Phi decay: a relevant source for K- production at SIS energies?

We present phase space distributions and multiplicities of K+, K- and phi mesons produced in Ar+KCl reactions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.756 AGeV and measured with the HADES spectrometer. The inverse slope parameters and yields of kaons supplement the systematics of previous measurements. The percentage of K- mesons coming fromphi decay is found to be 18+- 7%.

A new upper bound for 3-SAT

We show that a randomly chosen 3-CNF formula over n variables with clauses-to-variables ratio at least 4.4898 is, as n grows large, asymptotically almost surely unsatisfiable. The previous best such bound, due to Dubois in 1999, was 4.506. The first such bound, independently discovered by many groups of researchers since 1983, was 5.19. Several decreasing values between 5.19 and 4.506 were published in the years between. The probabilistic techniques we use for the proof are, we believe, of independent interest.

Study of dielectron production in C+C collisions at 1 AGeV

The emission of e+e- pairs from C+C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities, spanning from the pi0-Dalitz to the rho/omega! invariant-mass region, display a strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion production, rather than like eta production. The data are in good agreement with results obtained in the former DLS experiment.

Identification of photon-tagged jets in the ALICE experiment

The ALICE experiment at LHC will detect and identify prompt photons and light neutral-mesons with the PHOS detector and the additional EMCal electromagnetic calorimeter. Charged particles will be detected and identified by the central tracking system. In this article, the possibility of studying the interaction of jets with the nuclear medium, using prompt photons as a tool to tag jets, is investigated by simulations. New methods to identify prompt photon-jet events and to distinguish them from the jet-jet background are presented.

Sharp threshold for hamiltonicity of random geometric graphs

We show for an arbitrary $\ell_p$ norm that the property that a random geometric graph $\mathcal G(n,r)$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle exhibits a sharp threshold at $r=r(n)=\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{α_p n}}$, where $α_p$ is the area of the unit disk in the $\ell_p$ norm. The proof is constructive and yields a linear time algorithm for finding a Hamiltonian cycle of $\RG$ a.a.s., provided $r=r(n)\ge\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{(α_p -ε)n}}$ for some fixed $ε> 0$.

Constraints on the time-scale of nuclear breakup from thermal hard-photon emission

Measured hard photon multiplicities from second-chance nucleon-nucleon collisions are used in combination with a kinetic thermal model, to estimate the break-up times of excited nuclear systems produced in nucleus-nucleus reactions at intermediate energies. The obtained nuclear break-up time for the $^{129}${Xe} + $^{nat}${Sn} reaction at 50{\it A} MeV is $Δ$$τ$ $\approx$ 100 -- 300 fm/$c$ for all reaction centralities. The lifetime of the radiating sources produced in seven other different heavy-ion reactions studied by the TAPS experiment are consistent with $Δ$$τ$ $\approx$ 100 fm/$c$, such relatively long thermal photon emission times do not support the interpretation of nuclear breakup as due to a fast spinodal process for the heavy nuclear systems studied.

Suppression of soft nuclear bremsstrahlung in proton-nucleus collisions

Photon energy spectra up to the kinematic limit have been measured in 190 MeV proton reactions with light and heavy nuclei to investigate the influence of the multiple-scattering process on the photon production. Relative to the predictions of models based on a quasi-free production mechanism a strong suppression of bremsstrahlung is observed in the low-energy region of the photon spectrum. We attribute this effect to the interference of photon amplitudes due to multiple scattering of nucleons in the nuclear medium.

Photon production in heavy-ion collisions close to the pion threshold

We report on a measurement of hard photons (Eg>30 MeV) in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV at an energy in which photons from the decay of pi0 mesons are dominating. Simultaneous measurement with the TAPS spectrometer of the photon spectrum and photon-photon coincidences used for the identification of pi0 enabled the subtraction of pi0 contribution. The resulting photon spectrum exhibits an exponential shape with an inverse slope of E0=(53+-0.03(stat)-5+8(syst)) MeV. The photon multiplicity, equal to (1.21+-0.03(stat)+0.3-0.2(syst))10E0-2, is roughly one order of magnitude larger than the value extrapolated from existing systematics. This enhancement of the hard photon production is attributed to a strong increase in the contribution of secondary np collisions to the total photon yield. We conclude that, on average, the number of np collisions which contribute to the hard photon production is 7 times larger than the number of first chance np collisions in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV.

Elliptic flow of $η$ and $π^{0}$ Mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2 AGeV

Azimuthal distributions of $η$ and $π^{0}$ mesons emitted at midrapidity in collisions of 1.9 AGeV $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and 2 AGeV $^{40}$Ca+$^{nat}$Ca are studied as a function of the number of projectile-like spectator nucleons. The observed anisotropy corresponds to a negative elliptic flow signal for $η$ mesons, indicating a preferred emission perpendicular to the reaction plane. In contrast, only small azimuthal anisotropies are observed for $π^{0}$ mesons. This may indicate that $η$ mesons freeze out earlier from the fire ball than pions.

Azimuthal Anisotropy of $η$ and $π^{0}$ Mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2 AGeV

The effect is smallest in peripheral Ni+Ni collisions. In contrast, for $π^{0}$ mesons, elliptic flow is observed only in peripheral Ni+Ni collisions, changing from positive to negative sign with increasing pion transverse momentum.
