Marginal Fermi liquid versus excitonic instability in 3D Dirac semimetals

We study the different phases in the Quantum Electrodynamics of 3D Dirac semimetals depending on the number $N$ of Dirac fermions, using renormalization group methods and the self-consistent resolution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation. We find that, for $N < 4$, a phase with dynamical generation of mass prevails at sufficiently strong coupling, sharing the same physics of the excitonic instability in 2D Dirac semimetals. For $N \geq 4$, we show that the phase diagram has instead a line of critical points characterized by the suppression of the quasiparticle weight at low energies, making the system to fall into the class of marginal Fermi liquids. Such a boundary marks the transition to a kind of strange metal which can be still defined in terms of electron quasiparticles, but with parameters that have large imaginary parts implying an increasing deviation from the conventional Fermi liquid picture.

Rippling transition from electron-induced condensation of curvature field in graphene

A quantum field theory approach is applied to investigate the dynamics of flexural phonons in a metallic membrane like graphene, looking for the effects deriving from the strong interaction between the electronic excitations and elastic deformations. Relying on a self-consistent screening approximation to the phonon self-energy, we show that the theory has a critical point characterized by the vanishing of the effective bending rigidity of the membrane at low momentum. We also check that the instability in the sector of flexural phonons takes place without the development of an in-plane static distortion, which is avoided due to the significant reduction of the electron-phonon couplings for in-plane phonons at large momenta. Furthermore, we analyze the scaling properties of the many-body theory to identify the order parameter that opens up at the point of the transition. We find that the vanishing of the effective bending rigidity and the onset of a nonzero expectation value of the mean curvature are concurrent manifestations of the critical behavior. The results presented here imply that, even in the absence of tension, the theory has a critical point at which the flat geometry becomes an unstable configuration of the metallic membrane, with a condensation of the mean curvature field that may well reproduce the smooth distribution of ripples observed in free-standing graphene.

Dual-band metacomposites containing hybrid Fe and Co-based ferromagnetic microwires

We investigated the microwave properties of polymer based metacomposites containing hybridized parallel Fe- and Co-based microwire arrays. A dual-band left-handed feature was observed in the frequency bands of 1.5 to 5.5 GHz and 9 to 17 GHz, indicated by two transmission windows associated with ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based microwires and long range dipolar resonance between the wire arrays. The plasma frequency after hybridization is significantly increased due to the enhanced effective diameter through the wire-wire interactions between the Fe- and Co- microwire couples. These results offer essential perspectives in designing the multi-band metamaterial for microwave applications such as sensors and cloaking devices.

Metacomposite characteristics and their influential factors of polymer composites containing orthogonal ferromagnetic microwire arrays

The microwave properties of glass-fibers reinforced polymer composite embedded with an orthogonal array of Fe77Si10B10C3 microwires have been investigated. The composites containing orthogonal wire arrays display a remarkable transmission window in the frequency band of 1 to 6 GHz under zero external magnetic field indicating an intrinsic double-negative-index characteristic. The polymer matrices have proved to exert a synergistic effect on the microwave properties, which is responsible for the disappearance of the transmission windows when Ek is perpendicular to the glass fiber direction. The plasma frequency of the orthogonal microwire array composite is higher than that of the parallel microwire array with identical wire spacing; this could be attributed to the enhanced microwire-wave interaction induced by the axial electrical components on the additional layer of perpendicular wires. All these features make this new kind of orthogonal microwire composites promising for potential cloaking and sensing applications.

Magnetic and Kohn-Luttinger instabilities near a Van Hove singularity: monolayer versus twisted bilayer graphene

We investigate the many-body instabilities of electrons interacting near Van Hove singularities arising in monolayer and twisted bilayer graphene. We show that a pairing instability must be dominant over the tendency to magnetic order as the Fermi level is tuned to the Van Hove singularity in the conduction band of graphene. As a result of the extended character of the saddle points in the dispersion, we find that the pairing of the electrons takes place preferentially in a channel of f-wave symmetry, with an order parameter vanishing at the position of the saddle points along the Fermi line. In the case of the twisted bilayers, the dispersion has instead its symmetry reduced down to the C_{3v} group and, most importantly, it leads to susceptibilities that diverge at the saddle points but are integrable along the Fermi line. This implies that a ferromagnetic instability becomes dominant in the twisted graphene bilayers near the Van Hove singularity, with a strength which is amplified as the lowest subband of the electron system becomes flatter for decreasing twist angle.

Is graphene on the edge of being a topological insulator?

We show that, at sufficiently large strength of the long-range Coulomb interaction, a mass term breaking parity (so-called Haldane mass) is dynamically generated in the many-body theory of Dirac fermions describing the graphene layer. While the tendency towards chiral symmetry breaking is stronger than for the dynamical breakdown of parity at spatial dimension D > 2, we find that the situation is reversed at D = 2. The need to regularize the many-body theory in a gauge-invariant manner (taking the limit D = 2 - ε) is what leads to the dominance of the parity-breaking pattern in graphene. We compute the critical coupling for the generation of a parity-breaking mass from the finite radius of convergence of the ladder series supplemented with electron self-energy corrections, finding a value quite close to the effective interaction strength for graphene in vacuum after including Fermi velocity renormalization and static RPA screening of the Coulomb interaction.

Higher-order renormalization of graphene many-body theory

We study the many-body theory of graphene Dirac quasiparticles interacting via the long-range Coulomb potential, taking as a starting point the ladder approximation to different vertex functions. We test in this way the low-energy behavior of the electron system beyond the simple logarithmic dependence of electronic correlators on the high-energy cutoff, which is characteristic of the large-N approximation. We show that the graphene many-body theory is perfectly renormalizable in the ladder approximation, as all higher powers in the cutoff dependence can be absorbed into the redefinition of a finite number of parameters (namely, the Fermi velocity and the weight of the fields) that remain free of infrared divergences even at the charge neutrality point. We illustrate this fact in the case of the vertex for the current density, where a complete cancellation between the cutoff dependences of vertex and electron self-energy corrections becomes crucial for the preservation of the gauge invariance of the theory. The other potentially divergent vertex corresponds to the staggered (sublattice odd) charge density, which is made cutoff independent by a redefinition in the scale of the density operator. This allows to compute a well-defined, scale invariant anomalous dimension to all orders in the ladder series, which becomes singular at a value of the interaction strength marking the onset of chiral symmetry breaking (and gap opening) in the Dirac field theory. The critical coupling we obtain in this way matches with great accuracy the value found with a quite different method, based on the resolution of the gap equation, thus reassuring the predictability of our renormalization approach.

Electron self-energy effects on chiral symmetry breaking in graphene

We investigate the dynamical breakdown of the chiral symmetry in the theory of Dirac fermions in graphene with long-range Coulomb interaction. We analyze the electron-hole vertex relevant for the dynamical gap generation in the ladder approximation, showing that it blows up at a critical value α_c in the graphene fine structure constant which is quite sensitive to many-body corrections. Under static RPA screening of the interaction potential, we find that taking into account electron self-energy corrections to the vertex increases the critical coupling to α_c \approx 4.9, for a number N = 4 of two-component Dirac fermions. When dynamical screening of the interaction is instead considered, the effect of Fermi velocity renormalization in the electron and hole states leads to the value α_c \approx 1.75 for N = 4, substantially larger than that obtained without electron self-energy corrections (\approx 0.99), but still below the nominal value of the interaction coupling in isolated free-standing graphene.

High-pressure Raman spectroscopy and lattice-dynamics calculations on scintillating MgWO4: A comparison with isomorphic compounds

Raman scattering measurements and lattice-dynamics calculations have been performed on magnesium tungstate under high pressure up to 41 GPa. Experiments have been carried out under a selection of different pressure-media. The influence of non-hydrostaticity on the structural properties of MgWO4 and isomorphic compounds is examined. Under quasi-hydrostatic conditions a phase transition has been found at 26 GPa in MgWO4. The high-pressure phase has been tentatively assigned to a triclinic structure similar to that of CuWO4. We also report and discuss the Raman symmetries, frequencies, and pressure coefficients in the low- and high-pressure phases. In addition, the Raman frequencies for different wolframites are compared and the variation of the mode frequency with the reduced mass across the family is investigated. Finally, the accuracy of theoretical calculations is systematically discussed for MgWO4, MnWO4, FeWO4, CoWO4, NiWO4, ZnWO4, and CdWO4.

Screening effects on the excitonic instability in graphene

We investigate the excitonic instability in the theory of Dirac fermions in graphene with long-range Coulomb interaction. We analyze the electron-hole vertex relevant for exciton condensation in the ladder approximation, showing that it blows up at a critical value of the interaction strength α= e^2/4πv_F sensitive to further many-body corrections. Under static screening of the interaction, we find that taking into account electron self-energy corrections increases the critical coupling to α_c \approx 2.09, for a number N = 4 of two-component Dirac fermions. We show that the dynamical screening of the interaction has however the opposite effect of enhancing the instability, which turns out to develop then at α_c \approx 0.99 for N = 4, bringing the question of whether that critical value can be reached by the effective coupling in real graphene samples at the low-energy scales of the exciton condensation.

Renormalization group approach to chiral symmetry breaking in graphene

We investigate the development of a gapped phase in the field theory of Dirac fermions in graphene with long-range Coulomb interaction. In the large-N approximation, we show that the chiral symmetry is only broken below a critical number of two-component Dirac fermions $N_c = 32/π^2$, that is exactly half the value found in quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions. Adopting otherwise a ladder approximation, we give evidence of the existence of a critical coupling at which the anomalous dimension of the order parameter of the transition diverges. This result is consistent with the observation that chiral symmetry breaking may be driven by the long-range Coulomb interaction in the Dirac field theory, despite the divergent scaling of the Fermi velocity in the low-energy limit.

Electron-induced rippling in graphene

We show that the interaction between flexural phonons, when corrected by the exchange of electron-hole excitations, may place the graphene sheet very close to a quantum critical point characterized by the strong suppression of the bending rigidity of the membrane. Ripples arise then due to spontaneous symmetry breaking, following a mechanism similar to that responsible for the condensation of the Higgs field in relativistic field theories. In the presence of membrane tensions, ripple condensation may be reinforced or suppressed depending on the sign of the tension, following a zero-temperature buckling transition in which the order parameter is given essentially by the square of the gradient of the flexural phonon field.

High-pressure structural phase transitions in CuWO4

We study the effects of pressure on the structural, vibrational, and magnetic behavior of cuproscheelite. We performed powder x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy experiments up to 27 GPa as well as ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations. Experiments provide evidence that a structural phase transition takes place at 10 GPa from the low-pressure triclinic phase (P-1) to a monoclinic wolframite-type structure (P2/c). Calculations confirmed this finding and indicate that the phase transformation involves a change in the magnetic order. In addition, the equation of state for the triclinic phase is determined: V0 = 132.8(2) A3, B0 = 139 (6) GPa and = 4. Furthermore, experiments under different stress conditions show that non-hydrostatic stresses induce a second phase transition at 17 GPa and reduce the compressibility of CuWO4, B0 = 171(6) GPa. The pressure dependence of all Raman modes of the triclinic and high-pressure phases is also reported and discussed.

Cropping Euler factors of modular L-functions

According to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures, if A/Q is an abelian variety then its L-function must capture substantial part of the arithmetic properties of A. The smallest number field L where A has all its endomorphisms defined must also have a role. This article deals with the relationship between these two objects in the specific case of modular abelian varieties A_f/Q associated to weight 2 newforms for the modular group Gamma_1(N). Specifically, our goal is to relate the order of L(A_f/Q,s) at s = 1 with Euler products cropped by the set of primes that split completely in L. The results we obtain for the case when f has complex multiplication are complete, while in the absence of CM, our results depend on the rate of convergence in Sato-Tate distributions.

High-pressure phase transitions and compressibility of wolframite-type tungstates

This paper reports an investigation on the phase diagram and compressibility of wolframite-type tungstates by means of x-ray powder diffraction and absorption in a diamond-anvil cell and ab initio calculations. The diffraction experiments show that monoclinic wolframite-type MgWO4 suffers at least two phase transitions, the first one being to a triclinic polymorph with a structure similar to that of CuWO4 and FeMoO4-II. The onset of each transition is detected at 17.1 and 31 GPa. In ZnWO4 the onset of the monoclinic-triclinic transition has been also found at 15.1 GPa. These findings are supported by density-functional theory calculations, which predict the occurrence of additional transitions upon further compression. Calculations have been also performed for wolframite-type MnWO4, which is found to have an antiferromagnetic configuration. In addition, x-ray absorption and diffraction experiments as well as calculations reveal details of the local-atomic compression in the studied compounds. In particular, below the transition pressure the ZnO6 and equivalent polyhedra tend to become more regular, whereas the WO6 octahedra remain almost unchanged. Fitting the pressure-volume data we obtained the equation of state for the low-pressure phase of MgWO4 and ZnWO4. These and previous results on MnWO4 and CdWO4 are compared with the calculations, being the compressibility of wolframite-type tungstates systematically discussed. Finally Raman spectroscopy measurements and lattice dynamics calculations are presented for MgWO4.

Graphene wormholes: A condensed matter illustration of Dirac fermions in curved space

We study the properties of graphene wormholes in which a short nanotube acts as a bridge between two graphene sheets, where the honeycomb carbon lattice is curved from the presence of 12 heptagonal defects. By taking the nanotube bridge with very small length compared to the radius, we develop an effective theory of Dirac fermions to account for the low-energy electronic properties of the wormholes in the continuum limit, where the frustration induced by the heptagonal defects is mimicked by a line of fictitious gauge flux attached to each of them. We find in particular that, when the effective gauge flux from the topological defects becomes maximal, the zero-energy modes of the Dirac equation can be arranged into two triplets, that can be thought as the counterpart of the two triplets of zero modes that arise in the dual instance of the continuum limit of large spherical fullerenes. We further investigate the graphene wormhole spectra by performing a numerical diagonalization of tight-binding hamiltonians for very large lattices realizing the wormhole geometry. The correspondence between the number of localized electronic states observed in the numerical approach and the effective gauge flux predicted in the continuum limit shows that graphene wormholes can be consistently described by an effective theory of two Dirac fermion fields in the curved geometry of the wormhole, opening the possibility of using real samples of the carbon material as a playground to experiment with the interaction between the background curvature and the Dirac fields.

Operating Water Cherenkov Detectors in high altitude sites for the Large Aperture GRB Observatory

Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) are efficient detectors for detecting GRBs in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV energy range using the single particle technique, given their sensitivity to low energy secondary photons produced by high energy photons when cascading in the atmosphere. The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) operates arrays of WCD in high altitude sites (above 4500 m a.s.l.) in Bolivia, Mexico and Venezuela, with planned extension to Peru. Details on the operation and stability of these WCD in remote sites with high background rates of particles will be detailed, and compared to simulations. Specific issues due to operation at high altitude, atmospheric effects and solar activity, as well as possible hardware enhancements will also be presented.
