Thermodynamics of Four-Flavour QCD with Improved Staggered Fermions

We have calculated the pressure and energy density in four-flavour QCD using improved fermion and gauge actions. We observe a strong reduction of finite cut-off effects in the high temperature regime, similar to what has been noted before for the SU(3) gauge theory. Calculations have been performed on $16^3\times 4$ and 16^4 lattices for two values of the quark mass, $ma = 0.05$ and 0.1. A calculation of the string tension at zero temperature yields a critical temperature $T_c/\sqrtσ = 0.407 \pm 0.010$ for the smaller quark mass value.

The Pseudo Specific Heat in SU(2) Gauge Theory : Finite Size Dependence and Finite Temperature Effects

We investigate the pseudo specific heat of SU(2) gauge theory near the crossover point on $4^4$ to $16^4$ lattices. Several different methods are used to determine the specific heat. The curious finite size dependence of the peak maximum is explained from the interplay of the crossover phenomenon with the deconfinement transition occurring due to the finite extension of the lattice. We find, that for lattices of size $8^4$ and larger the crossover peak is independent of lattice size at $β_{co}=2.23(2)$ and has a peak height of $C_{V,co}=1.685(10)$. We conclude therefore that the crossover peak is not the result of an ordinary phase transition. Further, the contributions to $C_V$ from different plaquette correlations are calculated. We find, that at the peak and far outside the peak the ratio of contributions from orthogonal and parallel plaquette correlations is different. To estimate the finite temperature influence on symmetric lattices far off the deconfinement transition point we calculate the modulus of the lattice average of the Polyakov loop on these lattices and compare it to predictions from a random walk model.

A Study of Finite Temperature Gauge Theory in (2+1) Dimensions

We determine the critical couplings and the critical exponents of the finite temperature transition in SU(2) and SU(3) pure gauge theory in (2+1) dimensions. We also measure Wilson loops at $T=0$ on a wide range of $β$ values using APE smearing to improve the signal. We extract the string tension $σ$ from a fit to large distances, including a string fluctuation term. With these two entities we calculate $T_c/\sqrtσ$.

QCD Thermodynamics with Improved Actions

The thermodynamics of the SU(3) gauge theory has been analyzed with tree level and tadpole improved Symanzik actions. A comparison with the continuum extrapolated results for the standard Wilson action shows that improved actions lead to a drastic reduction of finite cut-off effects already on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ=4$. Results for the pressure, the critical temperature, surface tension and latent heat are presented. First results for the thermodynamics of four-flavour QCD with an improved staggered action are also presented. They indicate similarly large improvement factors for bulk thermodynamics.

Finite size analysis of the pseudo specific heat in SU(2) gauge theory

We investigate the pseudo specific heat of SU(2) gauge theory near the crossover point on $4^4$ to $16^4$ lattices. Several different methods are used to determine the specific heat. The curious finite size dependence of the peak maximum is explained from the interplay of the crossover phenomenon with the deconfinement transition occurring due to the finite extension of the lattice. In this context we calculate the modulus of the lattice average of the Polyakov loop on symmetric lattices and compare it to the prediction from a random walk model.

Thermodynamics of SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory

The pressure and the energy density of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory are calculated on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ= 4$, 6 and 8 and spatial extent $N_σ=16$ and 32. The results are then extrapolated to the continuum limit. In the investigated temperature range up to five times $T_c$ we observe a $15\%$ deviation from the ideal gas limit. We also present new results for the critical temperature on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ= 8$ and 12. At the corresponding critical couplings the string tension is calculated on $32^4$ lattices to fix the temperature scale. An extrapolation to the continuum limit yields $T_c/\sqrtσ = 0.629(3)$. We furthermore present results on the electric and magnetic condensates as well as the temperature dependence of the spatial string tension. These observables suggest that the temperature dependent running coupling remains large even at $T\simeq 5T_c$. For the spatial string tension we find $\sqrt{σ_s}/T = 0.566(13) g^2(T)$ with $g^2(5T_c) \simeq 1.5$.

Critical behaviour of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. A complete analysis with the $χ^2$-method

We determine the critical point and the ratios $β/ν$ and $γ/ν$ of critical exponents of the deconfinement transition in $SU(2)$ gauge theory by applying the $χ^2$-method to Monte Carlo data of the modulus and the square of the Polyakov loop. With the same technique we find from the Binder cumulant $g_r$ its universal value at the critical point in the thermodynamical limit to $-1.403(16)$ and for the next-to-leading exponent $ω=1\pm0.1$. From the derivatives of the Polyakov loop dependent quantities we estimate then $1/ν$. The result from the derivative of $g_r$ is $1/ν=0.63\pm0.01$, in complete agreement with that of the $3d$ Ising model.

Equation of State for the SU(3) Gauge Theory

Through a detailed investigation of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory at finite temperature on lattices of various size we can control finite lattice cut-off effects in bulk thermodynamic quantities. We calculate the pressure and energy density of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ= 4$, 6 and 8 and spatial extent $N_σ=16$ and 32. The results are extrapolated to the continuum limit. We find a deviation from ideal gas behaviour of (15-20)\%, depending on the quantity, even at temperatures as high as $T\sim 3T_c$. A calculation of the critical temperature on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ= 8$ and 12 and the string tension on $32^4$ lattices at the corresponding critical couplings is performed to fix the temperature scale. An extrapolation to the continuum limit yields $T_c/\sqrtσ = 0.629(3)$.

Scaling Properties of the Energy Density in SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

The lattice data for the energy density of $SU(2)$ gauge theory are calculated with \nop~derivatives of the coupling constants. These derivatives are obtained from two sources : i) a parametrization of the \nop~beta function in accord with the measured critical temperature and $Δβ-$values and ii) a \nop~calculation of the presssure. We then perform a detailed finite size scaling analysis of the energy density near $T_c$. It is shown that at the critical temperature the energy density is scaling as a function of $VT^3$ with the corresponding $3d$ Ising model critical exponents. The value of $ε(T_c)/T^4_c$ in the continuum limit is estimated to be 0.256(23). In the high temperature regime the energy density is approaching its weak coupling limit from below, at $T/T_c \approx 2$ it has reached only about $70\%$ of the limit.

The analysis of Polyakov loop and spin correlators in finite volumes

We derive an analytic expression for point to point correlation functions of the Polyakov loop based on the transfer matrix formalism. The contributions from the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix including and beyond the mass gap are investigated both for the $2d$ Ising model and in finite temperature $SU(2)$ gauge theory. We find that the leading matrix element shows similar scaling properties in both models. Just above the critical point we obtain for $SU(2)$ a Debye screening mass $~μ_D/T\approx4~$, independent of the volume. Sorry, figures are not included and can be sent by ordinary mail.
