On the relation between E(5)-models and the interacting boson model

The connections between the $E(5)-$models (the original E(5) using an infinite square well, $E(5)-β^4$, $E(5)-β^6$ and $E(5)-β^8$), based on particular solutions of the geometrical Bohr Hamiltonian with $γ$-unstable potentials, and the interacting boson model (IBM) are explored. For that purpose, the general IBM Hamiltonian for the $U(5)-O(6)$ transition line is used and a numerical fit to the different $E(5)-$models energies is performed. It is shown that within the IBM one can reproduce very well all these $E(5)-$models. The agreement is the best for $E(5)-β^4$ and reduces when passing through $E(5)-β^6$, $E(5)-β^8$ and E(5), where the worst agreement is obtained (although still very good for a restricted set of lowest lying states). The fitted IBM Hamiltonians correspond to energy surfaces close to those expected for the critical point.

Partial dynamical symmetry in quantum Hamiltonians with higher-order terms

A generic procedure is proposed to construct many-body quantum Hamiltonians with partial dynamical symmetry. It is based on a tensor decomposition of the Hamiltonian and allows the construction of a hierarchy of interactions that have selected classes of solvable states. The method is illustrated in the SO(6) limit of the interacting boson model of atomic nuclei and applied to the nucleus $^{196}$Pt.

Proton-proton correlations observed in two-proton decay of $^{19}$Mg and $^{16}$Ne

Proton-proton correlations were observed for the two-proton decays of the ground states of $^{19}$Mg and $^{16}$Ne. The trajectories of the respective decay products, $^{17}$Ne+p+p and $^{14}$O+p+p, were measured by using a tracking technique with microstrip detectors. These data were used to reconstruct the angular correlations of fragments projected on planes transverse to the precursor momenta. The measured three-particle correlations reflect a genuine three-body decay mechanism and allowed us to obtain spectroscopic information on the precursors with valence protons in the $sd$ shell.

For that purpose, the general IBM Hamiltonian for the $U(5)-O(6)$ transition line is used and a numerical fit to the different $E(5)-$models energies is performed, later on the obtained wavefunctions are used to calculate B(E2) transition rates. A phenomenon similar to the quasidynamical symmetry is observed.

alpha-particle production in the scattering of 6He by 208Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier

New experimental data from the scattering of 6He+208Pb at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier are presented. The yield of breakup products coming from projectile fragmentation is dominated by a strong group of $α$ particles. The energy and angular distributions of this group have been analyzed and compared with theoretical calculations. This analysis indicates that the $α$ particles emitted at backward angles in this reaction are mainly due to two-neutron transfer to weakly bound states of the final nucleus.

Two-level interacting boson models beyond the mean field

The phase diagram of two-level boson Hamiltonians, including the Interacting Boson Model (IBM), is studied beyond the standard mean field approximation using the Holstein-Primakoff mapping. The limitations of the usual intrinsic state (mean field) formalism concerning finite-size effects are pointed out. The analytic results are compared to numerics obtained from exact diagonalizations. Excitation energies and occupation numbers are studied in different model space regions (Casten triangle for IBM) and especially at the critical points.

Continuous unitary transformations in two-level boson systems

Two-level boson systems displaying a quantum phase transition from a spherical (symmetric) to a deformed (broken) phase are studied. A formalism to diagonalize Hamiltonians with $O(2L+1)$ symmetry for large number of bosons is worked out. Analytical results beyond the simple mean-field treatment are deduced by using the continuous unitary transformations technique. In this scheme, a 1/N expansion for different observables is proposed and allows one to compute the finite-size scaling exponents at the critical point. Analytical and numerical results are compared and reveal the power of the present approach to compute the finite-size corrections in such a context.

A theoretical description of energy spectra and two-neutron separation energies for neutron-rich zirconium isotopes

Very recently the atomic masses of neutron-rich Zr isotopes, from $^{96}$Zr to $^{104}$Zr, have been measured with high precision. Using a schematic Interacting Boson Model (IBM) Hamiltonian, the evolution from spherical to deformed shapes along the chain of Zr isotopes, describing at the same time the excitation energies as well as the two-neutron separation energies, can be rather well reproduced. The interplay between phase transitions and configuration mixing of intruder excitations in this mass region is succinctly addressed.

Finite-size scaling exponents in the interacting boson model

We investigate the finite-size scaling exponents for the critical point at the shape phase transition from U(5) (spherical) to O(6) (deformed $γ$-unstable) dynamical symmetries of the Interacting Boson Model, making use of the Holstein-Primakoff boson expansion and the continuous unitary transformation technique. We compute exactly the leading order correction to the ground state energy, the gap, the expectation value of the $d$-boson number in the ground state and the $E2$ transition probability from the ground state to the first excited state, and determine the corresponding finite-size scaling exponents.

The $β^4$ potential at the U(5)-O(6) critical point of the Interacting Boson Model

Exact numerical results of the interacting boson model Hamiltonian along the integrable line from U(5) to O(6) are obtained by diagonalization within boson seniority subspaces. The matrix Hamiltonian reduces to a block tridiagonal form which can be diagonalized for large number of bosons. We present results for the low energy spectrum and the transition probabilities for systems up to 10000 bosons, which confirm that at the critical point the system is equally well described by the Bohr Hamiltonian with a $β^4$ potential.

Phase Diagram of the Proton-Neutron Interacting Boson Model

We study the phase diagram of the proton--neutron interacting boson model (IBM--2) with special emphasis on the phase transitions leading to triaxial phases. The existence of a new critical point between spherical and triaxial shapes is reported.

The U(5)-O(6) transition in the Interacting Boson Model and the E(5) critical point symmetry

The relation of the recently proposed E(5) critical point symmetry with the interacting boson model is investigated. The large-N limit of the interacting boson model at the critical point in the transition from U(5) to O(6) is obtained by solving the Richardson equations. It is shown explicitly that this algebraic calculation leads to the same results as the solution of the Bohr differential equation with a $β^4$ potential.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the Interacting Boson Model: Integrability, level repulsion and level crossing

We study the quantum phase transition mechanisms that arise in the Interacting Boson Model. We show that the second-order nature of the phase transition from U(5) to O(6) may be attributed to quantum integrability, whereas all the first-order phase transitions of the model are due to level repulsion with one singular point of level crossing. We propose a model Hamiltonian with a true first-order phase transition for finite systems due to level crossings.

Phase transitions and critical points in the rare-earth region

A systematic study of isotope chains in the rare--earth region is presented. For the chains (144-154)Nd, (146-160)Sm, (148-162)Gd, and (150-166)Dy, energy levels, E2 transition rates, and two--neutron separation energies are described by using the most general (up to two--body terms) IBM Hamiltonian. For each isotope chain a general fit is performed in such a way that all parameters but one are kept fixed to describe the whole chain. In this region nuclei evolve from spherical to deformed shapes and a method based on catastrophe theory, in combination with a coherent state analysis to generate the IBM energy surfaces, is used to identify critical phase transition points.

Proton-neutron quadrupole interactions: an effective contribution to the pairing field

We point out that the proton-neutron energy contribution, for low multipoles (in particular for the quadrupole component), effectively renormalizes the strength of the pairing interaction acting amongst identical nucleons filling up a single-j or a set of degenerate many-j shells. We carry out the calculation in lowest-order perturbation theory. We perform a study of this correction in various mass regions. These results may have implications for the use of pairing theory in medium-heavy nuclei and for the study of pairing energy corrections to the liquid drop model when studying nuclear masses.

Nuclear binding energies: Global collective structure and local shell-model correlations

Nuclear binding energies and two-neutron separation energies are analyzed starting from the liquid-drop model and the nuclear shell model in order to describe the global trends of the above observables. We subsequently concentrate on the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and discuss a new method in order to provide a consistent description of both, ground-state and excited-state properties. We address the artefacts that appear when crossing mid-shell using the IBM formulation and perform detailed numerical calculations for nuclei situated in the 50-82 shell. We also concentrate on local deviations from the above global trends in binding energy and two-neutron separation energies that appear in the neutron-deficient Pb region. We address possible effects on the binding energy, caused by mixing of low-lying $0^{+}$ intruder states into the ground state, using configuration mixing in the IBM framework. We also study ground-state properties using a deformed mean-field approach. Detailed comparisons with recent experimental data in the Pb region are amply discussed.
