Propagation studies for the construction of atomic macro-coherence in dense media as a tool to investigate neutrino physics

In this manuscript we review the possibility of inducing large coherence in a macroscopic dense target by using adiabatic techniques. For this purpose we investigate the degradation of the laser pulse through propagation, which was also related to the size of the prepared medium. Our results show that, although adiabatic techniques offer the best alternative in terms of stability against experimental parameters, for very dense media it is necessary to engineer laser-matter interaction in order to minimize laser field degradation. This work has been triggered by the proposal of a new technique, namely Radiative Emission of Neutrino Pairs (RENP), capable of investigating neutrino physics through quantum optics concepts which require the preparation of a macrocoherent state.

Rogue Waves in Ultracold Bosonic Seas

In this work, we numerically consider the initial value problem for nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type models arising in the physics of ultracold boson gases, with generic Gaussian wavepacket initial data. The corresponding Gaussian's width and, wherever relevant also its amplitude, serve as control parameters. First we explore the one-dimensional, standard NLS equation with general power law nonlinearity, in which large amplitude excitations reminiscent of Peregrine solitons or regular solitons appear to form, as the width of the relevant Gaussian is varied. Furthermore, the variation of the nonlinearity exponent aims at a first glimpse of the interplay between rogue or soliton formation and collapse features. The robustness of the main features to noise in the initial data is also confirmed. To better connect our study with the physics of atomic condensates, and explore the role of dimensionality effects, we also consider the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE), as well as the full three-dimensional NLS equation, and examine the degree to which relevant considerations generalize.

A PT-symmetric dual-core system with the sine-Gordon nonlinearity and derivative coupling

We propose a system of sine-Gordon equations, with the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry represented by balanced gain and loss in them. The equations are coupled by sine-field terms and first-order derivatives. The sinusoidal coupling stems from local interaction between adjacent particles in the coupled Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) chains and related sine-lattices, while the cross-derivative coupling, which was not considered before, is induced by \emph{three-particle} interactions, provided that the particles in the parallel FK\ chains move in different directions. Nonlinear wave structures are then studied in this model. In particular, kink-kink (KK) and kink-antikink (KA) complexes are explored by means of analytical and numerical methods. It is predicted analytically and confirmed numerically that the complexes are unstable for one sign of the sinusoidal coupling, and stable for another. Stability regions are delineated in the underlying parameter space. Unstable complexes split into free kinks/antikinks that may propagate or become stationary, depending on whether they are subject to gain or loss, respectively.

Stability of solitary waves and vortices in a 2D nonlinear Dirac model

We explore a prototypical two-dimensional model of the nonlinear Dirac type and examine its solitary wave and vortex solutions. In addition to identifying the stationary states, we provide a systematic spectral stability analysis, illustrating the potential of spinor solutions consisting of a soliton in one component and a vortex in the other to be neutrally stable in a wide parametric interval of frequencies. Solutions of higher vorticity are generically unstable and split into lower charge vortices in a way that preserves the total vorticity. These results pave the way for a systematic stability and dynamics analysis of higher dimensional waveforms in a broad class of nonlinear Dirac models and a comparison revealing nontrivial differences with respect to their better understood non-relativistic analogue, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

$SO(2)$-induced breathing patterns in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates

In this work, we employ the $SO(2)$-rotations of a two-component, one-, two- and three-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger system at and near the Manakov limit, to construct vector solitons and vortex structures. This way, stable stationary dark-bright solitons and their higher-dimensional siblings are transformed into robust oscillatory dark-dark solitons (and generalizations thereof), with and without a harmonic confinement. By analogy to the one-dimensional case, vector higher-dimensional structures take the form of vortex-vortex states in two dimensions and, e.g., vortex ring-vortex ring ones in three dimensions. We consider the effects of unequal (self- and cross-) interaction strengths, where the $SO(2)$ symmetry is only approximately satisfied, showing the dark-dark soliton oscillation is generally robust. Similar features are found in higher dimensions too, although our case examples suggest that phenomena such as phase separation may contribute to the associated dynamics. These results, in connection with the experimental realization of one-dimensional variants of such states in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), suggest the potential observation of the higher-dimensional bound states proposed herein.

PT Meets Supersymmetry and Nonlinearity: An Analytically Tractable Case Example

In the present work, we combine the notion of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry with that of super-symmetry (SUSY) for a prototypical case example with a complex potential that is related by SUSY to the so-called P{ö}schl-Teller potential which is real. Not only are we able to identify and numerically confirm the eigenvalues of the relevant problem, but we also show that the corresponding nonlinear problem, in the presence of an arbitrary power law nonlinearity, has an exact bright soliton solution that can be analytically identified and has intriguing stability properties, such as an oscillatory instability, which the corresponding solution of the regular nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with arbitrary power law nonlinearity does not possess. The spectral properties and dynamical implications of this instability are examined. We believe that these findings may pave the way towards initiating a fruitful interplay between the notions of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry, super-symmetric partner potentials and nonlinear interactions.

PT-Symmetric dimer in a generalized model of coupled nonlinear oscillators

In the present work, we explore the case of a general PT-symmetric dimer in the context of two both linearly and nonlinearly coupled cubic oscillators. To obtain an analytical handle on the system, we first explore the rotating wave approximation converting it into a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger type dimer. In the latter context, the stationary solutions and their stability are identified numerically but also wherever possible analytically. Solutions stemming from both symmetric and anti-symmetric special limits are identified. A number of special cases are explored regarding the ratio of coefficients of nonlinearity between oscillators over the intrinsic one of each oscillator. Finally, the considerations are extended to the original oscillator model, where periodic orbits and their stability are obtained. When the solutions are found to be unstable their dynamics is monitored by means of direct numerical simulations.

PT-symmetric sine-Gordon breathers

In this work, we explore a prototypical example of a genuine continuum breather (i.e., not a standing wave) and the conditions under which it can persist in a $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetric medium. As our model of interest, we will explore the sine-Gordon equation in the presence of a $\mathcal{P T}$- symmetric perturbation. Our main finding is that the breather of the sine-Gordon model will only persist at the interface between gain and loss that $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetry imposes but will not be preserved if centered at the lossy or at the gain side. The latter dynamics is found to be interesting in its own right giving rise to kink-antikink pairs on the gain side and complete decay of the breather on the lossy side. Lastly, the stability of the breathers centered at the interface is studied. As may be anticipated on the basis of their "delicate" existence properties such breathers are found to be destabilized through a Hopf bifurcation in the corresponding Floquet analysis.

Solitary Waves in a Discrete Nonlinear Dirac equation

In the present work, we introduce a discrete formulation of the nonlinear Dirac equation in the form of a discretization of the Gross-Neveu model. The motivation for this discrete model proposal is both computational (near the continuum limit) and theoretical (using the understanding of the anti-continuum limit of vanishing coupling). Numerous unexpected features are identified including a staggered solitary pattern emerging from a single site excitation, as well as two- and three-site excitations playing a role analogous to one- and two-site, respectively, excitations of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger analogue of the model. Stability exchanges between the two- and three-site states are identified, as well as instabilities that appear to be persistent over the coupling strength $ε$, for a subcritical value of the propagation constant $Λ$. Variations of the propagation constant, coupling parameter and nonlinearity exponent are all examined in terms of their existence and stability implications and long dynamical simulations are used to unravel the evolutionary phenomenology of the system (when unstable).

Collective Coordinates Theory for Discrete Soliton Ratchets in the sine-Gordon Model

A collective coordinate theory is develop for soliton ratchets in the damped discrete sine-Gordon model driven by a biharmonic force. An ansatz with two collective coordinates, namely the center and the width of the soliton, is assumed as an approximated solution of the discrete non-linear equation. The evolution of these two collective coordinates, obtained by means of the Generalized Travelling Wave Method, explains the mechanism underlying the soliton ratchet and captures qualitatively all the main features of this phenomenon. The theory accounts for the existence of a non-zero depinning threshold, the non-sinusoidal behaviour of the average velocity as a function of the difference phase between the harmonics of the driver, the non-monotonic dependence of the average velocity on the damping and the existence of non-transporting regimes beyond the depinning threshold. In particular it provides a good description of the intriguing and complex pattern of subspaces corresponding to different dynamical regimes in parameter space.

sine-Gordon Equation: From Discrete to Continuum

In the present Chapter, we consider two prototypical Klein-Gordon models: the integrable sine-Gordon equation and the non-integrable $ϕ^4$ model. We focus, in particular, on two of their prototypical solutions, namely the kink-like heteroclinic connections and the time-periodic, exponentially localized in space breather waveforms. Two limits of the discrete variants of these models are contrasted: on the one side, the analytically tractable original continuum limit, and on the opposite end, the highly discrete, so-called anti-continuum limit of vanishing coupling. Numerical computations are used to bridge these two limits, as regards the existence, stability and dynamical properties of the waves. Finally, a recent variant of this theme is presented in the form of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Klein-Gordon field theories and a number of relevant results are touched upon.
