Condensate Fragmentation in a New Exactly Solvable Model for Confined Bosons

Based on Richardson's exact solution of the pairing model and the Gaudin model for spin systems we derive a new class of exactly solvable models for finite boson system. As an example we solve a particular hamiltonian which displays a transition to a fragmented condensate for repulsive pairing interactions.

New mechanism for the enhancement of $sd$ dominance in interacting boson models

We introduce an exactly solvable model for interacting bosons that extend up to high spin and interact through a repulsive pairing force. The model exhibits a phase transition to a state with almost complete $sd$ dominance. The repulsive pairing interaction that underlies the model has a natural microscopic origin in the Pauli exclusion principle between contituent nucleons. As such, repulsive pairing between bosons seems to provide a new mechanism for the enhancement of $sd$ dominance, giving further support for the validity of the $sd$ Interacting Boson Model.

A New Approach to Large-Scale Nuclear Structure Calculations

A new approach to large-scale nuclear structure calculations, based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG), is described. The method is tested in the context of a problem involving many identical nucleons constrained to move in a single large-j shell and interacting via a pairing plus quadrupole interaction. In cases in which exact diagonalization of the hamiltonian is possible, the method is able to reproduce the exact results for the ground state energy and the energies of low-lying excited states with extreme precision. Results are also presented for a model problem in which exact solution is not feasible.

An intrinsic state for an extended version of the interacting boson model

An intrinsic-state formalism for IBM-4 is presented. A basis of deformed bosons is introduced which allows the construction of a general trial wave function which has Wigner's spin-isospin SU(4) symmetry as a particular limit. Intrinsic-state calculations are compared with exact ones showing good agreement.

The Crossover from the Bulk to the Few-Electron limit in Ultrasmall Metallic Grains

We study the properties of ultrasmall metallic grains with sizes in the range of 20 up to 400 electrons. Using a particle-hole version of the DMRG method we compute condensation energies, spectroscopic gaps, pairing parameters and particle-hole probabilities of the ground state wave function. The results presented in this paper confirm that the bulk superconducting regime (large grains) and the fluctuation dominated regime (small grains) are qualitative different, but show that the crossover between them is very smooth with no signs of critical level spacings separating them. We compare our DMRG results with the exact ones obtained with the Richardson solution finding complete agreement. We also propose a simplified version of the DMRG wave function, called the Particle-Hole BCS ansatz, which agrees qualitatively with the DMRG solution and illustrates what is lacking in the PBCS wave function in order to describe correctly the crossover. Finally we present a new recursive method to compute norms and expectation values with the PBCS wave function.

Exact Study of the Effect of Level Statistics in Ultrasmall Superconducting Grains

The reduced BCS model that is commonly used for ultrasmall superconducting grains has an exact solution worked out long ago by Richardson in the context of nuclear physics. We use it to check the quality of previous treatments of this model, and to investigate the effect of level statistics on pairing correlations. We find that the ground state energies are on average somewhat lower for systems with non-uniform than uniform level spacings, but both have an equally smooth crossover from the bulk to the few-electron regime. In the latter, statistical fluctuations in ground state energies strongly depend on the grain's electron number parity.

A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Ultrasmall Superconducting Grains

We apply the DMRG method to the BCS pairing Hamiltonian which describes ultrasmall superconducting grains. Our version of the DMRG uses the particle (hole) states around the Fermi level as the system block (environment). We observe a smooth logarithmic-like crossover between the few electron regime and the BCS-bulk regime.

Occupation numbers in Self Consistent RPA

A method is proposed which allows to calculate within the SCRPA theory the occupation numbers via the single particle Green function. This scheme complies with the Hugenholtz van Hove theorem. In an application to the Lipkin model it is found that this prescription gives consistently better results than two other commonly used approximations: lowest order boson expansion and the number operator method.

Phase Diagram of the 2-Leg Heisenberg Ladder with Alternating Dimerization

Using the Lanczos method we determine the phase diagram of the 2-leg AF-Heisenberg ladder with alternating dimerization. It consists of a resonating valence bond phase and a dimer phase separated by a critical line. Our results are in good agreement with previous conjectures obtained with the non linear sigma model.

Diagonal Ladders: A New Class of Models for Strongly Coupled Electron Systems

We introduce a class of models defined on ladders with a diagonal structure generated by $n_p$ plaquettes. The case $n_p=1$ corresponds to the necklace ladder and has remarkable properties which are studied using DMRG and recurrent variational ansatzes. The AF Heisenberg model on this ladder is equivalent to the alternating spin-1/spin-1/2 AFH chain which is known to have a ferrimagnetic ground state (GS). For doping 1/3 the GS is a fully doped (1,1) stripe with the holes located mostly along the principal diagonal while the minor diagonals are occupied by spin singlets. This state can be seen as a Mott insulator of localized Cooper pairs on the plaquettes. A physical picture of our results is provided by a $t_p-J_p$ model of plaquettes coupled diagonally with a hopping parameter $t_d$. In the limit $t_d \to \infty$ we recover the original $t-J$ model on the necklace ladder while for weak hopping parameter the model is easily solvable. The GS in the strong hopping regime is essentially an "on link" Gutzwiller projection of the weak hopping GS. We generalize the $t_p-J_p-t_d$ model to diagonal ladders with $n_p >1$ and the 2D square lattice. We use in our construction concepts familiar in Statistical Mechanics as medial graphs and Bratelli diagrams.

Self consistent random phase approximation within the O(5) model and Fermi transitions

Self Consistent Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (SCQRPA) is considered in application to the Fermi transitions within the O(5) model. It is demonstrated that SCQRPA improves on renormalized QRPA (RQRPA), a method that has recently become rather popular in this context. The analytical form of the SCQRPA vacuum is used to evaluate all the matrix elements. The SCQRPA results show a general trend similar to the exact solutions. The necessity to change the single particle basis beyond the transition point, and to include the proton-proton and neutron-neutron channels in the QRPA operator, in addition to the proton-neutron one, is pointed out.

The Matrix Product Approach to Quantum Spin Ladders

We present a manifestly rotational invariant formulation of the matrix product method valid for spin chains and ladders. We apply it to 2 legged spin ladders with spins 1/2, 1 and 3/2 and different magnetic structures labelled by the exchange coupling constants, which can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic along the legs and the rungs of the ladder We compute ground state energy densities, correlation lengths and string order parameters. We present numerical evidence of the duality properties of the 3 different non ferromagnetic spin 1/2 ladders. We show that the long range topological order characteristic of isolated spin 1 chains is broken by the interchain coupling. The string order correlation function decays exponentially with a finite correlation length that we compute. A physical picture of the spin 1 ladder is given in terms of a collection of resonating spin 1 chains. Finally for ladders with spin equal or greater than 3/2 we define a class of AKLT states whose matrix product coefficients are given by 9-j symbols.

A Hartree-Bose Mean-Field Approximation for IBM-3

A Hartree-Bose mean-field approximation for the IBM-3 is presented. A Hartree- Bose transformation from spherical to deformed bosons with charge-dependent parameters is proposed which allows bosonic pair correlations and includes higher angular momentum bosons. The formalism contains previously proposed IBM-2 and IBM-3 intrinsic states as particular limits.

Equivalence of the Variational Matrix Product Method and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group applied to Spin Chains

We present a rotationally invariant matrix product method (MPM) of isotropic spin chains. This allows us to deal with a larger number of variational MPM parameters than those considered earlier by other authors. We also show the relation between the MPM and the DMRG method of White. In our approach the eigenstates of the density matrix associated with the MPM are used as variational parameters together with the standard MPM parameters. We compute the ground state energy density and the spin correlation length of the spin 1 Heisenberg chain.

The Dimer-Hole-RVB State of the 2-Leg t-J Ladder: A Recurrent Variational Ansatz

We present a variational treatment of the ground state of the 2-leg t-J ladder, which combines the dimer and the hard-core boson models into one effective model. This model allows us to study the local structure of the hole pairs as a function of doping. A second order recursion relation is used to generate the variational wave function, which substantially simplifies the computations. We obtain good agreement with numerical density matrix renormalization group results for the ground state energy in the strong coupling regime. We find that the local structure of the pairs depends upon whether the ladder is slightly or strongly dopped.

Neutron-Proton Correlations in an Exactly Solvable Model

We examine isovector and isoscalar neutron-proton correlations in an exactly solvable model based on the algebra SO(8). We look particularly closely at Gamow-Teller strength and double beta decay, both to isolate the effects of the two kinds of pairing and to test two approximation schemes: the renormalized neutron-proton QRPA (RQRPA) and generalized BCS theory. When isoscalar pairing correlations become strong enough a phase transition occurs and the dependence of the Gamow-Teller beta+ strength on isospin changes in a dramatic and unfamiliar way, actually increasing as neutrons are added to an N=Z core. Renormalization eliminates the well-known instabilities that plague the QRPA as the phase transition is approached, but only by unnaturally suppressing the isoscalar correlations. Generalized BCS theory, on the other hand, reproduces the Gamow-Teller strength more accurately in the isoscalar phase than in the usual isovector phase, even though its predictions for energies are equally good everywhere. It also mixes T=0 and T=1 pairing, but only on the isoscalar side of the phase transition.

Fermion Condensation and Non Fermi Liquid Behavior in a Model with Long Range Forces

The phenomenon of the so called Fermion condensation, a phase transition analogous to Bose condensation but for Fermions, postulated in the past to occur in systems with strong momentum dependent forces, is reanalysed in a model with infinite range interactions. The strongly non Fermi Liquid behavior of this system is demonstrated analytically at $T=0$ and at $T\neq 0$ in the superconducting and normal phases. The validity of the quasiparticle picture is investigated and seems to hold true for temperatures less than the characteristic temperature $T_f$ of the Fermion condensation.
