Photometric study of selected cataclysmic variables

We present time-resolved photometry of five relatively poorly-studied cataclysmic variables: V1193 Ori, LQ Peg, LD 317, V795 Her, and MCT 2347-3144. The observations were made using four 1m-class telescopes for a total of more than 250 h of observation and almost 16,000 data points. For LQ Peg WHT spectroscopic data have been analysed as well. The light curves show a wide range of variability on different time scales from minutes to months. We detect for the first time a brightness variation of 0.05 mag in amplitude in V1193 Ori on the same timescale as the orbital period, which we interpret as the result of the irradiation of the secondary. A 20-min quasi-periodic oscillation is also detected. The mean brightness of the system has changed by 0.5 mag on a three-month interval, while the flickering was halved. In LQ Peg a 0.05 mag modulation was revealed with a period of about 3 h. The flickering was much smaller, of the order of 0.025 mag. A possible quasi-periodic oscillation could exist near 30 min. For this object, the WHT spectra are single-peaked and do not show any radial-velocity variations. The data of LD 317 show a decrease in the mean magnitude of the system. No periodic signal was detected but this is certainly attributable to the very large flickering observed: between 0.07 and 0.1 mag. For V795 Her, the 2.8-hour modulation, thought to be a superhump arising from the precession of the disc, is present. We show that this modulation is not stable in terms of periodicity, amplitude, and phase. Finally, for MCT 2347-3144, a clear modulation is seen in a first dataset obtained in October 2002. This modulation is absent in August 2003, when the system was brighter and showed much more flickering.

Observational results for northern and southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars

We report on observational results obtained for 78 objects originally classified as bona-fide or candidate gamma Doradus stars. For the southern objects, we gathered echelle spectra with the CORALIE spectrograph attached to the Euler telescope in 1998-2003 and/or Johnson-Cousins B,V,Ic observations with the MODULAR photometer attached to the 0.5-m SAAO telescope in 1999-2000. For the northern objects, we obtained Geneva U,B,B1,B2,V,V1,G observations with the P7 photometer attached to the 1.2-m MERCATOR telescope in 2001-2004. At least 15 of our objects are binaries, of which 7 are new. For 6 binaries, we determined the orbit for the first time. At least 17 objects show profile variations and at least 12 objects are multiperiodic photometric variables. Our results allow us to upgrade 11 objects to bona-fide gamma Doradus stars and to downgrade 8 objects to constant up to the current detection limits. Mode identification is still ongoing, but so far, only l = 1 and 2 modes have been identified.

A spectroscopic study of southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars. I. Time series analysis

We present results of a spectroscopic study of 37 southern (candidate) gamma Doradus stars based on echelle spectra. The observed spectra were cross-correlated with the standard template spectrum of an F0-type star for an easier detection of binary and intrinsic variations. We identified 15 objects as spectroscopic binaries, including 7 new ones, and another 3 objects are binary suspects. At least 12 objects show composite spectra. We could determine the orbital parameters for 9 binaries, of which 4 turn out to be ellipsoidal variables. For 6 binaries, we estimated the expected time-base of the orbital variations. Clear profile variations are observed for 17 objects, pointing towards stellar pulsation. For 8 of them, we have evidence that the main spectroscopic and photometric periods coincide. Our results, in combination with prior knowledge from the literature, lead to the classification of 10 objects as new bona-fide gamma Doradus stars, 1 object as new bona-fide delta Scuti star, and 8 objects as constant stars. Finally, we determined the projected rotational velocity with two independent methods. The resulting vsini values range from 3 to 135 km/s. For the bona-fide gamma Doradus stars, the majority has vsini below 60 km/s.

Analysis of MERCATOR data Part I: variable B stars

We re-classified 31 variable B stars which were observed more than 50 times in the Geneva photometric system with the P7 photometer attached to the MERCATOR telescope (La Palma) during its first 3 years of scientific observations. HD89688 is a possible beta Cephei/slowly pulsating B star hybrid and the main mode of the COROT target HD180642 shows non-linear effects. The Maia candidates are re-classified as either ellipsoidal variables or spotted stars. Although the mode identification is still ongoing, all the well-identified modes so far have a degree l = 0, 1 or 2.

A Photometric Study of the Light Variations of the Triple System DG Leonis

Multi-site and multi-year differential photometry of the triple star DG Leo reveals a complex frequency spectrum that can be modelled as the combination of at least three Delta Scuti type frequencies in the range 11.5-13 c/d (with semi-amplitudes of 2-7 mmag) and a superimposed slow variability of larger amplitude. The period of the slow variation fits very well with half the orbital period of the inner spectroscopic binary indicating the presence of ellipsoidal variations caused by the tidally deformed components in a close configuration. These findings, together with the results of a recent spectroscopic analysis (showing that the system consists of a pair of mild Am stars and one A-type component of normal solar composition), infer that DG Leo is an extremely interesting asteroseismic target. Identification of which component(s) of this multiple system is (or are) pulsating and determination of the excited pulsation modes will both contribute to a much better understanding of the non-trivial link between multiplicity, chemical composition, rotation, and pulsation in the lower part of the classical Cepheid instability strip.

Time-resolved photometry of cataclysmic variables

We present time-resolved photometry of two cataclysmic variables whose CCD photometric observations were obtained with the 1m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory in October 2002 and August 2003 and with the 1m telescope at Hoher List in Germany. Concerning MCT 2347-3144 we detect for the first time a period of 6.65h. For V1193 Ori the 3.96 h periodicity has for the first time been confirmed through time-resolved photometry.

A gamma Doradus star campaign

We report on the results from a large photometric campaign on thirty five gamma Dor star candidates undertaken at the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Leuven in the framework of the Flanders -- South-Africa grant. An overview of the data, as well as the results of the analysis of the obtained time series are presented, the main conclusion being that nine stars are thought to be multiperiodic gamma Dor stars and eight monoperiodic. We also performed a photometric mode identification for two stars of the sample by comparing the amplitude ratios in the different passbands of the Geneva photometric system. Both stars seem to pulsate in non-radial modes of degree l=1.

CCD Photometry and Astrometry for Visual Double and Multiple Stars of the HIPPARCOS Catalogue - I. Presentation of the large scale project

A description is given of the activities of an international working group created with the aim of obtaining both photometric and astrometric observations of visual double and multiple stars with angular separations in the range of one to fifteen arcseconds, that formed part of the HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue. The scientific aims and realisations of this European network are given. About 50 observational missions have been carried out in both hemispheres according to a pre-defined protocol. We describe the general and specifically designed methods used for the reduction of large amounts of CCD observations of double stars and give an outline of the results already presented and soon expected.
