Versatile Atomic Magnetometry Assisted by Bayesian Inference

Quantum sensors typically translate external fields into a periodic response whose frequency is then determined by analyses performed in Fourier space. This allows for a linear inference of the parameters that characterize external signals. In practice, however, quantum sensors are able to detect fields only in a narrow range of amplitudes and frequencies. A departure from this range, as well as the presence of significant noise sources and short detection times, lead to a loss of the linear relationship between the response of the sensor and the target field, thus limiting the working regime of the sensor. Here we address these challenges by means of a Bayesian inference approach that is tolerant to strong deviations from desired periodic responses of the sensor and is able to provide reliable estimates even with a very limited number of measurements. We demonstrate our method for an $^{171}$Yb$^{+}$ trapped-ion quantum sensor but stress the general applicability of this approach to different systems.

Soft Quantum Control for Highly Selective Interactions among Joint Quantum Systems

We propose a quantum control scheme aimed at interacting systems that gives rise to highly selective coupling among their near-to-resonance constituents. Our protocol implements temporal control of the interaction strength, switching it on and off again adiabatically. This soft temporal modulation significantly suppresses off-resonant contributions in the interactions. Among the applications of our method we show that it allows us to perform an efficient rotating-wave approximation in a wide parameter regime, the elimination of side peaks in quantum sensing experiments, and selective high-fidelity entanglement gates on nuclear spins with close frequencies. We apply our theory to nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond and demonstrate the possibility for the detection of weak electron-nuclear coupling under the presence of strong perturbations.

Pulse-phase control for spectral disambiguation in quantum sensing protocols

We present a method to identify spurious signals generated by finite-width pulses in quantum sensing experiments and apply it to recently proposed dynamical decoupling sequences for accurate spectral interpretation. We first study the origin of these fake resonances and quantify their behavior in a situation that involves the measurement of a classical magnetic field. Here we show that a change of the initial phase of the sensor or, equivalently, of the decoupling pulses leads to oscillations in the spurious signal intensity while the real resonances remain intact. Finally we extend our results to the quantum regime for the unambiguous detection of remote nuclear spins by utilization of a nitrogen vacancy sensor in diamond.

Robust Dynamical Decoupling Sequences for Individual Nuclear Spin Addressing

We propose the use of non-equally spaced decoupling pulses for high-resolution selective addressing of nuclear spins by a quantum sensor. The analytical model of the basic operating principle is supplemented by detailed numerical studies that demonstrate the high degree of selectivity and the robustness against static and dynamic control field errors of this scheme. We exemplify our protocol with an NV center-based sensor to demonstrate that it enables the identification of individual nuclear spins that form part of a large spin ensemble.
