Three-body system in leading order Effective Field Theory without three-body forces

The use of leading order effective field theory (EFT) to describe neutron-deuteron scattering leads to integral equations that have unusual behaviour: when only two-body interactions are included, the scattering amplitude does not approach a limit when the cutoff used to solve the equations is removed. It has recently been shown that this cutoff dependence can be eliminated by the careful inclusion of a three-body force. In this paper we show that the cutoff dependence is just a reflection of the fact that the aforementioned integral equations admit an infinite number of solutions amongst which only one corresponds to the physical scattering amplitude. We show how to numerically extract the physical scattering amplitude from the general solution and in this way explicitly demonstrate that the amplitude for a particle scattering off a two-body bound state, in leading order EFT, is in fact determined entirely by two-body forces.

Is Heavy Baryon Approach Necessary?

It is demonstrated that using an appropriately chosen renormalization condition one can respect power counting within the relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory without appealing to the technique of the heavy baryon approach. Explicit calculations are performed for diagrams including two-loops. It is argued that the introduction of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory was useful but not necessary.

Three-Body System with Short-Range Interactions

Within the framework of non-relativistic scalar effective field theory it is shown that the problem of the cutoff dependence of the leading order amplitude for a particle scattering off a two-body bound state can be solved without introducing three-body forces.

On the Gauge Invariance of the Z-Boson Mass

The different schemes for the definition of the Z boson mass are analyzed. It is shown that the scheme, defining the mass as pole of the real part of the Z boson propagator and the width as the imaginary part of the propagator at the same point results in the gauge dependent results for these parameters in a two-loop approximation. On the other hand, the scheme, where the mass and width are related to the position of the pole of the propagator in the complex plane leads to the gauge independent result. It is argued that the gauge dependence of mass and width does not contradicts to the gauge invariance of the amplitude.

Matching Heavy Particle Approach to Relativistic Theory

On the simple model of interacting massless and heavy scalar fields it is demonstrated that the technique of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory reproduces the results of relativistic theory. Explicit calculations are performed for diagrams including two-loops.

Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering and Effective Field Theory: Including Pions Non-perturbatively

Next to leading order effective field theory calculations are performed for $ {}^1S_0$ NN scattering using subtractive renormalization procedure. One pion exchange and contact interaction potentials are iterated using Lippman-Schwinger equation. Satisfactory fit to the Nijmegen data is obtained for the momenta up to 300 MeV in the centre of mass frame. Phase shifts are also compared with the results of KSW approach where pions are included perturbatively.

Are Pions Perturbative in Effective Field Theory?

It is shown that pions can be included perturbatively into effective field theory only for the external momenta, well below the pion mass. But for such low energies it is not necessary to include pions explicitly.

Perturbative Approach to Non-renormalizable Theories

On the perturbatively non-renormalizable and non-perturbatively finite examples (delta-function type potential in non-relativistic quantum mechanics and the mathematical model of the propagator by Redmond and Uretsky in quantum field theory) we illustrate that one can develop a perturbative approach for non-renormalizable theory. The key idea is the introduction of finite number of additional expansion parameters which allows us to eliminate all infinities from the perturbative expressions. The generated perturbative series reproduce the expansions of the exact analytical solutions.

Chiral Perturbation Theory Approach to NN Scattering Problem

It is shown that chiral perturbation theory (in its original form by Weinberg) can describe NN scattering with positive as well as negative effective range. Some issues connected with unnaturally large NN ^1S_0 scattering length are discussed.

On the regularization scheme and gauge choice ambiguities in topologically massive gauge theories

It is demonstrated that in the (2+1)-dimensional topologically massive gauge theories an agreement of the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme with the other schemes can be achieved by employing pairs of auxiliary fermions with the opposite sign masses. This approach does not introduce additional violation of discrete (P and T) symmetries. Although it breaks the local gauge symmetry only in the regulator fields' sector, its trace disappears completely after removing the regularization as a result of superrenormalizability of the model. It is shown also that analogous extension of the Pauli-Villars regularization in the vector particle sector can be used to agree the arbitrary covariant gauge results with the Landau ones. The source of ambiguities in the covariant gauges is studied in detail. It is demonstrated that in gauges that are softer in the infrared region (e.g. Coulomb or axial) nonphysical ambiguities inherent to the covariant gauges do not arise.

Perturbative Approach For Non Renormalizable Theories

Renormalization procedure is generalized to be applicable for non renormalizable theories. It is shown that introduction of an extra expansion parameter allows to get rid of divergences and express physical quantities as series of finite number of interdependent expansion parameters. Suggested method is applied to quantum (Einstein's) gravity.

Can the Fundamental Theory Of Everything be Renormalizable?

Some considerations showing that renormalizable theories with consistent perturbative theries can not be nonperturbatively finite (in terms of bare parameters) are provided. Accordingly any fundamental unified theory has to be either non renormalizable or order by order finite.

"Renormalization" Of Non Renormalizable Theories

A perturbative approach for non renormalizable theories is developed. It is shown that the introduction of an extra expansion parameter allows one to get rid of divergences and express physical quantities as series with finite coefficients. The method is demonstrated on the example of massive non abelian field coupled to a fermion field.
