Particle Rapidity Density Saturation in Heavy Ion Collisions and the Dual String Model

We show that the Dual String Model with fusion leads, in heavy ion collisions, to strict saturation of the particle (pseudo-)rapidity density, normalised to the number of participant nucleons, as that number increases. Asymptotically, as the centre-of-mass energy goes to infinity with the number of participants fixed, this density approaches the nucleon-nucleon density. A comparison with recent WA98 data is presented.

Particle Densities in Heavy Ion Collisions at High Energy and the Dual String Model

We analyse recent results on charged particle pseudo-rapidity densities from RHIC in the framework of the Dual String Model, in particular when including string fusion. The model, in a simple way, agrees with all the existing data and is consistent with the presence of the percolation transition to the Quark-Gluon Plasma already at the CERN-SPS.

Cumulative particle production as a rare event

The generalization of the Glauber formula for cumulative production events is derived. On its basis the multiplicity distribution in such events is related to the one in the minimum bias events. As compared to the rare events of type $C$, the formula involves a shift in the arguments determined by the multiplicity from a collision with a cluster of several nucleons.

Leading nucleon and the proton-nucleus inelasticity

We present in this paper a calculation of the average proton-nucleus inelasticity. Using an Iterative Leading Particle Model and the Glauber model, we relate the leading particle distribution in nucleon-nucleus interactions with the respective one in nucleon- proton collisions. To describe the leading particle distribution in nucleon-proton collisions, we use the Regge Mueller formalism. Contribution to 26th ICRC - Salt Lake City, Utah. August, 1999. HE 1.1.14

Leading nucleon and the hadronic flux in the atmosphere

We present in this paper a calculation of the hadronic flux in the atmosphere. Using an iterative leading particle model and the Glauber model, we relate the moment of the leading particle distribution in nucleon-air collisions with the respective one in nucleon-proton collisions. In this way, we obtain a description of the nucleonic and hadronic fluxes in the atmosphere. Contribution to the 26th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Salt Lake City - Utah, August 1999 (HE 1.2.20).

Percolation approach to phase transitions in high energy nuclear collisions

We study continuum percolation in nuclear collisions for the realistic case in which the nuclear matter distribution is not uniform over the collision volume, and show that the percolation threshold is increased compared to the standard, uniform situation. In terms of quark-gluon plasma formation this means that the phase transition threshold is pushed to higher energies.

Asymmetries in Heavy Meson Production from Light Quark Fragmentation

We discuss the possibility of the asymmetry in $D^-/D^+$ production, from $π^-$ beams, being a direct consequence of the properties of the light quark fragmentation function into heavy mesons. The main features of the asymmetry, as a function of $x_F$, are easily described. An integrated sum-rule for the $D^-, D^+$ difference, is presented. Predictions for the asymmetry, in $B$ meson production, are given.

Absorption and J/psi Suppression in Heavy Ion Collisions

We discuss the J/psi suppression in the framework of multiple collision models. From the analysis of the Pb-Pb NA50 data we conclude that the strength of the absorption has increased, but we find no clear evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma.

Production Associated to Rare Events in High Energy Hadron-Hadron Collisions

At very high energy the same universal relation between the multiparticle or the transverse energy distribution associated to a rare event $C$, $P_C$ and the corresponding minimum bias distribution P, $P_C(ν)\equiv ν/<ν> P(ν)$, $ν\equiv n$ or $E_T$ works for nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as for hadron-hadron collisions. This suggests that asymptotically, all hadronic processes are similar.

Moment Analysis, Multiplicity Distributions and Correlations in High Energy Processes: Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

Cumulant oscillations, or $H_q$ moment oscillations, appear if the KNO multiparticle distribution decreases at large z, $z\equiv n/ $, faster than the exponential, $exp(-D z^μ)$, with $μ> 1$. In nucleus-nucleus interactions this behaviour is related to the limitation in the average number of elementary central collisions (or average number of strings centrally produced), due to the finite number of nucleons involved. Colour deconfinement, via percolating string fusion, will drastically decrease the fraction of centrally produced strings and increase the cut-off parameter $μ$: Moment oscillations will be displaced to smaller q and the width of the KNO distribution and forward-backward particle correlations will become smaller.

Multiplicity and Transverse Energy Distributions Associated to Rare Events in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

We show that in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions the transverse energy or multiplicity distribution P_C, associated to the production of a rare, unabsorbed event C, is universally related to the standard or minimum bias distribution P by the equation $P_C(ν)={ν\over<ν>}P(ν)$, with $\sum P(ν)=1$ and $ν\equiv E_T$ or n. Deviations from this formula are discussed, in particular having in view the formation of the plasma of quarks and gluons. This possibility can be distinguished from absortion or interaction of comovers, looking at the curvature of the $J/Ψ$ over Drell-Yan pairs as a function of E_T.
