Topological susceptibility with three flavors of staggered quarks

As one test of the validity of the staggered-fermion fourth-root determinant trick, we examine the suppression of the topological susceptibility of the QCD vacuum in the limit of small quark mass. The suppression is sensitive to the number of light sea quark flavors. Our study is done in the presence of 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks in the improved staggered fermion formulation. Variance-reduction techniques provide better control of statistical errors. New results from staggered chiral perturbation theory account for taste-breaking effects in the low-quark mass behavior of the susceptibility, thereby reducing scaling violations from this source. Measurements over a range of quark masses at two lattice spacings permit a rough continuum extrapolation to remove the remaining lattice artifacts. The results are consistent with chiral perturbation theory with the correct flavor counting.

Results for light pseudoscalars from three-flavor simulations

We compute pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants in partially quenched QCD with three dynamical flavors of improved staggered quarks. Fitting the lattice data to staggered chiral perturbation theory forms and extrapolating in quark mass and lattice spacing, we find: $f_π= 129.5 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.5$ MeV, $f_K = 156.6 \pm 1.0 \pm 3.6$ MeV, and $f_K/f_π= 1.210(4)(13)$. The value for $f_K/f_π$ implies $|V_{us}|=0.2219(26)$. We also obtain $m_u/m_d = 0.43(0)(1)(8)$, or, with more input on electromagnetic effects from the continuum, $m_u/m_d = 0.41(0)(1)(4)$. Using the one-loop perturbative mass renormalization, we determine $m_u$ and $m_d$ in the MSbar scheme.

Light hadrons with improved staggered quarks: approaching the continuum limit

We have extended our program of QCD simulations with an improved Kogut-Susskind quark action to a smaller lattice spacing, approximately 0.09 fm. Also, the simulations with a approximately 0.12 fm have been extended to smaller quark masses. In this paper we describe the new simulations and computations of the static quark potential and light hadron spectrum. These results give information about the remaining dependences on the lattice spacing. We examine the dependence of computed quantities on the spatial size of the lattice, on the numerical precision in the computations, and on the step size used in the numerical integrations. We examine the effects of autocorrelations in "simulation time" on the potential and spectrum. We see effects of decays, or coupling to two-meson states, in the 0++, 1+, and 0- meson propagators, and we make a preliminary mass computation for a radially excited 0- meson.

The Phase Diagram of High Temperature QCD with Three Flavors of Improved Staggered Quarks

We report on progress in our study of high temperature QCD with three flavors of improved staggered quarks. Simulations are being carried out with three degenerate quarks with masses less than or equal to the strange quark mass, $m_s$, and with degenerate up and down quarks with masses in the range $0.1 m_s \leq m_{u,d}\leq 0.6 m_s$, and the strange quark mass fixed near its physical value. For the quark masses studied to date we find rapid crossovers, which sharpen as the quark mass is reduced, rather than bona fide phase transitions.

Pion and kaon physics with improved staggered quarks

We compute pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants using staggered quarks on lattices with three flavors of sea quarks and lattice spacings $\approx 0.12$ fm and $\approx 0.09$ fm. We fit partially quenched results to ``staggered chiral perturbation theory'' formulae, thereby taking into account the effects of taste-symmetry violations. Chiral logarithms are observed. From the fits we calculate $f_π$ and $f_K$, extract Gasser-Leutwyler parameters of the chiral Lagrangian, and (modulo rather large perturbative errors) find the light and strange quark masses.

High-Precision Lattice QCD Confronts Experiment

We argue that high-precision lattice QCD is now possible, for the first time, because of a new improved staggered quark discretization. We compare a wide variety of nonperturbative calculations in QCD with experiment, and find agreement to within statistical and systematic errors of 3% or less. We also present a new determination of alpha_msbar(Mz); we obtain 0.121(3). We discuss the implications of this breakthrough for phenomenology and, in particular, for heavy-quark physics.

The static quark potential in three flavor QCD

We study the effects of dynamical quarks on the static quark potential at distances shorter than those where string breaking is expected. Quenched calculations and calculations with three flavors of dynamical quarks are done on sets of lattices with the lattice spacings matched within about one percent. The effect of the sea quarks on the shape of the potential is clearly visible. We investigate the consequences of these effects in a very crude model, namely solving Schroedinger's equation in the resulting potential.

Lattice Determination of Heavy-Light Decay Constants

We report on the MILC collaboration's calculation of $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$, $f_D$, $f_{D_s}$, and their ratios. Our central values come from the quenched approximation, but the quenching error is estimated from $N_F=2$ dynamical staggered lattices. We use Wilson light valence quarks and Wilson and static heavy quarks. We find, for example, $f_B=157 \pm 11 {}^{+25}_{-9} {}^{+23}_{-0} \MeV$, $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.11 \pm 0.02 {}^{+0.04}_{-0.03} \pm 0.03$, $f_{D_s} = 210 \pm 9 {}^{+25}_{-9} {}^{+17}_{-1} \MeV$ and $f_{B}/f_{D_s} = 0.75 \pm 0.03 {}^{+0.04}_{-0.02} {}^{+0.08}_{-0.00}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic (within the quenched approximation), and systematic (of quenching), respectively.

Light hadron spectrum with Kogut-Susskind quarks

We made an extensive study of the light hadron spectrum using the Wilson gauge action and Kogut-Susskind quarks. Using both dynamical quarks and the quenched approximation, we determine hadron masses for five and four gauge couplings respectively, with at least five quark masses at each coupling. In the continuum limit, we find a significant difference between two flavors of dynamical quarks and the quenched approximation for a range of quark masses.

Local topological and chiral properties of QCD

To elucidate the role played by instantons in chiral symmetry breaking, we explore their properties in full QCD, around the critical temperature. We study in particular spatial correlations between low-lying Dirac eigenmodes and instantons. Our measurements are compared with the predictions of instanton-based models.

Three topics in the Schwinger model

1. We compare Monte Carlo results with analytic predictions for the fermion condensate, in the massive one-flavour Schwinger model. 2. We illustrate on the Schwinger model how to facilitate transitions between topological sectors by a simple reweighting method. 3. We discuss exact, non-perturbative improvement of the gauge sector.

Critical Behavior at the Chiral Phase Transition

Quantum chromodynamics with two zero mass flavors is expected to exhibit a phase transition with O(4) critical behavior. Fixing the universality class is important for phenomenology and for facilitating the extrapolation of simulation data to physical quark mass values. At Lattice '96 the Tsukuba and Bielefeld groups reported results from new simulations with dynamical staggered quarks at $N_t = 4$, which suggested a departure from the expected critical behavior. We report observations of similar deviations and discuss efforts in progress to understand this phenomenon.

Topology of full QCD

We study topological properties of SU(3) gauge theory using improved cooling. In the absence of fermions, we measure a topological susceptibility of $(182(8) MeV)^4$ and an instanton size $\sim 0.6$ fm. In the presence of light staggered fermions and across the chiral transition, the susceptibility drops in a manner consistent with the quenched case, and the instanton size changes little. No significant formation of bound instanton-antiinstanton pairs is observed, in particular not along the Euclidean time direction for $T > T_c$.

Smeared Gauge Fixing

We present a new method of gauge fixing to standard lattice Landau gauge, Max Re Tr $\sum_{μ,x}U_{μ,x}$, in which the link configuration is recursively smeared; these smeared links are then gauge fixed by standard extremization. The resulting gauge transformation is simultaneously applied to the original links. Following this preconditioning, the links are gauge fixed again as usual. This method is free of Gribov copies, and we find that for physical parameters ($β\geq 2$ in SU(2)), it generally results in the gauge fixed configuration with the globally maximal trace. This method is a general technique for finding a unique minimum to global optimization problems.

The equation of state for two flavor QCD at N_t=6

We calculate the two flavor equation of state for QCD on lattices with lattice spacing a=(6T)^{-1} and find that cutoff effects are substantially reduced compared to an earlier study using a=(4T)^{-1}. However, it is likely that significant cutoff effects remain. We fit the lattice data to expected forms of the free energy density for a second order phase transition at zero-quark-mass, which allows us to extrapolate the equation of state to m_q=0 and to extract the speed of sound. We find that the equation of state depends weakly on the quark mass for small quark mass.

Simulating QCD at finite density with static quarks

We study lattice QCD in the limit that the quark mass and chemical potential are simultaneously made large, resulting in a controllable density of quarks which do not move; this is similar in spirit to the quenched approximation for zero density QCD. In this approximation we find that the deconfinement transition seen at zero density becomes a smooth crossover for any nonzero density at which we simulated, and that at low enough temperature chiral symmetry remains broken at all densities.

Aspects of Confinement and Chiral Dynamics in 2-d QED at Finite Temperature

We evaluate the Polyakov loop and string tension at zero and finite temperature in $QED_2.$ Using bozonization the problem is reduced to solving the Schrödinger equation with a particular potential determined by the ground state. In the presence of two sources of opposite charges the vacuum angle parameter $θ$ changes by $2π(q/e)$, independent of the number of flavors. This, in turn, alters the chiral condensate. Particularly, in the one flavor case through a simple computer algorithm, we explore the chiral dynamics of a heavy fermion.
