Spontaneous magnetic field and disorder effects in BaPtAs_1-x_Sb_x_ with honeycomb network

Chiral superconductivity exhibits the formation of novel electron pairs that breaks the time-reversal symmetry and has been actively studied in various quantum materials in recent years. However, despite its potential to provide definitive information, effects of disorder in the crystal structure on the chiral superconductivity has not yet been clarified, and therefore the investigation using a solid-solution system is desirable. We report muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) results of layered pnictide BaPtAs_1-x_Sb_x_ with a honeycomb network composed of Pt and (As, Sb). We observed an increase of the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate in the superconducting (SC) state at the Sb end of x=1.0, suggesting the occurrence of spontaneous magnetic field due to the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the SC state. On the other hand, spontaneous magnetic field was almost and completely suppressed for the As-Sb mixed samples of x=0.9 and 0.2, respectively, suggesting that the time-reversal symmetry breaking SC state in x=1.0 is sensitive to disorder. The magnetic penetration depth estimated from transverse-field muSR measurements at x=1.0 and 0.2 behaved like weak-coupling s-wave superconductivity. These seemingly incompatible zero-field and transverse-field muSR results of BaPtAs_1-x_Sb_x_ with x=1.0 could be understood in terms of chiral d-wave superconductivity with point nodes on the three-dimensional Fermi surface.

Evidence for Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Broken Superconductivity in Locally Noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onset of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect in s-wave Superconducting State: Analysis of Rashba Model

A general expression for the spin Hall conductivity (SHC) in the s-wave superconducting state at finite temperatures is derived. Based on the expression, we study the SHC in a two-dimensional electron gas model in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The SHC is zero in the normal state, whereas it takes a large negative value as soon as the superconductivity occurs, due to the change in the quasiparticle contributions. Since this remarkable behavior is independent of the strength of the SOI, it will be widely observed in thin films of superconductors with surface-induced Rashba SOI, or in various non-centrosymmetric superconductors.

Multiple Superconducting Phases in New Heavy Fermion Superconductor PrOs4Sb12

The superconducting gap structure of recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was investigated by using thermal transport measurements in magnetic field rotated relative to the crystal axes. We demonstrate that a novel change in the symmetry of the superconducting gap function occurs deep inside the superconducting state, giving a clear indication of the presence of two distinct superconducting phases with twofold and fourfold symmetries. We infer that the gap functions in both phases have a point node singularity, in contrast to the familiar line node singularity observed in almost all unconventional superconductors.

Polarization of Bloch electrons and Berry phase in the presence of electromagnetic fields

We consider Bloch electrons in the presence of the uniform electromagnetic field in two- and three-dimensions. It is renowned that the quantized Hall effect occurs in such systems. We suppose a weak and homogeneous electric field represented by the time-dependent vector potential which is changing adiabatically. The adiabatic process can be closed in the parameter space and a Berry phase is generated. In the system, one can define the macroscopic electric polarization whose time derivative is equivalent to the quantized Hall current and its conductivity is written by the Chern number. Then, the polarization is induced perpendicular to the electric field. We show that the induced polarization per a cycle in the parameter space is quantized and closely related to the Berry phase as well as the Chern number. The process is adiabatic and the system always remains the ground state, then, the polarization is quite different from the usual dielectric polarization and has some similarity to the spontaneous polarization in the crystalline dielectrics which is also written by the Berry phase. We also point out the relation between our results and the adiabatic pumping.

Berry phase and quantized Hall effect in three-dimension

We consider Bloch electrons in the electromagnetic field and argue the relation between the Berry phase and the quantized Hall conductivity in three-dimension. The Berry phase we consider here is induced by the adiabatic change of the time-dependent vector potential. The relation has been shown in two-dimensional systems, and we generalize the relation in three-dimensional systems.

Chiral Correction to the Spin Fluctuation Feedback in two-dimensional p-wave Superconductors

We consider the stability of the superconducting phase for spin-triplet p-wave pairing in a quasi-two-dimensional system. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling there is a chiral contribution to spin fluctuation feedback which is related to spin quantum Hall effect in a chiral superconducting phase. We show that this mechanism supports the stability of a chiral p-wave state.

Axial Anomaly Effect in Chiral p-wave Superconductor

We analyze the chiral p-wave superconductor in the low temperature region. The superconductor has a epsilon_{x} p_{x} + i epsilon_{y} p_{y}-wave gap in two dimensional space (2D). Near the second superconducting transition point, the system could be described by a quasi-1D chiral p-wave model in 2D. The axial anomaly occurs in such a model and causes an accumulation of the quasiparticle in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The effect is related to the winding number of the gap.

Chiral feedback for p-wave superconductors

In a quasi-two-dimensional $ p $-wave superconductor there find six Cooper pairing states which are degenerate within the weak-coupling approach. We show that this degeneracy can be lifted by feedback effect favoring the so-called chiral $ p $-wave state. This effect is based on the anomalous coupling between charge and current in a system with broken time reversal symmetry and parity.

Axial Anomaly in Quasi-1D Chiral Superfluids

The axial anomaly in a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) chiral p-wave superfluid model, which has a epsilon_{x} p_{x}+i epsilon_{y} p_{y}-wave gap in 2D is studied. The anomaly causes an accumulation of the quasiparticle and a quantized chiral current density in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. These effects are related to the winding number of the gap. By varying the parameters epsilon_{x} and epsilon_{y}, the model could be applicable to Sr2RuO4 near the second superconducting transition point, some quasi-1D organic superconductors and the fractional quantum Hall state at nu = 5 / 2 Landau level filling factor.

Vortex with Fractional Quantum Numbers in Chiral p-Wave Superconductor

We show that a vortex in a chiral p-wave superconductor, which has the p_{x}+ i p_{y}-wave pairing state and breaks U(1), parity and time reversal symmetry simultaneously, has fractional charge -{n e}/{4} and fractional angular momentum -n^{2}/{16} (n; vorticity). This suggests that the vortex could be anyon and could obey fractional statistics. Electromagnetic property of the vortex is also discussed and we find that an electric field is induced near the vortex core.

Vortex in Chiral Superconducting State

We have investigated the vortex in chiral superconductors, especially in p-wave case. In chiral superconductors the Cooper pair has orbital angular momentum hence U(1), parity (P) and time reversal symmetry (T) are broken simultaneously. We have found that the vortex has fractional charge and fractional angular momentum which comes from P- and T-violation. The fractionalization of the angular momentum suggests that the vortex could be anyon which obeys the fractional statistics. We have also pointed out that the electric field is induced near the vortex core and non-trivial electromagnetic phenomena are expected to occur.

Observation of Induced Chern-Simons Term in P- and T- violating Superconductors

We show in this letter that P- and T-odd terms of the electromagnetic potentials (P; parity, T; time reversal) are induced and lead an unusual phenomenon in P- and T-violating superconductors discovered recently. The Ginzburg-Landau action includes this term in the gauge invariant manner. The coefficient of the term is nearly topological invariant with a small correction and equals to the fine structure constant approximately. Unusual ``Hall effect'' {\it without external} magnetic field could be observed by SQUID.

E-B Mixing in T-violating Superconductors

We analyze time reversal violating processes of the p-wave superconductor. The Landau-Ginzuburg effective action has an induced T-violating term of electromagnetic potentials which resembles the Chern-Simons term and causes a mixing between the electric field and the magnetic field. Several T-violating electromagnetic phenomena caused by this term, such as unusual Meissner effect, Hall effect without magnetic field, and Farady rotation without magnetic field are investigated.

Abelian Chern-Simons Term in Superfluid 3He-A

We show in this paper that Abelian Chern-Simons term is induced in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional rotating superfluid $^{3}$He-A and plays important roles in its dynamics. Because U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken in $^{3}$He-A, Goldstone mode appears and contributes to induced Chern-Simons term. We found that the coefficient of Chern-Simons term, which is equivalent to Hall conductance, depends on an infra-red cut off of the Goldstone mode, and that the orbital angular momentum of $^{3}$He-A in a cylinder geometry is derived from Chern-Simons term.
