Eliminating photon transport in long-baseline optical interferometry using quantum memories

In this paper, we describe the fundamental operating mechanisms of optical interferometry using quantum memory and entanglement. We show how these remove the optical delay line bottleneck. Quantum memory is not without its own set of challenges, some of which include very small bandwidths as well as limitations in storage time. We examine the influence of timing artifacts on memory photon capture probability and interferometric complex visibility. We highlight keystone areas of technology that require further development and are essential to realizing these opportunities, as well as ongoing work to overcome these challenges.

Entanglement distribution: To herald or not to herald

High-rate, high-fidelity entanglement distribution is essential for the creation of a quantum internet, and spontaneous parametric downconverters (SPDCs) are, at present, the preferred sources of entangled signal-idler photon pairs for transmission to Alice and Bob's quantum nodes. SPDCs using phase-matched spectral islands are especially attractive, in this regard, because they provide wavelength-division multiplexed signal-idler pairs with single-mode temporal behavior. This paper compares the entanglement distribution rates of three islands-based systems. Two use idler detections for heralding: islands-based zero-added-loss multiplexing (ZALM), and an islands-based Sagnac SPDC source with signal-path erasure. The third employs an unheralded Sagnac SPDC source. For 90% or lower heralding efficiencies, ZALM's per-pump-pulse entanglement distribution rate exceeds that of the signal-path erasure source, and both rates are inferior to unheralded operation's when all three systems employ $N_I$ spectral islands and allocate $N_M = N_I$ quantum memories to each pump pulse. These behaviors, however, must be weighed against the three systems' differing equipment requirements, e.g., ZALM requires a pair of perfectly-matched Sagnac sources, which is a significant burden not incurred by the signal-path erasure approach, and both heralded systems will suffer, in comparison with unheralded operation, if they cannot realize high heralding efficiencies.

Heralded quasi-deterministic entanglement sources based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion

A double-heralding technique is presented for producing heralded entangled photon pairs from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Compared to the swap-heralded schemes studied in previous cascaded SPDC and zero-added-loss multiplexing (ZALM) proposals, this double-heralding technique is found to yield the most resource-efficient implementation in terms of minimizing the total number of sources and detectors required to achieve a specified rate and fidelity. This is achieved by reducing the number of modes and mode-sorting optics needed on the heralding path. Specifically, by immediately detecting any two signal photons from an array of down-converters, the corresponding idler photons can be projected onto an anti-correlated pair state which is shown to be unitarily equivalent to the state produced by swap-heralded sources, and hence can be used directly for long-range entanglement distribution in a ZALM architecture. Quasi-deterministic operation through two distinct multiplexing techniques is analyzed. The analysis derives expressions for the heralded pair probability and fidelity assuming realistic detectors with losses, dark counts, and partial photon number resolution (PNR), providing a framework for implementation of the source on a photonic integrated circuit (PIC).

Full-stack Physics-level model of cascaded entanglement links

While the last few decades have seen a proliferation of experimental demonstrations of entanglement sources, practicality of deployment has been a secondary concern. Recently, the ZALM source was introduced, as a well-engineered functional device, easily integrated within a complete networking system. It addresses numerous concerns which make typical academic demonstrations less practical: reliable heralding signals, multiplexing across multiple dimensions, and efficient use of input power. We present a stack of tools for modeling mode-by-mode a ZALM source under realistic conditions, in isolation or as a part of a complete network testbed. Our modeling formalism builds upon a hybrid Gaussian and non-Gaussian representation, providing a flexible tradeoff between performance and accuracy, while also greatly simplifying the exact calculation of otherwise expensive scalar figures of merit. This toolkit, implemented in the Python package called "genqo", is integrated within the QuantumSavory full-stack simulator and the QuantumSymbolics computer algebra system. We use this software stack to demonstrate a number of complete networking protocols built upon the ZALM source.

Towards quantum-enhanced long-baseline optical/near-IR interferometry

Microarcsecond resolutions afforded by an optical-NIR array with kilometer-baselines would enable breakthrough science. However significant technology barriers exist in transporting weakly coherent photon states over these distances: primarily photon loss and phase errors. Quantum telescopy, using entangled states to link spatially separated apertures, offers a possible solution to the loss of photons. We report on an initiative launched by NSF NOIRLab in collaboration with the Center for Quantum Networks and Arizona Quantum Initiative at the University of Arizona, Tucson, to explore these concepts further. A brief description of the quantum concepts and a possible technology roadmap towards a quantum-enhanced very long baseline optical-NIR interferometric array is presented. An on-sky demonstration of measuring spatial coherence of photons with apertures linked through the simplest Gottesman protocol over short baselines and with limited phase fluctuations is envisaged as the first step.
