$ζ$-function for a model with spectral dependent boundary conditions

We explore the meromorphic structure of the $ζ$-function associated to the boundary eigenvalue problem of a modified Sturm-Liouville operator subject to spectral dependent boundary conditions at one end of a segment of length $l$. We find that it presents isolated simple poles which follow the general rule valid for second order differential operators subject to standard local boundary conditions. We employ our results to evaluate the determinant of the operator and the Casimir energy of the system it describes, and study its dependence on $l$ for both the massive and the massless cases.

Chiral symmetry restoration in RQED at finite temperature in the supercritical coupling regime

We explore the conditions for chiral symmetry breaking in reduced (or pseudo) quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature in connection with graphene and other 2D-materials with an underlying Dirac behavior of the charge carriers. By solving the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation in rainbow approximation, in a Landau-like gauge and neglecting wavefunction renormalization effects, we find the need of the coupling to exceed a critical value $α_c$ in order for chiral symmetry to be broken, in agreement with known results from other groups. In this supercritical regime, we add the effects of a thermal bath at temperature $T$ and find the critical values of this parameter that leads to chiral symmetry restoration.

On the critical end point in a two-flavor linear sigma model coupled to quarks

We use the linear sigma model coupled to quarks to explore the location of the phase transition lines in the QCD phase diagram from the point of view of chiral symmetry restoration at high temperature and baryon chemical potential. We compute analytically the effective potential in the high- and low-temperature approximations up to sixth order, including the contribution of the ring diagrams to account for the plasma screening properties. We determine the model parameters, namely, the couplings and mass-parameter, from conditions valid at the first order phase transition at vanishing temperature and, using the Hagedorn limiting temperature concept applied to finite baryon density, for a critical baryochemical potential of order of the nucleon mass. We show that when using the set of parameters thus determined, the second order phase transition line (our proxy for the crossover transition) that starts at finite temperature and zero baryon chemical potential converges to the line of first order phase transitions that starts at zero temperature and finite baryon chemical potential to determine the critical end point to lie in the region $5.02<μ_B^{\mbox{CEP}}/T_c<5.18$, $0.14<T^{\mbox{CEP}}/T_c<0.23$, where $T_c$ is the critical transition temperature at zero baryon chemical potential.

Gluon condensate from the Polyakov loop

We estimate the temperature dependence of the gluon condensate from the Polyakov loop effective potential. It is presented how this analytic approach provides a simple picture for the electric gluon condensate around the deconfinement temperature, showing that it drops to zero in a temperature range which is in good agreement with different pure gauge lattice results.

Thermomagnetic correlation lengths of strongly interacting matter in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the correlation length between test quarks with the same electric and color charges in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, considering thermal and magnetic effects. We extract the correlation length from the quark correlation function. The latter is constructed from the probability amplitude to bring a given quark into the plasma, once a previous one with the same quantum numbers is placed at a given distance apart. For temperatures below the transition temperature, the correlation length starts growing as the field strength increases to then decrease for large magnetic fields. For temperatures above the critical temperature, the correlation length continues increasing as the field strength increases. We found that such behavior can be understood as a competition between the tightening induced by the classical magnetic force versus the random thermal motion. For large enough temperatures, the increase of the occupation number contributes to the screening of the interaction between the test particles. The growth of the correlation distance with the magnetic field can be understood as due to the closer proximity between one of the test quarks and the ones popped up from vacuum, which in turn appear due to the increase of the occupation number with temperature.

Casimir Energy in a Bounded Gross-Neveu model

In this letter we study some relevant physical parameters of the massless Gross-Neveu model in a finite spatial dimension for different boundary conditions. It is considered the standard homogeneous Hartree Fock solution using zeta function regularization for the study the mass dynamically generated and its respective beta function. It is found that the beta function does not depend on the Boundary conditions. On the other hand, it was considered the Casimir effect of the resulting effective theory. There appears a complex picture where the sign of the generated forces depends on the parameters used in the study.

Thermo-magnetic properties of the strong coupling in the local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the thermo-magnetic properties of the strong coupling constant G and quark mass M entering the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For this purpose, we compute the quark condensate and compare it to lattice QCD (LQCD) results to extract the behavior of G and M as functions of the magnetic field strength and temperature. We find that at zero temperature, where the LQCD condensate is found to monotonically increase with the field strength, M also increases whereas G remains approximately constant. However, for temperatures above the chiral/deconfinement phase transitions, where the LQCD condensate is found to monotonically decrease with increasing field, M and G also decrease monotonically. For finite temperatures, below the transition temperature, we find that both G and M initially grow and then decrease with increasing field strength. To study possible consequences of the extracted temperature and magnetic field dependence of G and M, we compute the pressure and compare to LQCD results, finding an excellent qualitative agreement. In particular, we show that the transverse pressure, as a function of the field strength, is always negative for temperatures below the transition temperature whereas it starts off being positive and then becomes negative for temperatures above the transition temperature, also in agreement with LQCD results. We also show that for the longitudinal pressure to agree with LQCD calculations, the system should be described as a diamagnet. We argue that the turnover of M and G as functions of temperature and field strength is a key element that drives the behavior of the quark condensate going across the transition temperature and provides clues for a better understanding of the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon.

Casimir Energy of an irregular membrane

We compute the Casimir energy which arises in a bi-dimensional surface due to the quantum fluctuations of a scalar field. We assume that the boundaries are irregular and the field obeys Dirichlet condition. We re-parametrize the problem to one which has flat boundary conditions and the irregularity is treated as a perturbation in the Laplace-Beltrami operator which appears. Later, to compute the Casimir energy, we use zeta function regularization. It is compared the results coming from perturbation theory with the WKB method.

Spin Non-commutativity and the Three-Dimensional Harmonic Oscillator

A three-dimensional harmonic oscillator with spin non-commutativity in the phase space is considered. The system has a regular symplectic structure and by using supersymmetric quantum mechanics techniques, the ground state is calculated exactly. We find that this state is infinitely degenerate and it has explicit spontaneous broken symmetry. Analyzing the Heisenberg equations, we show that the total angular momentum is conserved.

(Pseudo)Scalar Charmonium in Finite Temperature QCD

The hadronic parameters of pseudoscalar ($η_c$) and scalar ($χ_c$) charmonium are determined at finite temperature from Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. These parameters are the hadron mass, leptonic decay constant, total width, and continuum threshold ($s_0$). Results for $s_0(T)$ in both channels indicate that $s_0(T)$ starts approximately constant, and then it decreases monotonically with increasing $T$ until it reaches the QCD threshold, $s_{th} = 4 m_Q^2$, at a critical temperature $T = T_c \simeq 180 \; \mbox{MeV}$ interpreted as the deconfinement temperature. The other hadronic parameters behave qualitatively similarly to those of the $J/ψ$, as determined in this same framework. The hadron mass is essentially constant, the total width is initially independent of T, and after $T/T_c \simeq 0.80$ it begins to increase with increasing $T$ up to $T/T_c \simeq 0.90 \; (0.95)$ for $χ_c$ ($η_c$), and subsequently it decreases sharply up to $T \simeq 0.94 \; (0.99) \; T_c$, for $χ_c$ ($η_c$), beyond which the sum rules are no longer valid. The decay constant of $χ_c$ at first remains basically flat up to $T \simeq 0.80\; T_c$, then it starts to decrease up to $T \simeq 0.90 \;T_c$, and finally it increases sharply with increasing $T$. In the case of $η_c$ the decay constant does not change up to $T \simeq 0.80 \;T_c$ where it begins a gentle increase up to $T \simeq 0.95 \;T_c$ beyond which it increases dramatically with increasing $T$. This behaviour contrasts with that of light-light and heavy-light quark systems, and it suggests the survival of the $η_c$ and the $χ_c$ states beyond the critical temperature, as already found for the $J/ψ$ from similar QCD sum rules. These conclusions are very stable against changes in the critical temperature in the wide range $T_c = 180 - 260 \; \mbox{MeV}$.

QCD sum rules and thermal properties of Charmonium in the vector channel

The thermal evolution of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the J/psi resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold is analyzed in the framework of thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. The continuum threshold $s_0$, as in other hadronic channels, decreases with increasing temperature until the PQCD threshold s_0 = 4, m_Q^2 is reached at T \simeq 1.22T_c (m_Q is the charm quark mass) and the J/psi mass is essentially constant in a wide range of temperatures. The other hadronic parameters behave in a very different way from those of light-light and heavy-light quark systems. The total width grows with temperature up to T \simeq 1.04T_c beyond which it decreases sharply with increasing T. The resonance coupling is also initially constant beginning to increase monotonically around T \simeq T_c. This behavior strongly suggests that the J/psi resonance might survive beyond the critical temperature for deconfinement, in agreement with lattice QCD results.

Charmonium in the vector channel at finite temperature from QCD sum rules

Thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules are used to obtain the temperature dependence of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold. The continuum threshold $s_0$, which signals the end of the resonance region and the onset of perturbative QCD (PQCD), behaves as in all other hadronic channels, i.e. it decreases with increasing temperature until it reaches the PQCD threshold $s_0 = 4 m_Q^2$, with $m_Q$ the charm quark mass, at $T\simeq 1.22 T_c$. The rest of the hadronic parameters behave very differently from those of light-light and heavy-light quark systems. The $J$ / $ψ$ mass is essentially constant in a wide range of temperatures, while the total width grows with temperature up to $T \simeq 1.04 T_c$ beyond which it decreases sharply with increasing T. The resonance coupling is also initially constant and then begins to increase monotonically around $T \simeq T_c$. This behaviour of the total width and of the leptonic decay constant provides a strong indication that the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance might survive beyond the critical temperature for deconfinement.

QED vacuum fluctuations and induced electric dipole moment of the neutron

Quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum generate non-linear effects, such as peculiar induced electromagnetic fields. In particular, we show here that an electrically neutral particle, possessing a magnetic dipole moment, develops an induced electric dipole-type moment with unusual angular dependence, when immersed in a quasistatic, constant external electric field. The calculation of this effect is done in the framework of the Euler-Heisenberg effective QED Lagrangian, corresponding to the weak field asymptotic expansion of the effective action to one-loop order. It is argued that the neutron might be a good candidate to probe this signal of non-linearity in QED.

Induced electromagnetic fields in non-linear QED

The Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian is used to obtain general expressions for electric and magnetic fields induced by non-linearity, to leading order in the non-linear expansion parameter, and for quasistatic situations. These expressions are then used to compute the induced electromagnetic fields due to a spherical shell with uniform charge distribution on the surface, in the presence of an external constant magnetic field. The induced electric field contains several multipole terms with unusual angular dependences. Most importantly, the leading term of the induced magnetic field is due to an induced magnetic dipole moment.

Thermal Behaviour of $π-π$ Scattering Lengths in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We calculate the thermal evolution of $π-π$ scattering lengths, in the frame of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The thermal corrections were calculated at the one loop level using Thermofield Dynamics. We present also results for the pion thermal mass. Our procedure implies the modeling of a propagating scalar meson as a resumation of chains of quark bubbles, which is presented explicitly. We compare our results with previous analysis of this problem in the frame of different theoretical approaches.

Heavy-light quark pseudoscalar and vector mesons at finite temperature

The temperature dependence of the mass, leptonic decay constant, and width of heavy-light quark peseudoscalar and vector mesons is obtained in the framework of thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. The leptonic decay constants of both pseudoscalar and vector mesons decrease with increasing $T$, and vanish at a critical temperature $T_c$, while the mesons develop a width which increases dramatically and diverges at $T_c$, where $T_c$ is the temperature for chiral-symmetry restoration. These results indicate the disappearance of hadrons from the spectral function, which then becomes a smooth function of the energy. This is interpreted as a signal for deconfinement at $T=T_c$. In contrast, the masses show little dependence on the temperature, except very close to $T_c$, where the pseudoscalar meson mass increases slightly by 10-20 %, and the vector meson mass decreases by some 20-30 %

Chemical potential as a source of stability for gravitating Skyrmions

A discussion of the stability of self gravitating Skyrmions, with a large winding number N, in a Schwarzschild type of metric, is presented for the case where an isospin chemical potential is introduced. It turns out that the chemical potential stabilizes the behavior of the Skyrmion discussed previously in the literature. This analysis is carried on in the framework of a variational approach using different ansaetze for the radial profile of the Skyrmion. We found a divergent behavior for the size of the Skyrmion, associated to a certain critical value $μ_c$ of the chemical potential. At this point, the mass of the Skyrmion vanishes. $μ_c$ is essentialy independent of gravitating effects. The stability of a large N skyrmion against decays into single particles is also discussed.

Hadrons as Skyrmions in the presence of isospin chemical potential

The stability of the Skyrmion solution in the presence of finite isospin chemical potential $μ$ is considered, showing the existence of a critical value $μ_{c} = 222.8$ MeV where the Skyrmion mass vanishes. Using the Hamiltonian formulation, in terms of collective variables, we discuss the behavior of different skyrmionic parameters as function of the isospin chemical potential ($μ$), such as the energy density, the isoscalar radius and the isoscalar magnetic radius. We found that the radii start to grow very fast for $μ\geq 140$ MeV, suggesting the occurrence of a phase transition.
