Time variations in the deep underground muon flux

More than 35 million high-energy muons collected with the MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory have been used to search for flux variations of different nature. Two kinds of studies were carried out: a search for the occurrence of clusters of events and a search for periodic variations. Different analysis methods, including the Scan Statistics test and the Lomb-Scargle spectral analysis have been applied to the data.

Response Uniformity of the ATLAS Liquid Argon Electromagnetic Calorimeter

The construction of the ATLAS electromagnetic liquid argon calorimeter modules is completed and all the modules are assembled and inserted in the cryostats. During the production period four barrel and three endcap modules were exposed to test beams in order to assess their performance, ascertain the production quality and reproducibility, and to scrutinize the complete energy reconstruction chain from the readout and calibration electronics to the signal and energy reconstruction. It was also possible to check the full Monte Carlo simulation of the calorimeter. The analysis of the uniformity, resolution and extraction of constant term is presented. Typical non-uniformities of 0.5% and typical global constant terms of 0.6% are measured for the barrel and end-cap modules.

Time correlations of high energy muons in an underground detector

We present the result of a search for correlations in the arrival times of high energy muons collected from 1995 till 2000 with the streamer tube system of the complete MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Lab. Large samples of single muons (8.6 million), double muons (0.46 million) and multiple muons with multiplicities from 3 to 6 (0.08 million) were selected. These samples were used to search for time correlations of cosmic ray particles coming from the whole upper hemisphere or from selected space cones. The results of our analyses confirm with high statistics a random arrival time distribution of high energy cosmic rays.

Magnetic monopoles, nuclearites, Q-balls: a qualitative picture

We present qualitative pictures of the structures of magnetic monopoles (MMs), nuclearites (nuggets of strange quark matter, strangelets, surrounded by electrons) and Q-balls (supersymmetric states of squarks, sleptons and Higgs fields). In particular we discuss the relation between their mass and size. MMs, nuclearites and Q-balls could be part of the cold Dark Matter (DM); we consider astrophysical limits on the flux of these particles in the cosmic radiation.

Energy Losses of Q-balls

After a short review of Q-balls properties, in this paper we discuss their interaction with matter, and their energy losses in the earth, for a large range of velocities. These calculations are used to compute the fractional angular acceptance of a detector located at Gran Sasso Laboratory. Furthermore we computed the light yield in liquid scintillators, the ionization in streamer tubes and the Restricted Energy Loss in the CR39 nuclear track detector.

On the Resonant Spin Flavor Precession of the Neutrino in the Sun

This work deals with the possible solution of the solar neutrino problem in the framework of the resonant neutrino spin-flavor precession scenario. The event rate results from the solar neutrino experiments as well as the recoil electron energy spectrum from SuperKamiokande are used to constrain the free parameters of the neutrino in this model. We consider two kinds of magnetic profiles inside the sun. For both cases, a static and a twisting field are discussed.
