Anderson localization: A view from Krylov space

The Krylov subspace expansion is a workhorse method for sparse numerics that has been increasingly explored as source of physical insight into many-body dynamics in recent years. In this work we revisit the venerable Anderson model of localization in dimensions $d=1, 2, 3, 4$ to construct local integrals of motion (LIOM) in Krylov space. These appear as zero eigenvalue edge states of an effective hopping problem in the Krylov superoperator subspace and can be analytically constructed given the Lanczos coefficients. We exploit this idea, focusing on $d=3$, to study the manifestation of the disorder driven Anderson transition in the anatomy of LIOMs. We find that the increasing complexity of the Krylov operators results in a suppression of the fluctuations of the Lanczos coefficients. As such, one can study the phenomenology of the integrals of motion in the disorder averaged Krylov chain. We find edge states localized on vanishing fraction of Krylov space (of dimension $D_K=V^2$ for cubes of volume $V$), both in localized and extended phases. Importantly, in the localized phase, disorder induces powerlaw decaying dimerization in the (Krylov) hopping problem, producing stretched exponential decay of the LIOMs in Krylov space with a stretching exponent $1/2d$. Metallic LIOMs are completely delocalized albeit across only $\propto \sqrt{D_K}$ states. Critical LIOMs exhibit powerlaw decay with an exponent matching the expected value of $0.29$.

Quantum many-body simulations with PauliStrings.jl

We present the Julia package PauliStrings ( https://github.com/nicolasloizeau/PauliStrings.jl ) for quantum many-body simulations, which performs fast operations on the Pauli group by encoding Pauli strings in binary. All of the Pauli string algebra is encoded into low-level logic operations on integers, and is made efficient by various truncation methods which allow for systematic extrapolation of the results. We illustrate the effectiveness of our package by (i) performing Heisenberg time evolution through direct numerical integration and (ii) by constructing a Liouvillian Krylov space. We benchmark the results against tensor network methods, and we find our package performs favorably. In addition, we show that this representation allows for easy encoding of any geometry. We present results for chaotic and integrable spin systems in 1D as well as some examples in 2D. Currently, the main limitations are the inefficiency of representing non-trivial pure states (or other low-rank operators), as well as the need to introduce dissipation to probe long-time dynamics.

Many-body delocalization from embedded thermal inclusion

We numerically study quantum avalanches in one-dimensional disordered spin systems by attaching two XXZ spin chains. One chain has low disorder representing a rare Griffith's region, or thermal inclusion, and the second has larger disorder, i.e., disorder larger than the observed finite-size crossover. Comparing dynamics of this system to identical systems with uniformly large disorder, we find evidence for exponentially slow thermalization (in disorder) within the many-body localized regime when the rare region is present. We observe a decay of the spin imbalance in the bulk of the large disorder region that persists to long times ($\sim10^{4}$) and find a universal behavior of the spectral function.

Quantum Coherent States of Interacting Bose-Fermi Mixtures in One Dimension

We study two-component atomic gas mixtures in one dimension involving both bosons and fermions. When the inter-species interaction is attractive, we report a rich variety of coherent ground-state phases that vary with the intrinsic and relative strength of the interactions. We avoid any artifacts of lattice discretization by developing a novel implementation of a continuous matrix product state ansatz for mixtures and priorly demonstrate the validity of our approach on the integrable point that exists for mixtures with equal masses and interactions (Lai-Yang model) where we find that the ansatz correctly and systematically converges towards the exact results.
