Development of a Modular Current-Mode NaI(Tl) Detector Array for Parity Odd (n,{\gamma}) Cross Section Measurements

The Neutron Optics Parity and Time-Reversal Violation Experiment (NOPTREX) Collaboration has developed a modular array of 24 NaI(Tl) detectors to measure parity and time-reversal symmetry violation in neutron-nucleus interactions. These detectors feature custom electronics that allow for operation in pulse or current mode. This paper describes the design, construction, characterization, and testing of the detectors in this array. We demonstrate the ability of the array to detect parity-odd asymmetries in neutron resonances by observing the known 0.7 eV parity-violating resonance in 139La in measurements at LANSCE.

Angular distribution of $γ$-rays from a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance of $^{132}$Xe

A neutron-energy dependent angular distribution was measured for individual $γ$-rays from the 3.2 eV $p$-wave resonance of $^{131}$Xe+$n$, that shows enhanced parity violation owing to a mixing between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes. The $γ$-ray transitions from the $p$-wave resonance were identified, and the angular distribution with respect to the neutron momentum was evaluated as a function of the neutron energy for 7132 keV $γ$-rays, which correspond to a transition to the 1807 keV excited state of $^{132}$Xe. The angular distribution is considered to originate from the interference between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes, and will provide a basis for a quantitative understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the fundamental parity violation in compound nuclei.

A modular apparatus for use in high-precision measurements of parity violation in polarized eV neutron transmission`

We describe a modular apparatus for use in parity-violation measurements in epithermal neutron-nucleus resonances with high instantaneous neutron fluxes at the Manuel Lujan Jr.\ Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This apparatus is designed to conduct high-precision measurements of the parity-odd transmission asymmetry of longitudinally polarized neutrons through targets containing nuclei with p-wave neutron-nucleus resonances in the 0.1-10 eV energy regime and to accommodate a future search for time reversal violation in polarized neutron transmission through polarized nuclear targets. The apparatus consists of an adjustable neutron and gamma collimation system, a \(^3\)He-$^{4}$He ion chamber neutron flux monitor, two identical cryostats for target cooling, an adiabatic eV-neutron spin flipper, a near-unit efficiency \(^6\)Li-\(^{7}\)Li scintillation detector operated in current mode, a flexible CAEN data acquisition system, and a neutron spin filter based on spin-exchange optical pumping of $^{3}$He gas. We describe the features of the apparatus design devoted to the suppression of systematic errors in parity-odd asymmetry measurements. We describe the configuration of the apparatus used to conduct a precision measurement of parity violation at the 0.7 eV p-wave resonance in $^{139}$La which employs two identical $^{139}$La targets, one to polarize the beam on the p-wave resonance using the weak interaction and one to analyze the polarization.

Analyzing Powers and Spin Correlation Coefficients for p+d Elastic Scattering at 135 and 200 MeV

The proton and deuteron analyzing powers and 10 of the possible 12 spin correlation coefficients have been measured for p+d elastic scattering at proton bombarding energies of 135 and 200 MeV. The results are compared with Faddeev calculations using two different NN potentials. The qualitative features of the extensive data set on the spin dependence in p+d elastic scattering over a wide range of angles presented here are remarkably well explained by two-nucleon force predictions without inclusion of a three-nucleon force. The remaining discrepancies are, in general, not alleviated when theoretical three-nucleon forces are included in the calculations.

Experimental search for evidence of the three-nucleon force and a new analysis method

A research program with the aim of investigating the spin dependence of the three-nucleon continuum in pd collisions at intermediate energies was carried out at IUCF using the Polarized INternal Target EXperiments (PINTEX) facility. In the elastic scattering experiment at 135 and 200 MeV proton beam energies a total of 15 independent spin observables were obtained. The breakup experiment was done with a vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of 270 MeV and an internal polarized hydrogen gas target. We developed a novel technique for the analysis of the breakup observables, the sampling method. The new approach takes into account acceptance and non-uniformities of detection efficiencies and is suitable for any kinematically complete experiment with three particles in the final state.

A Proposal for a Near Detector Experiment on the Booster Neutrino Beamline: FINeSSE: Fermilab Intense Neutrino Scattering Scintillator Experiment

Understanding the quark and gluon substructure of the nucleon has been a prime goal of both nuclear and particle physics for more than thirty years and has led to much of the progress in strong interaction physics. Still the flavor dependence of the nucleon's spin is a significant fundamental question that is not understood. Experiments measuring the spin content of the nucleon have reported conflicting results on the amount of nucleon spin carried by strange quarks. Quasi-elastic neutrino scattering, observed using a novel detection technique, provides a theoretically clean measure of this quantity. The optimum neutrino beam energy needed to measure the strange spin of the nucleon is 1 GeV. This is also an ideal energy to search for neutrino oscillations at high $Δm^2$ in an astrophysically interesting region. Models of the r-process in supernovae which include high-mass sterile neutrinos may explain the abundance of neutron-rich heavy metals in the universe. These high-mass sterile neutrinos are outside the sensitivity region of any previous neutrino oscillation experiments. The Booster neutrino beamline at Fermilab provides the world's highest intensity neutrino beam in the 0.5-1.0 GeV energy range, a range ideal for both of these measurements. A small detector located upstream of the MiniBooNE detector, 100 m from the recently commissioned Booster neutrino source, could definitively measure the strange quark contribution to the nucleon spin. This detector, in conjunction with the MiniBooNE detector, could also investigate $ν_μ$ disappearance in a currently unexplored, cosmologically interesting region.

Measurement of Analyzing Power for Proton-Carbon Elastic Scattering in the Coulomb-Nuclear Interference Region with a 22-GeV/c Polarized Proton Beam

The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\times10^{-3}<-t<4.1\times10^{-2}$ (GeV/$c)^{2}$, was measured with a 21.7 GeV/$c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to non-flip amplitude, $r_5$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\text{Re} r_5=0.088\pm 0.058$ and $\text{Im} r_5=-0.161\pm 0.226$.

Measurement of Spin Correlation coefficients in \vec p \vec p --> d pi^+

The spin correlation coefficent combinations A_{xx}+A_{yy} and A_{xx}-A_{yy}, the spin correlation coefficients A_{xz} and A_{zz}, and the analyzing power were measured for \vec p \vec p --> d pi^+ between center-of-mass angles 25 deg \leq θ\leq 65 deg at beam energies of 350.5, 375.0 and 400.0 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target and a stored, polarized beam. Non-vertical beam polarization needed for the measurement of A_{zz} was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, only a few partial waves contribute, and pion s- and p-waves dominate with a possible small admixture of d-waves. Certain combinations of the observables reported here are a direct measure of these d-waves. The d-wave contributions are found to be negligible even at 400.0 MeV.

Initial singlet and triplet spin state contributions to pp -> pp pi0

The PINTEX facility at the IUCF Cooler ring, dedicated to the study of spin dependence in nucleon-nucleon interactions, has been used to measure polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 at beam energies between 325 and 400 MeV. The stored polarized proton beam had spin projections both in the longitudinal and the transverse directions with respect to the beam momentum. We report here on the measurements of the relative transverse and longitudinal spin-dependent cross sections, deltasigma_T/sigma_tot and deltasigma_L/sigma_tot, and how from these observables the initial spin singlet and triplet cross sections are obtained. Considering angular momentum states less or equal to one, the contribution of the Ps partial waves to the cross section can be extracted.

Measurement of Partial-Wave Contributions in pp --> pp pi^0

We report a measurement of the spin-dependent total cross section ratios delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot and delta_sigma_L/sigma_tot of the pp --> pp pi^0 reaction between 325 MeV and 400 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target in a storage ring. Non-vertical beam polarization was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, the knowledge of both spin-dependent total cross sections is sufficient to deduce the strength of certain participating partial waves, free of any model.

Polarization Observables of pp -> pp pi0 Near Threshold

With the aim to study spin dependence of pion production near threshold, an internal target facility and a forward detector have been installed in the Cooler synchrotron ring at IUCF. The detector system comprises scintillators and wire chambers. The target consists of a thin-walled open-ended storage cell into which polarized atomic hydrogen is injected. Using a stored and cooled, polarized proton beam, polarization observables of the reaction pp -> pp pi0 have been studied at energies between 21 and 55 MeV above the pion production threshold in the center of mass system. We report here measurements of the spin correlation parameters Axx and Ayy, and the analyzing power Ay, integrated over the pion polar angle.

Dependence of pp->pp pi0 near Threshold on the Spin of the Colliding Nucleons

A polarized internal atomic hydrogen target and a stored, polarized beam are used to measure the spin-dependent total cross section Delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot, as well as the polar integrals of the spin correlation coefficient combination A_xx-A_yy, and the analyzing power A_y for pp-> pp pi0 at four bombarding energies between 325 and 400 MeV. This experiment is made possible by the use of a cooled beam in a storage ring. The polarization observables are used to study the contribution from individual partial waves.
