Sewing Riemannian Manifolds with Positive Scalar Curvature

We explore to what extent one may hope to preserve geometric properties of three dimensional manifolds with lower scalar curvature bounds under Gromov-Hausdorff and Intrinsic Flat limits. We introduce a new construction, called sewing, of three dimensional manifolds that preserves positive scalar curvature. We then use sewing to produce sequences of such manifolds which converge to spaces that fail to have nonnegative scalar curvature in a standard generalized sense. Since the notion of nonnegative scalar curvature is not strong enough to persist alone, we propose that one pair a lower scalar curvature bound with a lower bound on the area of a closed minimal surface when taking sequences as this will exclude the possibility of sewing of manifolds.

Elliptic operators on infinite graphs

We present some applications of ideas from partial differential equations and differential geometry to the study of difference equations on infinite graphs. All operators that we consider are examples of "elliptic operators" as defined by Y. Colin de Verdiere. For such operators, we discuss analogs of inequalities of Cheeger and Harnack and of the maximum principle (in both elliptic and parabolic versions), and apply them to study spectral theory, the ground state and the heat semigroup associated to these operators.

Arithmetic properties of eigenvalues of generalized Harper operators on graphs

Let $\Qbar$ denote the field of complex algebraic numbers. A discrete group $G$ is said to have the $σ$-multiplier algebraic eigenvalue property, if for every matrix $A$ with entries in the twisted group ring over the complex algebraic numbers $M_d(\Qbar(G,σ))$, regarded as an operator on $l^2(G)^d$, the eigenvalues of $A$ are algebraic numbers, where $σ$ is an algebraic multiplier. Such operators include the Harper operator and the discrete magnetic Laplacian that occur in solid state physics. We prove that any finitely generated amenable, free or surface group has this property for any algebraic multiplier $σ$. In the special case when $σ$ is rational ($σ^n$=1 for some positive integer $n$) this property holds for a larger class of groups, containing free groups and amenable groups, and closed under taking directed unions and extensions with amenable quotients. Included in the paper are proofs of other spectral properties of such operators.

Integral Structures on H-type Lie Algebras

In this paper we prove that every H-type Lie algebra possesses a basis with respect to which the structure constants are integers. Existence of such an integral basis implies via the Mal'cev criterion that all simply connected H-type Lie groups contain cocompact lattices. Since the Campbell-Hausdorff formula is very simple for two-step nilpotent Lie groups we can actually avoid invoking the Mal'cev criterion and exhibit our lattices in an explicit way. As an application, we calculate the isoperimetric dimensions of H-type groups.
