Self-sustained spatiotemporal oscillations induced by membrane-bulk coupling

We propose a novel mechanism leading to spatiotemporal oscillations in extended systems that does not rely on local bulk instabilities. Instead, oscillations arise from the interaction of two subsystems of different spatial dimensionality. Specifically, we show that coupling a passive diffusive bulk of dimension d with an excitable membrane of dimension d-1 produces a self-sustained oscillatory behavior. An analytical explanation of the phenomenon is provided for d=1. Moreover, in-phase and anti-phase synchronization of oscillations are found numerically in one and two dimensions. This novel dynamic instability could be used by biological systems such as cells, where the dynamics on the cellular membrane is necessarily different from that of the cytoplasmic bulk.

Noise-Induced Order in Extended Systems: A Tutorial

External fluctuations have a wide variety of constructive effects on the dynamical behavior of spatially extended systems, as described by stochastic partial differential equations. A set of paradigmatic situations exhibiting such effects are briefly reviewed in this paper, in an attempt to provide a concise but thorough introduction to this active field of research, and at the same time an overview of its current status. This work is dedicated to Lutz Schimansky-Geier on the occassion of his 50th anniversary. Through the years, Prof. Schimansky-Geier has made important contributions to the field of spatiotemporal stochastic dynamics, including seminal investigations in the early 1990's on noise effects in front propagation, and studies of noise-induced phase transitions and noise-sustained structures in excitable media, among others.

Spatial Coherence Resonance near Pattern-Forming Instabilities

The analogue of temporal coherence resonance for spatial degrees of freedom is reported. Specifically, we show that spatiotemporal noise is able to optimally extract an intrinsic spatial scale in nonlinear media close to (but before) a pattern-forming instability. This effect is observed in a model of pattern-forming chemical reaction and in the Swift-Hohenberg model of fluid convection. In the latter case, the phenomenon is described analytically via an approximate approach.

Intrinsic noise-induced phase transitions: beyond the noise interpretation

We discuss intrinsic noise effects in stochastic multiplicative-noise partial differential equations, which are qualitatively independent of the noise interpretation (Ito vs. Stratonovich), in particular in the context of noise-induced ordering phase transitions. We study a model which, contrary to all cases known so far, exhibits such ordering transitions when the noise is interpreted not only according to Stratonovich, but also to Ito. The main feature of this model is the absence of a linear instability at the transition point. The dynamical properties of the resulting noise-induced growth processes are studied and compared in the two interpretations and with a reference Ginzburg-Landau type model. A detailed discussion of new numerical algorithms used in both interpretations is also presented.

Dynamics of modal power distribution in a multimode semiconductor laser with optical feedback

The dynamics of power distribution between longitudinal modes of a multimode semiconductor laser subjected to external optical feedback is experimentally analyzed in the low-frequency fluctuation regime. Power dropouts in the total light intensity are invariably accompanied by sudden activations of several longitudinal modes. These activations are seen not to be simultaneous to the dropouts, but to occur after them. The phenomenon is statistically analysed in a systematic way, and the corresponding delay is estimated.

Effect of External Noise Correlation in Optical Coherence Resonance

Coherence resonance occurring in semiconductor lasers with optical feedback is studied via the Lang-Kobayashi model with external non-white noise in the pumping current. The temporal correlation and the amplitude of the noise have a highly relevant influence in the system, leading to an optimal coherent response for suitable values of both the noise amplitude and correlation time. This phenomenon is quantitatively characterized by means of several statistical measures.

An entropy-driven noise-induced phase transition

We introduce a class of exactly solvable models which exhibit an ordering noise-induced phase transition driven by an entropic mechanism. In contrast with previous studies, order does not appear in this case as a result of an instability of the disordered phase produced by noise, but of a balance between the relaxing deterministic dynamics and the randomizing (entropic) character of the fluctuations. A finite-size scaling analysis of the phase transition reveals that it belongs to the universality class of the equilibrium Ising model. All these results are analyzed in the light of the nonequilibrium probability distribution of the system, which can be derived analytically. The relevance of our result as a possible scenario of the so-called Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) transitions is analysed.

Dynamics and Scaling of Noise-Induced Domain Growth

The domain growth processes originating from noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transitions are analyzed, both for non-conserved and conserved dynamics. The existence of a dynamical scaling regime is established in the two cases, and the corresponding growth laws are determined. The resulting universal dynamical scaling scenarios are those of Allen-Cahn and Lifshitz-Slyozov, respectively. Additionally, the effect of noise sources on the behaviour of the pair correlation function at short distances is studied.

Spatiotemporal communication with synchronized optical chaos

We propose a model system that allows communication of spatiotemporal information using an optical chaotic carrier waveform. The system is based on broad-area nonlinear optical ring cavities, which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos in a wide parameter range. Message recovery is possible through chaotic synchronization between transmitter and receiver. Numerical simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the benefit of the parallelism of information transfer with optical wavefronts.

Noise-Induced Phase Separation: Mean-Field Results

We present a study of a phase-separation process induced by the presence of spatially-correlated multiplicative noise. We develop a mean-field approach suitable for conserved-order-parameter systems and use it to obtain the phase diagram of the model. Mean-field results are compared with numerical simulations of the complete model in two dimensions. Additionally, a comparison between the noise-driven dynamics of conserved and nonconserved systems is made at the level of the mean-field approximation.

Coherence and synchronization in diode-laser arrays with delayed global coupling

The dynamics of a semiconductor-laser array whose individual elements are coupled in a global way through an external mirror is numerically analysed. A coherent in-phase solution is seen to be preferred by the system at intermediate values of the feedback coupling strength. At low values of this parameter, a strong amplification of the spontaneous emission noise is observed. A tendency towards chaos synchronization is also observed at large values of the feedback strength.

Phase Separation Driven by External Fluctuations

The influence of external fluctuations in phase separation processes is analysed. These fluctuations arise from random variations of an external control parameter. A linear stability analysis of the homogeneous state shows that phase separation dynamics can be induced by external noise. The spatial structure of the noise is found to have a relevant role in this phenomenon. Numerical simulations confirm these results. A comparison with order-disorder noise induced phase transitions is also made.

External Fluctuations in a Pattern-Forming Instability

The effect of external fluctuations on the formation of spatial patterns is analysed by means of a stochastic Swift-Hohenberg model with multiplicative space-correlated noise. Numerical simulations in two dimensions show a shift of the bifurcation point controlled by the intensity of the multiplicative noise. This shift takes place in the ordering direction (i.e. produces patterns), but its magnitude decreases with that of the noise correlation length. Analytical arguments are presented to explain these facts.

Dynamic Renormalization Group Study of the $ϕ^4$ Model with Colored Noise

The non-conserved $ϕ^4$ model defined by a Langevin equation with external non-white noise is studied by means of the Dynamic Renormalization Group. The correlation time of the noise changes the critical point location but does not affect the critical exponents up to order $\varepsilon^2$. The same effect is obtained when the correlation length of the noise is considered. These results are shown to be in agreement with previous numerical simulations.
