A new family of iron pnictides: BaFeAs2 and BaFeSb2

We investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the hypothetical compound BaFePn2 (Pn = As and Sb), which is isostructural to the parent compound of the high temperature superconductor LaFeAsO1-xFx. Using density functional theory, we show that the Fermi surface, electronic structure and the spin density wave instability of BaFePn2 are very similar to the Fe based superconductors. Additionally, there are very dispersive metallic bands of a spacer Pn layer, which are almost decoupled from FePn layer. Our results show that experimental study of BaFePn2 can test the role of charge and polarization fluctuation, importance of two dimensionality in mechanism of superconductivity.

Screening of magnetic moments in PuAm alloy : LDA+DMFT study

The puzzling absence of Pu magnetic moments in a PuAm environment is explored using the self-consistent Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) calculations in combination with the Local Density Approximation. We argue that delta-Pu -Am alloys provide an ideal test bed for investigating the screening of moments from the single impurity limit to the dense limit. Several important effects can be studied: volume expansion, shift of the bare Pu on-site f energy level, and the reduction of the hybridization cloud resulting from the collective character of the Kondo effect in the Anderson lattice. These effects compensate each other and result in a coherence scale, which is independent of alloy composition, and is around 800K. We emphasize the role of the DMFT self-consistency condition, and multiplet splittings in Pu and Am atoms, in order to capture the correct value of the coherence scale in the alloy.

Correlated electronic structure of LaOFeAs

We compute the electronic structure, momentum resolved spectral function and optical conductivity of the new superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs within the combination of the Density functional theory and the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. We find that the compound in the normal state is a strongly correlated metal and the parent compound is a bad metal at the verge of the metal insulator transition. We argue that the superconductivity is not phonon mediated.

Modelling the Localized to Itinerant Electronic Transition in the Heavy Fermion System CeIrIn5

We address the fundamental question of crossover from localized to itinerant state of a paradigmatic heavy fermionmaterial CeIrIn5. The temperature evolution of the one electron spectra and the optical conductivity is predicted from first principles calculation. The buildup of coherence in the form of a dispersive many body feature is followed in detail and its effects on the conduction electrons and optical conductivity of the material is revealed. We find multiple hybridization gaps and link them to the crystal structure of the material. Our theoretical approach explains the multiple peak structures observed in optical experiments and the sensitivity of CeIrIn5 to substitutions of the transition metal element and may provide a microscopic basis for the more phenomenological descriptions currently used to interpret experiments in heavy fermion systems.

What is the valence of a correlated solid? The double life of delta-plutonium

Plutonium displays phase transitions with enormous volume differences among its phases and both its Pauli like magnetic susceptibility and resistivity are an order of magnitude larger than those of simple metals. Curium is also highly resistive but its susceptibility is Curie-like at high temperatures and orders antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. The anomalous properties of the late actinides stem from the competition between the itinerancy and localization of its f electrons, which makes the late actinides elemental strongly correlated materials. A central problem in this field is to understand the mechanism by which these materials resolve these conflicting tendencies. In this letter we identify the electronic mechanisms responsible for the anomalous behaviour of late actinides. We revisit the concept of valence using theoretical approach that treats magnetism, Kondo screening, atomic multiplet effects, spin orbit coupling and crystal field splitting on the same footing. Plutonium is found to be in a rare mixed valent state, namely its ground state is a superposition of two distinct valencies. Curium settles in a single valence magnetically ordered state at low temperatures. The f7 atomic configuration of Curium is contrasted with the multiple configuration manifolds present in Plutonium ground state which we characterize by a valence histogram. The balance between the Kondo screening and magnetism is determined by the competition between spin orbit coupling and the strength of atomic multiplets which is in turn regulated by the degree of itinerancy. The approach presented here, highlights the electronic origin of the bonding anomalies in plutonium and can be applied to predict generalized valences and the presence or absence of magnetism in other compounds starting from first principles.

The origin of the stabilized simple-cubic structure in Po

The origin of the stabilized simple-cubic (SC) structure in Po is explored by using the first principle band calculations. We have found that the prime origin is the inherent strong spin-orbit (SO) interaction in Po, which suppresses the Peierls-like structural instability as usually occurs in p-bonded systems. Based on the systematic analysis of electronic structures, charge densities, Fermi surfaces, and susceptibilities of Se, Te, and Po, we have proved that the stable crystal structure in VIA elements is determined by the competition between the SO splitting and the crystal field splitting induced by the low-symmetry structural transition. The trigonal structure is stabilized in Se and Te by the larger crystal field splitting than the SO splitting, whereas in Po the SC structure is stabilized by the large SO splitting.

Electronic structures of UTSn (T=Ni, Pd) using photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structures of the localized $5f$ systems UTSn (T=Ni, Pd) have been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The extracted U $5f$ PES spectra of UTSn (T=Ni, Pd) exhibit a broad peak centered at $\sim 0.3$ eV below $\rm E_F$ with rather small spectral weight near $\rm E_F$ (N$_f$($\rm E_F$)). The small N$_f$($\rm E_F$) in UTSn is found to be correlated with the T $d$ PES spectra that have a very low density of states (DOS) near $\rm E_F$. The high-resolution PES spectra for UTSn provide the V-shaped reduced metallic DOS near $\rm E_F$ but do not reveal any appreciable changes in their electronic structures across the magnetic phase transitions. A possible origin for the reduced N$_f$($\rm E_F$) in UTSn is ascribed to the hybridization to the very low T $d$ DOS at $\rm E_F$. Comparison of the measured PES spectra to the LSDA+$U$ band structure calculation reveals a reasonably good agreement for UPdSn, but not so for UNiSn.

Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O using photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O have been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Co 3d states are found to lie near the top of the O $2p$ valence band, with a peak around $\sim 3$ eV binding energy. The Co $2p$ XAS spectrum provides evidence that the Co ions in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O are in the divalent Co$^{2+}$ ($d^7$) states under the tetrahedral symmetry. Our finding indicates that the properly substituted Co ions for Zn sites will not produce the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor property.

Resonant photoemission spectroscopy study of insulator-to-metal transition in Cr- and Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}Mn_{1-y} O_{3} (A=Ca, Sr)

Electronic structures of very dilute Cr- or Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}MnO_{3} (NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using the Mn and Cr 2p -> 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. The Cr 3d states with t^3_{2g} configuration are at ~ 1.3 eV below E_F, and the Cr e_{g} states do not participate in the formation of the band near E_F. Cr- and Ru-induced ferromagnetism and insulator-to-metal transitions can be understood with their measured electronic structures.

Electronic structures of La$_3$S$_4$ and Ce$_3$S$_4$

We have investigated electronic structures of La$_3$S$_4$ and Ce$_3$S$_4$ using the LSDA and LSDA+$U$ methods. Calculated density of states (DOS) are compared with the experimental DOS obtained by the valence band photoemission spectroscopy. The DOS at $E_{\rm{F}}$ indicates the 5$d$ character in La$_3$S$_4$ and 4$f$ character in Ce$_3$S$_4$. It is found to be nearly half metallic in the ferromagnetic ground state of Ce$_3$S$_4$. %Ce$_3$S$_4$ has ferromagnetic ground states with spin and orbital magnetic %moments of 1.27 $μ_{\rm{B}}$ and $-$2.81 $μ_{\rm{B}}$ per Ce, respectively, %and shows nearly half metallic ground state. We discuss the superconductivity and structural transition in La$_3$S$_4$, and the absence of structural transition in Ce$_3$S$_4$.

Bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy of A_2FeMoO_6 double perovskites (A=Sr, Ba)

Electronic structures of Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) and Ba_2FeMoO_6 (BFMO) double perovskites have been investigated using the Fe 2p->3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and the Cooper minimum in the Mo 4d photoionization cross section. The states close to the Fermi level are found to have strongly mixed Mo-Fe t_{2g} character, suggesting that the Fe valence is far from pure 3+. The Fe 2p_{3/2} XAS spectra indicate the mixed-valent Fe^{3+}-Fe^{2+} configurations, and the larger Fe^{2+} component for BFMO than for SFMO, suggesting a kind of double exchange interaction. The valence-band PES spectra reveal good agreement with the LSDA+U calculation.

Electronic structure of metallic antiperovskite compound GaCMn$_3$

We have investigated electronic structures of antiperovskite GaCMn$_3$ and related Mn compounds SnCMn$_3$, ZnCMn$_3$, and ZnNMn$_3$. In the paramagnetic state of GaCMn$_3$, the Fermi surface nesting feature along the $Γ{\rm R}$ direction is observed, which induces the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin ordering with the nesting vector {\bf Q} $\sim Γ{\rm R}$. Calculated susceptibilities confirm the nesting scenario for GaCMn$_3$ and also explain various magnetic structures of other antiperovskite compounds. Through the band folding effect, the AFM phase of GaCMn$_3$ is stabilized. Nearly equal densities of states at the Fermi level in the ferromagnetic and AFM phases of GaCMn$_3$ indicate that two phases are competing in the ground state.

Electronic Structures of Antiperovskite Superconductor MgCNi$_3$ and Related Compounds

Electronic structure of a newly discovered antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi$_3$ is investigated by using the LMTO band method. The main contribution to the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}$ comes from Ni 3$d$ states which are hybridized with C 2$p$ states. The DOS at $E_{\rm F}$ is varied substantially by the hole or electron doping due to the very high and narrow DOS peak located just below $E_{\rm F}$. We have also explored electronic structures of C-site and Mg-site doped MgCNi$_3$ systems, and described the superconductivity in terms of the conventional phonon mechanism.

Electronic structures of antiperovskite superconductors: MgXNi$_3$ (X=B,C,N)

We have investigated electronic structures of a newly discovered antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi$_3$ and related compounds MgBNi$_3$ and MgNNi$_3$. In MgCNi$_3$, a peak of very narrow and high density of states is located just below $\rm E_F$, which corresponds to the $π^*$ antibonding state of Ni-3d and C-$2p$ but with the predominant Ni-3d character. The prominent nesting feature is observed in the $Γ$-centered electron Fermi surface of an octahedron-cage-like shape that originates from the 19th band. The estimated superconducting parameters based on the simple rigid-ion approximation are in reasonable agreement with experiment, suggesting that the superconductivity in MgCNi$_3$ is described well by the conventional phonon mechanism.
