Efficient ion blocking in gaseous detectors and its application to gas-avalanche photomultipliers sensitive in the visible-light range

A novel concept for ion blocking in gas-avalanche detectors was developed, comprising cascaded micro-hole electron multipliers with patterned electrodes for ion defocusing. This leads to ion blocking at the 10^{-4} level, in DC mode, in operation conditions adequate for TPCs and for gaseous photomultipliers. The concept was validated in a cascaded visible-sensitive gas avalanche photomultiplier operating at atmospheric pressure of Ar/CH_{4} (95/5) with a bi-alkali photocathode. While in previous works high gain, in excess of 10^{5}, was reached only in a pulse-gated cascaded-GEM gaseous photomultiplier, the present device yielded, for the first time, similar gain in DC mode. We describe shortly the physical processes involved in the charge transport within gaseous photomultipliers and the ion blocking method. We present results of ion backflow fraction and of electron multiplication in cascaded patterned-electrode gaseous photomultiplier with K-Cs-Sb, Na-K-Sb and Cs-Sb visible-sensitive photocathodes, operated in DC mode.

Further progress in ion back-flow reduction with patterned gaseous hole-multipliers

A new idea on electrostatic deviation and capture of back-drifting avalanche-ions in cascaded gaseous hole-multipliers is presented. It involves a flipped reversed-bias Micro-Hole & Strip Plate (F-R-MHSP) element, the strips of which are facing the drift region of the multiplier. The ions, originating from successive multiplication stages, are efficiently deviated and captured by such electrode. Experimental results are provided comparing the ion-blocking capability of the F-R-MHSP to that of the reversed-bias Micro-Hole & Strip Plate (R-MHSP) and the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM). Best ion-blocking results in cascaded hole-multipliers were reached with a detector having the F-R-MHSP as the first multiplication element. A three-element F-R-MHSP/GEM/MHSP cascaded multiplier operated in atmospheric-pressure Ar/CH4 (95/5), at total gain of ~10^{5}, yielded ion back-flow fractions of 3*10^{-4} and 1.5*10^{-4}, at drift fields of 0.5 and 0.2 kV/cm, respectively. We describe the F-R-MHSP concept and the relevance of the obtained ion back-flow fractions to various applications; further ideas are also discussed.

Secondary Scintillation Yield in Pure Xenon

The xenon secondary scintillation yield was studied as a function of the electric field in the scintillation region, in a gas proportional scintillation counter operated at room temperature. A large area avalanche photodiode was used for the readout of the VUV secondary scintillation produced in the gas, together with the 5.9 keV x-rays directly absorbed in the photodiode. The latter was used as a reference for the determination of the number of charge carriers produced by the scintillation pulse and, thus, the number of VUV photons impinging the photodiode. A value of 140 photons/kV was obtained for the scintillation amplification parameter. The attained results are in good agreement with those predicted, for room temperature, by Monte Carlo simulation and Boltzmann calculations, as well as with those obtained for saturated xenon vapour, at cryogenic temperatures, and are about a factor of two higher than former results measured at room temperature.

Characterization of large area avalanche photodiodes in X-ray and VUV-light detection

The present manuscript summarizes novel studies on the application of large area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) to the detection of X-rays and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light. The operational characteristics of four different LAAPDs manufactured by Advanced Photonix Inc., with active areas of 80 and 200 mm^2 were investigated for X-ray detection at room temperature. The best energy resolution was found to be in the 10-18% range for 5.9 keV X-rays. The LAAPD, being compact, simple to operate and with high counting rate capability (up to about 10^5/s), proved to be useful in several applications, such as low-energy X-ray detection, where they can reach better performance than proportional counters. Since X-rays are used as reference in light measurements, the gain non-linearity between 5.9 keV X-rays and light pulses was investigated. The gain ratio between X-rays and VUV light decreases with gain, reaching 10 and 6% variations for VUV light produced in argon (~128 nm) and xenon (~172 nm), respectively, for a gain 200, while for visible light (~635 nm) the variation is lower than 1%. The effect of temperature on the LAAPD performance was investigated. Relative gain variations of about -5% per Celsius degree were observed for the highest gains. The excess noise factor was found to be independent on temperature, being between 1.8 and 2.3 for gains from 50 to 300. The energy resolution is better for decreasing temperatures due mainly to the dark current. LAAPDs were tested under intense magnetic fields up to 5 T, being insensitive when used in X-ray and visible-light detection, while for VUV light a significant amplitude reduction was observed at 5 T.

Muonic hydrogen cascade time and lifetime of the short-lived $2S$ state

Metastable ${2S}$ muonic-hydrogen atoms undergo collisional ${2S}$-quenching, with rates which depend strongly on whether the $μp$ kinetic energy is above or below the ${2S}\to {2P}$ energy threshold. Above threshold, collisional ${2S} \to {2P}$ excitation followed by fast radiative ${2P} \to {1S}$ deexcitation is allowed. The corresponding short-lived $μp ({2S})$ component was measured at 0.6 hPa $\mathrm{H}_2$ room temperature gas pressure, with lifetime $τ_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 165 ^{+38}_{-29}$ ns (i.e., $λ_{2S}^\mathrm{quench} = 7.9 ^{+1.8}_{-1.6} \times 10^{12} \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ at liquid-hydrogen density) and population $ε_{2S}^\mathrm{short} = 1.70^{+0.80}_{-0.56}$ % (per $μp$ atom). In addition, a value of the $μp$ cascade time, $T_\mathrm{cas}^{μp} = (37\pm5)$ ns, was found.

Advances in ion back-flow reduction in cascaded gaseous electron multipliers incorporating R-MHSP elements

A new concept is presented for the reduction of ion back-flow in GEM-based cascaded gaseous electron multipliers, by incorporating Micro-Hole & Strip Plate (MHSP) elements operating in reversed-bias mode (R-MHSP). About an order of magnitude reduction in ion back-flow is achieved by diverting back-drifting ions from their original path. A R-MHSP/2GEM/MHSP cascaded multiplier operated at total gain of ~1.5*10^5 yielded ion back-flow fractions of 0.0015 and 0.0004, at drift fields of 0.5 and 0.1 kV/cm, respectively. A 2R-MHSP/MHSP cascaded multiplier operated at a total gain of ~10^5, yielded an ion back-flow fraction of 0.003. We discuss the concept for trapping back-flowing ions in these cascaded multipliers and the relevance to gaseous photomultiplier and TPC applications; directions for further future developments are outlined.

The Photon-Assisted Cascaded Electron Multiplier: a Concept for Potential Avalanche-Ion Blocking

We present a Photon-Assisted Cascaded Electron Multipliers (PACEM) which has a potential for ion back-flow blocking in gaseous radiation detectors: the avalanche from a first multiplication stage propagates to the successive one via its photons, which in turn induce photoelectron emission from a photocathode deposited on the second multiplier stage; the multiplication process may further continue via electron-avalanche propagation. The photon-mediated stage allows, by a proper choice of geometry and fields, complete blocking of the ion back-flow into the first element; thus, only ions from the latter will flow back to the drift region. The PACEM concept was validated in a double-MHSP (Micro-Hole & Strip Plate) cascaded multiplier operated in xenon, where the intermediate scintillation stage provided optical gain of ~60. The double-MHSP detector had a total gain above 10^4 and energy resolution of 18% FWHM for 5.9 keV x-rays.

Operation of MHSP multipliers in high pressure pure noble-gas

We report on the performance of a Micro-Hole & Strip Plate (MHSP) electron multiplier operating in pure Xe, Kr, Ar and Ne at the pressure range of 1 to 6 bar. The maximal gains at 1 bar Xe and Kr are 50000 and 100000, respectively; they drop by about one order of magnitude at 2 bar and by almost another order of magnitude at 5-6 bar; they reach gains of 500 and 4000 at 5 bar in Xe and Kr, respectively. In Ar, the gain varies very little with pressure, being 3000-9000; in Ne the maximum attainable gain, about 100000, is pressure independent above 2 bar. The results are compared with that of single- and triple-GEM multipliers operated in similar conditions. Potential applications are in hard X-ray imaging and in cryogenic radiation detectors.

MHSP in reversed-biased operation mode for ion blocking in gas-avalanche multipliers

We present recent results on the operation of gas-avalanche detectors comprising a cascade of gas electron multipliers (GEMs) and Micro-Hole and Strip Plates (MHSPs) multiplier operated in reversed-bias (R-MHSP) mode. The operation mechanism of the R-MHSP is explained and its potential contribution to ion-backflow (IBF) reduction is demonstrated. IBF values of 4E-3 were obtained in cascaded R-MHSP and GEM multipliers at gains of about 1E+4, though at the expense of reduced effective gain in the first R- MHSP multiplier in the cascade.

Ion-induced effects in GEM & GEM/MHSP gaseous photomultipliers for the UV and the visible spectral range

We report on the progress in the study of cascaded GEM and GEM/MHSP gas avalanche photomultipliers operating at atmospheric pressure, with CsI and bialkali photocathodes. They have single-photon sensitivity, ns time resolution and good localization properties. We summarize operational aspects and results, with the highlight of a high-gain stable gated operation of a visible-light device. Of particular importance are the results of a recent ion-backflow reduction study in different cascaded multipliers, affecting the detector's stability and the photocathode's liftime. We report on the significant progress in ion-blocking and provide first results on bialkali-photocathode aging under gas multiplication.

Planar LAAPDs: Temperature Dependence, Performance, and Application in Low Energy X-ray Spectroscopy

An experiment measuring the 2S Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen mup is being performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. It requires small and compact detectors for 1.9 keV x rays (2P-1S transition) with an energy resolution around 25% at 2 keV, a time resolution better than 100 ns, a large solid angle coverage, and insensitivity to a 5 T magnetic field. We have chosen Large Area Avalanche Photodiodes (LAAPDs) from Radiation Monitoring Devices as x-ray detectors, and they were used during the last data taking period in 2003. For x-ray spectroscopy applications, these LAAPDs have to be cooled in order to suppress the dark current noise, hence, a series of tests were performed to choose the optimal operation temperature. Specifically, the temperature dependence of gain, energy resolution, dark current, excess noise factor, and detector response linearity was studied. Finally, details of the LAAPDs application in the muonic hydrogen experiment as well as their response to alpha particles are presented.

Recent Investigations of Cascaded GEM and MHSP detectors

We present results from our recent investigations on detectors comprising cascaded gas electron multipliers (GEM) and cascaded GEMs with micro-hole and strip (MHSP) electrodes. We discuss the factors governing the operation of these fast radiation imaging detectors, that have single-charge sensitivity. The issue of ion-backflow and ion-induced secondary effects is discussed in some detail, presenting ways for its reduction and suppression. Applications are presented in the fields of photon imaging in the UV-to-visible spectral range as well as x-ray and neutron imaging.
