, 0.341$\pm$0.040, and 0.546$\pm$0.076 for $^8$He, and 6.73$\pm$0.73, 6.75$\pm$0.70, and 13.74$\pm$0.82 for $^9$Li at average muon energies of 63.9~GeV, 64.7~GeV, and 143.0~GeV, respectively. The measured production rate of $^8$He isotopes is more than an order of magnitude lower than any other measurement of cosmogenic isotope production. It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. The results provide future liquid-scintillator-based experiments with improved ability to predict cosmogenic backgrounds.

A study of liquid argon detector's $n$/$γ$ discrimination capability with PMT or SiPM readout

Liquid Argon (LAr) is used as a target material in several current and planned experiments related to dark matter direct searching and neutrino detection. Argon provides excellent Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) capability which could separate the electron recoil backgrounds from the expected nuclear recoil signals. This essay simulated the PSD capability of an LAr detector when PMTs or three kinds of SiPMs are used as photosensors based on the experimental data. The results show that the J-60035 SiPM could help the LAr detector achieve the highest PSD capability event though SiPM's After-Pulse (AP) and Cross-Talk (CT) deteriorate its PSD capability. In addition, the results also show that the effect from AP is greater than CT. This is instructive for selecting photosensors for LAr detectors.

System upgrade for $μ$Bq/m$^3$ level $^{222}$Rn concentration measurement

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multipurpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed for the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as primary physics goal. The central detector will be submerged in a water Cherenkov detector to lower the background from the environment and cosmic muons. Radon is one of the primary background sources. Nitrogen will be used in several sub-systems, and a highly sensitive radon detector has to be developed to measure its radon concentration. A system has been developed based on $^{222}$Rn enrichment of activated carbon and $^{222}$Rn detection based on the electrostatic collection. This paper presents the detail of a $μ$Bq/m$^3$ level $^{222}$Rn concentration measurement system and gives detailed information about how the adsorption coefficient was measured and how the temperature, flow rate, and $^{222}$Rn concentration affect the adsorption coefficient.

Analysis of signal waveform from a midsize liquid argon detetor

The midsize single-phase liquid argon prototype detector, operating at the surface laboratory, is designed to measure scintillation light emitted by the liquid argon (LAr). The detector employs 42 8-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMT) to collect the light. By analyzing the waveform of the signal, important detector characteristics such as the slow decay time constant that characterizes the purity of the liquid argon can be obtained. To describe the signal waveform, a model that considers the TPB re-emission process and the signal reflection effects based on the principles of liquid argon light emission, including fast and slow components of light decay, is used. The TPB re-emission process is introduced using a three-exponential time structure. Additionally, experimental results provide comprehensive validation for a post-peak hump structure, which is attributed to signal reflection.

The First GECAM Observation Results on Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes and Terrestrial Electron Beams

Gravitational-wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space-borne instrument dedicated to monitoring high-energy transients, including Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented a TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs and 2 special TEB-like events are identified during an effective observation time of $\sim$9 months. We show that, with gamma-ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify and distinguish TGFs and TEBs, and measure their temporal and spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF-lightning association rate of $\sim$80\% is obtained between GECAM and GLD360 in east Asia region.

Research of radon diffusion behavior in liquid scintillator

The background caused by radon and its daughters is an important background in the low background liquid scintillator (LS) detectors. The study of the diffusion behaviour of radon in the LS contributes to the analysis of the related background caused by radon. Methodologies and devices for measuring the diffusion coefficient and solubility of radon in materials are developed and described. The radon diffusion coefficient of the LS was measured for the first time and in addition the solubility coefficient was also obtained. In addition, the radon diffusion coefficient of the polyolefine film which is consistent with data in the literature was measured to verify the reliability of the diffusion device.

Precision measurement of reactor antineutrino oscillation at kilometer-scale baselines by Daya Bay

We present a new determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the mass-squared difference $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32}$ using a final sample of $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ inverse beta-decay (IBD) candidates with the final-state neutron captured on gadolinium. This sample was selected from the complete data set obtained by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in 3158 days of operation. Compared to the previous Daya Bay results, selection of IBD candidates has been optimized, energy calibration refined, and treatment of backgrounds further improved. The resulting oscillation parameters are ${\rm sin}^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.0851 \pm 0.0024$, $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = (2.466 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3}{\rm eV}^{2}$ for the normal mass ordering or $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = -(2.571 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^{2}$ for the inverted mass ordering.

Characterization of two SiPM arrays from Hamamatsu and Onsemi for liquid argon detector

Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), a new type of photosensor, is considered a substitute for traditional photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the next generation of dark matter and neutrino detectors, especially in noble gas detectors like liquid argon. However, the design of compact SiPM arrays and their cryogenic electronics that can work in liquid argon is barely developed. Thus, two candidate SiPM arrays from Hamamatsu and Onsemi were selected to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the design. In this work, we successfully developed a cryogenic electronics read-out system that connects and works with 1-inch 4$\times$4 SiPM arrays at 87~K. The power dissipation of amplifiers is less than 10 $μ$W/mm$^2$. Furthermore, multiply significant characteristics of both types of SiPM arrays were measured at liquid argon temperature, such as dark count rate (DCR), breakdown voltage (V${_{bd}}$), single photoelectron (SPE) performance, signal to noise ratio (SNR) and correlated signal probability.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.
