Field Evolution of Coexisting Superconducting and Magnetic Orders in CeCoIn$_5$

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the three distinct In sites of CeCoIn$_5$ with magnetic field applied in the [100] direction. We identify the microscopic nature of the long range magnetic order (LRO) stabilized at low temperatures in fields above 10.2 T while still in the superconducting (SC) state. We infer that the ordered moment is oriented along the $\hat c$-axis and map its field evolution. The study of the field dependence of the NMR shift for the different In sites indicates that the LRO likely coexists with a modulated SC phase, possibly that predicted by Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov. Furthermore, we discern a field region dominated by strong spin fluctuations where static LRO is absent and propose a revised phase diagram.

Heavy fermion material: Ce versus Yb case

Heavy fermion compounds are complex systems but excellent materials to study quantum criticality with the switch of different ground states. Here a special attention is given on the interplay between magnetic and valence instabilities which can be crossed or approached by tuning the system by pressure or magnetic field. By contrast to conventional rare earth magnetism or classical s wave superconductivity, strong couplings may occur with drastic changes in spin or charge dynamics. Measurements on Ce materials give already a sound basis with clear key factors; they have pointed out that close to a magnetic or a valence criticality unexpected phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, non Fermi liquid behaviour and the possibility of re-entrance phenomena under magnetic field. Recent progresses in the growth of Yb heavy fermion compounds give the perspectives of clear interplays between valence and magnetic fluctuations and also the possibility to enter in new situations such as valence transitions inside a sole doublet crystal field ground state.

Observation of the J-sheet of the Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2

We report a previously unobserved quantum oscillation frequency in YbRh2Si2. This is the first quantum oscillation that can definitely be assigned to the larger of the two major sheets of the Fermi surface predicted by band structure calculations. Previously observed frequencies were interpreted in terms of a large Fermi surface, which includes the Yb 4f-hole in the Fermi volume, that has been so strongly spin-split that it closely resembles the small Fermi surface, which does not include the Yb 4f -hole in the Fermi volume. The new frequency can also be incorporated into this picture, however there are some indications that the a need for more advanced energy band calculations.

Quantum criticality of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ : the magnetically ordered phase

We report specific heat and neutron scattering experiments performed on the system Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ on the magnetic side of its quantum critical phase diagram. The Kondo temperature does not vanish at the quantum phase transition and elastic scattering indicates a gradual localisation of the magnetism when $x$ increases in the ordered phase.

Pressure-phase diagram of UCoGe by ac-susceptibility and resistivity measurements

UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P approximately 1.2 GPa. Astonishingly, the superconductivity persists at pressures up to at least 2.4 GPa. In other superconducting and ferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds like UGe2 and URhGe, the superconducting state is situated only inside the larger ferromagnetic region. Therefore, UCoGe seems to be the first example where superconductivity extends from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic region.

Evolution of the spin resonance in CeCoIn$_5$ under magnetic field

The evolution of the magnetic excitation spectrum of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ was studied by inelastic neutron scattering as a function of magnetic field applied in the [1, -1, 0] direction. The spin resonance characteristic of the superconducting states was observed up to about $H_{c2}$/2 : it is still centered at (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) when the magnetic field increases while its characteristic energy decreases and its lineshape substantially broadens.

Mass Enhancement and Reentrant Ground State in Magnetic Field

Three different cases of magnetic field reentrant ground states in heavy fermion systems, URhGe, UGe$_2$ and CeRhIn$_5$ recently studied in Grenoble, are discussed. URhGe is a ferromagnetic superconductor with reentrace of superconductivity under magnetic field ($H$) which is associated to the spin reorientation field. UGe$_2$ is a ferromagnetic superconductor with an enhancement of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of superconductivity at its metamagnetic transition between 2 ferromagnetic phases. CeRhIn$_5$ is a superconductor with $H$ reentrant antiferromagnetism. We analyze the links between the $H$ enhancement of the different contributions to the effective mass and the field reentrant phase.

On the destruction of the hidden order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ by a strong magnetic field

We present a study of transport properties of the heavy fermion URu$_2$Si$_2$ in pulsed magnetic field. The large Nernst response of the hidden order state is found to be suppressed when the magnetic field exceeds 35 T. The combination of resistivity, Hall and Nernst data outlines the reconstruction of the Fermi surface in the temperature-field phase diagram. The zero-field ground state is a compensated heavy-electron semi-metal, which is destroyed by magnetic field through a cascade of field-induced transitions. Above 40 T, URu$_2$Si$_2$ appears to be a polarized heavy fermions metal with a large density of carriers whose effective mass rapidly decreases with increasing magnetic polarization.

Magnetic-Field Dependence of the YbRh2Si2 Fermi Surface

Magnetic-field-induced changes of the Fermi surface play a central role in theories of the exotic quantum criticality of YbRh2Si2. We have carried out de Haas-van Alphen measurements in the magnetic-field range 8 T <= H <= 16 T, and directly observe field dependence of the extremal Fermi surface areas. Our data support the theory that a low-field "large" Fermi surface, including the Yb 4f quasihole, is increasingly spin split until a majority-spin branch undergoes a Lifshitz transition and disappears at H0 ~ 10 T, without requiring 4f localization at H0.

Nodeless spin triplet superconducting gap in Sr2RuO4

We report on tunneling spectroscopy measurements using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) on the spin triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. We find a negligible density of states close to the Fermi level and a fully opened gap with a value of $Δ$=0.28 meV, which disappears at T$_c$ = 1.5 K. $Δ$ is close to the result expected from weak coupling BCS theory ($Δ_0$=1.76kBT$_c$ = 0.229 meV). Odd parity superconductivity is associated with a fully isotropic gap without nodes over a significant part of the Fermi surface.

Transport anomalies across the quantum limit in semimetallic Bi$_{0.96}$Sb$_{0.04}$

We report on a study of electronic transport in semi-metallic Bi$_{0.96}$Sb$_{0.04}$. At zero field, the system is a very dilute Fermi liquid displaying a T$^{2}$ resistivity with an enhanced prefactor. Quantum oscillations in resistivity as well as in Hall, Nernst and Seebeck responses of the system are detectable and their period quantifies the shrinking of the Fermi surface with antimony doping. For a field along the trigonal axis, the quantum limit was found to occur at a field as low as 3T. An ultraquantum anomaly at twice this field was detected in both charge transport and Nernst response. Its origin appears to lie beyond the one-particle picture and linked to unidentified many-body effects.

The Fermi surface and f-valence electron count of UPt3

Combining old and new de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) and magnetoresistance data, we arrive at a detailed picture of the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt3. Our work was partially motivated by a new proposal that two 5f valence electrons per formula unit in UPt3 are localized by correlation effects -- agreement with previous dHvA measurements of the Fermi surface was invoked in its support. Comprehensive comparison with our new observations shows that this 'partially localized' model fails to predict the existence of a major sheet of the Fermi surface, and is therefore less compatible with experiment than the originally proposed 'fully itinerant' model of the electronic structure of UPt3. In support of this conclusion, we offer a more complete analysis of the fully itinerant band structure calculation, where we find a number of previously unrecognized extremal orbits on the Fermi surface.

The high-field Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2

We present quantum oscillation measurements of YbRh2Si2 at magnetic fields above the Kondo-suppression scale H0 ~ 10 T. Comparison with electronic structure calculations is complicated because the "small" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is not contributing to the Fermi volume, and "large" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is contributing to the Fermi volume, are related by a rigid Fermi energy shift. This means that spin-split branches of the large Fermi surface can look like unsplit branches of the small surface, and vice-versa. Thus, although the high-field angle dependence of the experimentally-measured oscillation frequencies most resembles the electronic structure prediction for the small Fermi surface, this may instead be a branch of the spin-split large Fermi surface.

Comment on ``Texture in the Superconducting Order Parameter of CeCoIn$_5$ Revealed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance''

The study of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state has been of considerable recent interest. Below the temperature $T^*$ which is believed to be the transition temperature ($T$) to the FFLO phase in CeCoIn$_5$, K. Kakuyanagi et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 047602 (2005)) reported a composite NMR spectrum with a tiny component observed at frequencies corresponding to the normal state signal. The results were interpreted as evidence for the emergence of an FFLO state. This result is inconsistent with two other NMR studies of V. F. Mitrovi{ć} et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 117002 (2006)) and B.-L. Young et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 036402 (2007)). In this comment we show that the findings of K. Kakuyanagi et al. do not reflect the true nature of the FFLO state but result from excess RF excitation power used in that experiment.

Field Dependence of the Ground State in the Exotic Superconductor CeCoIn$_5$: a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Investigation

We report $^{115}$In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in CeCoIn$_5$ at low temperature ($T \approx 70$ mK) as a function of magnetic field ($H_0$) from 2 T to 13.5 T applied perpendicular to the $\hat c$-axis. NMR line shift reveals that below 10 T the spin susceptibility increases as $\sqrt{H_0}$. We associate this with an increase of the density of states due to the Zeeman and Doppler-shifted quasiparticles extended outside the vortex cores in a d-wave superconductor. Above 10 T a new superconducting state is stabilized, possibly the modulated phase predicted by Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin and Ovchinnikov (FFLO). This phase is clearly identified by a strong and linear increase of the NMR shift with the field, before a jump at the first order transition to the normal state.

A signature of hidden order in URu2Si2 : the excitation at the wavevector Q0 = (100)

Simultaneous neutron-scattering and thermal expansion measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure of 0.67 GPa have been performed in order to detect the successive paramagnetic, hidden order, and large moment antiferromagnetic phases on cooling. The temperature dependence of the sharp low energy excitation at the wavevector Q_0=(100) shows that this excitation is clearly a signature of the hidden order state. In the antiferromagnetic phase, this collective mode disappears. The higher energy excitation at the incommensurate wavevector Q_1=(1.4,0,0) persists in the antiferromagnetic phase but increases in energy. The collapse of the inelastic neutron scattering at Q_0 coincides with the previous observation of the disappearance of superconductivity.

Skutterudite Results Shed Light on Heavy Fermion Physics

Only few selected examples among the great diversity of anomalous rare earth skutterudite are reviewed. Focus is first given on PrFe4P12 in comparison with URu2Si2. For PrFe4P12, great progress has been made on determining the nature of the order parameter (OP). A non magnetic order parameter with a multipolar component emerges here while for URu2Si2 the nature of the so-called hidden order remains mysterious. The two systems have several similarities in their temperature--pressure (T, P) and magnetic field--temperature (H, T) phase diagrams, in their spin dynamics, in their nesting character and in their high sensitivity to impurities. Advances on one side must stimulate new views on the other. Besides general considerations on the choice of the OP, a simple basic problem is the treatment of the Kondo coupling in a system with low charge carrier number for the cases of uncompensated and compensated semi-metal. An interesting problem is also the possible decoupling between exciton modes and itinerant carriers.

Thermoelectric response near a quantum critical point: the case of CeCoIn5

We present a study of thermoelectric coefficients in CeCoIn_5 down to 0.1 K and up to 16 T in order to probe the thermoelectric signatures of quantum criticality. In the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point, the Nernst coefficient nu exhibits a dramatic enhancement without saturation down to lowest measured temperature. The dimensionless ratio of Seebeck coefficient to electronic specific heat shows a minimum at a temperature close to threshold of the quasiparticle formation. Close to T_c(H), in the vortex-liquid state, the Nernst coefficient behaves anomalously in puzzling contrast with other superconductors and standard vortex dynamics.
