Axially Deformed Solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov Equations using The Transformed Harmonic Oscillator Basis. The program HFBTHO (v1.66p)

We describe the program HFBTHO for axially deformed configurational Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with Skyrme-forces and zero-range pairing interaction using Harmonic-Oscillator and/or Transformed Harmonic-Oscillator states. The particle-number symmetry is approximately restored using the Lipkin-Nogami prescription, followed by an exact particle number projection after the variation. The program can be used in a variety of applications, including systematic studies of wide ranges of nuclei, both spherical and axially deformed, extending all the way out to nucleon drip lines.

Skyrme-HFB deformed nuclear mass table

The Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov code HFBTHO using the axial (2D) Transformed Harmonic Oscillator basis is tested against the HFODD (3D Cartesian HO basis) and HFBRAD (radial coordinate) codes. Results of large-scale ground-state calculations are presented for the SLy4 and SkP interactions.

Probing the densities of the Sn isotopes

Proton and neutron densities have been obtained for the even-even isotopes of Sn from $^{100}$Sn to $^{176}$Sn using a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model with a Skyrme interaction. The matter densities so defined have been used with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions in a folding model to specify optical potentials for the elastic scattering of protons with energies in the range 40 to 200 MeV. Those potentials have been used to make predictions of the differential cross sections and spin observables for proton scattering. As the target mass increases, the emergence of the neutron skin in the Sn isotopes is revealed by marked effects in the differential cross section. Comparisons with available data show how similar scattering data for the neutron-rich isotopes may provide constraints for the model structures.

Structure of Exotic Nuclei

The progress in the modeling of exotic nuclei with an extreme neutron-to-proton ratio is discussed. Two topics are emphasized: (i) the quest for the universal microscopic nuclear energy density functional and (ii) the progress in the continuum shell model.

Solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov equations in the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. (IV) HFODD (v2.07f): a new version of the program

We describe the new version (v2.07f) of the code HFODD which solves the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock or Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov problem by using the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. In the new version, all symmetries can be broken, which allows for calculations with angular frequency and angular momentum tilted with respect to the mass distribution. The new version contains an interface to the LAPACK subroutine ZHPEVX.

Local Density Approximation for proton-neutron pairing correlations. I. Formalism

In the present study we generalize the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory formulated in the coordinate space to the case which incorporates an arbitrary mixing between protons and neutrons in the particle-hole (p-h) and particle-particle (p-p or pairing) channels. We define the HFB density matrices, discuss their spin-isospin structure, and construct the most general energy density functional that is quadratic in local densities. The consequences of the local gauge invariance are discussed and the particular case of the Skyrme energy density functional is studied. By varying the total energy with respect to the density matrices the self-consistent one-body HFB Hamiltonian is obtained and the structure of the resulting mean fields is shown. The consequences of the time-reversal symmetry, charge invariance, and proton-neutron symmetry are summarized. The complete list of expressions required to calculate total energy is presented.

Systematic study of deformed nuclei at the drip lines and beyond

An improved prescription for choosing a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) basis for use in configuration-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations is presented. The new HFB+THO framework that follows accurately reproduces the results of coordinate-space HFB calculations for spherical nuclei, including those that are weakly bound. Furthermore, it is fully automated, facilitating its use in systematic investigations of large sets of nuclei throughout the periodic table. As a first application, we have carried out calculations using the Skyrme Force SLy4 and volume pairing, with exact particle number projection following application of the Lipkin-Nogami prescription. Calculations were performed for all even-even nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line having proton numbers Z=2,4,...,108 and neutron numbers N=2,4,...,188. We focus on nuclei near the neutron drip line and find that there exist numerous particle-bound even-even nuclei (i.e., nuclei with negative Fermi energies) that have at the same time negative two-neutron separation energies. This phenomenon, which was earlier noted for light nuclei, is attributed to bound shape isomers beyond the drip line.

Time-Reversal Violating Schiff Moment of 225Ra

We use the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method, allowing all symmetries to be broken, to calculate the time-reversal-violating nuclear Schiff moment (which induces atomic electric dipole moments) in the octupole-deformed nucleus 225Ra. Our calculation includes several effects neglected in earlier work, including self consistency and polarization of the core by the last nucleon. We confirm that the Schiff moment is large compared to those of reflection-symmetric nuclei, though ours is generally a few times smaller than recent estimates.

Interactions, symmetry breaking, and effective fields from quarks to nuclei. (A primer in nuclear theory)

An introduction to nuclear theory is given starting from the quantum chromodynamics foundations for quark and gluon fields, then discussing properties of pions and nucleons, interactions between nucleons, structure of the deuteron and light nuclei, and finishing at the description of heavy nuclei. It is shown how concepts of different energy and size scales and ideas related to effective fields and symmetry breaking, enter our description of nuclear systems.

Critical frequency in nuclear chiral rotation

Within the cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach the self-consistent solutions have been obtained for planar and chiral rotational bands in 132La. It turns out that the chiral band cannot exist below some critical rotational frequency which in the present case equals omega=0.6MeV. The appearance of the critical frequency is explained in terms of a simple classical model of two gyroscopes coupled to a triaxial rigid body.

The T=0 neutron-proton pairing correlations in the superdeformed rotational bands around 60Zn

The superdeformed bands in 58Cu, 59Cu, 60Zn, and 61Zn are analyzed within the frameworks of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock as well as Strutinsky-Woods-Saxon total routhian surface methods with and without the T=1 pairing correlations. It is shown that a consistent description within these standard approaches cannot be achieved. A T=0 neutron-proton pairing configuration mixing of signature-separated bands in 60Zn is suggested as a possible solution to the problem.

Nuclear ground-state properties from mean-field calculations

The volume and surface effects in the nuclear local energy density and the volume and surface components of the pairing interaction are discussed in the context of the mean-field, Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov description of atomic nuclei. Predictions of properties of exotic nuclei close to the particle drip lines are presented.

Gamow-Teller strength and the spin-isospin coupling constants of the Skyrme energy functional

We investigate the effects of the spin-isospin channel of the Skyrme energy functional on predictions for Gamow-Teller distributions and superdeformed rotational bands. We use the generalized Skyrme interaction SkO' to describe even-even ground states and then analyze the effects of time-odd spin-isospin couplings, first term by term and then together via linear regression. Some terms affect the strength and energy of the Gamow-Teller resonance in finite nuclei without altering the Landau parameter g_0' that to leading order determines spin-isospin properties of nuclear matter. Though the existing data are not sufficient to uniquely determine all the spin-isospin couplings, we are able to fit them locally. Altering these coupling constants does not change the quality with which the Skyrme functional describes rotational bands.

The Shears Mechanism in 142Gd in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Method with the Tilted-Axis Cranking

We report on the first Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations with the tilted-axis cranking in the context of magnetic rotation. The mean field symmetries, differences between phenomenological and self-consistent methods and the generation of shears-like structures in the mean field are discussed. Significant role of the time-odd spin-spin effective interaction is pointed out. We reproduce the shears mechanism, but quantitative agreement with experiment is rather poor. It may have to do with too large core polarization, lack of pairing correlations or properties of the Skyrme force.

Contact pairing interaction for the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations

Properties of density-dependent contact pairing interactions in nuclei are discussed. It is shown that the pairing interaction that is intermediate between surface and volume pairing forces gives the pairing gaps that are compatible with the experimental odd-even mass staggering. Results of the deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for this `mixed' pairing interaction, and using the transformed harmonic oscillator basis, are presented.

Pairing Interaction and Self-Consistent Densities in Neutron-Rich Nuclei

Particle and pairing densities in spherical even-even neutron-rich nuclei are studied within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the density-dependent pairing interaction. The influence of the density dependence of the pairing interaction on asymptotic properties of nucleonic distributions are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the size of the neutron halo dramatically depends on the behavior of the pairing interaction at low density.
