Orbital fluctuations and orbital order below the Jahn-Teller transition in Sr3Cr2O8

We report on the magnetic and phononic excitation spectrum of Sr3Cr2O8 determined by THz and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition, which is detected by specific-heat measurements to occur at T_{JT} = 285 K. We identify the singlet-triplet excitations in the dimerized ground state and estimate the exchange couplings in the system. Moreover, ESR absorptions were observed up to T* = 120 K with a linewidth proportional to exp{-Delta/k_{B}T} and Delta/k_{B} = 388 K indicating a phonon-mediated spin relaxation via the excited orbital state of the Cr $e$ doublet in the orbitally ordered state. In contrast to the expected drastic change of the IR active phonons upon entering the low-symmetry Jahn-Teller distorted phase below T_{JT}, we find an extended regime T*<T<T_{JT} where the IR active phonons change only gradually with decreasing temperature. This regime is associated with strong fluctuations in the orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in agreement with the loss of the ESR signal above T*. Using the measured magnetic and phononic excitation spectrum we model the orbital contribution to the specific heat and find the persistence of strong fluctuations far below T_{JT}.

NMR Study in the Iron-Selenide Rb0.74Fe1.6Se2: Determination of the Superconducting Phase as Iron Vacancy-Free Rb0.3Fe2Se2

77Se and 87Rb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on Rb0.74Fe1.6Se2 reveal clearly distinct spectra originating from a majority antiferromagnetic (AF) and a minority metallic-superconducting (SC) phase. The very narrow NMR line of the SC phase evidences the absence of Fe vacancies and any trace of AF order. The Rb content of the SC phase is deduced from intensity measurements identifying Rb0.3(1)Fe2Se2 as the actual composition of the SC fraction. The resulting estimate of 0:15 electrons/Fe brings this class of superconductors 245 family closer to the other Fe-based superconductor families.

Superconductivity at Tc = 44 K in LixFe2Se2(NH3)y

Following a recent proposal by Burrard-Lucas et al. [unpublished, arXiv: 1203.5046] we intercalated FeSe by Li in liquid ammonia. We report on the synthesis of new LixFe2Se2(NH3)y phases as well as on their magnetic and superconducting properties. We suggest that the superconducting properties of these new hybride materials appear not to be influenced by the presence of electronically-innocent Li(NH2) salt moieties. Indeed, high onset temperatures of 44 K and shielding fractions of almost 80% were only obtained in samples containing exclusively Lix(NH3)y moieties acting simultaneously as electron donors and spacer units. The c-axis of the new intercalated phases is strongly enhanced when compared to the alkali-metal intercalated iron selenides A1-xFe2-ySe2 with A = K, Rb, Cs, Tl with T c = 32 K.

Electron spin resonance in Eu based Fe pnictides

The phase diagrams of EuFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ $(0 \leq x \leq 0.4)$ and EuFe$_2$As$_{2-y}$P$_y$ $(0 \leq y \leq 0.43)$ are investigated by Eu$^{2+}$ electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals. From the temperature dependence of the linewidth $ΔH(T)$ of the exchange narrowed ESR line the spin-density wave (SDW) $(T < T_{\rm SDW})$ and the normal metallic regime $(T > T_{\rm SDW})$ are clearly distinguished. At $T > T_{\rm SDW}$ the isotropic linear increase of the linewidth is driven by the Korringa relaxation which measures the conduction-electron density of states at the Fermi level. For $T < T_{\rm SDW}$ the anisotropy probes the local ligand field, while the coupling to the conduction electrons disappears. With increasing substitution $x$ or $y$ the transition temperature $T_{\rm SDW}$ decreases linearly accompanied by a linear decrease of the Korringa-relaxation rate from 8 Oe/K at $x=y=0$ down to 3 Oe/K at the onset of superconductivity at $x \approx 0.2$ or at $y \approx 0.3$, above which it remains nearly constant. Comparative ESR measurements on single crystals of the Eu diluted SDW compound Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting (SC) Eu$_{0.22}$Sr$_{0.78}$Fe$_{1.72}$Co$_{0.28}$As$_2$ corroborate the leading influence of the ligand field on the Eu$^{2+}$ spin relaxation in the SDW regime as well as the Korringa relaxation in the normal metallic regime. Like in Eu$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ a coherence peak is not detected in the latter compound at $T_{\rm c}=21$ K, which is in agreement with the expected complex anisotropic SC gap structure.

Universal exchange-driven phonon splitting in antiferromagnets

We report a linear dependence of the phonon splitting Δωon the non-dominant exchange coupling constant J_{nd} in the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, NiO, and in the frustrated antiferromagnetic oxide spinels CdCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4. It directly confirms the theoretical prediction of an exchange induced splitting of the zone-centre optical phonon for the monoxides and explains the magnitude and the change of sign of the phonon splitting on changing the sign of the non-dominant exchange also in the frustrated oxide spinels. The experimentally found linear relation \hbarΔω= βJ_{nd} S^2 with slope β= 3.7 describes the splitting for both systems and agrees with the observations in the antiferromagnets KCoF3 and KNiF3 with perovskite structure and negligible next-nearest neighbour coupling. The common behavior found for very different classes of cubic antiferromagnets suggests a universal dependence of the exchange-induced phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic transition on the non-dominant exchange coupling.

Wüstite: Electric, thermodynamic and optical properties of FeO

We report on a systematic optical investigation of wüstite. In addition, the sample under consideration, Fe0.93O, has been characterized in detail by electrical transport, dielectric, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. From infrared reflectivity experiments, phonon properties, Drude-like conductivity contributions and electronic transitions have been systematically investigated. The phonon modes reveal a clear splitting below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, similar to observations in other transition-metal monoxides and in spinel compounds which have been explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect. The electronic transitions can best be described assuming a crystal-field parameter Dq = 750 cm-1 and a spin-orbit coupling constant λ= 95 cm-1. A well defined crystal field excitation at low temperatures reveals significant broadening on increasing temperature with an overall transfer of optical weight into dc conductivity contributions. This fact seems to indicate a melting of the on-site excitation into a Drude behavior of delocalized charge carriers. The optical band gap in wüstite is close to 1.0 eV at room temperature. With decreasing temperatures and passing the magnetic phase transition we have detected a strong blue shift of the correlation-induced band edge, which amounts more than 15% and has been rarely observed in antiferromagnets.

Reciprocal-space structure and dispersion of the magnetic resonant mode in the superconducting phase of Rb(x)Fe(2-y)Se2 single crystals

Inelastic neutron scattering is employed to study the reciprocal-space structure and dispersion of magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of single-crystalline Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2. We show that the recently discovered magnetic resonant mode in this compound has a quasi-two-dimensional character, similar to overdoped iron-pnictide superconductors. Moreover, it has a rich in-plane structure that is dominated by four elliptical peaks, symmetrically surrounding the Brillouin zone corner, without sqrt(5) x sqrt(5) reconstruction. We also present evidence for the dispersion of the resonance peak, as its position in momentum space depends on energy. Comparison of our findings with the results of band structure calculations provides strong support for the itinerant origin of the observed signal. It can be traced back to the nesting of electron-like Fermi pockets in the doped metallic phase of the sample in the absence of iron-vacancy ordering.

Magnetization and specific heat of the dimer system CuTe2O5

We report on magnetization and specific heat measurements on single-crystalline CuTe2O5. The experimental data are directly compared to theoretical results for two different spin structures, namely an alternating spin-chain and a two-dimensional (2D) coupled dimer model, obtained by Das et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 224437 (2008)]. While the analysis of the specific heat does not allow to distinguish between the two models, the magnetization data is in good agreement with the 2D coupled dimer model.

Singlet-triplet excitations and high-field magnetization in CuTe2O5

By measuring the THz electron spin resonance (ESR) transmission spectra and high-field magnetization on the spin-gapped system CuTe$_2$O$_5$, we identified the singlet-triplet excitations in the dimerized non-magnetic ground state. The determined spin-gap value of $hν_0=4.94$ meV at the $Γ$ point ($\mathbf{Q}\simeq\mathbf{0}$) is significantly smaller than the strongest antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Cu ions predicted by theoretical investigations. We also observed the critical field $H_{c1}^{a^*}=37.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\bot$ \emph{bc}-plane and $H_{c1}^{bc}=40.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\|$ \emph{bc}-plane at the onset of non-zero magnetization, consistent with the gap value and corresponding anisotropic \emph{g}-factors determined previously. The observed singlet-triplet excitations in Faraday and Voigt configurations suggest a mixing of the singlet state with the $S_z=0$ triplet state and the $S_z=\pm 1$ triplet states, respectively, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the crystalline \emph{bc}-plane.

Alternating spin-orbital order in tetragonal Sr2VO4

Considering spin-orbit coupling, the tetragonal crystal-field, and all relevant superexchange processes including quantum interference, we derive expressions for the energy levels of the vanadium ions in tetragonal Sr2VO4. The used parameters of the model Hamiltonian allow to describe well the excitation spectra observed in neutron scattering and optical experiments at low temperatures. The free energy exhibits a minimum which corresponds to a novel alternating spin-orbital order with strong thermal fluctuation of the orbital mixing parameter.

Anisotropic magnetism, superconductivity, and the phase diagram of Rb(1-x)Fe(2-y)Se2

We report the crystal growth and structural, magnetic, conductivity, and specific heat investigations of Rb(1-x)Fe(2-y)Se2 single crystals with varying stoichiometry prepared by self-flux and Bridgman methods. The system exhibits a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic behavior below 400 K. For 1.53 <2-y< 1.6 superconductivity is found, whereas for Fe concentrations 2-y< 1.5 and 2-y> 1.6 insulating and semiconducting behavior is observed, respectively. The sharpest transition to the superconducting state and the highest transition temperature T_c of 32.4 K is found for compositions close to Rb2Fe4Se5. A critical current density j_c of 1.6*10^4 A/cm^2 (at 2 K) is obtained in the superconducting samples with the highest diamagnetic response. In these samples additional intense x-ray reflexes appear, which are incompatible with the tetragonal symmetry. Upper critical fields H_{c2} of ~250 kOe for the in-plane and 630 kOe for the inter-plane configurations are estimated from resistivity in magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis, respectively. In the non-superconducting samples with the Fe concentration below 1.45 both specific heat and susceptibility revealed an anomaly at 220 K which is not related to antiferromagnetic or structural transformations. Comparison with the magnetic behavior of non-superconducting samples provides evidence for the coexistence of superconductivity and static antiferromagnetic order.

Optical study of phonons and electronic excitations in tetragonal Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We report on the optical excitation spectra in Sr$_2$VO$_4$. The phonon modes are assigned and their evolution with temperature is discussed in the frame of the different phase transitions crossed upon cooling. Besides the expected infrared-active phonons we observe two additional excitations at about 290 cm$^{-1}$ and 840 cm$^{-1}$ which could correspond to electronic transitions of the V$^{4+}$ ions. Our experimental results are discussed in the context of recent experimental and theoretical studies of this material with a unique spin-orbital ground state.

Magnetic Resonant Mode in the Low-Energy Spin-Excitation Spectrum of Superconducting Rb2Fe4Se5 Single Crystals

We have studied the low-energy spin-excitation spectrum of the single-crystalline Rb2Fe4Se5 superconductor (Tc = 32 K) by means of inelastic neutron scattering. In the superconducting state, we observe a magnetic resonant mode centered at an energy of 14 meV and at the (0.5 0.25 0.5) wave vector (unfolded Fe-sublattice notation), which differs from the ones characterizing magnetic resonant modes in other iron-based superconductors. Our finding suggests that the 245-iron-selenides are unconventional superconductors with a sign-changing order parameter, in which bulk superconductivity coexists with the sqrt(5) x sqrt(5) magnetic superstructure. The estimated ratios of the resonance energy to Tc and the superconducting gap indicate moderate pairing strength in this compound, similar to that in optimally doped 1111- and 122-pnictides.

Light-matter interaction in antiferromagnets: the exchange-induced magnetic dipole mechanism

We propose a novel mechanism for exchange-induced exciton-magnon absorptions via hopping between two antiferromagnetically coupled sites and a simultaneous magnetic dipole transition to an excited orbital state. The obtained selection rules correspond to ones for magnetic dipole transitions and are in agreement with the exciton-magnon transitions observed in the quasi one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The calculated magnon density of states in combination with a structure dependent factor identifies the observed optical magnon sideband to originate from transverse magnon modes.

Optical conductivity of superconducting Rb2Fe4Se5

We report the complex dielectric function of high-quality nearly-stoichiometric Rb2Fe4Se5 (RFS) single crystals with Tc=32 K determined by wide-band spectroscopic ellipsometry and time-domain transmission spectroscopy in the spectral range 1 meV<=$\hbar$ω<=6.5 eV at temperatures 4 K<=T<=300 K. This compound simultaneously displays a superconducting and a semiconducting optical response. It reveals a direct band-gap of 0.45 eV determined by a set of spin-controlled interband transitions. Below 100 K we observe in the lowest THz spectral range a clear metallic response characterized by the negative dielectric permittivity ε1 and bare (unscreened) ωpl=100 meV. At the superconducting transition this metallic response exhibits a signature of a superconducting gap below 8 meV. Our findings suggest a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in this compound as two separate phases.

Phase separation in superconducting and antiferromagnetic Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2 probed by Mössbauer spectroscopy

57Fe-Mössbauer studies of superconducting Rb0.8Fe1.6Se2.0 with TC = 32.4 K were performed on single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples in the temperature range 4.2 K to 295 K. They reveal the presence of 88% magnetic and 12% non-magnetic Fe2+ species with the same polarization dependence of their hyperfine spectra. The magnetic species are attributed to the 16i sites of the \surd5 x \surd5 x 1 superstructure, and non-magnetic species to a nano-sized phase postulated from recent studies of superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 systems. The 57Fe-spectrum of a single-crystalline sample in an external field of 50 kOe applied parallel to the crystallographic c-axis confirms the antiferromagnetic order between fourfold ferromagnetic Fe(16i) supermoments. The results are discussed with respect to the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism as well as nano-scale phase separation in AxFe2-ySe2 systems.

Magneto-structural transitions in a frustrated magnet at high fields

Ultrasound and magnetization studies of bond-frustrated ZnCr2S4 spinel are performed in static magnetic fields up to 18 T and in pulsed fields up to 62 T. At temperatures below the antiferromagnetic transition at T_N1 14 K the sound velocity as function of magnetic field reveals a sequence of steps followed by plateaus indicating a succession of crystallographic structures with constant stiffness. At the same time, the magnetization evolves continuously with field up to full magnetic polarization without any plateaus in contrast to geometrically frustrated chromium oxide spinels. The observed high-field magneto-structural states are discussed within a H-T phase diagram taking into account the field and temperature evolution of three coexisting spin structures and subsequent lattice transformations induced by magnetic field.

Anomalous optical phonons in FeTe pnictides: spin state, magnetic order, and lattice anharmonicity

Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of non-superconducting, single-crystalline FeTe are investigated as function of temperature. We have found a relation between the magnitude of ordered magnetic moments and the linewidth of A1g phonons at low temperatures. This relation is attributed to the intermediate spin state (S=1) and the orbital degeneracy of the Fe ions. Spin-phonon coupling constants have been estimated based on microscopic modeling using density-functional theory and analysis of the local spin density. Our observations show the importance of orbital degrees of freedom for the Fe-based superconductors with large ordered magnetic moments, while small magnetic moment of Fe ions in some iron pnictides reflects the low spin state of Fe ions in those systems.
