Bandwidth effects in stimulated Brillouin scattering driven by partially incoherent light

A generalized Wigner-Moyal statistical theory of radiation is used to obtain a general dispersion relation for Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) driven by a broadband radiation field with arbitrary statistics. The monochromatic limit is recovered from our general result, reproducing the classic monochromatic dispersion relation. The behavior of the growth rate of the instability as a simultaneous function of the bandwidth of the pump wave, the intensity of the incident field and the wave number of the scattered wave is further explored by numerically solving the dispersion relation. Our results show that the growth rate of SBS can be reduced by 1/3 for a bandwidth of 0.3 nm, for typical experimental parameters.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy currents on locally disordered graphene

We study the local density of states at and around a substituting impurity and use these results to compute current versus bias characteristic curves of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) experiments done on the surface of graphene. This allow us to detect the presence of substituting impurities on graphene. The case of vacancies is also analyzed. We find that the shape and magnitude of the STM characteristic curves depend on the position of the tip and on the nature of the defect, with the strength of the binging between the impurity and the carbon atoms playing an important role. Also the nature of the last atom of the tip has an influence on the shape of the characteristic curve.

White-light parametric instabilities in plasmas

Parametric instabilities driven by partially coherent radiation in plasmas are described by a generalized statistical Wigner-Moyal set of equations, formally equivalent to the full wave equation, coupled to the plasma fluid equations. A generalized dispersion relation for Stimulated Raman Scattering driven by a partially coherent pump field is derived, revealing a growth rate dependence, with the coherence width $σ$ of the radiation field, scaling with $1/σ$ for backscattering (three-wave process), and with $1/σ^{1/2}$ for direct forward scattering (four-wave process). Our results demonstrate the possibility to control the growth rates of these instabilities by properly using broadband pump radiation fields.

Exact time-dependent correlation functions for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary

As a simple model for single-file diffusion of hard core particles we investigate the one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process. We consider an open semi-infinite system where one end is coupled to an external reservoir of constant density $ρ^\ast$ and which initially is in an non-equilibrium state with bulk density $ρ_0$. We calculate the exact time-dependent two-point density correlation function $C_{k,l}(t)\equiv - $ and the mean and variance of the integrated average net flux of particles $N(t)-N(0)$ that have entered (or left) the system up to time $t$. We find that the boundary region of the semi-infinite relaxing system is in a state similar to the bulk state of a finite stationary system driven by a boundary gradient. The symmetric exclusion model provides a rare example where such behavior can be proved rigorously on the level of equal-time two-point correlation functions. Some implications for the relaxational dynamics of entangled polymers and for single-file diffusion in colloidal systems are discussed.

Non-universal dynamics of staggered non-equilibrium particle systems and Ising chains

Non-universal dynamics is shown to occur in a one-dimensional non-equilibrium system of hard-core particles. The stochastic processes included are pair creation and annihilation (with rates e and e') and symmetric hopping rates which alternate from one bond to the next (Pa, Pb). A dynamical scaling relation between the relaxation time and the correlation length in the steady state is derived in a simple way for the case e' > Pa >> Pb >> e. We find that the dynamical exponent takes the non-universal value z = 2 ln(e'/e)/ln[(Pb e')/(Pa e)]. For the special condition e + e'= Pa + Pb, where the stochastic system is in principle soluble by reduction to a free fermion system, the model is mapped to the Glauber dynamics of an Ising chain with alternating ferromagnetic bonds of values J1 and J2, in contact with a quantum thermal bath. The full time dependence of the space-dependent magnetization and of the equal time spin-spin correlation function are studied by writing the master equation for this system in the quantum Hamiltonian formalism. In particular we obtain the dispersion relations and rigorously confirm the results obtained for the correlation length and for the dynamical exponent.

Branching-annihilating random walks in one dimension: Some exact results

We derive a self-duality relation for a one-dimensional model of branching and annihilating random walkers with an even number of offsprings. With the duality relation and by deriving exact results in some limiting cases involving fast diffusion we obtain new information on the location and nature of the phase transition line between an active stationary state (non-zero density) and an absorbing state (extinction of all particles), thus clarifying some so far open problems. In these limits the transition is mean-field-like, but on the active side of the phase transition line the fluctuation in the number of particles deviates from its mean-field value. We also show that well within the active region of the phase diagram a finite system approaches the absorbing state very slowly on a time scale which diverges exponentially in system size.

The duality relation between Glauber dynamics and the diffusion-annihilation model as a similarity transformation

In this paper we address the relationship between zero temperature Glauber dynamics and the diffusion-annihilation problem in the free fermion case. We show that the well-known duality transformation between the two problems can be formulated as a similarity transformation if one uses appropriate (toroidal) boundary conditions. This allow us to establish and clarify the precise nature of the relationship between the two models. In this way we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between observables and initial states in the two problems. A random initial state in Glauber dynamics is related to a short range correlated state in the annihilation problem. In particular the long-time behaviour of the density in this state is seen to depend on the initial conditions. Hence, we show that the presence of correlations in the initial state determine the dependence of the long time behaviour of the density on the initial conditions, even if such correlations are short-ranged. We also apply a field-theoretical method to the calculation of multi-time correlation functions in this initial state.
