Deformation Effects in Hot Rotating 46Ti Probed by the Charged Particle Emission and GDR gamma-Decay

The 46Ti* compound nucleus, as populated by the fusion-evaporation reaction 27Al+19F at the bombarding energy of E_lab=144 MeV, has been investigated by charged particle spectroscopy using the multidetector array ICARE at the VIVITRON tandem facility of the IReS (Strasbourg). The light charged particles and high-energy gamma-rays from the GDR decay have been measured in coincidence with selected evaporation residues. The CACARIZO code, a Monte Carlo implementation of the statistical-model code CASCADE, has been used to calculate the spectral shapes of evaporated alpha-particles which are compared with the experimental coincident spectra. This comparison indicates the signature of large deformations (possibly superdeformed and hyperdeformed shapes) present in the compound nucleus decay. The occurrence of the Jacobi shape transition is also discussed in the framework of a newly developed rotating liquid drop model.

Collective Rotation of Tetrahedral Nuclei in the Cranking Model

The three-dimensional cranking model is used to investigate the microscopic aspects of the rotation of nuclei with the tetrahedral symmetry. Two classes of rotation axes are studied corresponding to two different discrete symmetries of the rotating hamiltonian. Self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations show that the tetrahedral minimum remains remarkably stable until the first single-particle crossing.

Search for the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Solutions for Chiral Rotation in N=75 Isotones

A search for the self-consistent solutions for the chiral rotational bands in the N=75 isotones, 130Cs, 132La, 134Pr and 136Pm is performed within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock cranking approach using SKM* and SLy4 parametrizations. The dependence of the solutions on the time-odd contributions in the energy functional is studied. From among the considered four isotones, self-consistent chiral solutions are obtained only in 132La. The microscopic calculations are compared with the 132La experimental data and with results of a classical model that contains all the mechanisms underlying the chirality of the collective rotational motion. Strong similarities between the HF and classical model results are found. The suggestion formulated earlier by the authors that the chiral rotation cannot exist below a certain critical frequency is further illustrated and discussed, together with the microscopic origin of a transition from the planar to chiral rotation in nuclei. We also formulate the separability rule by which the Tilted-Axis-Cranking solutions can be inferred from three independent Principal-Axis-Cranking solutions corresponding to three different axes of rotation.

GDR Feeding of the Highly-Deformed Band in 42Ca

The gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the GDR in the compound nucleus reaction 18O+28Si at bombarding energy of 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using the EUROBALL IV and HECTOR arrays. The obtained experimental GDR strength function is highly fragmented, with a low energy (10 MeV) component, indicating a presence of a large deformation and Coriolis effects. In addition, the preferential feeding of the highly-deformed band in 42Ca by this GDR low energy component is observed.

Tetrahedral Symmetry in Ground- and Low-Lying States of Exotic A ~ 110 Nuclei

Recent theoretical calculations predict a possible existence of nuclei with tetrahedral symmetry: more precisely, the mean-field hamiltonians of such nuclei are symmetric with respect to double point-group Td. In this paper, we focus on the neutron-rich Zirconium isotopes as an example and present realistic mean-field calculations which predict tetrahedral ground-state configurations in 108,110Zr and low-lying excited states of tetrahedral symmetry in a number of N > 66 isotopes. The motivations for focusing on these nuclei, as well as a discussion of the possible experimental signatures of tetrahedral symmetry are also presented.

Quantum Rotational Spectra and Classical Rotors

We consider the generalized rotor Hamiltonians capable of describing quantum systems invariant with respect to symmetry point-groups that go beyond the usual D_2-symmetry of a tri-axial rotor. We discuss the canonical de-quantisation procedure to obtain the classical analogs of the original quantum Hamiltonians. Classical and quantum solutions to the Hamiltonians relevant in the nuclear physics applications are illustrated and compared using the 'usual' (D_2) and an 'exotic' (T_d) symmetries.

Nuclear Tetrahedral Symmetry

We recall the main features of the Td (tetrahedral) symmetry in atomic nuclei and present realistic mean-field calculations supporting the existence such a symmetry all over the nuclear chart. A few potential candidate-nuclei are investigated and the possible experimental signatures of the tetrahedral symmetry are also briefly discussed.

Evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti

The gamma-rays from the decay of the GDR in 46Ti compound nucleus formed in the 18O+28Si reaction at bombarding energy 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using a setup consisting of the combined EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays. A comparison of the extracted GDR lineshape data with the predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model shows evidence for the Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti. In addition to the previously found broad structure in the GDR lineshape region at 18-27 MeV caused by large deformations, the presence of a low energy component (around 10 MeV), due to the Coriolis splitting in prolate well deformed shape, has been identified for the first time.

Atomic Nuclei with Tetrahedral and Octahedral Symmetries

We present possible manifestations of octahedral and tetrahedral symmetries in nuclei. These symmetries are associated with the OhD and TdD double point groups. Both of them have very characteristic finger-prints in terms of the nucleonic level properties - unique in the Fermionic universe. The tetrahedral symmetry leads to the four-fold degeneracies in the nucleonic spectra; it does not preserve the parity. The octahedral symmetry leads to the four-fold degeneracies in the nucleonic spectra as well but it does preserve the parity. Microscopic predictions have been obtained using mean-field theory based on the relativistic equations and confirmed by using 'traditional' Schroedinger equation formalism. Calculations are performed in multidimensional deformation spaces using newly designed algorithms. We discuss some experimental fingerprints of the hypothetical new symmetries and possibilities of their verification through experiments.

Search for the Jacobi shape transition in light nuclei

The gamma-rays following the reaction 105 MeV 18O + 28Si have been measured using the EUROBALL IV, HECTOR and EUCLIDES arrays in order to investigate the predicted Jacobi shape transition. The high-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the GDR decay indicates a presence of large deformations in hot 46Ti nucleus, in agreement with new theoretical calculations based on the Rotating Liquid Drop model.

Critical frequency in nuclear chiral rotation

Within the cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach the self-consistent solutions have been obtained for planar and chiral rotational bands in 132La. It turns out that the chiral band cannot exist below some critical rotational frequency which in the present case equals omega=0.6MeV. The appearance of the critical frequency is explained in terms of a simple classical model of two gyroscopes coupled to a triaxial rigid body.

Interaction Strengths for the Fock-Space Formulation of the Nuclear Pairing Problem

A realistic nuclear mean-field hamiltonian with pairing has been diagonalized using Fock space representation that allows for nearly exact treatment of the problem. Calculations were performed for all the even-even nuclei with Z in (20, 100), whose pairing gaps were possible to extract out of the experimental masses. The optimal values of the pairing strength constants for the protons and neutrons have been found.

The T=0 neutron-proton pairing correlations in the superdeformed rotational bands around 60Zn

The superdeformed bands in 58Cu, 59Cu, 60Zn, and 61Zn are analyzed within the frameworks of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock as well as Strutinsky-Woods-Saxon total routhian surface methods with and without the T=1 pairing correlations. It is shown that a consistent description within these standard approaches cannot be achieved. A T=0 neutron-proton pairing configuration mixing of signature-separated bands in 60Zn is suggested as a possible solution to the problem.

Nuclear Tetrahedral Symmetry: Possibly Present Throughout the Periodic Table

More than half a century after the fundamental, spherical shell structure in nuclei has been established, theoretical predictions indicate that the shell-gaps comparable or even stronger than those at spherical shapes may exist. Group-theoretical analysis supported by realistic mean-field calculations indicate that the corresponding nuclei are characterized by the $T_d^D$ ('double-tetrahedral') group of symmetry, exact or approximate. The corresponding strong shell-gap structure is markedly enhanced by the existence of the 4-dimensional irreducible representations of the group in question and consequently it can be seen as a geometrical effect that does not depend on a particular realization of the mean-field. Possibilities of discovering the corresponding symmetry in experiment are discussed.

Nuclear Liquid Drop Model with the Surface-Curvature Terms: New Perspectives for the Hyperdeformation Studies

Nuclear liquid drop model is revisited and an explicit introduction of the surface-curvature terms is presented. The corresponding parameters of the extended classical energy formula are adjusted to the contemporarily known nuclear binding energies and fission barrier heights. Using 2766 binding energies of nuclei with $Z\geq 8$ and $N\geq 8$ it is shown that the performance of the new approach is improved by a factor of about 6, compared to the previously published liquid drop model results, in terms of both the masses (new r.m.s. deviation $<δM> = 0.698$ MeV) and the fission barriers (new r.m.s. deviation of the fission barriers of isotopes with $Z> 70$ is $<δV_B> = 0.88$ MeV). The role of the curvature terms and their effects on the description of the experimental quantities are discussed in detail; for comparison the parameters of the more 'traditional' approaches are re-fitted taking into account the nuclear masses known today and the performances of several variants of the model are compared. The isospin dependence in the new description of the barriers is in a good agreement with the extended Thomas-Fermi approach; it also demonstrates a good qualitative agreement with the fission life-time systematics tested on the long chain of Fermium isotopes known experimentally. The new approach offers also a very high stability in terms of the extrapolation from the narrower range of nuclides to a more extended one - a property of particular interest for the contemporary exotic beam projects: the corresponding properties are illustrated and discussed.

The Shears Mechanism in 142Gd in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Method with the Tilted-Axis Cranking

We report on the first Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations with the tilted-axis cranking in the context of magnetic rotation. The mean field symmetries, differences between phenomenological and self-consistent methods and the generation of shears-like structures in the mean field are discussed. Significant role of the time-odd spin-spin effective interaction is pointed out. We reproduce the shears mechanism, but quantitative agreement with experiment is rather poor. It may have to do with too large core polarization, lack of pairing correlations or properties of the Skyrme force.

Solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock equations in the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. (III) HFODD (v1.75r): a new version of the program

We describe the new version (v1.75r) of the code HFODD which solves the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock problem by using the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. Three minor errors that went undetected in the previous version have been corrected. The new version contains an interface to the LAPACK subroutine ZHPEV. Several methods of terminating the Hartree-Fock iteration procedure, and an algorithm that allows to follow the diabatic configurations, have been implemented.
