A survey of top quark polarization at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider

We discuss in detail top quark polarization in above-threshold (t \bar t)-production at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider. We pay particular attention to the minimization and maximization of the polarization of the top quark by tuning the longitudinal polarization of the e^+ and e^- beams. The polarization of the top quark is calculated in full next-to-leading order QCD. We also discuss the beam polarization dependence of the longitudinal spin-spin correlations of the top and antitop quark spins.

O(alpha_s) spin effects in e+ e- -> q qbar (g)

We discuss O(alpha_s) spin effects in e+ e- -> q qbar (g) for the polarization of single quarks and for spin-spin correlations of the final state quarks. Particular attention is paid to residual mass effects in the limit m_q -> 0 which are described in terms of universal helicity flip and helicity non-flip contributions.

Analytical results for O(α_s) radiative corrections to e+ e- -> tbar t(pol.) up to a given gluon energy cut

We determine the O(α_s) radiative corrections to polarized top quark pair production in e+ e- -annihilations with a specified gluon energy cut. We write down fully analytical results for the unpolarized and polarized O(α_s) cross sections e+ e- -> tbar t (G) and e+ e- -> tbar t(pol.) (G) including their polar orientation dependence relative to the beam direction. In the soft gluon limit we recover the usual factorizing form known from the soft gluon approximation. In the limit when the gluon energy cut takes its maximum value we recover the totally inclusive unpolarized and polarized cross sections calculated previously. We provide some numerical results on the cut-off dependence of the various polarized and unpolarized cross sections and discuss how the exact results numerically differ from the approximate soft-gluon results.

Helicity Analysis of Semileptonic Hyperon Decays Including Lepton Mass Effects

Using the helicity method we derive complete formulas for the joint angular decay distributions occurring in semileptonic hyperon decays including lepton mass and polarization effects. Compared to the traditional covariant calculation the helicity method allows one to organize the calculation of the angular decay distributions in a very compact and efficient way. In the helicity method the angular analysis is of cascade type, i.e. each decay in the decay chain is analyzed in the respective rest system of that particle. Such an approach is ideally suited as input for a Monte Carlo event generation program. As a specific example we take the decay $Ξ^0 \to Σ^+ + l^- + \barν_l$ ($l^-=e^-, μ^-$) followed by the nonleptonic decay $Σ^+ \to p + π^0$ for which we show a few examples of decay distributions which are generated from a Monte Carlo program based on the formulas presented in this paper. All the results of this paper are also applicable to the semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of ground state charm and bottom baryons, and to the decays of the top quark.

Heavy quark pair production in gluon fusion at next-to-next-to-leading ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ order: One-loop squared contributions

We calculate the next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ one-loop squared corrections to the production of heavy-quark pairs in the gluon-gluon fusion process. Together with the previously derived results on the $q \bar{q}$ production channel the results of this paper complete the calculation of the one-loop squared contributions of the next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ radiative QCD corrections to the hadroproduction of heavy flavors. Our results, with the full mass dependence retained, are presented in a closed and very compact form, in dimensional regularization.

Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD corrections to baryon correlators in matter

We compute the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections to the correlators of nucleon interpolating currents in relativistic nuclear matter. The main new result is the calculation of the O(alpha_s) perturbative corrections to the coefficient functions of the vector quark condensate in matter. This condensate appears in matter due to the violation of Lorentz invariance. The NLO perturbative QCD corrections turn out to be large which implies that the NLO corrections must be included in a sum rule analysis of the properties of both bound nucleons and relativistic nuclear matter.

Heavy baryon properties with NLO accuracy in perturbative QCD

We present an analysis of the static properties of heavy baryons at next-to-leading order in the perurbative expansion of QCD. We obtain analytical next-to-leading order three-loop results for the two-point correlators of baryonic currents with one finite mass quark field for a variety of quantum numbers of the baryonic currents. We consider both the massless limit and the HQET limit of the correlator as special cases of the general finite mass formula and find agreement with previous results. We present closed form expressions for the moments of the spectral density. We determine the residues of physical baryon states using sum rule techniques.

Next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ results for heavy quark pair production in quark--antiquark collisions: The one-loop squared contributions

We calculate the next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ one-loop squared corrections to the production of heavy quark pairs in quark-antiquark annihilations. These are part of the next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ radiative QCD corrections to this process. Our results, with the full mass dependence retained, are presented in a closed and very compact form, in the dimensional regularization scheme. We have found very intriguing factorization properties for the finite part of the amplitudes.

$ O(α_s) $ corrections to polarized top decay into a charged Higgs $ t(\uparrow) \to H^+ + b $

We calculate the $ O(α_s) $ radiative corrections to polarized top quark decay into a charged Higgs boson and a massive bottom quark in two variants of the two-Higgs-doublet model. The radiative corrections to the polarization asymmetry of the decay may become as large as $ 25 % $. We provide analytical formulae for the unpolarized and polarized rates for $ m_b \neq 0 $ and for $ m_b = 0 $. For $ m_b = 0 $ our closed-form expressions for the unpolarized and polarized rates become rather compact.

Selected Topics in Top Quark Physics

I discuss three different selected topics in top quark physics. The first topic concerns the next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the hadroproduction of top quark pairs and the role of multiple polylogarithms in this calculation. I report on an ongoing next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of heavy quark pair production in hadron collisions where the loop--by--loop part of the calculation is about to be completed. Calculating the loop-by-loop part allows one to take a glimpse at the mathematical structure of the full NNLO calculation. The loop-by-loop contributions bring in a new class of functions introduced only eight years ago by the Russian mathematician Goncharov called multiple polylogarithms. The second topic concerns a next-to-leading order calculation of unpolarized top quark decays which are analyzed in cascade fashion $t \to b + W^+$ followed by $W^+ \to l^+ + ν_l$. Finally, I present some next-to-leading order results on polarized top quark decays which are analyzed in the top quark rest system.

Laurent series expansion of a class of massive scalar one-loop integrals up to ${\cal O}(\ep^2)$ in terms of multiple polylogarithms

In a recent paper we have presented results for a set of massive scalar one-loop master integrals needed in the NNLO parton model description of the hadroproduction of heavy flavors. The one--loop integrals were evaluated in $n=4-2\ep$ dimension and the results were presented in terms of a Laurent series expansion up to ${\cal O}(\ep^2)$. We found that some of the $\ep^2$ coefficients contain a new class of functions which we termed the $L$ functions. The $L$ functions are defined in terms of one--dimensional integrals involving products of logarithm and dilogarithm functions. In this paper we derive a complete set of algebraic relations that allow one to convert the $L$ functions of our previous approach to a sum of classical and multiple polylogarithms. Using these results we are now able to present the $\ep^2$ coefficients of the one-loop master integrals in terms of classical and multiple polylogarithms.

Large next-to-leading order QCD corrections to pentaquark sum rules

Using configuration space techniques, we calculate next-to-leading order (NLO) five-loop QCD corrections to the correlators of interpolating pentaquark currents in the limit of massless quarks. We obtain very large NLO corrections to the spectral density which makes a standard sum rule analysis problematic. However, the NLO corrections to the correlator in configuration space are reasonable. We discuss the implications of our results for the phenomenological sum rule analysis of pentaquark states.

One-loop amplitudes for four-point functions with two external massive quarks and two external massless partons up to O(epsilon^2)

We present complete analytical ${\mathcal O}(ε^2)$ results on the one-loop amplitudes relevant for the NNLO quark-parton model description of the hadroproduction of heavy quarks as given by the so-called loop-by-loop contributions. All results of the perturbative calculation are given in the dimensional regularization scheme. These one-loop amplitudes can also be used as input in the determination of the corresponding NNLO cross sections for heavy flavor photoproduction, and in photon-photon reactions.

Spectator Effects in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory

We present a complete analysis of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory Lagrangian at order $1/m^2$ in the leading logarithmic approximation, including effects induced by spectator quarks. At this order new correction terms appear in the effective Lagrangian, as four-quark operators containing both heavy and light quark fields. We compute the coefficients of these operators to one-loop order and in the leading-logarithmic approximation. Two of them break the heavy quark spin symmetry and we estimate their contribution to the hyperfine splitting of the heavy mesons in the factorization approximation. We find that they make a positive contribution to the hyperfine splitting of about 10% of the measured splitting in the charm case and of up to 5% in the bottom case.

On the evaluation of a certain class of Feynman diagrams in x-space: Sunrise-type topologies at any loop order

We review recently developed new powerful techniques to compute a class of Feynman diagrams at any loop order, known as sunrise-type diagrams. These sunrise-type topologies have many important applications in many different fields of physics and we believe it to be timely to discuss their evaluation from a unified point of view. The method is based on the analysis of the diagrams directly in configuration space which, in the case of the sunrise-type diagrams and diagrams related to them, leads to enormous simplifications as compared to the traditional evaluation of loops in momentum space. We present explicit formulae for their analytical evaluation for arbitrary mass configurations and arbitrary dimensions at any loop order. We discuss several limiting cases of their kinematical regimes which are e.g. relevant for applications in HQET and NRQCD.

Note on the Slope Parameter of the Baryonic Λ_b to Λ_c Isgur-Wise Function

Using the framework of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory we have re-analyzed the Isgur-Wise function describing semileptonic Λ_b to Λ_c decays in the QCD sum rule approach. The slope parameter of the Isgur-Wise function is found to be ρ^2 = 1.35 \pm 0.12, which is consistent with an experimental measurement and a lattice calculation. To O(1/m_b,1/m_c) of the heavy quark expansion the integrated Λ_b decay width is used to extract the CKM matrix element V_{cb} for which we obtain a value of |V_{cb}| = 0.041 \pm 0.004 in excellent agreement with the value of |V_{cb}| determined from semileptonic B to D^* decays.

Semi-inclusive decays Lambda_b -> X_c + D_s^* at O(alpha_s) including Lambda_b and D_s^* polarization effects

In the leading order of the (1/m_b)-expansion in HQET the dominant contribution to the semi-inclusive decays of polarized Lambda_b baryons into the charm-strangeness mesons D_s and D_s^* is given by the partonic process b(up) -> c + (D_s^-, D_s^{*-}). Using standard values for the parameters of the process one expects a rather large branching ratio of approx. 8% into these two channels. In the factorization approximation the semi-inclusive decay of a polarized Lambda_b is governed by three unpolarized and four polarized structure functions for which we determine the nonperturbative O(1/m_b^2) corrections and the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections. We find that the perturbative and nonperturbative corrections amount to approx. 10% and approx. 3%, respectively. The seven structure functions can be measured through an analysis of the joint decay distributions of the process involving the polarization of the Lambda_b and the decays D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + gamma and D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + pi^0 for which we provide explicit forms. We also provide numerical results for the Cabibbo suppressed semi-inclusive decays Lambda_b -> X_u + (D_s, D_s^*).
