Bivariate Rician shadowed fading model

In this paper we present a bivariate Rician shadowed fading model where the shadowing is assumed to follow a Nakagami-$m$ distribution. We derive exact expressions involving a single integral for both the joint probability density function (PDF) and the joint cumulative distribution function (CDF) and we also derive an exact closed-form expression for the moment generating function (MGF). As a direct consequence we obtain a closed-form expression for the power correlation coefficient between Rician shadowed variables as a function of the correlation coefficient between the underlying variables of the model. Additionally, in the particular case of integer $m$ we show that the PDF can be expressed in closed-form in terms of a sum of m Meijer G-functions of two variables. Results are applied to analyze the outage probability (OT) of a dual-branch selection combiner (SC) in correlated Rician shadowed fading and the evaluation of the level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade duration (AFD) of a sampled Rician shadowed fading envelope.

On the Calculation of the Incomplete MGF with Applications to Wireless Communications

The incomplete moment generating function (IMGF) has paramount relevance in communication theory, since it appears in a plethora of scenarios when analyzing the performance of communication systems. We here present a general method for calculating the IMGF of any arbitrary fading distribution. Then, we provide exact closed-form expressions for the IMGF of the very general κ-μ shadowed fading model, which includes the popular κ-μ, η-μ, Rician shadowed and other classical models as particular cases. We illustrate the practical applicability of this result by analyzing several scenarios of interest in wireless communications: (1) Physical layer security in the presence of an eavesdropper, (2) Outage probability analysis with interference and background noise, (3) Channel capacity with side information at the transmitter and the receiver, and (4) Average bit-error rate with adaptive modulation, when the fading on the desired link can be modeled by any of the aforementioned distributions.

Statistical characterization of kappa-mu shadowed fading

This paper investigates a natural generalization of the kappa-mu fading channel in which the line-of-sight (LOS) component is subject to shadowing. This fading distribution has a clear physical interpretation, good analytical properties and unifies the one-side Gaussian, Rayleigh, Nakagami-m, Ricean, kappa-mu and Ricean shadowed fading distributions. The three basic statistical characterizations, i.e. probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF) and moment generating function (MGF), of the kappa-mu shadowed distribution are obtained in closed-form. Then, it is also shown that the sum and maximum distributions of independent but arbitrarily distributed kappa-mu shadowed variates can be expressed in closed-form. This set of new statistical results is finally applied to the performance analysis of several wireless communication systems.

Connections between the Generalized Marcum Q-Function and a class of Hypergeometric Functions

This paper presents a new connection between the generalized Marcum-Q function and the confluent hypergeometric function of two variables, phi3. This result is then applied to the closed-form characterization of the bivariate Nakagami-m distribution and of the distribution of the minimum eigenvalue of correlated non-central Wishart matrices, both important in communication theory. New expressions for the corresponding cumulative distributions are obtained and a number of communication-theoretic problems involving them are pointed out.

On the Bivariate Nakagami-$m$ Cumulative Distribution Function: Closed-form Expression and Applications

In this paper, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the bivariate Nakagami-$m$ cumulative distribution function (CDF) with positive integer fading severity index $m$ in terms of a class of hypergeometric functions. Particularly, we show that the bivariate Nakagami-$m$ CDF can be expressed as a finite sum of elementary functions and bivariate confluent hypergeometric $Φ_3$ functions. Direct applications which arise from the proposed closed-form expression are the outage probability (OP) analysis of a dual-branch selection combiner in correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading, or the calculation of the level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade duration (AFD) of a sampled Nakagami-$m$ fading envelope.

Ricean Shadowed Statistical Characterization of Shallow Water Acoustic Channels for Wireless Communications

In this letter, the statistical behaviour of the shallow water acoustic channel for wireless communications is shown to be well characterized by the Ricean shadowed distribution, which has never been proposed for communication purposes on this type of channel. This characterization is clearly motivated from statistical and physical perspectives and has both theoretical and practical advantages compared to previously proposed models.
