Observable acceleration of jets by a Kerr black hole

In the framework of a model based on the gravitational field of the Kerr black hole, we turn to investigate the kinematic behavior of extragalactic jets. We analytically calculate the observable velocities and accelerations along any geodesic. Then, by numerical calculations, we apply our results to a geodesic, typical of the M87 jet, and probe our results by confrontation to recent observations. A transition from non-relativistic to ultrarelativistic speeds at subparsec scale is highlighted. This transition comes sooner and more abruptly than in models based on magnetic paradigm, which indicates that we need a weaker magnetic field to explain observed synchrotron radiation. We attribute the ejection phenomenon to the repulsive effect of the gravitomagnetic Kerr field.

Kerr Geodesics Following the Axis of Symmetry

We present here the general expressions for the acceleration of massive test particles along the symmetry axis of the Kerr metric, and then study the main properties of this acceleration in different regions of the spacetime. In particular, we show that there exists a region near the black hole in which the gravitational field is repulsive. We provide possible physical interpretations about the role of this effect in terms of the different conserved parameters. The studies of these geodesics are important not only to understand better the structure of the Kerr spacetime but also to its use as a possible mechanism for the production of extragalactic jets. Our results are obtained with the help of expressing the geodesics of the Kerr spacetime in terms of the Weyl coordinates.

Unbound geodesics from the ergosphere and potential observability of debris from ultrahigh energy particle collisions

Particle collisions in black hole ergoregions may result in extremely high center of mass energies that could probe new physics if escape to infinity were possible. Here we show that some geodesics at high inclinations to the equatorial plane may be unbound. Hence a finite flux of annihilation debris is able to escape, especially in the case of near-extremal Kerr black holes and if the Penrose process plays a role. For a class of Penrose processes, we show that the Wald inequalities are satisfied, allowing the Penrose process to have a key role in high energy ejection. Hence the possibility of observing new physics effects from a black hole accelerator at unprecedentedly high particle collision energies remains a tantalizing, if futuristic, experimental vision.

Unbound geodesics from the ergosphere and the M87 jet profile

Assuming that the spin $a$ of the black hole, presumably located at the core of the active galactic nuclei Messier 87 (M87), takes the value which maximises the ergospheric volume of the Kerr spacetime, we find results compatible with the recent observations obtained by high resolution interferometry on the origin of the jet, which would be located inside the innermost stable circular orbit diameter. Moreover, we find a flow of unbound geodesics issued from the ergoregion able to frame the best fits at large scale recently obtained for describing the observed profile of the relativistic jet launched from this central engine.

Gravitational Model of High Energy Particles in a Collimated Jet

Observations suggest that relativistic particles play a fundamental role in the dynamics of jets emerging from active galactic nuclei as well as in their interaction with the intracluster medium. However, no general consensus exists concerning the acceleration mechanism of those high energy particles. A gravitational acceleration mechanism is here proposed, in which particles leaving precise regions within the ergosphere of a rotating supermassive black hole produce a highly collimated flow. These particles follow unbound geodesics which are asymptotically parallel to the spin axis of the black hole and are characterized by the energy $E$, the Carter constant ${\cal Q}$ and zero angular momentum of the component $L_z$. If environmental effects are neglected, the present model predicts at distances of about 140 kpc from the ergosphere the presence of electrons with energies around 9.4 GeV. The present mechanism can also accelerate protons up to the highest energies observed in cosmic rays by the present experiments.

Model of collimated jets with high energy particles

The increasing data set of precise observations of very energetic and collimated jets, with black hole (BH) as putative central engine, at different astrophysical scales and in various environments, should soon permit to discriminate and classify current theoretical models able to describe the jets formation. We construct a purely gravitational theoretical model of perfectly collimated jets of high energy particles in the ideal case where the central engine is a Kerr BH of mass $M$ and angular momentum by unit of mass $a$. We study in Weyl coordinates ($ρ$, $z$) the unbound Kerr 2D-geodesics which are asymptotes to straight lines parallel to the $z$ axis of equations ρ=constant= ρ_{1}= [(a/M)^2+Q/(E^2-1)]^{1/2} of which existence was recently demonstrated (Gariel et al.,A & A, 2010). On these geodesics, flow test particles of energy $E$, with a Carter constant $Q$ and (necessarily) an angular momentum $L_{z}=0$. Studying the characteristics of the geodesics equations system, in the special case of a double root, we exhibit jets with a radial structure, whose energy flux can be calculated. From the observed data of the jet powers, we obtain the mean particles density, the particles flow, the speed and the Lorentz factor of the jets, for any charged or neutral test particle. Then, we numerically apply these results to electrons. We also discuss the domains of initial conditions for geodesics starting inside the ergosphere. All these results come from the Kerr spacetime structure, and enhance the Penrose process as a plausible origin for the high energy jets.

Kerr Geodesics, the Penrose Process and Jet Collimation by a Black Hole

We re-examine the possibility that astrophysical jet collimation may arise from the geometry of rotating black holes and the presence of high-energy particles resulting from a Penrose process, without the help of magnetic fields. Our analysis uses the Weyl coordinates, which are revealed better adapted to the desired shape of the jets. We numerically integrate the 2D-geodesics equations. We give a detailed study of these geodesics and give several numerical examples. Among them are a set of perfectly collimated geodesics with asymptotes $ρ=ρ_{1}$ parallel to the $z-$ axis, with $ρ_{1}$ only depending on the ratios $\frac{\mathcal{Q}}{E^{2}-1}$ and $\frac{a}{M}$, where $a$ and $M$ are the parameters of the Kerr black hole, $E$ the particle energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ the Carter's constant.

Reduction of the effective mass of the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime

We derive the Teixeira, Wolk and Som method, for obtaining electrostatic solutions from given vacuum solutions, in its inverse form. Then we use it to obtain the geometrical mass $M_S$ in the Schwarzschild spacetime, and we find $M_S^2=M^2-Q^2$, where $M$ and $Q$ are, respectively, the mass and charge parameters of the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We compare $M_S$ to the corresponding active gravitational mass and mass function.

On the pre-nucleosynthesis cosmological period

Physics, as known from our local, around--earth experience, meets some of its applicability limits at the time just preceding the period of primeval nucleosynthesis. Attention is focussed here on the effects of the nucleon size. Radiation--belonging nucleons are found to produce an extremely high pressure at kT of the order of some tens or hundreds of MeV. Quark deconfinement at higher energies would not change the results.

Some Properties of a New Solution of the Ernst Equation

From a particularly simple solution of the Ernst equation, we build a solution of the vacuum stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations depending on three parameters. The parameters are associated to the total mass of the source and its angular momentum. The third parameter produces a topological deformation of the ergosphere making it a two-sheet surface, and for some of its values forbids the Penrose process.

Parametrization of singularities of the Demiański-Newman spacetimes

We propose a new presentation of the Demiański-Newman (DN) solution of the axisymmetric Einstein equations. We introduce new dimensionless parameters $p$, $q$ and $s$, but keeping the Boyer-Lindquist coordinate transformation used for the Kerr metric in the Ernst method. The family of DN metrics is studied and it is shown that the main role of $s$ is to determine the singularities, which we obtain by calculating the Riemann tensor components and the invariants of curvature. So, $s$ reveals itself as the parameter of the singular rings on the inner ergosphere.

Gravitational dust collapse with cosmological constant

We study the fate of gravitational collapse in presence of a cosmological constant. The junctions conditions between static and non-static space-times are deduced. Three apparent horizon are formed, but only two have physical significance, one of them being the black hole horizon and the other the cosmological horizon. The cosmological constant term slows down the collapse of matter, limiting also the size of the black hole.
