Integrable models of inflation beyond slow-roll

We propose a novel analytic approach to the study of multi-component FLRW cosmologies and their perturbations. The dynamics is triggered by a single scalar field with a scalar potential codifying the energy density and pressure of the multi-component fluid. This description unifies standard Big Bang cosmologies, models of inflation and dark energy under a unique framework. The key to integrability is to express the scalar potential in terms of the Hubble function $H(ϕ)$ that plays the role of a fake superpotential, turning the dynamics into a first order problem, that may be analytically solved in a suitable time coordinate. In this framework, we propose integrable inflationary models with similar properties to the ones analysed in the literature and compatible with observations. Finally, we study scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations in each model by integrating Mukhanov-Sasaki equations via numerical and (semi-)analytic techniques. This allow us to compute the power spectrum, the spectral indices and the tensor-to-scalar ratio beyond the slow-roll approximation and compare our general results {against} the currently available observations and the theoretical predictions based on the slow-roll approximation.

On the D(-1)/D7-brane systems

We study non-perturbative effects in supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories in eight dimensions realized by means of D(-1)/D7-brane systems with non-trivial world-volume fluxes turned on. Using an explicit string construction in terms of vertex operators, we derive the action for the open strings ending on the D(-1)-branes and exhibit its BRST structure. The space of vacua for these open strings is shown to be in correspondence with the moduli space of generalized ADHM gauge connections which trigger the non-perturbative corrections in the eight-dimensional theory. These corrections are computed via localization and turn out to depend on the curved background used to localize the integrals on the instanton moduli space, and vanish in flat space. Finally, we show that for specific choices of the background the instanton partition functions reduce to weighted sums of the solid partitions of the integers.

The chiral ring of gauge theories in eight dimensions

We study the non-perturbative corrections generated by exotic instantons in U(N) gauge theories in eight and four dimensions. As it was shown previously, the eight-dimensional prepotential can be resummed using a plethystic formula showing only a dependence from the center of mass and from a U(1) gauge factor. On the contrary, chiral correlators in eight and four dimensions display a non-trivial dependence from the full gauge group. Furthermore the resolvent, the generating function for the eight and four dimensional correlators, can be written in a compact form both in the eight and four dimensional cases.

Two-point correlators in non-conformal $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories

We study the two-point correlation functions of chiral/anti-chiral operators in $N=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories on $R^4$ with gauge group SU(N) and $N_f$ massless hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. We compute them in perturbation theory, using dimensional regularization up to two loops, and show that field-theory observables built out of dimensionless ratios of two-point renormalized correlators on $R^4$ are in perfect agreement with the same quantities computed using localization on the four-sphere, even in the non-conformal case $N_f\not=2N$.

Probing Fuzzballs with Particles, Waves and Strings

We probe D1D5 micro-state geometries with massless particles, waves and strings. To this end, we study geodetic motion, Klein-Gordon equation and string scattering in the resulting gravitational background. Due to the reduced rotational symmetry, even in the simple case of a circular fuzzball, the system cannot be integrated elementarily. Yet, for motion in the plane of the string profile or in the orthogonal plane to it, one can compute the deflection angle or the phase shift and identify the critical impact parameter, at which even a massless probe is captured by the fuzzball if its internal momentum is properly tuned. We find agreement among the three approaches, thus giving further support to the fuzzball proposal at the dynamical level.

Two-point Correlators in N=2 Gauge Theories

We consider two-point correlators in SU(N) gauge theories on R4 with N=2 supersymmetry and Nf massless hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Using localization on S4, we compute the leading perturbative corrections to the two-point functions of chiral/anti-chiral operators made of scalar fields. The results are compared at two and three loops against direct field theory computations for some special operators whose correlators remain finite in perturbation theory at the specific loop order. In the conformal case, the match is shown up to two loops for a generic choice of operators and for arbitrary N.

Resumming instantons in N=2* theories with arbitrary gauge groups

We discuss the modular anomaly equation satisfied by the the prepotential of 4-dimensional N=2* theories and show that its validity is related to S-duality. The recursion relations that follow from the modular anomaly equation allow one to write the prepotential in terms of (quasi)-modular forms, thus resumming the instanton contributions. These results can be checked against the microscopic multi-instanton calculus in the case of classical algebras, but are valid also for the exceptional E6, E7, E8, F4 and G2 algebras, where direct computations are not available.

S-duality and the prepotential in N=2* theories (I): the ADE algebras

The prepotential of N=2* supersymmetric theories with unitary gauge groups in an Omega-background satisfies a modular anomaly equation that can be recursively solved order by order in an expansion for small mass. By requiring that S-duality acts on the prepotential as a Fourier transform we generalise this result to N=2* theories with gauge algebras of the D and E type and show that their prepotentials can be written in terms of quasi-modular forms of SL(2,Z). The results are checked against microscopic multi-instanton calculus based on localization for the A and D series and reproduce the known 1-instanton prepotential of the pure N=2 theories for any gauge group of ADE type. Our results can also be used to obtain the multi-instanton terms in the exceptional theories for which the microscopic instanton calculus and the ADHM construction are not available.

S-duality and the prepotential in N=2* theories (II): the non-simply laced algebras

We derive a modular anomaly equation satisfied by the prepotential of the N=2* supersymmetric theories with non-simply laced gauge algebras, including the classical B and C infinite series and the exceptional F4 and G2 cases. This equation determines the exact prepotential recursively in an expansion for small mass in terms of quasi-modular forms of the S-duality group. We also discuss the behaviour of these theories under S-duality and show that the prepotential of the SO(2r+1) theory is mapped to that of the Sp(2r) theory and viceversa, while the exceptional F4 and G2 theories are mapped into themselves (up to a rotation of the roots) in analogy with what happens for the N=4 supersymmetric theories. These results extend the analysis for the simply laced groups presented in a companion paper.

Wilson Loops and Chiral Correlators on Squashed Sphere

We study chiral deformations of ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories obtained by turning on $τ_J \,{\rm tr} \, Φ^J$ interactions with $Φ$ the ${\cal N}=2$ superfield. Using localization, we compute the deformed gauge theory partition function $Z(\vecτ|q)$ and the expectation value of circular Wilson loops $W$ on a squashed four-sphere. In the case of the deformed ${\cal N}=4$ theory, exact formulas for $Z$ and $W$ are derived in terms of an underlying $U(N)$ interacting matrix model replacing the free Gaussian model describing the ${\cal N}=4$ theory. Using the AGT correspondence, the $τ_J$-deformations are related to the insertions of commuting integrals of motion in the four-point CFT correlator and chiral correlators are expressed as $τ$-derivatives of the gauge theory partition function on a finite $Ω$-background. In the so called Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, the entire ring of chiral relations is extracted from the $ε$-deformed Seiberg-Witten curve. As a byproduct of our analysis we show that $SU(2)$ gauge theories on rational $Ω$-backgrounds are dual to CFT minimal models.

Modular anomaly equations in N=2* theories and their large-N limit

We propose a modular anomaly equation for the prepotential of the N=2* super Yang-Mills theory on R^4 with gauge group U(N) in the presence of an Omega-background. We then study the behaviour of the prepotential in a large-N limit, in which N goes to infinity with the gauge coupling constant kept fixed. In this regime instantons are not suppressed. We focus on two representative choices of gauge theory vacua, where the vacuum expectation values of the scalar fields are distributed either homogeneously or according to the Wigner semi-circle law. In both cases we derive an all-instanton exact formula for the prepotential. As an application, we show that the gauge theory partition function on S^4 at large N localises around a Wigner distribution for the vacuum expectation values leading to a very simple expression in which the instanton contribution becomes independent of the coupling constant.

Non-perturbative gauge/gravity correspondence in N=2 theories

We derive the exact supergravity profile for the twisted scalar field emitted by a system of fractional D3 branes at a Z2 orbifold singularity supporting N=2 quiver gauge theories with unitary groups and bifundamental matter. At the perturbative level this twisted field is "dual" to the gauge coupling but it is corrected non-perturbatively by an infinite tower of fractional D-instantons. The explicit microscopic description allows to derive the gravity profile from disk amplitudes computing the emission rate of the twisted scalar field in terms of chiral correlators in the dual gauge theory. We compute these quantum correlators using multi-instanton localization techniques and/or Seiberg-Witten analysis. Finally, we discuss a non-perturbative relation between the twisted scalar and the effective coupling of the gauge theory for some simple choices of the brane set ups.

Multi instanton tests of holography

Gauge theories living on stacks of D7-branes are holographically related to IIB gravitational backgrounds with a varying axion-dilaton field (F-theory). The axion-dilaton field is generated by D7, O7 and D-instanton sources and can be written in terms of the chiral correlators of the eight dimensional gauge theory living on the D7-branes. Using localization techniques, we prove that the same correlators determine the gauge coupling of the four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theories living on the elementary D3-brane which probes the F-theory geometries.

Gauge theories on Omega-backgrounds from non commutative Seiberg-Witten curves

We study the dynamics of a N=2 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with fundamental or adjoint matter in presence of a non trivial Omega-background along a two dimensional plane. The prepotential and chiral correlators of the gauge theory can be obtained, via a saddle point analysis, from an equation which can be viewed as a non commutative version of the "standard" Seiberg and Witten curve.

An overview of Ciao and its design philosophy

We provide an overall description of the Ciao multiparadigm programming system emphasizing some of the novel aspects and motivations behind its design and implementation. An important aspect of Ciao is that, in addition to supporting logic programming (and, in particular, Prolog), it provides the programmer with a large number of useful features from different programming paradigms and styles, and that the use of each of these features (including those of Prolog) can be turned on and off at will for each program module. Thus, a given module may be using, e.g., higher order functions and constraints, while another module may be using assignment, predicates, Prolog meta-programming, and concurrency. Furthermore, the language is designed to be extensible in a simple and modular way. Another important aspect of Ciao is its programming environment, which provides a powerful preprocessor (with an associated assertion language) capable of statically finding non-trivial bugs, verifying that programs comply with specifications, and performing many types of optimizations (including automatic parallelization). Such optimizations produce code that is highly competitive with other dynamic languages or, with the (experimental) optimizing compiler, even that of static languages, all while retaining the flexibility and interactive development of a dynamic language. This compilation architecture supports modularity and separate compilation throughout. The environment also includes a powerful auto-documenter and a unit testing framework, both closely integrated with the assertion system. The paper provides an informal overview of the language and program development environment. It aims at illustrating the design philosophy rather than at being exhaustive, which would be impossible in a single journal paper, pointing instead to previous Ciao literature.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking in Intersecting Brane Models

In this paper we study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in absence of gravity with the matter content of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The hidden sector of the theory is a strongly coupled gauge theory, realized in terms of microscopic variables which condensate to form mesons. The supersymmetry breaking scalar potential combines F, D terms with instanton generated interactions in the Higgs-mesons sector. We show that for a large region in parameter space the vacuum breaks in addition to supersymmetry also electroweak gauge symmetry. We furthermore present local D-brane configurations that realize these supersymmetry breaking patterns.

Non-perturbative effective interactions from fluxes

Motivated by possible implications on the problem of moduli stabilization and other phenomenological aspects, we study D-brane instanton effects in flux compactifications. We focus on a local model and compute non-perturbative interactions generated by gauge and stringy instantons in a N = 1 quiver theory with gauge group U(N_0) x U(N_1) and matter in the bifundamentals. This model is engineered with fractional D3-branes at a C^3/(Z_2 x Z_2) singularity, and its non-perturbative sectors are described by introducing fractional D-instantons. We find a rich variety of instanton-generated F- and D-term interactions, ranging from superpotentials and Beasley-Witten like multi-fermion terms to non-supersymmetric flux-induced instanton interactions.

Intersecting Attractors

We apply the entropy formalism to the study of the near-horizon geometry of extremal black p-brane intersections in D>5 dimensional supergravities. The scalar flow towards the horizon is described in terms an effective potential given by the superposition of the kinetic energies of all the forms under which the brane is charged. At the horizon active scalars get fixed to the minima of the effective potential and the entropy function is given in terms of U-duality invariants built entirely out of the black p-brane charges. The resulting entropy function reproduces the central charges of the dual boundary CFT and gives rise to a Bekenstein-Hawking like area law. The results are illustrated in the case of black holes and black string intersections in D=6, 7, 8 supergravities where the effective potentials, attractor equations, moduli spaces and entropy/central charges are worked out in full detail.
