The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter-filling

We revisit the problem of the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model, for which the existence of a dimerized phase and a non-zero charge gap had been reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{90}, 247204 (2003). Recently, some objections were raised claiming that the system is neither dimerized nor has a charge gap. In the interest of clarifying this important issue, we show that these objections are based on results obtained under conditions in which the dimer order is artificially suppressed. We use the incontrovertible dimerized phase of the Majumdar-Ghosh point of the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model as a paradigm with which to illustrate this artificial suppression. Finally, by means of extremely accurate DMRG calculations, we show that the charge gap is indeed non-zero in the dimerized phase.

Robust d-wave Pairing Correlations in the Heisenberg Kondo Lattice Model

The Kondo lattice model enlarged by an antiferromagnetic coupling $J_{\rm AF}$ between the localized spins is here investigated using computational techniques. Our results suggest the existence of a d-wave superconducting phase close to half-filling mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. This establishes a closer connection between theory and heavy fermion experiments than currently provided by the standard Kondo lattice model with $J_{\rm AF}$=0.

Absence of a true long-range orbital order in a two-leg Kondo ladder

We investigate, through the density-matrix renormalization group and the Lanczos technique, the possibility of a two-leg Kondo ladder present an incommensurate orbital order. Our results indicate a staggered short-range orbital order at half-filling. Away from half-filling our data are consistent with an incommensurate quasi-long-range orbital order. We also observed that an interaction between the localized spins enhances the rung-rung current correlations.

Quantum anisotropic Heisenberg chains with superlattice structure: a DMRG study

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we study spin superlattices composed of a repeated pattern of two spin-1/2 XXZ chains with different anisotropy parameters. The magnetization curve can exhibit two plateaus, a non trivial plateau with the magnetization value given by the relative sizes of the sub-chains and another trivial plateau with zero magnetization. We find good agreement of the value and the width of the plateaus with the analytical results obtained previously. In the gapless regions away from the plateaus, we compare the finite-size spin gap with the predictions based on bosonization and find reasonable agreement. These results confirm the validity of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid superlattice description of these systems.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Leg Kondo Ladder

The phase diagram of the two-leg Kondo ladder is investigated using computational techniques. Ferromagnetism is present, but only at small conduction electron densities and robust Kondo coupling $J$. For densities $n\gtrsim0.4$ and any Kondo coupling, a paramagnetic phase is found. We also observed spin dimerization at densities $n$=1/4 and $n$=1/2. The spin structure factor at small $J$ peaks at $\vec{q}$=$(2n,0)π$ for $n\lesssim0.5$, and at $\vec{q}$=$(n,1)π$ for $n\gtrsim0.5$. The charge structure factor suggests that electrons behave as free particles with spin-1/2 (spin-0) for small (large) $J$.

Correlation exponent K_rho of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

We present results for the correlation exponent K_rho of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice as a function of conduction electron density and coupling constant. It is obtained from the first derivative of the Fourier transform of the charge-charge correlation function. We also show that the spin correlation function can only be described in this picture if we include logarithmic corrections, a feature that had been previously overlooked. A consistent description of both charge and spin sectors is then obtained. Finally, we show evidence that the spin sector of the dimerized phase at quarter-filling is gapless.

The spin and charge gaps of the half-filled N-leg Kondo ladders

In this work, we study N-leg Kondo ladders at half-filling through the density matrix renormalization group. We found non-zero spin and charge gaps for any finite number of legs and Kondo coupling $J>0$. We also show evidence of the existence of a quantum critical point in the two dimensional Kondo lattice model, in agreement with previous works. Based on the binding energy of two holes, we did not find evidence of superconductivity in the 2D Kondo lattice model close to half-filling.

Phase Diagram and Critical Behavior of the Spin-1 Baxter-Wu Model with a Crystal Field

The phase diagram and critical behavior of the spin-1 Baxter-Wu model with a crystal field in two dimensions is explored by renormalization group, conventional finite-size scaling and conformal invariance techniques. We found that the phase diagram of this model is qualitatively the same as that of the dilute 4-states Potts model, presenting a multi-critical point for a finite value of the crystal field, in disagreement with previous work based on finite-size calculations. However, our results indicate that the critical exponents vary continuously along the second-order transition line, differently from the expected behavior of the dilute 4-states Potts model.

Dimerization induced by the RKKY interaction

We report the presence of spin dimerization in the ground state of the one dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling. The emergence of this new phase of the Kondo lattice can be traced to the form of the RKKY interaction between the localized moments and provides the first example of dimerization induced indirectly by itinerant electrons. We propose this dimer ordering as the driving mechanism of the spin-Peierls phase observed in the quasi-one-dimensional organic compounds (Per)$_{2}$M(mnt)$_{2}$ (M=Pt, Pd). Moreover, this suggests that a richer phase diagram than the Doniach paradigm may be needed to accommodate the physics of heavy fermion materials.

Small Fermi surface in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

We study the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model through the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our results for the spin correlation function indicate the presence of a small Fermi surface in large portions of the phase diagram, in contrast to some previous studies that used the same technique. We argue that the discrepancy is due to the open boundary conditions, which introduce strong charge perturbations that strongly affect the spin Friedel oscillations.

Qualitative understanding of the sign of t' asymmetry in the extended t-J Model and relevance for pairing properties

Numerical calculations illustrate the effect of the sign of the next nearest-neighbor hopping term t' on the 2-hole properties of the t-t'-J model. Working mainly on 2-leg ladders, in the -1.0 < t'/t < 1.0 regime, it is shown that introducing t' in the t-J model is equivalent to effectively renormalizing J, namely t' negative (positive) is equivalent to an effective t-J model with smaller (bigger) J. This effect is present even at the level of a 2x2 plaquette toy model, and was observed also in calculations on small square clusters. Analyzing the transition probabilities of a hole-pair in the plaquette toy model, it is argued that the coherent propagation of such hole-pair is enhanced by a constructive interference between both t and t' for t'>0. This interference is destructive for t'<0.

Indications of Spin-Charge Separation at Short Distance and Stripe Formation in the Extended t-J Model on Ladders and Planes

The recently discussed tendency of holes to generate nontrivial spin environments in the extended two-dimensional t-J model (G. Martins, R. Eder, and E. Dagotto, Phys. Rev. B{\bf 60}, R3716 (1999)) is here investigated using computational techniques applied to ladders with several number of legs. This tendency is studied also with the help of analytic spin-polaron approaches directly in two dimensions. Our main result is that the presence of robust antiferromagnetic correlations between spins located at both sides of a hole either along the x or y axis, observed before numerically on square clusters, is also found using ladders, as well as applying techniques based on a string-basis expansion. This so-called "across-the-hole" nontrivial structure exists even in the two-leg spin-gapped ladder system, and leads to an effective reduction in dimensionality and spin-charge separation at short-distances, with a concomitant drastic reduction in the quasiparticle (QP) weight Z. In general, it appears that holes tend to induce one-dimensional-like spin arrangements to improve their mobility. Using ladders it is also shown that the very small J/t$\sim$0.1 regime of the standard t-J model may be more realistic than anticipated in previous investigations, since such regime shares several properties with those found in the extended model at realistic couplings. Another goal of the present article is to provide additional information on the recently discussed tendencies to stripe formation and spin incommensurability reported for the extended t-J model.

Doped Stripes in Models for the Cuprates Emerging from the One-hole Properties of the Insulator

The extended and standard t-J models are computationally studied on ladders and planes, with emphasis on the small J/t region. At couplings compatible with photoemission results for undoped cuprates, half-doped stripes separating $π$-shifted antiferromagnetic (AF) domains are found, as in Tranquada's interpretation of neutron experiments. Our main result is that the elementary stripe `"building-block" resembles the properties of $one$ hole at small J/t, with robust AF correlations across-the-hole induced by the local tendency of the charge to separate from the spin (G. Martins {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B{\bf 60}, R3716 (1999)). This suggests that the seed of half-doped stripes already exists in the unusual properties of the insulating parent compound.

The Critical Behaviour of the Spin-3/2 Blume-Capel Model in Two Dimensions

The phase diagram of the spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model in two dimensions is explored by conventional finite-size scaling, conformal invariance and Monte Carlo simulations. The model in its $τ$-continuum Hamiltonian version is also considered and compared with others spin-3/2 quantum chains. Our results indicate that differently from the standard spin-1 Blume-Capel model there is no multicritical point along the order-disorder transition line. This is in qualitative agreement with mean field prediction but in disagreement with previous approximate renormalization group calculations. We also presented new results for the spin-1 Blume-Capel model.

Critical and off-critical studies of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary conditions

The operator content of the Baxter-Wu model with general toroidal boundary conditions is calculated analytically and numerically. These calculations were done by relating the partition function of the model with the generating function of a site-colouring problem in a hexagonal lattice. Extending the original Bethe-ansatz solution of the related colouring problem we are able to calculate the eigenspectra of both models by solving the associated Bethe-ansatz equations. We have also calculated, by exploring the conformal invariance at the critical point, the mass ratios of the underlying massive theory governing the Baxter-Wu model in the vicinity of its critical point.

Conformal invariance studies of the Baxter-Wu model and a related site-colouring problem

The partition function of the Baxter-Wu model is exactly related to the generating function of a site-colouring problem on a hexagonal lattice. We extend the original Bethe ansatz solution of these models in order to obtain the eigenspectra of their transfer matrices in finite geometries and general toroidal boundary conditions. The operator content of these models are studied by solving numerically the Bethe-ansatz equations and by exploring conformal invariance. Since the eigenspectra are calculated for large lattices, the corrections to finite-size scaling are also calculated.

The Critical Behaviour of Potts models with symmetry breaking fields

The $Q$-state Potts model in two dimensions in the presence of external magnetic fields is studied. For general $Q\geq3$ special choices of these magnetic fields produce effective models with smaller $Z(Q')$ symmetry $(Q'< Q)$. The phase diagram of these models and their critical behaviour are explored by conventional finite-size scaling and conformal invariance. The possibility of multicritical behavior, for finite values of the symmetry breaking fields, in the cases where $Q>4$ is also analysed. Our results indicate that for effective models with $Z(Q')$ symmetry $(Q'\leq4)$ the multicritical point occurs at zero field. This last result is also corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations.
