Comment on "Quantum phase transition in the four-spin exchange antiferromagnet" by V. N. Kotov, D.-X. Yao, A. H. Castro-Neto, and D. K. Campbell

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. {\bf B80}, 174403 (2009)] Kotov {\it et al.} studied the paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition in the $J$-$Q$ model. Their findings were claimed to be in "fairly good agreement" with previous quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results. In this Comment we show that the above claim is misleading and in reality their phase transition point is not only far from the corresponding QMC value but also lies in a region of parameter space not yet explored in the literature. We also show that their reference dimer state is unstable against formation of a plaquette condensate, which could in part explain the large fluctuations they found.

Competition between Normal Superfluidity and Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phases of Polarized Fermi Gases in Elongated Traps

By applying the recently proposed antisymmetric superfluid local density approximation (ASLDA) to strongly interacting polarized atomic gases at unitarity in very elongated traps, we find families of Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) type of solutions with prominent transversal oscillation of pairing potential. These LO states coexist with a superfluid state having a smooth pairing potential. We suggest that the LO phase could be accessible experimentally by increasing adiabatically the trap aspect ratio. We show that the local asymmetry effects contained in ASLDA do not support a deformed superfluid core predicted by previous Bogoliubov-de Gennes treatments.

Decoherence as a signature of an excited state quantum phase transition

We analyze the decoherence induced on a single qubit by the interaction with a two-level boson system with critical internal dynamics. We explore how the decoherence process is affected by the presence of quantum phase transitions in the environment. We conclude that the dynamics of the qubit changes dramatically when the environment passes through a continuous excited state quantum phase transition. If the system-environment coupling energy equals the energy at which the environment has a critical behavior, the decoherence induced on the qubit is maximal and the fidelity tends to zero with finite size scaling obeying a power-law.

Decoherence due to an excited state quantum phase transition in a two-level boson model

The decoherence induced on a single qubit by its interaction with the environment is studied. The environment is modelled as a scalar two-level boson system that can go through either first order or continuous excited state quantum phase transitions, depending on the values of the control parameters. A mean field method based on the Tamm-Damkoff approximation is worked out in order to understand the observed behaviour of the decoherence. Only the continuous excited state phase transition produces a noticeable effect in the decoherence of the qubit. This is maximal when the system-environment coupling brings the environment to the critical point for the continuous phase transition. In this situation, the decoherence factor (or the fidelity) goes to zero with a finite size scaling power law.

Pairing in 4-component fermion systems: the bulk limit of SU(4)-symmetric Hamiltonians

Fermion systems with more than two components can exhibit pairing condensates of much more complex structure than the well-known single BCS condensate of spin-up and spin-down fermions. In the framework of the exactly solvable SO(8) Richardson-Gaudin model with SU(4)-symmetric Hamiltonians, we show that the BCS approximation remains valid in the thermodynamic limit of large systems for describing the ground state energy and the canonical and quasiparticle excitation gaps. Correlations beyond BCS pairing give rise to a spectrum of collective excitations, but these do not affect the bulk energy and quasiparticle gaps.

Phase diagram of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet with four-spin interactions

We study the quantum phase diagram of the Heisenberg planar antiferromagnet with a subset of four-spin ring exchange interactions, using the recently proposed heirarchical mean-field approach. By identifying relevant degrees of freedom, we are able to use a single variational anzatz to map the entire phase diagram of the model and uncover the nature of its various phases. It is shown that there exists a transition between a Néel state and a quantum paramagnetic phase, characterized by broken translational invariance. The non-magnetic phase preserves the lattice rotational symmetry, and has a correlated plaquette nature. Our results also suggest that this phase transition can be properly described within the Landau paradigm.

Local physics of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model

We address the physical mechanism responsible for the emergence of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model. By using a hierarchical mean-field approach we demonstrate that a plateau is stabilized in a certain {\it spin pattern}, satisfying {\it local} commensurability conditions derived from our formalism. Our results provide evidence in favor of a robust local physics nature of the plateaux states, and are in agreement with recent NMR experiments on $\scbo$.

Isovector neutron-proton pairing with particle number projected BCS

The particle number projected BCS (PBCS) approximation is tested against the exact solution of the SO(5) Richardson-Gaudin model for isovector pairing in a system of non-degenerate single particle orbits. Two isovector PBCS wave functions are considered. One is constructed as a single proton-neutron pair condensate, while the other corresponds to a product of a neutron pair condensate and a proton pair condensate. The PBCS equations are solved using a recurrence method and the analysis is performed for systems with an equal number of neutrons and protons distributed in a sequence of equally spaced 4-fold (spin-isospin) degenerate levels. The results show that although PBCS improves significantly over BCS, the agreement of PBCS with the exact solution is less satisfactory than in the case of the SU(2) Richardson model for pairing between like particles.

Hierarchical mean-field approach to the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice

We study the quantum phase diagram and excitation spectrum of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A hierarchical mean-field approach, at the heart of which lies the idea of identifying {\it relevant} degrees of freedom, is developed. Thus, by performing educated, manifestly symmetry preserving mean-field approximations, we unveil fundamental properties of the system. We then compare various coverings of the square lattice with plaquettes, dimers and other degrees of freedom, and show that only the {\it symmetric plaquette} covering, which reproduces the original Bravais lattice, leads to the known phase diagram. The intermediate quantum paramagnetic phase is shown to be a (singlet) {\it plaquette crystal}, connected with the neighboring Néel phase by a continuous phase transition. We also introduce fluctuations around the hierarchical mean-field solutions, and demonstrate that in the paramagnetic phase the ground and first excited states are separated by a finite gap, which closes in the Néel and columnar phases. Our results suggest that the quantum phase transition between Néel and paramagnetic phases can be properly described within the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm.

Degeneracies in a nonintegrable pairing model

The evolution pattern of exceptional points is studied in a non-integrable limit of the complex-extended 3-level Richardson-Gaudin model. The appearance of a pseudo-diabolic point from the fusion of two exceptional points is demonstrated in the anti-hermitian limit of the model and studied in some details.

Unexpected features of quantum degeneracies in a pairing model with two integrable limits

The evolution pattern of level crossings and exceptional points is studied in a non-integrable pairing model with two different integrable limits. One of the integrable limits has two independent parameter-dependent integrals of motion. We demonstrate, and illustrate in our model, that quantum integrability of a system with more than one parameter-dependent integral of motion is always signaled by level crossings of a complex-extended Hamiltonian. We also find that integrability implies a reduced number of exceptional points. Both properties could uniquely characterize quantum integrability in small Hilbert spaces.

Density matrix renormalization group approach to two-fluid open many-fermion systems

We have extended the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach to two-fluid open many-fermion systems governed by complex-symmetric Hamiltonians. The applications are carried out for three- and four-nucleon (proton-neutron) systems within the Gamow Shell Model (GSM) in the complex-energy plane. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for the GSM+DMRG method to yield the correct ground state eigenvalue and discuss different truncation schemes within DMRG. The proposed approach will enable configuration interaction studies of weakly-bound and unbound strongly interacting complex systems which, because of a prohibitively large size of Fock space, cannot be treated by means of the direct diagonalization.

The Cooper pair from radio-frequency excitations in ultracold gases

We discuss the concept of Cooper pair in the context of recent experimental studies of radio-frequency excitations in ultracold atomic gases. We argue that the threshold energy determines the size of the Cooper pair emergent from the exact solution of the reduced BCS problem, and elaborate on the physical distinction between bosonic and fermionic Cooper pairs.

Decoherence induced by an interacting spin environment in the transition from integrability to chaos

We investigate the decoherence properties of a central system composed of two spins 1/2 in contact with a spin bath. The dynamical regime of the bath ranges from a fully integrable integrable limit to complete chaoticity. We show that the dynamical regime of the bath determines the efficiency of the decoherence process. For perturbative regimes, the integrable limit provides stronger decoherence, while in the strong coupling regime the chaotic limit becomes more efficient. We also show that the decoherence time behaves in a similar way. On the contrary, the rate of decay of magnitudes like linear entropy or fidelity does not depend on the dynamical regime of the bath. We interpret the latter results as due to a comparable complexity of the Hamiltonian for both the integrable and the fully chaotic limits.

Cooper pairs in atomic nuclei

We consider the development of Cooper pairs in a self-consistent Hartree Fock mean field for the even Sm isotopes. Results are presented at the level of a BCS treatment, a number-projected BCS treatment and an exact treatment using the Richardson ansatz. While projected BCS captures much of the pairing correlation energy that is absent from BCS, it still misses a sizable correlation energy, typically of order $1 MeV$. Furthermore, because it does not average over the properties of the fermion pairs, the exact Richardson solution permits a more meaningful definition of the Cooper wave function and of the fraction of pairs that are collective.

Exact solution of the spin-isospin proton-neutron pairing Hamiltonian

The exact solution of proton-neutron isoscalar-isovector (T=0,1) pairing Hamiltonian with non-degenerate single-particle orbits and equal pairing strengths (g_{T=1}= g_{T=0}) is presented for the first time. The Hamiltonian is a particular case of a family of integrable SO(8) Richardson-Gaudin (RG) models. The exact solution of the T=0,1 pairing Hamiltonian is reduced to a problem of 4 sets of coupled non linear equations that determine the spectral parameters of the complete set of eigenstates. The microscopic structure of individual eigenstates is analyzed in terms of evolution of the spectral parameters in the complex plane for system of A=80 nucleons. The spectroscopic trends of the exact solutions are discussed in terms of generalized rotations in isospace.

Solving the Richardson equations close to the critical points

We study the Richardson equations close to the critical values of the paring strength g_c where the occurrence of divergencies preclude numerical solutions. We derive a set of equations for determining the critical g values and the non-collapsing pair energies. Studying the behavior of the solutions close to the critical points, we develop a procedure to solve numerically the Richardson equations for arbitrary coupling strength.
