Antisymmetric spontaneous resistivity anisotropy due to hard-axis collapse in polycrystalline Co thin films

We investigate magnetoresistance phenomena associated with the magnetization hard-axis collapse in polycrystalline Co thin films. Transport measurements reveal that, for specific orientations of the applied magnetic field, the system exhibits distinct remanent resistance levels in both the in-plane longitudinal and transverse voltage responses. In particular, the planar Hall resistance shows multiple stable and reproducible levels at room temperature, enabling the identification of at least three remanent states that can be distinguished and used for information storage. These resistance levels originate from non-uniform magnetic configurations stabilized after the application and removal of the external magnetic field in the hard-axis region. Since this phenomenon remains largely unexplored, we present an incipient study addressing its potential implications from an applied-physics perspective. The observation of such behavior in polycrystalline Co thin films grown on Si substrates suggests a simple and low-cost platform for spintronic memory and sensing devices based on the remanent planar Hall effect.

Assessing interface coupling in exchange-biased systems via in-field interaction plots

An in-field interaction plot, delta-M_R, has been recently introduced, presenting important advantages over the classical remanence plots. Here a general delta-M_R is proposed, allowing to assess interactions even in systems with shifted and asymmetric major loops. To construct such a plot, a recoil loop and the position of the center of the major loop are only needed. Applying the method on exchange-biased Co/IrMn bilayer gives two types of delta-M_R obtained for measuring field either parallel or antiparallel to the exchange-bias direction. This provides valuable information on the reversal mechanism and allows distinguishing between effects coming from magnetic coupling into the ferromagnet (Co) and those stemming from interactions in its interface with the antiferromagnet (IrMn). The essentially nonzero general delta-M_R plot obtained from the major loop revealed to be a precise measure of the reversal asymmetry. The technique can readily be adjusted for use in other scientific fields where hysteresis is observed. We provide free software which generates such delta-M_R plot(s).

Monoatomic magnetic interfaces in IrMn/Cr/Co thin films probed by grazing incidence X-ray absorption spectroscopy

We present depth-resolved experimental results on the atomic and electronic structures of the Co-Cr interface on four IrMn/Cr/Co thin films with variable thickness of the Cr layer. Grazing incidence X-ray absorption near edge structure near the Cr K-edge was used, and an Angstrom resolved depth-profile for this layer was obtained. An interdiffusion between chromium and cobalt layers was observed in all films, being more pronounced for samples with thinner Cr layers, where Cr behaves as an amorphous material. This causes a contraction in coordination distances in Cr near the interface with Co. In this region, a change in the electronic structure of chromium's 3d orbitals is also observed, and it appears that Cr and Co form a covalent bond resulting in a CrCo alloy. Ab initio numerical simulations support such an interpretation of the obtained experimental results.

Irreversible susceptibility of initial magnetization curve

A method for estimation of reversible and irreversible susceptibilities of initial magnetization curves has been developed. It deals only with the energy necessary for magnetizing and demagnetizing the sample, not with the nature of the magnetization processes neither with a specific type of anisotropy, so it could be applied for a wide variety of real materials. A set of minor hysteresis loops of an initially demagnetized sample, plotted with progressively increasing maximum magnetic field, has been used. The obtained results showed an excellent coincidence with those calculated by the remanence curve method for a Stoner-Wohlfarth model system.
