Nonlinear Excitations, Stability Inversions and Dissipative Dynamics in Quasi-one-dimensional Polariton Condensates

We consider the existence, stability and dynamics of the ground state and nonlinear excitations, in the form of dark solitons, for a quasi-one-dimensional polariton condensate in the presence of pumping and nonlinear damping. We find a series of remarkable features that can be directly contrasted to the case of the typically energy-conserving ultracold alkali-atom Bose-Einstein condensates. For some sizeable parameter ranges, the nodeless ("ground") state becomes {\it unstable} towards the formation of {\em stable} nonlinear single or {\em multi} dark-soliton excitations. It is also observed that for suitable parametric choices, the instability of single dark solitons can nucleate multi-dark-soliton states. Also, for other parametric regions, {\em stable asymmetric} sawtooth-like solutions exist. Finally, we consider the dragging of a defect through the condensate and the interference of two initially separated condensates, both of which are capable of nucleating dark multi-soliton dynamical states.

Josephson tunneling of dark solitons in a double-well potential

We study the dynamics of matter waves in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. We consider in particular the case when one of the double wells confines excited states. Similarly to the known ground state oscillations, the states can tunnel between the wells experiencing the physics known for electrons in a Josephson junction, or be self-trapped. As the existence of dark solitons in a harmonic trap are continuations of such non-ground state excitations, one can view the Josephson-like oscillations as tunnelings of dark solitons. Numerical existence and stability analysis based on the full equation is performed, where it is shown that such tunneling can be stable. Through a numerical path following method, unstable tunneling is also obtained in different parameter regions. A coupled-mode system is derived and compared to the numerical observations. Regions of (in)stability of Josephson tunneling are discussed and highlighted. Finally, we outline an experimental scheme designed to explore such dark soliton dynamics in the laboratory.

Dark-Bright Discrete Solitons: A Numerical Study of Existence, Stability and Dynamics

In the present work, we numerically explore the existence and stability properties of different types of configurations of dark-bright solitons, dark-bright soliton pairs and pairs of dark-bright and dark solitons in discrete settings, starting from the anti-continuum limit. We find that while single discrete dark-bright solitons have similar stability properties to discrete dark solitons, their pairs may only be stable if the bright components are in phase and are always unstable if the bright components are out of phase. Pairs of dark-bright solitons with dark ones have similar stability properties as individual dark or dark-bright ones. Lastly, we consider collisions between dark-bright solitons and between a dark-bright one and a dark one. Especially in the latter and in the regime where the underlying lattice structure matters, we find a wide range of potential dynamical outcomes depending on the initial soliton speed.

Stability of non-time-reversible phonobreathers

Non-time reversible phonobreathers are non-linear waves that can transport energy in coupled oscillator chains by means of a phase-torsion mechanism. In this paper, the stability properties of these structures have been considered. It has been performed an analytical study for low-coupling solutions based upon the so called {\em multibreather stability theorem} previously developed by some of the authors [Physica D {\bf 180} 235]. A numerical analysis confirms the analytical predictions and gives a detailed picture of the existence and stability properties for arbitrary frequency and coupling.

Regular and chaotic transport of discrete solitons in asymmetric potentials

Ratchet dynamics of topological solitons of the forced and damped discrete double sine-Gordon system are studied. Directed transport occurring both in regular and in chaotic regions of the phase space and its dependence on damping, amplitude and frequency of the driving, asymmetry parameter, coupling constant, has been extensively investigated. We show that the passage from ratchet phase-locked regime to chaotic ratchets occurs via a period doubling route to chaos and that, quite surprisingly, pinned states can exist inside phase-locking and chaotic transport regions for intermediate values of the coupling constant. The possibility to control chaotic discrete soliton ratchets by means of both small subharmonic signals and more general periodic drivings, has also been investigated.

Breathers and kinks in a simulated crystal experiment

We develop a simple 1D model for the scattering of an incoming particle hitting the surface of mica crystal, the transmission of energy through the crystal by a localized mode, and the ejection of atom(s) at the incident or distant face. This is the first attempt to model the experiment described in Russell and Eilbeck in 2007 (EPL, v. 78, 10004). Although very basic, the model shows many interesting features, for example a complicated energy dependent transition between breather modes and a kink mode, and multiple ejections at both incoming and distant surfaces. In addition, the effect of a heavier surface layer is modelled, which can lead to internal reflections of breathers or kinks at the crystal surface.

Multibreather and vortex breather stability in Klein--Gordon lattices: Equivalence between two different approaches

In this work, we revisit the question of stability of multibreather configurations, i.e., discrete breathers with multiple excited sites at the anti-continuum limit of uncoupled oscillators. We present two methods that yield quantitative predictions about the Floquet multipliers of the linear stability analysis around such exponentially localized in space, time-periodic orbits, based on the Aubry band method and the MacKay effective Hamiltonian method and prove that their conclusions are equivalent. Subsequently, we showcase the usefulness of the methods by a series of case examples including one-dimensional multi-breathers, and two-dimensional vortex breathers in the case of a lattice of linearly coupled oscillators with the Morse potential and in that of the discrete $ϕ^4$ model.

Interaction of moving discrete breathers with interstitial defects

In this paper, interstitial migration generated by scattering with a mobile breather is investigated numerically in a Frenkel-Kontorova one-dimensional lattice. Consistent with experimental results it is shown that interstitial diffusion is more likely and faster than vacancy diffusion. Our simulations support the hypothesis that a long-range energy transport mechanism involving moving nonlinear vibrational excitations may significantly enhance the mobility of point defects in a crystal lattice.

Solitons in quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with competing dipolar and local interactions

We study families of one-dimensional matter-wave bright solitons supported by the competition of contact and dipole-dipole (DD) interactions of opposite signs. Soliton families are found, and their stability is investigated in the free space, and in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). Free-space solitons may exist with an arbitrarily weak local attraction if the strength of the DD repulsion is fixed. In the case of the DD attraction, solitons do not exist beyond a maximum value of the local-repulsion strength. In the system which includes the OL, a stability region for \textit{subfundamental solitons} (SFSs) is found in the second finite bandgap. For the existence of gap solitons (GSs) under the attractive DD interaction, the contact repulsion must be strong enough. In the opposite case of the DD repulsion, GSs exist if the contact attraction is not too strong. Collisions between solitons in the free space are studied too. In the case of the local attraction, they merge or pass through each other at small and large velocities, respectively. In the presence of the local repulsion, slowly moving solitons bounce from each other.

Lower and upper estimates on the excitation threshold for breathers in DNLS lattices

We propose analytical lower and upper estimates on the excitation threshold for breathers (in the form of spatially localized and time periodic solutions) in DNLS lattices with power nonlinearity. The estimation depending explicitly on the lattice parameters, is derived by a combination of a comparison argument on appropriate lower bounds depending on the frequency of each solution with a simple and justified heuristic argument. The numerical studies verify that the analytical estimates can be of particular usefulness, as a simple analytical detection of the activation energy for breathers in DNLS lattices.

Discrete breathers in a forced-damped array of coupled pendula: Modeling, Computation and Experiment

In this work, we present a mechanical example of an experimental realization of a stability reversal between on-site and inter-site centered localized modes. A corresponding realization of a vanishing of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier allows for an experimentally observed enhanced mobility of the localized modes near the reversal point. These features are supported by detailed numerical computations of the stability and mobility of the discrete breathers in this system of forced and damped coupled pendula. Furthermore, additional exotic features of the relevant model, such as dark breathers are briefly discussed.

Interlaced solitons and vortices in coupled DNLS lattices

In the present work, we propose a new set of coherent structures that arise in nonlinear dynamical lattices with more than one components, namely interlaced solitons. These are waveforms in which in the relevant anti-continuum limit, i.e. when the sites are uncoupled, one component has support where the other component does not. We illustrate systematically how one can combine dynamically stable unary patterns to create ones such for the binary case of two-components. In the one-dimensional setting, we provide also a detailed theoretical analysis of the existence and stability of these waveforms, while in higher dimensions, where such analytical computations are far more involved, we resort to corresponding numerical computations. Lastly, we perform direct numerical simulations to showcase how these structures break up, when exponentially or oscillatorily unstable, to structures with a smaller number of participating sites.

Vortex solutions of the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper, we consider the dynamical evolution of dark vortex states in the two-dimensional defocusing discrete nonlinear Schroedinger model, a model of interest both to atomic physics and to nonlinear optics. We find that in a way reminiscent of their 1d analogs, i.e., of discrete dark solitons, the discrete defocusing vortices become unstable past a critical coupling strength and, in the infinite lattice, they apparently remain unstable up to the continuum limit where they are restabilized. In any infinite lattice, stabilization windows of the structures may be observed. Systematic tools are offered for the continuation of the states both from the continuum and, especially, from the anti-continuum limit. Although the results are mainly geared towards the uniform case, we also consider the effect of harmonic trapping potentials.

Solitons in one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger lattices with a local inhomogeneity

In this paper we analyze the existence, stability, dynamical formation and mobility properties of localized solutions in a one-dimensional system described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a linear point defect. We consider both attractive and repulsive defects in a focusing lattice. Among our main findings are: a) the destabilization of the on--site mode centered at the defect in the repulsive case; b) the disappearance of localized modes in the vicinity of the defect due to saddle-node bifurcations for sufficiently strong defects of either type; c) the decrease of the amplitude formation threshold for attractive and its increase for repulsive defects; and d) the detailed elucidation as a function of initial speed and defect strength of the different regimes (trapping, trapping and reflection, pure reflection and pure transmission) of interaction of a moving localized mode with the defect.

Thresholds for breather solutions on the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity

We consider the question of existence of periodic solutions (called breather solutions or discrete solitons) for the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity. Theoretical and numerical results are proved concerning the existence and nonexistence of periodic solutions by a variational approach and a fixed point argument. In the variational approach we are restricted to DNLS lattices with Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is proved that there exists parameters (frequency or nonlinearity parameters) for which the corresponding minimizers satisfy explicit upper and lower bounds on the power. The numerical studies performed indicate that these bounds behave as thresholds for the existence of periodic solutions. The fixed point method considers the case of infinite lattices. Through this method, the existence of a threshold is proved in the case of saturable nonlinearity and an explicit theoretical estimate which is independent on the dimension is given. The numerical studies, testing the efficiency of the bounds derived by both methods, demonstrate that these thresholds are quite sharp estimates of a threshold value on the power needed for the the existence of a breather solution. This it justified by the consideration of limiting cases with respect to the size of the nonlinearity parameters and nonlinearity exponents.

Two-dimensional discrete solitons in rotating lattices

We introduce a two-dimensional (2D) discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with self-attractive cubic nonlinearity in a rotating reference frame. The model applies to a Bose-Einstein condensate stirred by a rotating strong optical lattice, or light propagation in a twisted bundle of nonlinear fibers. Two species of localized states are constructed: off-axis fundamental solitons (FSs), placed at distance $R$ from the rotation pivot, and on-axis (R=0) vortex solitons (VSs), with vorticities $% S=1$ and 2. At a fixed value of rotation frequency $Ω$, a stability interval for the FSs is found in terms of the lattice coupling constant $C$, $% 0<C<C_{\mathrm{cr}}(R)$, with monotonically decreasing $C_{\mathrm{cr}}(R)$. VSs with S=1 have a stability interval, $\tilde{C}_{\mathrm{cr}%}^{(S=1)}(Ω)<C<C_{\mathrm{cr}}^{(S=1)}(Ω)$, which exists for $% Ω$ below a certain critical value, $Ω_{\mathrm{cr}}^{(S=1)}$. This implies that the VSs with S=1 are \emph{destabilized} in the weak-coupling limit by the rotation. On the contrary, VSs with S=2, that are known to be unstable in the standard DNLS equation, with $Ω=0$, are \emph{stabilized} by the rotation in region $0<C<C_{\mathrm{cr}}^{(S=2)}$%, with $C_{\mathrm{cr}}^{(S=2)}$ growing as a function of $Ω$. Quadrupole and octupole on-axis solitons are considered too, their stability regions being weakly affected by $Ω\neq 0$.

Discrete moving breather collisions in a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators

We study collision processes of moving breathers with the same frequency, traveling with opposite directions within a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators. Two types of collisions have been analyzed: symmetric and non-symmetric, head-on collisions. For low enough frequency the outcome is strongly dependent of the dynamical states of the two colliding breathers just before the collision. For symmetric collisions, several results can be observed: breather generation, with the formation of a trapped breather and two new moving breathers; breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and breather fusion bringing about a trapped breather. For non-symmetric collisions the possible results are: breather generation, with the formation of three new moving breathers; breather fusion, originating a new moving breather; breather trapping with also breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and two new moving breathers traveling as a ligand state. Breather annihilation has never been observed.
