Quantum-classical correspondence in the wavefunctions of Andreev billiards

We present a classical and quantum mechanical study of an Andreev billiard with a chaotic normal dot. We demonstrate that in general the classical dynamics of these normal-superconductor hybrid systems is mixed, thereby indicating the limitations of a widely used retracing approximation. We show that the mixed classical dynamics gives rise to a wealth of wavefunction phenomena, including periodic orbit scarring and localization of the wavefunction onto other classical phase space objects such as intermittent regions and quantized tori.

Bound states in Andreev billiards with soft walls

The energy spectrum and the eigenstates of a rectangular quantum dot containing soft potential walls in contact with a superconductor are calculated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation. We compare the quantum mechanical solutions with a semiclassical analysis using a Bohr--Sommerfeld (BS) quantization of periodic orbits. We propose a simple extension of the BS approximation which is well suited to describe Andreev billiards with parabolic potential walls. The underlying classical periodic electron-hole orbits are directly identified in terms of ``scar'' like features engraved in the quantum wavefunctions of Andreev states determined here for the first time.

Quantum and semiclassical study of magnetic anti-dots

We study the energy level structure of two-dimensional charged particles in inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In particular, for magnetic anti-dots the magnetic field is zero inside the dot and constant outside. Such a device can be fabricated with present-day technology. We present detailed semiclassical studies of such magnetic anti-dot systems and provide a comparison with exact quantum calculations. In the semiclassical approach we apply the Berry-Tabor formula for the density of states and the Borh-Sommerfeld quantization rules. In both cases we found good agreement with the exact spectrum in the weak magnetic field limit. The energy spectrum for a given missing flux quantum is classified in six possible classes of orbits and summarized in a so-called phase diagram. We also investigate the current flow patterns of different quantum states and show the clear correspondence with classical trajectories.

Andreev bound states for cake shape superconducting-normal systems

The energy spectrum of cake shape normal - superconducting systems is calculated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We take into account the mismatch in the effective masses and Fermi energies of the normal and superconducting regions as well as the potential barrier at the interface. In the case of a perfect interface and without mismatch, the energy levels are treated by semi-classics. Analytical expressions for the density of states and its integral, the step function, are derived and compared with that obtained from exact numerics. We find a very good agreement between the two calculations. It is shown that the spectrum possesses an energy gap and the density of states is singular at the edge of the gap. The effect of the mismatch and the potential barrier on the gap is also investigated.

Non-local current correlations in ferromagnet/superconductor nanojunctions

When two fully polarized ferromagnetic (F) wires with opposite polarizations make contact with a spin-singlet superconductor, a potential-induced current in wire 1 induces a non-local current of equal magnitude and sign in wire 2. The magnitude of this current has been studied in the tunneling limit and found to decay exponentially with the distance between the contact. In this paper we propose a new structure in which this novel non-local effect is increased by orders of magnitude. We study the spin-dependent electronic transport of a diffusive nanojunction and demonstrate that when a normal diffusive region is placed between the F leads and superconductor, the non-local initially increases with the separation between the F leads, achieving a maximum and decays as a power law with increasing separation.

Effective Random Matrix Theory description of chaotic Andreev billiards

An effective random matrix theory description is developed for the universal gap fluctuations and the ensemble averaged density of states of chaotic Andreev billiards for finite Ehrenfest time. It yields a very good agreement with the numerical calculation for Sinai-Andreev billiards. A systematic linear decrease of the mean field gap with increasing Ehrenfest time $τ_E$ is observed but its derivative with respect to $τ_E$ is in between two competing theoretical predictions and close to that of the recent numerical calculations for Andreev map. The exponential tail of the density of states is interpreted semi-classically.

Andreev bound states for superconducting-ferromagnetic box

Within the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) formalism an exact quantization condition for Andreev bound states of the ferromagnetic-superconducting hybrid systems of box geometry is derived and a semi-classical formula for the density of states is obtained. The semi-classical formula is shown to agree with the exact result, even when the exchange field $h$, is much larger than the superconductor order parameter, provided $h$ is small compared with the Fermi energy.

Ring--Shaped Andreev Billiards in Quantizing Magnetic Fields

We present a detailed semiclassical study of a clean disk--shaped insulator--normal-metal--superconductor hybrid system in a magnetic field. It is based on an exact secular equation that we derived within the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) formalism. Results obtained from a classification of electron and hole orbits are in excellent agreement with those from an exact numerical diagonalization of the BdG equation. Our analysis opens up new possibilities for determining thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic hybrid systems.

A logarithmic contribution to the density of states of rectangular Andreev billiards

We demonstrate that the exact quantum mechanical calculations are in good agreement with the semiclassical predictions for rectangular Andreev billiards and therefore for a large number of open channels it is sufficient to investigate the Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation of the density of states. We present exact calculations of the classical path length distribution $P(s)$ which is a non-differentiable function of $s$, but whose integral is a smooth function with logarithmically dependent asymptotic behavior. Consequently, the density of states of rectangular Andreev billiards has two contributions on the scale of the Thouless energy: one which is well-known and it is proportional to the energy, and the other which shows a logarithmic energy dependence. It is shown that the prefactors of both contributions depend on the geometry of the billiards but they have universal limiting values when the width of the superconductor tends to zero.

Excitation spectra for Andreev billiards of Box and Disk geometries

We study Andreev billiards of box and disk geometries by matching the wave functions at the interface of the normal and the superconducting region using the exact solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The mismatch in the Fermi wavenumbers and the effective masses of the normal system and the superconductor, as well as the tunnel barrier at the interface are taken into account. A Weyl formula (for the smooth part of the counting function of the energy levels) is derived. The exact quantum mechanical calculations show equally spaced singularities in the density of states. Based on the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule a semiclassical theory is proposed to understand these singularities. For disk geometries two kinds of states can be distinguished: states either contribute through whispering gallery modes or are Andreev states strongly coupled to the superconductor. Controlled by two relevant material parameters, three kinds of energy spectra exist in disk geometry. The first is dominated by Andreev reflections, the second, by normal reflections in an annular disk geometry. In the third case the coherence length is much larger than the radius of the superconducting region, and the spectrum is identical to that of a full disk geometry.

Proximity-induced sub-gaps in Andreev billiards

We examine the density of states of an Andreev billiard and show that any billiard with a finite upper cut-off in the path length distribution $P(s)$ will possess an energy gap on the scale of the Thouless energy. An exact quantum mechanical calculation for different Andreev billiards gives good agreement with the semi-classical predictions when the energy dependent phase shift for Andreev reflections is properly taken into account. Based on this new semi-classical Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation of the density of states, we derive a simple formula for the energy gap. We show that the energy gap, in units of Thouless energy, may exceed the value predicted earlier from random matrix theory for chaotic billiards.

Spectral Determinant Method for Interacting N-body Systems Including Impurities

A general expression for the Green's function of a system of $N$ particles (bosons/fermions) interacting by contact potentials, including impurities with Dirac-delta type potentials is derived. In one dimension for $N>2$ bosons from our {\it spectral determinant method} the numerically calculated energy levels agree very well with those obtained from the exact Bethe ansatz solutions while they are an order of magnitude more accurate than those found by direct diagonalization. For N=2 bosons the agreement is shown analytically. In the case of N=2 interacting bosons and one impurity, the energy levels are calculated numerically from the spectral determinant of the system. The spectral determinant method is applied to an interacting fermion system including an impurity to calculate the persistent current at the presence of magnetic field.

Scaling behaviour of the transmission poles for Dirac comb

The transmission poles of $N$ number of identical Dirac delta potentials placed periodically in one-dimension are examined in the complex-energy plane. The numerical results show that the imaginary part of the poles scales with 1/N. An approximate form of the poles is derived which supports the scaling behaviour of the poles found numerically. It is shown that the imaginary part of the poles are proportional to their real part for the poles close to the ends of the bands.

Negative length orbits in normal-superconductor billiard systems

The Path-Length Spectra of mesoscopic systems including diffractive scatterers and connected to superconductor is studied theoretically. We show that the spectra differs fundamentally from that of normal systems due to the presence of Andreev reflection. It is shown that negative path-lengths should arise in the spectra as opposed to normal system. To highlight this effect we carried out both quantum mechanical and semiclassical calculations for the simplest possible diffractive scatterer. The most pronounced peaks in the Path-Length Spectra of the reflection amplitude are identified by the routes that the electron and/or hole travels.

Application of the lattice Green's function for calculating the resistance of an infinite networks of resistors

We calculate the resistance between two arbitrary grid points of several infinite lattice structures of resistors by using lattice Green's functions. The resistance for $d$ dimensional hypercubic, rectangular, triangular and honeycomb lattices of resistors is discussed in detail. We give recurrence formulas for the resistance between arbitrary lattice points of the square lattice. For large separation between nodes we calculate the asymptotic form of the resistance for a square lattice and the finite limiting value of the resistance for a simple cubic lattice. We point out the relation between the resistance of the lattice and the van Hove singularity of the tight-binding Hamiltonian. Our Green's function method can be applied in a straightforward manner to other types of lattice structures and can be useful didactically for introducing many concepts used in condensed matter physics.

Analogy between two-dimensional dislocation systems and layered superconductors

We propose a consistent treatment of the applied external stress on a two-dimensional dislocation systems by using the analogy between our model and the layered superconductors. Using the results of a mathematically rigorous, real-space renormalization-group (RG) calculations in the latter model we extend the original model developed by Khantha {\it et al.} From our recursion relations a nonlinear equation is derived for the transition temperature as a function of the applied stress. Our results are compared with the predictions of Khantha's model for three particular materials and the reasons for the deviations are discussed. Possible extensions of our model are outlined.

Conductance in a periodically doped quantum wire

In this paper we will give a short rewiew about the conductance of a mesoscopic waveguide strip with a few impurities. Green-function method is used allowing to treat systems with low number of impurities, not only the completly clean case. Investigating a wire containing Dirac-delta potentials (modelling the impurities) we found that increasing number of impurities can cause a transition of the structure of conductance. The staircase like structure of the clean system vanishes and the conductance of a system containing finite number of impurities located periodically will be determined by the band structure of

Crossover from Regular to Chaotic Behavior in the Conductance of Periodic Quantum Chains

The conductance of a waveguide containing finite number of periodically placed identical point-like impurities is investigated. It has been calculated as a function of both the impurity strength and the number of impurities using the Landauer-Büttiker formula. In the case of few impurities the conductance is proportional to the number of the open channels $N$ of the empty waveguide and shows a regular staircase like behavior with step heights $\approx 2e^2/h$. For large number of impurities the influence of the band structure of the infinite periodic chain can be observed and the conductance is approximately the number of energy bands (smaller than $N$) times the universal constant $2e^2/h$. This lower value is reached exponentially with increasing number of impurities. As the strength of the impurity is increased the system passes from integrable to quantum-chaotic. The conductance, in units of $2e^2/h$, changes from $N$ corresponding to the empty waveguide to $\sim N/2 $ corresponding to chaotic or disordered system. It turnes out, that the conductance can be expressed as $(1-c/2)N$ where the parameter $0<c<1$ measures the chaoticity of the system.
