Scatttering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles from Ge73

We use a "hybrid" method, mixing variationally-determined triaxial nuclear Slater determinants, to calculate the response of Ge73 to hypothetical dark-matter particles such as neutralinos. The method is a hybrid in that rotational invariance is approximately restored prior to variation and then fully restored before the mixing of intrinsic states. We discuss such features of Ge73 as shape coexistence and triaxiality, and their effects on spin-dependent neutralino cross sections. Our calculations yield a satisfactory quadrupole moment and an accurate magnetic moment in this very complicated nucleus, suggesting that the spin structure and thus the axial--vector response to dark matter particles is modeled well.

A Microscopic T-Violating Optical Potential: Implications for Neutron-Transmission Experiments

We derive a T-violating P-conserving optical potential for neutron-nucleus scattering, starting from a uniquely determined two-body $ρ$-exchange interaction with the same symmetry. We then obtain limits on the T-violating $ρ$-nucleon coupling $\overline{g}_ρ$ from neutron-transmission experiments in $^{165}$Ho. The limits may soon compete with those from measurements of atomic electric-dipole moments.

Capture of Solar and Higher-Energy Neutrinos by Iodine 127

We discuss and improve a recent treatment of the absorption of solar neutrinos by ${}^{127}$I, in connection with a proposed solar neutrino detector. With standard-solar-model fluxes and an in-medium value of -1.0 for the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$, we obtain a ${}^8$B-neutrino cross section of 3.3$\times 10^{-42}$, about 50\% larger than in our previous work, and a ${}^7$Be cross section that is less certain but nevertheless also larger than before. We then apply the improved techniques to higher incoming energies that obtain at the LAMPF beam dump, where an experiment is underway to finalize a calibration of the ${}^{127}$I with electron neutrinos from muon decay. We find that forbidden operators, which play no role in solar-neutrino absorption, contribute nonnegligibly to the LAMPF cross section, and that the preliminary LAMPF mean value is significantly larger than our prediction.

Quasielastic neutrino scattering from oxygen and the atmospheric neutrino problem

We examine several phenomena beyond the scope of Fermi-gas models that affect the quasielastic scattering (from oxygen) of neutrinos in the 0.1 -- 3.0 GeV range. These include Coulomb interactions of outgoing protons and leptons, a realistic finite-volume mean field, and the residual nucleon-nucleon interaction. None of these effects are accurately represented in the Monte Carlo simulations used to predict event rates due to $μ$ and $e$ neutrinos from cosmic-ray collisions in the atmosphere. We nevertheless conclude that the neglected physics cannot account for the anomalous $μ$ to $e$ ratio observed at Kamiokande and IMB, and is unlikely to change absolute event rates by more than 10--15\%. We briefly mention other phenomena, still to be investigated in detail, that may produce larger changes.
