Harmonic polylogarithms for massive Bhabha scattering

One- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms, HPLs and GPLs, appear in calculations of multi-loop integrals. We discuss them in the context of analytical solutions for two-loop master integrals in the case of massive Bhabha scattering in QED. For the GPLs we discuss analytical representations, conformal transformations, and also their transformations corresponding to relations between master integrals in the s- and t-channel.

Master integrals for massive two-loop Bhabha scattering in QED

We present a set of scalar master integrals (MIs) needed for a complete treatment of massive two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering in QED, including integrals with arbitrary fermionic loops. The status of analytical solutions for the MIs is reviewed and examples of some methods to solve MIs analytically are worked out in more detail. Analytical results for the pole terms in epsilon of so far unknown box MIs with five internal lines are given.

On master integrals for two loop Bhabha scattering

All scalar master integrals (MIs) for massive 2-loop QED Bhabha scattering are identified. The 2- and 3-point MIs have been calculated in terms of harmonic polylogarithms with the differential equation method. The calculation of 4-point MIs is underway. We sketch some alternative methods which help to solve (mainly) singularities of some MIs.

Automated use of DIANA for two-fermion production at colliders

We describe packages for the calculation of radiative corrections to two-fermion production at colliders. The packages use DIANA, and also QGRAF, FORM, Fortran, and further unix/linux tools. The one-loop calculations in the Standard Model are highly automatized with the package aITALC. Further, the automatic determination of all the matrix elements for two-loop corrections to massive Bhabha scattering in QED and the classification of their topologies and prototypes is done with DIANA. A generalization to the Standard Model is straightforward.

A complete set of scalar master integrals for massive 2-loop Bhabha scattering: where we are

We define a complete set of scalar master integrals (MIs) for massive 2-loop QED Bhabha scattering. Among others, there are thirty three 2-loop box type MIs. Five of them have been published in (semi-)analytical form, one is determined here, the rest remains to be calculated. Further, the last four so far unknown 2-loop 3-point MIs are identified and also computed here.

The Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model and Radiative Corrections to the Muon Decay

A self-consistent version of the left-right (LR) symmetric model is used to examine tree- as well as one-loop level radiative corrections to the muon decay. It is shown that constraints on the heavy sector of the model parameters are different when going beyond tree-level physics. In fact, in our case, the only useful constraints on the model can be obtained from the one-loop level calculation. Furthermore, corrections coming from the subset of SM particles within the LR model have a different structure from their SM equivalent, e.g. the top quark leading term contribution to $Δρ$ within the LR model is different from its SM counterpart. As a consequence, care must be taken in fitting procedures of models beyond the SM, where usually, only tree-level couplings modified by the SM radiative corrections are considered. This procedure is not always correct.

Measuring the FSR--inclusive pi+pi- cross section

Final state radiation (FSR) in pion--pair production cannot be calculated reliably because of the composite structure of the pions. However, FSR corrections have to be taken into account for a precise evaluation of the hadronic contribution to g-2 of the muon. The role of FSR in both energy scan and radiative return experiments is discussed. It is shown how FSR influences the pion form factor extraction from experimental data and, as a consequence, the evaluation of a_mu^had. In fact the O(alpha) FSR corrections should be included to reach the precision we are aiming at. We argue that for an extraction of the desired FSR--inclusive cross section sigma^(gamma)_had a photon--inclusive scan measurement of the ``e+e- to pi+pi- + photons'' cross section is needed. For exclusive scan and radiative return measurements in contrast we have to rely on ad hoc FSR models if we want to obtain either sigma^(gamma)_had or the FSR--exclusive cross section sigma^(0)_had. We thus advocate to consider seriously precise photon--inclusive energy scan measurements at present and future low energy e+e- facilities. Then together with radiative return measurements from DAFNE and BABAR and forthcoming scan measurements at VEPP-2000 we have a good chance to substantially improve the evaluation of a_mu^had in the future.

Matter effects and CP violating neutrino oscillations with non-decoupling heavy neutrinos

The evolution equation for active and sterile neutrinos propagating in general anisotropic or polarized background environment is found and solved for a special case when heavy neutrinos do not decouple, resulting in non-unitary mixing among light neutrino states. Then new CP violating neutrino oscillation effects appear. In contrast to the standard unitary neutrino oscillations these effects can be visible even for two flavour neutrino transitions and even if one of the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix is equal to zero. They do not necessarily vanish with $δm^{2} \to 0$ and they are different for various pairs of flavour neutrino transitions ($ν_e \to ν_μ$), ($ν_μ\to ν_τ$), ($ν_τ\to ν_e$). Neutrino oscillations in vacuum and Earth's matter are calculated for some fixed baseline experiments and a comparison between unitary and non-unitary oscillations are presented. It is shown, taking into account the present experimental constraints, that heavy neutrino states can affect CP and T asymmetries. This is especially true in the case of $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillations.

Muon Decay to One Loop Order in the Left-Right Symmetric Model

One loop corrections to the muon decay are studied in a popular and self-consistent version of the Left-Right symmetric model. It is shown quantitatively, that the corrections do not split into those that come from the Standard Model sector and some decoupling terms. For a heavy Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB) scale of the order of a least 1 TeV, the contributions from the top quark have a logarithmic behaviour and there is a strong quadratic dependence on the heavy Higgs scalar masses. The dependence on the light Higgs boson mass is small. The heavy neutrinos are shown to play an important role, although secondary in comparison with the heavy scalar particles as long as the heavy neutrinos' Majorana Yukawa coupling matrix $h_M$ obeys unitarity bounds.

Pion Pair Production with Higher Order Radiative Corrections in Low Energy e+e- Collisions

The complete one-loop QED initial state, final state and initial--final state interference corrections to the process e+e- -> pi+pi- are presented. Analytic formulae are given for the virtual and for the real photon corrections. The total cross section, the pion angular distribution and the pi+pi- invariant mass distribution are investigated in the regime of experimentally realistic kinematical cuts. It is shown that in addition to the full one-loop corrections also two-loop initial state corrections and even the resummation of higher order soft photon logarithms can be necessary if at least per cent accuracy is required. For the data analysis we focus on an inclusive treatment of all photons. The theoretical error concerning our treatment of radiative corrections is then estimated to be less than 2 per mille for both the measurement of the total cross section and the pi+pi- invariant mass distribution. In addition we discuss the model uncertainty due to the pion substructure. Altogether the precision of the theoretical prediction matches the requirements of low energy e+e- experiments like the ones going on at DAFNE or VEPP-2M.

In Quest of Neutrino Masses at ${\cal{O}}$(eV) Scale

Neutrino oscillation and tritium beta decay experiments taken simultaneously into account are able to access the so far imperceptible absolute neutrino masses at the electronvolt level. The neutrino mass spectrum derived in this way is independent of the nature of neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana). Furthermore, the lack of neutrinoless double beta decay gives additional constraints on the Majorana neutrino mass spectrum. A case of three neutrinos is examined. Influence of different solutions to the solar neutrino deficit problem on the results is discussed. Apart from the present situation, four qualitatively distinct experimental situations which are possible in the future are investigated: when the two decay experiments give only upper bounds on effective neutrino masses, when either one of them gives a positive result, and when both give positive results. The discussion is carried out by taking into account the present experimental errors of relevant neutrino parameters as well as their much more precise expected estimations (e.g. by $ν$ factories). It is shown in which cases the upgraded decay experiments simultaneously with neutrino oscillation data may be able to fix the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum, answer the question of the neutrino nature and put some light on CP phases in the lepton sector.

Nonunitary neutrino mixing matrix and CP violating neutrino oscillations

In the standard approach to the neutrino oscillations a unitary relation among weak and mass eigenstates of light neutrinos is imposed. However, in many extensions of the SM left-handed, active neutrinos mix with additional heavy neutrino states. Consequences of this additional mixing, driven by experimental constraints, on the neutrino oscillations are considered.

Parameters' domain in three flavour neutrino oscillations

We consider analytically the domain of the three mixing angles $Θ_{ij}$ and the CP phase $δ$ for three flavour neutrino oscillations both in vacuum and matter. Similarly to the quark sector, it is necessary and sufficient to let all the mixing angles $Θ_{12},Θ_{13},Θ_{23}$ and $δ$ be in the range $<0,\fracπ{2}>$ and $0 \leq δ< 2 π$, respectively. To exploit the full range of $δ$ will be important in future when more precise fits are possible, even without CP violation measurements. With the above assumption on the angles we can restrict ourselves to the natural order of masses $m_1<m_2<m_3$. Considerations of the mass schemes with some negative $δm^2$'s, though for some reasons useful, are not necessary from the point of view of neutrino oscillation parametrization and cause double counting only. These conclusions are independent of matter effects.

See-saw mechanism and four light neutrino state

A formal proof is given that in a see-saw type neutrino mass matrix with only two neutrino mass scales ($m_D \ll m_R$) and the maximal rank of $m_{R(D)}$, we can not get a fourth light sterile neutrino.

Mass Spectrum and the Nature of Neutrinos

Taking as input the best fit solar neutrino anomaly description, MSW LMA, and the tritium beta decay results we estimate the allowed range of neutrino masses independently of their nature. Adding the present bound on the effective neutrino mass coming from neutrinoless double beta decay, we narrow this range for Majorana neutrinos. We complete the discussion by considering future perspectives on determining the neutrino masses, when the oscillation data will be improved and the next experiments on $(ββ)_{0ν}$ and $^3H$ decay give new bounds or obtain concrete life-times or distortions in the energy distribution.

GENIUS project, neutrino oscillations and Cosmology: neutrinos reveal their nature?

The neutrinoless double beta decay as well as any other laboratory experiment has not been able to answer the question of the neutrino's nature. Hints on the answer are available when neutrino oscillations and $(ββ)_{0 ν}$ are considered simultaneously. In this case phenomenologically interesting neutrino mass schemes can lead to non-vanishing and large values of $ $. As a consequence, some schemes with Majorana neutrinos can be ruled out even now. If we assume that in addition neutrinos contribute to Hot Dark Matter then the window for Majorana neutrinos is even more restricted, e.g. GENIUS experiment will be sensitive to scenarios with three Majorana neutrinos.

Single chargino production with R-parity lepton number violation in electron-electron and muon-muon collisions

We examine single chargino production in conjunction with R-parity lepton number violation in future lepton-lepton collisions. Present bounds on R-parity violating couplings allow for a production cross section of the order of ${\cal{O}} (10 {fb})$ for a wide range of sneutrino and chargino masses. Scenarios of chargino decay which lead to purely leptonic signals in the final state and without missing energy are also discussed.
