Asymptotic Pade Approximant Predictions: up to Five Loops in QCD and SQCD

We use Asymptotic Pade Approximants (APAP's) to predict the four- and five-loop β-functions in QCD and N=1 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD), as well as the quark mass anomalous dimensions in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. We show how the accuracy of our previous β-function predictions at the four-loop level may be further improved by using estimators weighted over negative numbers of flavours (WAPAP's). The accuracy of the improved four-loop results encourages confidence in the new five-loop β-function predictions that we present. However, the WAPAP approach does not provide improved results for the anomalous mass dimension, or for Abelian theories.

Report of the Working Group on `W Mass and QCD' (Phenomenology Workshop on LEP2 Physics, Oxford, April 1997)

The W Mass and QCD Working Group discussed a wide variety of topics relating to present and future measurements of M(W) at LEP2, including QCD backgrounds to W+W- production. Particular attention was focused on experimental issues concerning the direct reconstruction and threshold mass measurements, and on theoretical and experimental issues concerning the four jet final state. This report summarises the main conclusions.

Pursuing the Strange Stop Interpretation of the HERA Large Q^2 data

We explore the possible interpretation of the large-$Q^2$ anomaly reported by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations in terms of stop squark production off a strange quark in the proton via an R-violating interaction. This "strange stop" interpretation is constrained by LEP measurements of the $Z \to e^+ e^-$ decay rate in addition to constraints from the electroweak $ρ$ parameter and CDF and D0 searches for first-generation leptoquarks. We investigate the interplay between these constraints, taking full account of stop mixing effects. We find that if $m_{\tilde t} \le 200$ GeV only relatively small domains of the chargino and neutralino parameters are consistent with these constraints, and explore the extent to which this scenario may be probed further by searches for contact interactions at LEP~2 and experiments with $e^-$ and polarized beams at HERA.

Pursuing interpretations of the HERA large-Q2 data

We explore interpretations of the anomaly observed by H1 and ZEUS at HERA in deep-inelastic e^+ p scattering at very large Q^2. We discuss the possibilities of new effective interactions and the production of a narrow state of mass 200 GeV with leptoquark couplings. We compare these models with the measured Q^2 distributions: for the contact terms, constraints from LEP2 and the Tevatron allow only a few choices of helicity and flavour structure that could roughly fit the HERA data. The data are instead quite consistent with the Q^2 distribution expected from a leptoquark state. We study the production cross sections of such a particle at the Tevatron and at HERA. The absence of a signal at the Tevatron disfavours the likelihood that any such leptoquark decays only into e^+ q. We then focus on the possibility that the leptoquark is a squark with R-violating couplings. In view of the present experimental limits on such couplings, the most likely production channels are e^+d -> scharm_L or perhaps e^+d->stop, with e^+s->stop a more marginal possibility. Possible tests of our preferred model include the absence both of analogous events in e^- p collisions and of charged current events, and the presence of detectable cascade decays whose kinematical signatures we discuss. We also discuss the possible implications for K->pi nu nubar, neutrinoless double-beta decay, the Tevatron and for e^+ e^- ->q qbar and neutralinos at LEP2.

Flavour-Dependent and Basis Independent Measures of R Violation

We construct lepton flavour-dependent and basis-independent measures of R-parity violation in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). We work in the context of exact supersymmetry, neglecting the effects of Higgs vacuum expectation values and soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We devote particular attention to appropriate choices of flavour eigenstates, and to the counting and enumeration of R-violating invariants in two- and three-generation models. We also make an indicative application of our results to derive possible basis-independent cosmological upper bounds on flavour-dependent violation of R parity.

Unification Bounds on the Possible N=2 Supersymmetry Breaking Scale

In this letter, the possible appearance of N=2 supersymmetry at a low energy scale is investigated in the context of unified theories. Introducing mirror particles for all the gauge and matter multiplets of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM), the measured values of sin^2 θ_W and α_3(M_Z) indicate that the N=2 threshold scale M_{S_2} cannot be lower than \sim 10^{14}GeV. If the U(1) normalization coefficient k is treated as a free parameter, M_{S_2} can be as low as 10^9 GeV. On the other hand, if mirror quarks and leptons are absent and a non-standard value for k is used, N=2 supersymmetry breaking could in principle occur at the electroweak scale.

Supersymmetry, Supergravity and R_b revisited in the light of LEP 2

A previous study of supersymmetric models has indicated that they are unlikely to make a large contribution to R_b. We revisit this analysis, taking into account the improved lower limits on sparticle masses provided recently by LEP 2 and the Tevatron, finding that a generic supersymmetric model cannot contribute more than about one-and-a-half current experimental standard deviations to R_b. We then specialize this analysis to minimal supergravity models with universal high-energy boundary conditions, and find a much more stringent upper bound R^{susy}_b < 0.0003. We discuss in detail why such models can only attain values of R^{susy}_b that are considerably smaller even than those obtainable in more general supersymmetric models.

Analysis of LEP Constraints on Supersymmetric Models with a Light Gravitino

We propose an analysis of LEP constraints on radiative neutralino decays into a light gravitino, based on the plane of the Higgs mixing parameter mu and the SU(2) gaugino mass M_2. The preliminary LEP 2W constraints in the (mu, M_2) plane are considerably stronger than for supersymmetric models in which the lightest neutralino is stable. A significant portion of the parameter space in which chargino or selectron decay into a final state containing a light gravitino could provide an interpretation of the CDF ee gamma gamma + E_T,miss event can now excluded by the preliminary LEP 2W data.

Accelerator Constraints on Neutralino Dark Matter

The constraints on neutralino dark matter χobtained from accelerator searches at LEP, the Fermilab Tevatron and elsewhere are reviewed, with particular emphasis on results from LEP 1.5. These imply within the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model that m_χ\ge 21.4 GeV if universality is assumed, and yield for large tanβa significantly stronger bound than is obtained indirectly from Tevatron limits on the gluino mass. We update this analysis with preliminary results from the first LEP 2W run, and also preview the prospects for future sparticle searches at the LHC.

Basis Independent Measures of R-parity Violation

We construct basis-independent expressions that measure the magnitude of $R$-parity breaking due to possible superpotential terms in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, in the absence of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms and spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. We also discuss briefly their application to a consistent treatment of cosmological constraints on $R$-parity violation.

D Branes from Liouville Strings

We develop quantization aspects of our Liouville approach to non-critical strings, proposing a path-integral formulation of a second quantization of string theory, that incorporates naturally the couplings of string sources to background fields. Such couplings are characteristic of macroscopic string solutions and/or $D$-brane theories. Resummation over world-sheet genera in the presence of stringy ($σ$-model) soliton backgrounds, and recoil effects associated with logarithmic operators on the world sheet, play a crucial rôle in inducing such sources as well-defined renormalization-group counterterms. Using our Liouville renormalization group approach, we derive the appropriate second-order equation of motion for the $D$ brane. We discuss within this approach the appearance of open strings, whose ends carry non-trivial Chan-Paton-like quantum numbers related to the $W_\infty$ charges of two-dimensional string black holes.

Distance Measurement and Wave Dispersion in a Liouville-String Approach to Quantum Gravity

Within a Liouville approach to non-critical string theory, we discuss space-time foam effects on the propagation of low-energy particles. We find an induced frequency-dependent dispersion in the propagation of a wave packet, and observe that this would affect the outcome of measurements involving low-energy particles as probes. In particular, the maximum possible order of magnitude of the space-time foam effects would give rise to an error in the measurement of distance comparable to that independently obtained in some recent heuristic quantum-gravity analyses. We also briefly compare these error estimates with the precision of astrophysical measurements.

Can one probe the structure function of the pomeron?

We discuss whether the diffractive structure functions defined by current experiments at HERA are indeed probing the partonic structure function of the pomeron. We observe that the {\it pseudorapidity} cuts commonly employed require that the struck parton in the pomeron be far off mass shell in sizeable regions of parameter space. As a result an interpretation in terms of constituent partons within the pomeron is inadequate. One may nevertheless use a partonic description for the {\it amplitude} for virtual photon-pomeron scattering to compute a diffractive structure function for pseudorapidity gap events. The resulting form may have significant scaling violation.

Searching for Relic Neutralinos using Neutrino Telescopes

Neutrino telescopes of large area offer the possibility of searching for indirect signals of relic neutralinos in the galactic halo, due to annihilations in the Sun or the Earth. Here we investigate the sensitivity, using a supergravity scheme where the soft scalar mass terms are not constrained by universality conditions at the grand unification scale. We first discuss in which regions of the supersymmetric parameter space the neutralino may be considered as a good candidate for cold dark matter. The discovery potential of the search using neutrino telescopes is then compared to that of the direct search for relic neutralinos.

Supersymmetry and R_b in the light of LEP 1.5

We re-examine the possible magnitude of the supersymmetric contribution to $R_b\equivΓ(Z^0\to\bar b b)/Γ(Z^0\to{\rm all})$ in the light of the constraints imposed by the absence of light charginos at LEP~1.5, implementing also other available phenomenological constraints. We find the supersymmetric contribution to be $R^{\rm susy}_b < 0.0017$, and discuss the extent to which this upper bound could be strengthened by future constraints on the chargino and top-squark masses. Such values of $R^{\rm susy}_b$ tend to disfavor a supersymmetry explanation of the apparent $R_b$ discrepancy.

Test of CPT Symmetry and Quantum Mechanics with Experimental data from CPLEAR

We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to $π^+π^-$ and $πeν$ to constrain the CPT--violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system. The obtained upper limits of the CPT--violation parameters are approaching the range suggested by certain ideas concerning quantum gravity.
