Rapidity dependence of deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We have measured the distributions of protons and deuterons produced in high energy heavy ion Au+Au collisions at RHIC over a very wide range of transverse and longitudinal momentum. Near mid-rapidity we have also measured the distribution of anti-protons and anti-deuterons. We present our results in the context of coalescence models. In particular we extract the "volume of homogeneity" and the average phase-space density for protons and anti-protons. Near central rapidity the coalescence parameter $B_2(p_T)$ and the space averaged phase-space density $ (p_T)$ are very similar for both protons and anti-protons. For protons we see little variation of either $B_2(p_T)$ or the space averaged phase-space density as the rapidity increases from 0 to 3. However both these quantities depend strongly on $p_T$ at all rapidities. These results are in contrast to lower energy data where the proton and anti-proton phase-space densities are different at $y$=0 and both $B_2$ and $f$ depend strongly on rapidity.

Realtime calibration of the A4 electromagnetic lead fluoride calorimeter

Sufficient energy resolution is the key issue for the calorimetry in particle and nuclear physics. The calorimeter of the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI is a segmented calorimeter where the energy of an event is determined by summing the signals of neighbouring channels. In this case the precise matching of the individual modules is crucial to obtain a good energy resolution. We have developped a calibration procedure for our total absorbing electromagnetic calorimeter which consists of 1022 lead fluoride (PbF_2) crystals. This procedure reconstructs the the single-module contributions to the events by solving a linear system of equations, involving the inversion of a 1022 x 1022-matrix. The system has shown its functionality at beam energies between 300 and 1500 MeV and represents a new and fast method to keep the calorimeter permanently in a well-calibrated state.

First-principles investigation of the very large Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy at Fe|MgO Interfaces

The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arising at the interface between ferromagnetic transition metals and metallic oxides are investigated via first-principles calculations. In this work very large values of PMA up to 3 erg/cm$^2$ at Fe$|$MgO interfaces are reported in agreement with recent experiments. The origin of PMA is attributed to overlap between O-$p_z$ and transition metal $d_{z^2}$ orbitals hybridized with $d_{xz(yz)}$ orbitals with stronger spin-orbit coupling induced splitting around the Fermi level for perpendicular magnetization orientation. Furthemore, it is shown that the PMA value weakens in case of over- or underoxidation when oxygen $p_z$ and transition metal $d_{z^2}$ orbitals overlap is strongly affected by disorder, in agreement with experimental observations in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Physics Program with Tagged Forward Protons at STAR/RHIC

A new effort to explore the diffractive regime in polarized $p+p$ collisions in a broad high energy range ($\sqrt{s}$ = 200 - 500 GeV) has been initiated with the STAR detector at RHIC. Staged implementation of multiple Roman Pot stations for tagging the forward proton in the diffractive processes will enable searches for the centrally produced for the possible gluon bound state via double Pomeron exchange process and the theoretically expected Odderon state in QCD by studying spin-dependent elastic scattering in a wide $t$-range with polarized $p+p$.

Measurement of Strange Quark Contributions to the Vector Form Factors of the Proton at Q**2=0.22 (GeV/c)**2

A new measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering on hydrogen at backward angles and at a four momentum transfer of Q^2=0.22 (GeV/c)^2 is reported here. The measured asymmetry is A_LR=(-17.23 +- 0.82_stat +-0.89_syst) ppm. The Standard Model prediction assuming no strangeness is A_0=(-15.87 +- 1.22) ppm. In combination with previous results from measurements at forward angles, it it possible to disentangle for the first time the strange electric and magnetic form factors at this momentum transfer, G_E^s(0.22)=0.050 +- 0.038 +- 0.019 and G_M^s(0.22)=-0.14 +- 0.11 +- 0.11.

Accurate Microwave Control and Real-Time Diagnostics of Neutral Atom Qubits

We demonstrate accurate single-qubit control in an ensemble of atomic qubits trapped in an optical lattice. The qubits are driven with microwave radiation, and their dynamics tracked by optical probe polarimetry. Real-time diagnostics is crucial to minimize systematic errors and optimize the performance of single-qubit gates, leading to fidelities of 0.99 for single-qubit pi rotations. We show that increased robustness to large, deliberately introduced errors can be achieved through the use of composite rotations. However, during normal operation the combination of very small intrinsic errors and additional decoherence during the longer pulse sequences precludes any significant performance gain in our current experiment.

Electronic structures of hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films

We investigated the electronic structure of multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films using both optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Using artificially stabilized hexagonal RMnO3, we extended the optical spectroscopic studies on the hexagonal multiferroic manganite system. We observed two optical transitions located near 1.7 eV and 2.3 eV, in addition to the predominant absorption above 5 eV. With the help of first-principles calculations, we attribute the low-lying optical absorption peaks to inter-site transitions from the oxygen states hybridized strongly with different Mn orbital symmetries to the Mn 3d3z2-r2 state. As the ionic radius of the rare earth ion increased, the lowest peak showed a systematic increase in its peak position. We explained this systematic change in terms of a flattening of the MnO5 triangular bipyramid.

Limits on WIMP-nucleon interactions with CsI(Tl) crystal detectors

The Korea Invisible Mass Search(KIMS) experiment presents new limits on WIMP-nucleon cross section using the data from an exposure of 3409 kgd taken with low background CsI(Tl) crystals at Yangyang underground laboratory. The most stringent limit on the spin dependent interaction for pure proton case is obtained. The DAMA signal region for both spin independent and spin dependent interactions for the WIMP mass higher than 20 GeV/c^2are excluded by the single experiment with crystal scintillators.

Modelling formation and evolution of transverse dune fields

We model formation and evolution of transverse dune fields. In the model, only the cross section of the dune is simulated. The only physical variable of relevance is the dune height, from which the dune width and velocity are determined, as well as phenomenological rules for interaction between two dunes of different heights. We find that dune fields with no sand on the ground between dunes are unstable, i.e. small dunes leave the higher ones behind. We then introduce a saturation length to simulate transverse dunes on a sand bed and show that this leads to stable dune fields with regular spacing and dune heights. Finally, we show that our model can be used to simulate coastal dune fields if a constant sand influx is considered, where the dune height increases with the distance from the beach, reaching a constant value.

Magnetoelectric effects of nanoparticulate Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-NiFe2O4 composite films

We fabricated Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-NiFe2O4 composite films consisting of randomly dispersed NiFe2O4 nanoparticles in the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 matrix. The structural analysis revealed that the crystal axes of the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles are aligned with those of the ferroelectric matrix. The composite has good ferroelectric and magnetic properties. We measured the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, which supports the postulate that the magnetoelectric effect comes from direct stress coupling between magnetostrictive NiFe2O4 and piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 grains.

Magnetization damping in polycrystalline Co ultra-thin films: Evidence for non-local effects

The magnetic properties and magnetization dynamics of polycrystalline ultra-thin Co layers were investigated using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique at room temperature. A variable thickness (1 nm $\leq t \leq$ 10 nm) Co layer is sandwiched between 10 nm thick Cu layers (10 nm Cu| t Co|10 nm Cu), while materials in contact with the Cu outer interfaces are varied to determine their influence on the magnetization damping. The resonance field and the linewidth were studied for in-plane magnetic fields in field swept experiments at a fixed frequency, from 4 to 25 GHz. The Co layers have a lower magnetization density than the bulk, and an interface contribution to the magnetic anisotropy normal to the film plane. The Gilbert damping, as determined from the frequency dependence of the linewidth, increases with decreasing Co layer thickness for films with outer Pt layers. This enhancement is not observed in structures without Pt layers. The result can be understood in terms of a non-local contribution to the damping due to spin pumping from Co through the Cu layer and spin relaxation in Pt layers. Pt layers just 1.5 nm thick are found to be sufficient to enhance the damping and thus act as efficient "spin-sinks". In structures with Pt outer layers, this non-local contribution to the damping becomes predominant when the Co layer is thinner than 4 nm.

Rapidity dependence of high p_T suppression at sqrt{s_{NN}}=62.4{GeV}

We present measurements of charged hadron p_T spectra from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(snn)=62.4 GeV for pseudorapidities eta=0, eta=1 and eta=3.2. Around midrapidity (eta=0, eta=1) we find nuclear modification factors at levels suggesting a smaller degree of high p_T suppression than in the same reaction at higher energy sqrt(snn)=200 GeV. At the high pseudorapidity, eta=3.2, where nuclear modification factors cannot be constructed due to the lack of p+p reference data, we find a significant reduction of R_{CP} (central to peripheral ratio) as compared to midrapidity.

Ferroelectric properties of SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 ultrathin film capacitors free from passive lay

Structural studies on ultrathin SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 capacitors, with BaTiO3 thicknesses of between 5 nm and 30 nm, show well-defined interfaces between ferroelectric BaTiO3 and electrode SrRuO3 layers. In these capacitors, we cannot observe any extrinsic electrical effects due to either the formation of an insulating interfacial passive layer or passive-layer-induced charge injection. Such high quality interfaces result in very good fatigue endurance, even for the 5 nm thick BaTiO3 capacitor.

A high power liquid hydrogen target for the Mainz A4 parity violation experiment

We present a new powerful liquid hydrogen target developed for the precise study of parity violating electron scattering on hydrogen and deuterium. This target has been designed to have minimal target density fluctuations under the heat load of a 20$μ$A CW 854.3 MeV electron beam without rastering the electron beam. The target cell has a wide aperture for scattered electrons and is axially symmetric around the beam axis. The construction is optimized to intensify heat exchange by a transverse turbulent mixing in the hydrogen stream, which is directed along the electron beam. The target is constructed as a closed loop circulating system cooled by a helium refrigerator. It is operated by a tangential mechanical pump with an optional natural convection mode. The cooling system supports up to 250 watts of the beam heating removal. Deeply subcooled liquid hydrogen is used for keeping the in-beam temperature below the boiling point. The target density fluctuations are found to be at the level 10$^{-3}$ at a beam current of 20 $μ$A.

A luminosity monitor for the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI

A water Cherenkov luminosity monitor system with associated electronics has been developed for the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI. The detector system measures the luminosity of the hydrogen target hit by the MAMI electron beam and monitors the stability of the liquid hydrogen target. Both is required for the precise study of the count rate asymmetries in the scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized protons. Any helicity correlated fluctuation of the target density leads to false asymmetries. The performance of the luminosity monitor, investigated in about 2000 hours with electron beam, and the results of its application in the A4 experiment are presented.

Accurate Measurements of the Intrinsic Surface Impedance of Thin YBCO Films Using a Modified Two-tone Resonator Method

We propose a modified two-tone method that could be used for sensitive measurements of the intrinsic microwave surface impedance (Zs) of thin superconductor films and the tand of a low-loss dielectric. An open-gap resonator scheme is used to measure the penetration depth of thin superconductor films and extract the intrinsic Zs of the superconductor films from its measured effective surface resistance and penetration depth. We use a very small gap of 10 um between the top plate and the rest parts of the resonator. The loss tangent of rutile in the low 10^-7 range and the dielectric constant as high as ~110 are observed at temperatures below 10 K at ~15.2 GHz, which enable to measure the Rs of the 10 mm-in-diameter YBCO films as low as \~100 micro-ohm at the same frequency (f). The discrepancy between the effective surface resistance at ~15.2 GHz and that at ~8.5 GHz scaled to ~15.2 GHz appears less than 6 % when the relations of Rs ~ f^2 and loss tangent ~ f are used. We describe usefulness of our measurement method for measuring the intrinsic microwave properties of various superconductor samples.
