Measurements of the mass and width of the eta_c using psi' -> gamma eta_c

The mass and width of the lowest lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the eta_c, are measured using a data sample of 1.06x10^8 psi' decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates interference between the signal reaction, psi' -> gamma eta_c, and a non-resonant radiative background to successfully describe the line shape of the eta_c. We measure the eta_c mass to be 2984.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.6 MeV/c^2 and the total width to be 32.0 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

First observation of the M1 transition $ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)$

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(2S)\to γη_c(2S) with η_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 Kπand K^+K^-π^0 gave an η_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar K π), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.

Two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M $ψ^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and $Γ(χ_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $λ=0$ and helicity $λ=2$ components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$.

First observation of $η(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)π^0$

The decays $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^+π^-π^0$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^0π^0π^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $η(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)π^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $η'$ are also measured precisely.

Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.

Multiband Emission from Pulsar Wind Nebulae: A Possible Injection Spectrum

A recent research shows that particles with a spectrum of a relativistic Maxwellian plus a high-energy tail can be accelerated by relativistic collisionless shocks. We investigate the possibility of the high-energy particles with this new spectrum injected in pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) from the terminate shock based on the study of multiwavelength emission from PWNe.} {The dynamics of a supernova remnant (SNR) and multiband nonthermal emission from the PWN inside the remnant are investigated using a dynamical model with electrons/positrons injected with the new spectrum. In this model, the dynamical and radiative evolution of a pulsar wind nebula in a non-radiative supernova remnant can be self-consistently described.} {This model is applied to the three composite SNRs, G0.9+0.1, MSH 15-52, G338.3-0.0, and the multiband observed emission from the three PWNe can be well reproduced.} {Our studies on the three remnant provide evidence for the new spectrum of the particles, which are accelerated by the terminate shock, injected into a PWN.

A Revisit of the Two-Pole Caustic Model for GeV Light Curves of Gamma-Ray Pulsars

The GeV light curve of a pulsar is an important probe to detect acceleration regions in its magnetosphere. Motivated by the recent reports on the observations of pulsars by {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT), we restudy the two-pole caustic model and revise it to investigate the properties of the light curves in the GeV band. In the revised model, although acceleration gaps can extend from the star surface to the light cylinder along near the last open field lines, the extension of the gaps along the azimuthal direction is limited because of photon-photon pair production process. In such gaps, high-energy photons are emitted uniformly and tangentially to the field lines but cannot be efficiently produced along these field lines where the distances to the null charge surface are larger than $\sim0.9$ times of the distance of the light cylinder, and the effective azimuth extension of the gaps is about $230^\circ$. The model is applied to the four pulsars Vela, PSR J1028-5819, PSR J0205+6449, and PSR J2021+3651 whose light curves obtained with {\it Fermi} have been recently released. The model is successful in reproducing the general feature of the light curves for the four pulsars, and the radial distances of the radio pulse for the four pulsars are estimated.

Novel Methods to Create Multielectron Bubbles in Superfluid Helium

An equilibrium multielectron bubble in liquid helium is a fascinating object with a spherical two-dimensional electron gas on its surface. We describe two ways of creating them. MEBs have been observed in the dome of a cylindrical cell with an unexpectedly short lifetime; we show analytically why these MEBs can discharge by tunneling. Using a novel method, MEBs have been extracted from a vapor sheath around a hot filament in superfluid helium by applying electric fields up to 15 kV/cm, and photographed with high-speed video. Charges as high as 1.6x10-9 C (~1010 electrons) have been measured. The latter method provides a means of capture in an electromagnetic trap to allow the study of the extensive exciting properties of these elusive objects.

Thermionic Emission, Multielectron Bubbles, and A Novel Electron Collector in a Liquid Helium Environment

We study two techniques to create electrons in a liquid helium environment. One is thermionic emission of tungsten filaments in a low temperature cell in the vapor phase with a superfluid helium film covering all surfaces; the other is operating a glowing filament immersed in bulk liquid helium. We present both the steady state and rapid sweep I-V curves and the electron current yield. These curves, having a negative dynamic resistance region, differ remarkably from those of a vacuum tube filament. A novel low temperature vapor-phase electron collector for which the insulating helium film on the collector surface can be removed is used to measure emission current. We also discuss our achievement of producing multi-electron bubbles (MEBs) in liquid helium by a new method.

The multi-band nonthermal emission from the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946

Nonthermal X-rays and very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays have been detected from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, and especially the recent observations with the \textit{Suzaku} satellite clearly reveal a spectral cutoff in the X-ray spectrum, which directly relates to the cutoff of the energy spectrum of the parent electrons. However, whether the origin of the VHE $γ$-rays from the SNR is hadronic or leptonic is still in debate. We studied the multi-band nonthermal emission from RX J1713.7-3946 based on a semi-analytical approach to the nonlinear shock acceleration process by including the contribution of the accelerated electrons to the nonthermal radiation. The results show that the multi-band observations on RX J1713.7-3946 can be well explained in the model with appropriate parameters and the TeV $γ$-rays have hadronic origin, i.e., they are produced via proton-proton (p-p) interactions as the relativistic protons accelerated at the shock collide with the ambient matter.
