Improved performance of the LHCb Outer Tracker in LHC Run 2

The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of $5\times 6 m^2$ with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The performance of the detector is presented based on data of the LHC Run 2 running period from 2015 and 2016. Occupancies and operational experience for data collected in $p p$, pPb and PbPb collisions are described. An updated study of the ageing effects is presented showing no signs of gain deterioration or other radiation damage effects. In addition several improvements with respect to LHC Run 1 data taking are introduced. A novel real-time calibration of the time-alignment of the detector and the alignment of the single monolayers composing detector modules are presented, improving the drift-time and position resolution of the detector by 20\%. Finally, a potential use of the improved resolution for the timing of charged tracks is described, showing the possibility to identify low-momentum hadrons with their time-of-flight.

Introduction to graded bundles

We review the concept of a graded bundle as a natural generalisation of a vector bundle. Such geometries are particularly nice examples of more general graded manifolds. With hindsight there are many examples of graded bundles that appear in the existing literature. We start with a discussion of graded spaces, passing through graded bundles and their linearisation to end with weighted (graded) Lie groupoids/algebroids.

New developments in geometric mechanics

We review the concept of a graded bundle, which is a generalisation of a vector bundle, its linearisation, and a double structure of this kind. We then present applications of these structures in geometric mechanics including systems with higher order Lagrangian and the Plateau problem.

Geometry of Lie integrability by quadratures

In this paper we extend the Lie theory of integration in two different ways. First we consider a finite dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields and discuss the most general conditions under which the integral curves of one of the fields can be obtained by quadratures in a prescribed way. It turns out that the conditions can be expressed in a purely algebraic way. In a second step we generalize the construction to the case in which we substitute the Lie algebra of vector fields by a module (generalized distribution). We obtain much larger class of integrable systems replacing standard concepts of solvable (or nilpotent) Lie algebra with distributional solvability (nilpotency).

Dirac--Lie systems and Schwarzian equations

A Lie system is a system of differential equations admitting a superposition rule, i.e., a function describing its general solution in terms of any generic set of particular solutions and some constants. Following ideas going back to the Dirac's description of constrained systems, we introduce and analyse a particular class of Lie systems on Dirac manifolds, called Dirac--Lie systems, which are associated with `Dirac--Lie Hamiltonians'. Our results enable us to investigate constants of the motion, superposition rules, and other general properties of such systems in a more effective way. Several concepts of the theory of Lie systems are adapted to this `Dirac setting' and new applications of Dirac geometry in differential equations are presented. As an application, we analyze traveling wave solutions of Schwarzian equations, but our methods can be applied also to other classes of differential equations important for Physics.

Superposition rules for higher-order systems and their applications

Superposition rules form a class of functions that describe general solutions of systems of first-order ordinary differential equations in terms of generic families of particular solutions and certain constants. In this work we extend this notion and other related ones to systems of higher-order differential equations and analyse their properties. Several results concerning the existence of various types of superposition rules for higher-order systems are proved and illustrated with examples extracted from the physics and mathematics literature. In particular, two new superposition rules for second- and third-order Kummer--Schwarz equations are derived.

Lie superalgebras of differential operators

We describe explicitly Lie superalgebra isomorphisms between the Lie superalgebras of first-order superdifferential operators on supermanifolds, showing in particular that any such isomorphism induces a diffeomorphism of the supermanifolds. We also prove that the group of automorphisms of such a Lie superalgebra is a semi-direct product of the subgroup induced by the supermanifold diffeomorphisms and another subgroup which consists of automorphisms determined by even superdivergences. These superdivergences are proven to exist on any supermanifold and their local form is explicitly described as well

Nonholonomic Constraints: a New Viewpoint

The purpose of this paper is to show that, at least for Lagrangians of mechanical type, nonholonomic Euler-Lagrange equations for a nonholonomic linear constraint D may be viewed as non-constrained Euler-Lagrange equations but on a new (generally not Lie) algebroid structure on D. The proposed novel formalism allows us to treat in a unified way a variety of situations in nonholonomic mechanics and gives rise to a version of Neoether Theorem producing actual first integrals in case of symmetries.

Geometrical Mechanics on algebroids

A natural geometric framework is proposed, based on ideas of W. M. Tulczyjew, for constructions of dynamics on general algebroids. One obtains formalisms similar to the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian ones. In contrast with recently studied concepts of Analytical Mechanics on Lie algebroids, this approach requires much less than the presence of a Lie algebroid structure on a vector bundle, but it still reproduces the main features of the Analytical Mechanics, like the Euler-Lagrange-type equations, the correspondence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions (Legendre transform) in the hyperregular cases, and a version of the Noether Theorem. Besides, the constructions seem to be more natural and simpler.

Jacobi structures on affine bundles

We study affine Jacobi structures on an affine bundle $π:A\to M$, i.e. Jacobi brackets that close on affine functions. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between affine Jacobi structures on $A$ and Lie algebroid structures on the vector bundle $A^+=\bigcup_{p\in M}Aff(A_p,\R)$ of affine functionals. Some examples and applications, also for the linear case, are discussed. For a special type of affine Jacobi structures which are canonically exhibited (strongly-affine or affine-homogeneous Jacobi structures) over a real vector space of finite dimension, we describe the leaves of its characteristic foliation as the orbits of an affine representation. These affine Jacobi structures can be viewed as an analog of the Kostant-Arnold-Liouville linear Poisson structure on the dual space of a real finite-dimensional Lie algebra.

Frame-independent mechanics:geometry on affine bundles

Main ideas of the differential geometry on affine bundles are presented. Affine counterparts of Lie algebroid and Poisson structures are introduced and discussed. The developed concepts are applied in a frame-independent formulation of the time-dependent and the Newtonian mechanics.

Derivations of the Lie Algebras of Differential Operators

This paper encloses a complete and explicit description of the derivations of the Lie algebra D(M) of all linear differential operators of a smooth manifold M, of its Lie subalgebra D^1(M) of all linear first-order differential operators of M, and of the Poisson algebra S(M)=Pol(T*M) of all polynomial functions on T*M, the symbols of the operators in D(M). It turns out that, in terms of the Chevalley cohomology, H^1(D(M),D(M))=H^1_{DR}(M), H^1(D^1(M),D^1(M))=H^1_{DR}(M)\oplus\R^2, and H^1(S(M),S(M))=H^1_{DR}(M)\oplus\R. The problem of distinguishing those derivations that generate one-parameter groups of automorphisms and describing these one-parameter groups is also solved.

Poisson-Jacobi reduction of homogeneous tensors

The notion of homogeneous tensors is discussed. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between multivector fields on a manifold $M$, homogeneous with respect to a vector field $Δ$ on $M$, and first-order polydifferential operators on a closed submanifold $N$ of codimension 1 such that $Δ$ is transversal to $N$. This correspondence relates the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket of multivector fields on $M$ to the Schouten-Jacobi bracket of first-order polydifferential operators on $N$ and generalizes the Poissonization of Jacobi manifolds. Actually, it can be viewed as a super-Poissonization. This procedure of passing from a homogeneous multivector field to a first-order polydifferential operator can be also understood as a sort of reduction; in the standard case -- a half of a Poisson reduction. A dual version of the above correspondence yields in particular the correspondence between $Δ$-homogeneous symplectic structures on $M$ and contact structures on $N$.

Contractions: Nijenhuis and Saletan tensors for general algebraic structures

Generalizations in many directions of the contraction procedure for Lie algebras introduced by E.J.Saletan are proposed. Products of arbitrary nature, not necessarily Lie brackets, are considered on sections of finite-dimensional vector bundles. Saletan contractions of such infinite-dimensional algebras are obtained via a generalization of the Nijenhuis tensor approach. In particular, this procedure is applied to Lie algebras, Lie algebroids, and Poisson structures. There are also results on contractions of n-ary products and coproducts.

Non-antisymmetric versions of Nambu-Poisson and Lie algebroids

We show that one can skip the skew-symmetry assumption in the definition of Nambu-Poisson brackets. In other words, a n-ary bracket on the algebra of smooth functions which satisfies the Leibniz rule and a n-ary version of the Jacobi identity must be skew-symmetric. A similar result holds for a non-antisymmetric version of Lie algebroids.

Poisson structures on double Lie groups

Lie bialgebra structures are reviewed and investigated in terms of the double Lie algebra, of Manin- and Gauß-decompositions. The standard R-matrix in a Manin decomposition then gives rise to several Poisson structures on the correponding double group, which is investigated in great detail.
