Magnetic structure of CeRhIn_5 as a function of pressure and temperature

We report magnetic neutron-diffraction and electrical resistivity studies on single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ at pressures up to 2.3 GPa. These experiments show that the staggered moment of Ce and the incommensurate magnetic structure change weakly with applied pressure up to 1.63 GPa, where resistivity, specific heat and NQR measurements confirm the presence of bulk superconductivity. This work places new constraints on an interpretation of the relationship between antiferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity in CeRhIn$_{5}$.

$1/T_1$ in the D-wave superconducting state with coexisting antiferromagnetism

We consider a general D-wave superconducting gap function in the presence of coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-rang order. We find that the D-wave order parameter develops additional nodes without lowering the symmetry of the state due to the interplay of the superconducting and AFM correlations. This AFM correlated D-wave gap has a small gap structure inside the generic D-wave gap. As a result of this additional structure it shows a quite different response to impurities compared to a standard D-wave gap. We calculate the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of this gap in the presence of impurities and discuss the implications for the experiments of some AFM heavy- fermion superconductors and in particular for CeRhIn5.

Anisotropic Colossal Magnetoresistance Effects in Fe_{1-x}Cu_xCr_2S_4

A detailed study of the electronic transport and magnetic properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Cr$_2$S$_4$ ($x \leq 0.5$) on single crystals is presented. The resistivity is investigated for $2 \leq T \leq 300$ K in magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla and under hydrostatic pressure up to 16 kbar. In addition magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were performed. FMR and magnetization data reveal a pronounced magnetic anisotropy, which develops below the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, and increases strongly towards lower temperatures. Increasing the Cu concentration reduces this effect. At temperatures below 35 K the magnetoresistance, $MR = \frac{ρ(0) - ρ(H)}{ρ(0)}$, exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the magnetic field, probably due to an enhanced anisotropy. Applying the field along the hard axis leads to a change of sign and a strong increase of the absolute value of the magnetoresistance. On the other hand the magnetoresistance remains positive down to lower temperatures, exhibiting a smeared out maximum with the magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The results are discussed in the ionic picture using a triple-exchange model for electron hopping as well as a half-metal utilizing a band picture.

Magnetism and superconductivity in Ce_2RhIn_8

We report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity, with T_c=2 K, in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet Ce_2RhIn_8, where superconductivity and magnetic order coexist over an extended pressure interval. A T-linear resistivity in the normal state, accessed by an applied magnetic field, does not appear to derive from the existence of a 2D quantum-critical spin-density wave.

Low Frequency Spin Dynamics in the CeMIn_5 Materials

We measure the spin lattice relaxation of the In(1) nuclei in the CeMIn_5 materials, extract quantitative information about the low energy spin dynamics of the lattice of Ce moments in both CeRhIn_5 and CeCoIn_5, and identify a crossover in the normal state. Above a temperature T* the Ce lattice exhibits "Kondo gas" behavior characterized by local fluctuations of independently screened moments; below T* both systems exhibit a "Kondo liquid" regime in which interactions between the local moments contribute to the spin dynamics. Both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting ground states in these systems emerge from the "Kondo liquid" regime. Our analysis provides strong evidence for quantum criticality in CeCoIn_5.

Superconductivity and Quantum Criticality in CeCoIn_5

Electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 at pressures to 4.2 GPa reveal a strong crossover in transport properties near P^* \approx 1.6 GPa, where T_c is a maximum. The temperature-pressure phase diagram constructed from these data provides a natural connection to cuprate physics, including the possible existence of a pseudogap.

Intersite coupling effects in a Kondo lattice

The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn_5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single impurity Kondo temperature T_K and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T^*. The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T^*. These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlations with a larger energy scale in comparison with the Kondo impurity case.

Neutron scattering study of cyrstal fields in CeRhIn5

Neutron scattering results for the tetragonal compound CeRhIn5 give evidence for two crystal field (CF) excitations at 6.9 and 23.6 meV. The scattering can be fit assuming a set of CF parameters B$^{0}_{2}$ = -1.03 meV, B$^{0}_{4}$ = 0.044 meV and B$^{4}_{4}$ = 0.122 meV. To compare our results to previous work, we calculate the susceptibility and specific heat for this CF scheme, including a molecular field term $λ= $35 mol/emu to account for the Kondo effect. We also include a calculation based on these CF parameters that uses the non-crossing approximation to the Anderson model to estimate the effect of Kondo physics on the susceptibility, specific heat and neutron linewidths.

First order superconducting phase transition in CeCoIn$_5$

We investigated the magnetic field dependence of the superconducting phase transition in heavy fermion CeCoIn_5 (T_c = 2.3 K) using specific heat, magneto-caloric effect, and thermal expansion measurements. The superconducting transition becomes first order when the magnetic field is oriented along the 001 crystallographic direction with a strength greater that 4.7 T, and transition temperature below T_0 ~ 0.31 T_c. The change from second order at lower fields is reflected in strong sharpening of both specific heat and thermal expansion anomalies associated with the phase transition, a strong magnetocaloric effect, and a step-like change in the sample volume. The first order superconducting phase transition in CeCoIn_5 is caused by Pauli limiting in type-II superconductors, and was predicted theoretically in the mid 1960s. We do not see evidence for the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state (predicted by an alternative theory also dating back to mid-60's) in CeCoIn_5 with field H || [001].

The influence of microstructures and crystalline defects on the superconductivity of MgB2

This work studies the influence of microstructures and crystalline defects on the superconductivity of MgB2, with the objective to improve its flux pinning. A MgB2 sample pellet that was hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) was found to have significantly increased critical current density (Jc) at high fields than its un-HIPed counterpart. The HIPed sample had a Jc of 10000 A/cm2 in 50000 Oe (5 T) at 5K. This was 20 times higher than that of the un-HIPed sample, and the same as the best Jc reported by other research groups. Microstructures observed in scanning and transmission electron microscopy indicate that the HIP process eliminated porosity present in the MgB2 pellet resulting in an improved intergrain connectivity. Such improvement in intergrain connectivity was believed to prevent the steep Jc drop with magnetic field H that occurred in the un-HIPed MgB2 pellet at H > 45000 Oe (4.5 T) and T = 5 K. The HIP process was also found to disperse the MgO that existed at the grain boundaries of the un-HIPed MgB2 pellet and to generate more dislocations in the HIPed the pellets. These dispersed MgO particles and dislocations improved flux pinning also at H<45000 Oe. The HIPing process was also found to lower the resistivity at room temperature.

Comparison of the Crystal Structure of the Heavy-Fermion Materials CeCoIn5, CeRhIn5 and CeIrIn5

The crystal structure of the recently discovered heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor CeCoIn5 (Tc = 2.3 K) has been determined by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. It is tetragonal (space group P4/mmm), with lattice parameters a = 4.61292(9) A and c = 7.5513(2) A at ambient conditions. Whereas CeCoIn5 is isostructural with the HF aniferromagnet CeRhIn5 and the HF superconductor CeIrIn5, its cell constants and its only variable positional parameter, zIn2, differ significantly from the corresponding ones of CeRhIn5 and CeIrIn5. As a result, the distortions of the cuboctahedron [CeIn3], which is the key structural unit in all three materials, are different in CeCoIn5 from the ones in CeRhIn5 and CeIrIn5. The compounds CeCoIn5 and CeIrIn5, which contain the most distorted (in one or another way) [CeIn3] cuboctahedra exhibit superconductivity at ambient pressure below 2.3 K and 0.4 K respectively. On the other hand, CeRhIn5, in which [CeIn3] cuboctahedra are the less distorted, and the parent compound of the materials CeTIn5 i.e. the cubic HF CeIn3 are antiferromagnets at ambient pressure with TN = 3.8 K and 10 K correspondingly.

Neutron-diffraction study of field-induced transitions in the heavy-fermion compound Ce2RhIn8

We present neutron diffraction measurements in high magnetic fields (0 to 14.5 T) and at low temperatures (2.5, 2.3, 0.77 and 0.068 K) on single crystals of the tetragonal heavy fermion antiferromagnet Ce2RhIn8. For B//[110] the field dependence of selected magnetic and nuclear reflections reveals that the material undergoes several transitions, the temperature dependence of which suggests a complex B-T phase diagram. We present the detailed evolution of the integrated intensities of selected reflections and discuss the associated field-induced transitions.

Effect of pressure on magnetic structure in heavy fermion CeRhIn5

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the incommensurate antiferromagnetic structure of CeRhIn5 is investigated with neutron diffraction using a He pressure cell. At 3.8 kbar, the staggered magnetic moment is 0.37(4) Bohr magneton per Ce at 1.6 K, which is the same as the ambient-pressure value. The Neel temperature T_N=3.8(1) K is also the same as the ambient-pressure one, although the curve of order parameter has changed by pressure. The incommensurability "delta" of the magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,"delta") has reduced from "delta"=0.297 at ambient pressure to "delta"=0.294(1) at 3.8 kbar.

Magnetic Properties of Heavy Fermion Superconductors CeRhIn5 and Ce2RhIn8

Some recent neutron scattering works on CeRhIn5 and Ce2RhIn8, together with related resistivity and specific heat measurements, are summarized. In spite of its layered crystal structure, CeRhIn5 is shown to be 3-dimensional both magnetically and in transport. We also find that the Fisher-Langer behavior is closely followed in CeRhIn5. This may circumvent the Kondo lattice model and support applying established Fermi-liquid superconductivity theory to heavy fermion superconductors.

Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy in a Single Crystal of CeNiGe2

We report measurements on single crystals of orthorhombic CeNiGe2, which is found to exhibit highly anisotropic magnetic and transport properties. The magnetization ratio M(H//b)/M(H^b) at 2 K is observed to be about 18 at 4 T and the electrical resistivity ratio r//b/r^b is about 70 at room temperature. It is confirmed that CeNiGe2 undergoes two-step antiferromagnetic transition at 4 and 3 K, as reported for polycrystalline samples. The application of magnetic field along the b axis (the easy magnetization axis) stabilizes a ferromagnetic correlation between the Ce ions and enhances the hopping of carriers. This results in large negative magnetoresistance along the b axis.

Response of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ to Pressure: Roles of Dimensionality and Proximity to a Quantum-Critical Point

We report measurements of the pressure-dependent superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and electrical resistivity of the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn$_5$. Pressure moves CeCoIn$_5$ away from its proximity to a quantum-critical point at atmospheric pressure. Experimental results are qualitatively consistent with theoretical predictions for strong-coupled, d-wave superconductivity in an anisotropic 3D superconductor.
