Electron-electron interactions in graphene sheets

The effects of the electron-electron interactions in a graphene layer are investigated. It is shown that short range couplings are irrelevant, and scale towards zero at low energies, due to the vanishing of density of states at the Fermi level. Topological disorder enhances the density of states, and can lead to instabilities. In the presence of sufficiently strong repulsive interactions, p-wave superconductivity can emerge.

Microscopic description of d-wave superconductivity by Van Hove nesting in the Hubbard model

We devise a computational approach to the Hubbard model that captures the strong coupling dynamics arising when the Fermi level is at a Van Hove singularity in the density of states. We rely on an approximate degeneracy among the many-body states accounting for the main instabilities of the system (antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity). The Fermi line turns out to be deformed in a manner consistent with the pinning of the Fermi level to the Van Hove singularity. For a doping rate $δ\sim 0.2$, the ground state is characterized by d-wave symmetry, quasiparticles gapped only at the saddle-points of the band, and a large peak at zero momentum in the d-wave pairing correlations.

Charge-density-wave formation by Van Hove nesting in the α-phase of Sn/Ge(111)

We study the role of electron correlations in the formation of the surface charge-density-wave state in the Sn/Ge(111) interface. The Fermi energy of the overlayer is treated as a dynamical variable, which undergoes a substantial renormalization by the interaction. We show that the Fermi level turns out to be pinned to a Van Hove singularity in the density of states, which explains the formation of the charge-density-wave, the observation of a very flat band in photoemission experiments and the reduction of the spectral weight in the low-temperature phase.

Anisotropic Fermi surfaces and Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity in two dimensions

The instabilities induced on a two-dimensional system of correlated electrons by the anisotropies of its Fermi line are analyzed on general grounds. Simple scaling arguments allow to predict the opening of a superconducting gap with a well-defined symmetry prescribed by the geometry of the Fermi line. The same arguments predict a critical dimension of 3/2 for the transition of the two-dimensional system to non-Fermi liquid behavior. The methods are applied to the t-t' Hubbard model in a wide range of dopings.

Finite-size scaling and conformal anomaly of the Ising model in curved space

We study the finite-size scaling of the free energy of the Ising model on lattices with the topology of the tetrahedron and the octahedron. Our construction allows to perform changes in the length scale of the model without altering the distribution of the curvature in the space. We show that the subleading contribution to the free energy follows a logarithmic dependence, in agreement with the conformal field theory prediction. The conformal anomaly is given by the sum of the contributions computed at each of the conical singularities of the space, except when perfect order of the spins is precluded by frustration in the model.

Kinematics of electrons near a Van Hove singularity

A two dimensional electronic system, where the Fermi surface is close to a Van Hove singularity, shows a variety of weak coupling instabilities, and it is a convenient model to study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and anisotropic superconductivity. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of the electron scattering in this model. The similitudes, and differences, between a standard Renormalization Group approach and previous work based on parquet summations of log$^2$ divergences are analyzed, with emphasis on the underlying physical processes. General properties of the phase diagram are discussed.

On the Coulomb interaction in chiral-invariant one-dimensional electron systems

We consider a one-dimensional electron system, suitable for the description of the electronic correlations in a metallic carbon nanotube. Renormalization group methods are used to study the low-energy behavior of the unscreened Coulomb interaction between currents of well-defined chirality. In the limit of a very large number n of subbands we find a strong renormalization of the Fermi velocity, reminiscent of a similar phenomenon in the graphite sheet. For small n or sufficiently low energy, the Luttinger liquid behavior takes over, with a strong wavefunction renormalization leading to a vanishing quasiparticle weight. Our approach is appropriate to study the crossover from two-dimensional to one-dimensional behavior in carbon nanotubes of large radius.

Marginal Fermi liquid behavior from 2d Coulomb interaction

A full, nonperturbative renormalization group analysis of interacting electrons in a graphite layer is performed, in order to investigate the deviations from Fermi liquid theory that have been observed in the experimental measures of a linear quasiparticle decay rate in graphite. The electrons are coupled through Coulomb interactions, which remain unscreened due to the semimetallic character of the layer. We show that the model flows towards the noninteracting fixed-point for the whole range of couplings, with logarithmic corrections which signal the marginal character of the interaction separating Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid regimes.

Phase Diagram of High-T_c Superconductors from a Field Theory Model

The renormalization group approach to correlated fermions is used to determine the phase diagram of the oxide cuprates modeled by the t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove filling. Spin-dependent interactions give rise to instabilities corresponding to ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity arise from the same interactions, and compete in the same region of parameter space.

Renormalization of the Coulomb interaction in one-dimensional electron systems

Renormalization group methods are used to study the low-energy behavior of the unscreened Coulomb interaction in a one-dimensional electron system. By applying a GW approximation, a strong wavefunction renormalization is found in the model, as well as renormalization of the Fermi velocity. This may have significant effects depending on the filling level of the system. The effective couplings remain bounded at arbitrarily low energies so that, in spite of the long-range character of the interaction, the system still falls into the Luttinger liquid universality class.

Superconducting, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in the t-t' Hubbard model

We apply a renormalization group approach to the determination of the phase diagram of the t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove filling, as function of t'/t, for small values of U/t. The model presents ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity arise from the same interactions, and compete in the same region of parameter space.

Instability of Anisotropic Fermi Surfaces in Two Dimensions

The effect of strong anisotropy on the Fermi line of a system of correlated electrons is studied in two space dimensions, using renormalization group techniques. Inflection points change the scaling exponents of the couplings, enhancing the instabilities of the system. They increase the critical dimension for non Fermi liquid behavior, from 1 to 3/2. Assuming that, in the absence of nesting, the dominant instability is towards a superconducting ground state, simple rules to discern between d-wave and extended s-wave symmetry of the order parameter are given.

Strong coupling phases of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model

We study the strong coupling regime of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model, filled up to the level of the van Hove singularities, by means of an exact diagonalization approach. We characterize the different phases of the model by the different sectors of the Hilbert space with given quantum numbers. By looking for the ground state of the system, we find essentially the competition between a state with incipient ferromagnetism and other mimicking a $d$-wave condensate, which has the lowest energy in a large region of the phase space.

Unconventional quasiparticle lifetime in graphite

The influence of electron-electron scattering on quasiparticle lifetimes in graphite is calculated. In the limit when the Fermi surface is reduced to isolated points in the Brillouin Zone, the suppression of screening leads to non Fermi liquid behavior. The inverse lifetime increases linearly with energy, in agreement with recent experiments. Similar features should also be present in narrow gap semiconductors, and in carbon nanotubes.

Renormalization Group Approach to the Normal State of Copper-Oxide Superconductors

We study by means of renormalization group techniques the effect that on the two-dimensional electron liquid may have the van Hove singularities observed experimentally in the copper-oxide superconductors. We find significant deviations from Fermi liquid behavior, that lead to the appearance of an unstable fixed point in the renormalization group flow of the effective coupling constant. Besides the attenuation of electron quasiparticles already known on phenomenological grounds, our approach is able to explain the reduction in the dispersion of the band as well as the pinning of the Fermi level near the singularity, as observed in the photoemission experiments.

Nonperturbative approach to the Hubbard model in C60 cluster

We propose a computational scheme for the Hubbard model in the C60 cluster in which the interaction with the Fermi sea of charges added to the neutral molecule is switched on sequentially. This is applied to the calculation of the balance of charging energies, within a low-energy truncation of the space of states which produces moderate errors for an intermediate range of the interaction strength.

Renormalization group analysis of electrons near a Van Hove singularity.

A model of interacting two dimensional electrons near a Van Hove singularity is studied, using renormalization group techniques. In hole doped systems, the chemical potential is found to be pinned near the singularity, when the electron-electron interactions are repulsive. The RG treatment of the leading divergences appearing in perturbation theory give rise to marginal behavior and anisotropic superconductivity.
