Signatures of New $d$-Wave Vortex Physics in Overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+x}$ Revealed by TF-$μ^+$SR

The spontaneous expulsion of applied magnetic field, the Meissner effect, is a defining feature of superconductors; in Type-II superconductors above the lower critical field, this screening takes the form of a lattice of magnetic flux vortices. Using implanted spin-1/2 positive muons, one can measure the vortex lattice field distribution through the spin precession and deduce key parameters of the superconducting ground state, and thereby fundamental properties of the superconducting pairing. Muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments have indeed revealed much interesting physics in the underdoped cuprates, where superconductivity is closely related to, or coexistent with, disordered or fluctuating magnetic and charge excitations. Such complications should be absent in overdoped cuprates, which are believed to exhibit conventional Fermi liquid behaviour. These first transverse field (TF)-$μ^+$SR experiments on heavily-overdoped single crystals reveal a superfluid density exhibiting a clear inflection point near 0.5$T_c$, with a striking doping-independent scaling. This reflects hitherto unrecognized physics intrinsic to $d$-wave vortices, evidently generic to the cuprates, and may offer fundamentally new insights into their still-mysterious superconductivity.

Detection of precursor charge-density-wave order in 2H-NbSe2 by muSR

We demonstrate the sensitivity of transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) to static charge-density-wave (CDW) order in the bulk of 2H-NbSe2. In the presence of CDW order the quadrupolar interaction of the 93Nb nuclei with the local electric-field gradient is modified, and this in turn affects the magnetic dipolar coupling of the positive muon to these nuclei. For a weak magnetic field applied parallel to the c-axis, we observe a small enhancement of the muon depolarization rate at temperatures below the established CDW phase transition. Aligning the applied field perpendicular to the c-axis, we observe a sensivity to static CDW order in regions of the sample extending up to nearly 3 times the CDW transition temperature. The results suggest that the muon is mobile over the temperature range explored above the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), and becomes trapped in the vicinity of defects.

Magnetic properties of the helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 observed by muSR

We have performed muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 at zero to low magnetic field. The transition from the paramagnetic to helical magnetically ordered phase at zero field is marked by the onset of a coherent oscillation of the zero-field muon spin polarization below a critical temperature Tc. An enhancement of the muon spin precession frequency is observed below T ~ 50K, where anomalous behavior has been observed in bulk transport measurements. The enhanced precession frequency indicates a low-temperature modification of the helical magnetic structure. A Landau free energy analysis suggests that the low-temperature change in the magnetic structure is caused by a structural change, whereas the magnetic order above Tc is the result of an attractive interaction between the ferromagnetic moment induced by the applied field and the magnetic moments of the helical structure. We also suggest a longer periodicity of helicity below T ~ 50K, which can be verified by neutron scattering.

Partially-ordered vortex lattices in the high-field, low-temperature mixed state of quasi two-dimensional organic superconductors

We report the results of high-field, low-temperature MuSR measurements of the quasi two-dimensional organic superconductors \k{appa}-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 and \k{appa}-(ET)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br. The MuSR lineshapes for these compounds indicate the existence of partially-ordered vortex lattice phases in the high magnetic field regime, up to 2.5 T for the former compound and 4 T for the latter compound. The observed sharp loss of order is found to be consistent with a vortex-lattice melting transition that is predicted by numerical simulations of weakly coupled layers of pancake vortices. It is argued that the robustness of the partially-ordered vortex lattice phases could be due to strong flux-line pinning by a dilute ensemble of defects.

Charge segregation model for superconducting correlations in cuprates above $T_c$

We present a theoretical framework for understanding recent transverse field muon spin rotation (TF-$μ$SR) experiments on cuprate superconductors in terms of localized regions of phase-coherent pairing correlations above the bulk superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. The local regions of phase coherence are associated with a tendency toward charge ordering, a phenomenon found recently in hole-doped cuprates. We simulate the appearance of these regions by a conserved order parameter dynamics, and perform self-consistent superconducting calculations using the Bogoliubov-deGennes method. Within this context we explore two possible scenarios: (i) The magnetic field is diamagnetically screened by the sum of varying shielding currents of isolated small-sized superconducting domains. (ii) These domains become increasingly correlated by Josephson coupling as the temperature is lowered and the main response to the applied magnetic field is from the sum of all varying tunneling currents. The results indicate that these two approaches may be used to simulate the TF-$μ$SR data but case (ii) yields better agreement.

Charge order, superconducting correlations, and $μ$SR

The recent discoveries of short-range charge-density wave fluctuations in the normal state of several hole-doped cuprate superconductors constitute a significant addition to the known intrinsic properties of these materials. Besides likely being associated with the normal-state pseudogap, the charge-density wave order presumably influences the build-up of known superconducting correlations as the temperature is lowered toward the superconducting state. As a pure magnetic probe, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) is not directly sensitive to charge order, but may sense its presence via the effect it has on the magnetic dipolar coupling of the muon with the host nuclei at zero or low magnetic field. At higher field where $μ$SR is completely blind to the effects of charge order, experiments have revealed a universal inhomogeneous normal-state response extending to temperatures well above $T_c$. The measured inhomogeneous line broadening has been attributed to regions of superconducting correlations that exhibit varying degrees of fluctuation diamagnetism. Here, the compatibility of these results with other measurements showing charge order correlations or superconducting fluctuations above $T_c$ is discussed.

Zero-Field muSR Search for a Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Breaking Mixed Pairing State in Superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report the results of a zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-muSR) study of superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0.5 < x < 0.9) in search of weak spontaneous internal magnetic fields associated with proposed time-reversal-symmetry breaking mixed pairing states. The measurements were performed on polycrystalline samples, which do not exhibit the mesoscopic phase separation previously observed in single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2. No evidence of spontaneous internal magnetic fields is found in any of the samples at temperatures down to T ~ 0.02 K.

Universal inhomogeneous magnetic-field response in the normal state of cuprate high-Tc superconductors

We report the results of a muon spin rotation (muSR) study of the bulk of Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu2O{8+δ}, as well as pure and Ca-doped YBa2Cu3Oy, which together with prior measurements reveal a universal inhomogeneous magnetic-field response of hole-doped cuprates extending to temperatures far above the critical temperature (Tc). The primary features of our data are incompatible with the spatially inhomogeneous response being dominated by known charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) orders. Instead the normal-state inhomogeneous line broadening is found to scale with the maximum value Tc^max for each cuprate family, indicating it is controlled by the same energy scale as Tc. Since the degree of chemical disorder varies widely among the cuprates we have measured, the observed scaling constitutes evidence for an intrinsic electronic tendency toward inhomogeneity above Tc.

Muon spin rotation studies of niobium for superconducting RF applications

In this work we investigate superconducting properties of niobium samples via application of the muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique. We employ for the first time the muSR technique to study samples that are cutout from large and small grain 1.5 GHz radio frequency (RF) single cell niobium cavities. The RF test of these cavities was accompanied by full temperature mapping to characterize the RF losses in each of the samples. Results of the muSR measurements show that standard cavity surface treatments like mild baking and buffered chemical polishing (BCP) performed on the studied samples affect their surface pinning strength. We find an interesting correlation between high field RF losses and field dependence of the sample magnetic volume fraction measured via muSR. The muSR line width observed in ZF-muSR measurements matches the behavior of Nb samples doped with minute amounts of Ta or N impurities. An upper bound for the upper critical field Hc2 of these cutouts is found.

Curie-like paramagnetism due to incomplete Zhang-Rice singlet formation in La2-xSrxCuO4

In an effort to elucidate the origin of the Curie-like paramagnetism that is generic for heavily-overdoped cuprates, we have performed high transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) measurements of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals over the Sr content range 0.145 < x < 0.33. We show that the x-dependence of the previously observed field-induced broadening of the internal magnetic field distribution above the superconducting transition temperature Tc reflects the presence of two distinct contributions. One of these becomes less pronounced with increasing x and is attributed to diminishing antiferromagnetic correlations. The other grows with increasing x, but decreases above x ~ 0.30, and is associated with the Curie-like term in the bulk magnetic susceptibility. In contrast to the Curie-like term, however, this second contribution to the TF-muSR line width extends back into the underdoped regime. Our findings imply a coexistence of antiferromagnetically correlated and paramagnetic moments, with the latter becoming dominant beyond x ~ 0.185. This suggests that the doped holes do not neutralize all Cu spins via the formation of Zhang-Rice singlets. Moreover, the paramagnetic component of the TF-muSR line width is explained by holes progressively entering the Cu 3d_{x^2-y^2} orbital with doping.

Precision Search for Magnetic Order in the Pseudogap Regime of La2-xSrxCuO4 by Muon Spin Relaxation

We report a high precision search for orbital-like magnetic order in the pseudogap region of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals using zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-muSR). In contrast to previous studies of this kind, the effects of the dipolar and quadrupolar interactions of the muon with nearby nuclei are calculated. ZF-muSR spectra with a high number of counts were also recorded to determine whether a magnetically ordered phase exists in dilute regions of the sample. Despite these efforts, we find no evidence for static magnetic order of any kind in the pseudogap region above the hole-doping concentration p = 0.13.

Direct Search for a Ferromagnetic Phase in a Heavily Overdoped Nonsuperconducting Copper Oxide

The doping of charge carriers into the CuO2 planes of copper oxide Mott insulators causes a gradual destruction of antiferromagnetism and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity. Optimal superconductivity is achieved at a doping concentration p beyond which further increases in doping cause a weakening and eventual disappearance of superconductivity. A potential explanation for this demise is that ferromagnetic fluctuations compete with superconductivity in the overdoped regime. In this case a ferromagnetic phase at very low temperatures is predicted to exist beyond the doping concentration at which superconductivity disappears. Here we report on a direct examination of this scenario in overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 using the technique of muon spin relaxation. We detect the onset of static magnetic moments of electronic origin at low temperature in the heavily overdoped nonsuperconducting region. However, the magnetism does not exist in a commensurate long-range ordered state. Instead it appears as a dilute concentration of static magnetic moments. This finding places severe restrictions on the form of ferromagnetism that may exist in the overdoped regime. Although an extrinsic impurity cannot be absolutely ruled out as the source of the magnetism that does occur, the results presented here lend support to electronic band calculations that predict the occurrence of weak localized ferromagnetism at high doping.

Magnetism and Disorder Effects on muSR Measurements of the Magnetic Penetration Depth in Iron-Based Superconductors

It is shown that attempts to accurately deduce the magnetic penetration depth of overdoped BaFe_{1.82}Co_{0.18}As2 single crystals by transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) are thwarted by field-induced magnetic order and strong vortex-lattice disorder. We explain how substantial deviations from the magnetic field distribution of a nearly perfect vortex lattice by one or both of these factors is also significant for other iron-based superconductors, and this introduces considerable uncertainty in the values of the magnetic penetration depth obtained by TF-muSR.

Damping of dHvA oscillations and vortex-lattice disorder in the peak-effect region of strong type-II superconductors

The phenomenon of magnetic quantum oscillations in the superconducting state poses several questions that still defy satisfactory answers. A key controversial issue concerns the additional damping observed in the vortex state. Here, we show results of μSR, dHvA, and SQUID magnetization measurements on borocarbide superconductors, indicating that a sharp drop observed in the dHvA amplitude just below H_{c2} is correlated with enhanced disorder of the vortex lattice in the peak-effect region, which significantly enhances quasiparticle scattering by the pair potential.

High-field muSR studies of superconducting and magnetic correlations in cuprates above Tc

The advent of high transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-muSR) has led to recent muSR investigations of the magnetic-field response of cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature T_c. Here the results of such experiments on hole-doped cuprates are reviewed. Although these investigations are currently ongoing, it is clear that the effects of high field on the internal magnetic field distribution of these materials is dependent upon a competition between superconductivity and magnetism. In La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 the response to the external field above Tc is dominated by heterogeneous spin magnetism. However, the magnetism that dominates the observed inhomogeneous line broadening below x ~ 0.19 is overwhelmed by the emergence of a completely different kind of magnetism in the heavily overdoped regime. The origin of the magnetism above x ~ 0.19 is currently unknown, but its presence hints at a competition between superconductivity and magnetism that is reminiscent of the underdoped regime. In contrast, the width of the internal field distribution of underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_y above Tc is observed to track Tc and the density of superconducting carriers. This observation suggests that the magnetic response above Tc is not dominated by electronic moments, but rather inhomogeneous fluctuating superconductivity.

Detection of the Unusual Magnetic Orders in the Pseudogap Region of a High-Temperature Superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.6 Crystal by Muon-Spin Relaxation

We present muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on a large YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal in which two kinds of unusual magnetic order have been detected in the pseudogap region by neutron scattering. A comparison is made to measurements on smaller, higher quality YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals. One type of magnetic order is observed in all samples, but does not evolve significantly with hole doping. A second type of unusual magnetic order is observed only in the YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal. This magnetism has an ordered magnetic moment that is quantitatively consistent with the neutron experiments, but is confined to just a small volume of the sample (~ 3%). Our findings do not support theories that ascribe the pseudogap to a state characterized by loop-current order, but instead indicate that dilute impurity phases are the source of the unusual magnetic orders in YBa2Cu3Oy.

Field-induced coupled superconductivity and spin density wave order in the Heavy Fermion compound CeCoIn5

The high field superconducting state in CeCoIn5 has been studied by transverse field muon spin rotation measurements with an applied field parallel to the crystallographic c-axis close to the upper critical field Hc2 = 4.97 T. At magnetic fields >= 4.8 T the muon Knight shift is enhanced and the superconducting transition changes from second order towards first order as predicted for Pauli-limited superconductors. The field and temperature dependence of the transverse muon spin relaxation rate sigma reveal paramagnetic spin fluctuations in the field regime from 2 T < H < 4.8 T. In the normal state close to Hc2 correlated spin fluctuations as described by the self consistent renormalization theory are observed. The results support the formation of a mode-coupled superconducting and antiferromagnetically ordered phase in CeCoIn5 for H directed parallel to the c-axis.

Penetration depth, multiband superconductivity, and absence of muon-induced perturbation in superconducting PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$

Transverse-field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments in the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($T_{c}=1.85$ K) suggest that the superconducting penetration depth $λ(T)$ is temperature-independent at low temperatures, consistent with a gapped quasiparticle excitation spectrum. In contrast, radiofrequency (rf) inductive measurements yield a stronger temperature dependence of $λ(T)$, indicative of point nodes in the gap. This discrepancy appears to be related to the multiband structure of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. Muon Knight shift measurements in PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ suggest that the perturbing effect of the muon charge on the neighboring Pr$^{3+}$ crystalline electric field is negligibly small, and therefore is unlikely to cause the difference between the $μ$SR and rf results.
